I actually enjoy this design and I appreciate Justin's ability to communicate his reasoning behind his deign choices. Honestly, I'm curious as to how the Sonics will look and feel like when they return to Seattle.
I don't think I've ever thought about the Clippers for 3 minutes, let alone 18. But what GQ Sports did here with Justin was so enjoyable. Very cool way of capturing a little of the design process in general. Hope they'll do more of these!
While i dont mind the logo you made (the wordmark is fantastic) i think i would have changed the sails color to white, as i dont totally get the correlation to a sail when its in that navy blue state.
With Seattle potentially getting the SuperSonics back around 2027-28 when the league expands, I’d love to see a video where he modernizes the already existing logo and also makes a completely new one. 🙏🏽
@@dmillsjr1 it's not better. Basketball lines are so random and doesn't make any corelation with the sails which in that colors doesn't even reminds of sails. And what about thoes diamonds? so much dead space below them. Such a lack of balance on the outer circle.
they literally could have just gone retro and people would have loved it lol. nuggets should do similar thing w rainbow, Celtics with 3 tone logo etc. graphic design is one of the biggest rip offs in history. here's a squiggle that took me a week that'll be 100,000 dollars please
Proportionately the new triangle grouping doesn't look like clipper ship sails anymore, just an odd geometric pattern shoehorned into a basketball. This is compounded by them no longer being white (sails) on a blue (sea) background (and without a sun) - now they're just odd navy triangles + a basketball ... not a great concept and doesn't have any of the nostalgia equity of the '78 design. The lack of contrast between the new red and navy also causes legibility issues with the forms themselves which would be worse on moving fabric. Nitpicking but the placement of the 'Los Angeles' is not centered in the housing circle and leaves a lot of negative space. I do like the new script though and could see its angles possibly incorporated better into the logo. Overall this seems like a strange side step at best, rather than an improvement: C-
What's a little more interesting is that recently the Clippers' G-League Team moved to Oceanside (in San Diego County), and rebranded as the San Diego Clippers.
Kind of a mix between the Nets and Raptors logo. Thank you for sharing. BTW, "Lakers" are also ships, the freighters that brought cargo thru the Great Lakes region of the United States.
Thank you Justin for making an awesome attempt in rebranding the Clippers logo! I see why some people in the comments compare the logo he did to the FC Bayern Munich logo and I can't unsee it. However, it still looks cool yet retro at the same time.
Absolutely love this re-design, so much soul and analog feel calling back to the original Clippers logo. The wordmark is great also! Gives me big Cleveland Guardians vibes, which is another rebrand that I think was really well done (wordmark-wise, at least). Think I might mock this up on a jersey to really see how it hits.
I throughly enjoyed your process for re-creating their logo. I love everything that you created except for the triangle sails. Unfortunately when I see the triangles I do not think of boat sails. I think…Triangles. And then link them to sails. If you changed that look in your design to mimic real boat sails…then I think you would have a perfect logo. Why hide the sails…be proud of them. Just my thoughts.
Maybe it's me being a kid of the 90s, but I think most teams had their best logos during that period, and the 00s redesigns were massive steps back. I think most changes are nostalgic in a very flat way, without creating something of quality that will last long enough for people to grow nostalgic about it.
Don't typically say this about team rebrand attempts, but this is a definite upgrade. It's much better than what they have now and makes great use of some of the existing brand collateral, which I'm surprised the Clippers passed up on.
Fun video. The new official logo looks bad. I thought it was a cruise ship. I like the sails with ball in your logo, but it has a weird 2D to 3D transition that’s off putting. Maybe a curve to the sails would make it feel a little more 3D. The sails are also so abstract it’s hard to see the connection to a clipper ship. Would like to see a second design that tries to incorporate a clipper ship but doesn’t look cartoony. But this was a fun video and I enjoyed watching your process.
I’d honestly flip the colors on the logo. Have the border as red, the outer circle as navy blue, the diamonds as red, and the inside lines as red, keep the text as white.
The Toronto Raptors would be an interesting one to do since the 90s dino logo is so iconic but the organization have re branded to where the dino is used in special occasion jerseys .. would be cool to see his insight on it
I probably would’ve tried to put the sails in white and the background in blue and also put the diamonds in white with a light blue border. but the concept in itself ia great. Would be by far the best logo in Clippers history
@ Orange looks fine IMO. Almost all teams has red and blue. Around 7 teams has both red and blue. 1. Wizards (navy blue/red) 2. Sixers (blue/red) 3. Pelicans (navy/red/gold) 4. Cavs (navy/gold/wine) 5. Nuggets (blue/yellow/red) 6. Thunder (blue/sunset) 7. Pistons (royal/red)
I like it! What if the diamonds are angled down a little, as opposed to being perfectly horizontal, then moved down the circle a little, so that the space between 'Los Angeles' and the diamond is the same as the space between the diamond and 'Clippers'?
My hometown Toronto Raptors could use a rebrand and it should entirely be based off the original logo and colors. We need to bring the purple and red back into the fold. I hope it happens!
how about redesigning the lakers logo? give it a totally different look. i feel only subtle changes has been made over the years. think that would be i interesting to give it a whole new look
Wild rebrand. The actual logo wants to bring some identy but loses too much in the essential point: be a basketball team, looks more like a navy agency LOL
The Timberwolves are likely rebranding next season. Do them! The original "Shep" logo and jerseys + the "Trees" era of the late '90s through mid '00s are most beloved in Minnesota.
As a design student, i need more of these videos 👌👌
as a regular stoner . me 2

