Good video, my brother. I don't know that I've ever asked permission, but I don't pass until it is safe. As I pass I always give a short wave. I think all riders are my brothers, regardless of race, creed, or bike. Thisis the creedo I follow on every ride, for over 325K miles...Ride on.
I ride without regard to asking for permission. However, there is always an exception, like riding up to a large group and the Sargeant at ARms has got dangling 3 or 4' weighted balls hanging off his bike, I back the F*** off cause there are some real crazy groups ouot there that think THEY DO Own the Road and also they are tryna protect the groups riders from rival gangs running up on em. I'm a lone ranger mostly and ride a damn fast sport bike but common sense is uncommon these days and having a oz of it will save your bacon. Besides most Harley rider ignore any other bike out there that AINT a Harley. Well OK but that's FUUUUUKKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEDDDDDD UP.
@ous2451 I respect all, feel that we are all out there to have a good time, but I carry for that reason alone. Some people will submit to others, I don't. Also respect always goes a long ways, usually people have no issues with anyone if they are respectful.

Lifetime rider here. Find this ridiculous. The issue is that groups of riders (usually on cruisers) act as rolling roadblocks (and they don't care). That's what's discourteous. The idea that I should have to get permission to pass someone that is already acting in a discourteous manner just isn't right. These groups feel they can impose their riding style on others - that's not OK.
I pass and waive hello and never had a problem. It seems to me that asking another man for permission to do something, anything, is antithetical to the spirit or motorcycle life. Never have never will and bite my tongue for noone
I personally take the "higher road" and still am courteous to even the slow groups. Have you considered that they may be inexperienced and not realize what they are doing? I'm of the opinion to be polite and courteous to all riders on the road. Regardless of their actions, I'm responsible to only my own.
It's a matter of Respect, and that's huge with 1% mcs. Go on with your bad selves, don't come around the SF Bay area with that bs, you think your all that, can disrespect others, stupid people win stupid prizes
I just happened upon your channel. I am an old 1%er biker from the East Coast. What 99%er MC’s do not realize is that as a 1%er club we are constantly scanning our backs, sides, and front. Not only do we scan for motorcycles but cages (cars). The 1 %er lifestyle is full of other rivals that can pull up on us and cause problems. We are always weary of fast approaching motorcycles (