Yes Seattle
Sonics is what came to my mind while watching. There is a lot to play with
no those diamonds look terrible
Bring this guy back. Different teams, different sports, different sports icon logos.
FACTS!
the jazz's rebrand (and then rebrand again) in the last couple years is super interesting i'd love to hear what justin thinks of itttttt

Yes Seattle @gqsports
The mid late 90’s SuperSonics logo/uniforms 🔥🔥🔥🔥
most nba logos in general are uninspiring and the circular/basketball element is the biggest reason why
I think the Wizards incorporated it into their logo pretty well.
@ respectfully, the wizards logo is horrendous. One of the 3 worst brands in the NBA
@@skipbayless4375name the other 2?
@ pelicans and grizzlies/nets
Exactly, they are too heavily reliant on a basketball shape being the foundation of the logo which limits alot of the creativity
Bayern Munich: hmm… looks familiar 🤨🧐
Haha, I had the same thought!
Those Sales are a bit too abstract and the composition looks a bit like Bayern Munich. I would make the type larger. The Jersey type is 🔥
The real new Logo looks awful. It looks like a Cruise Ship, not a Clipper. They should've hired this Guy.
Still, the other clipper logos don't even have a ship and were worse than this.
You wanna tell me what he did is better? C'mon.

PLEASE DO THE COMMANDERS! Such a controversial rebrand I’d be interested in seeing what GQ comes up with.
Bro just made the clippers logo into FC Bayern Munichs logo lmaooooo
Do this with football clubs too
more of these needed
What's a little more interesting is that recently the Clippers' G-League Team moved to Oceanside (in San Diego County), and rebranded as the San Diego Clippers.
I need more of these type of videos!! Hb break down each team! 1 Video at a time?
Looks alot like the Cleveland Guardians typeface
I thought the same thing. Especially the navy on red. Works better for basketball than baseball imo.
It absolutely does but it all made sense once he mentioned working with Kimou Meyer at Doubleday - they did the Guardians branding!
At first I got a little bit hesitation whether liking it or not but once it's on the court floor (17:14) yea bro you got it, that's so powerful. 👏👏
Kind of a mix between the Nets and Raptors logo. Thank you for sharing.

This reminds me of the FC Bayern logo a little too much. Maybe put the jersey font on the bottom of the logo to set itself apart?

I think the triangles would be more apparent as sails if they were white on blue. Maybe white on the light blue
Clippers fan here, I wish you designed our new logo tbh. I love our new jerseys but the logo doesn't do much for me. I like yours better. Great video!
Such a well put together video and I really enjoyed Justin!
that script font is so fire!

graphic designers here, yes yes more more of these plz plz
As a clipper fan your logo is SO much better than the new one
nah dont lie. It's meh
I know the Bulls logo is so iconic but i would love to see how you would rebrand the Bulls logo.
Upside down it’s a robot spreading cheeks
yeaahh...lesgo ahead and make this a mainstay series on the channel

I think the centre basketball line clashes a bit too much with the angle of the 3 triangles. Cool video!

This actually lands really close to what their G league logo looks like but I do like where you landed with your version.

this was cool. they should do the Rockets next. Also a San Diego team once upon a time, and they are in need of a rebrand
I prefer this version! I'm not even a Clippers fan and would have bought merch for this logo...especially the jersey
Should have mentioned that the first LA Clipper design was meant to tie into LA Dodgers logo.
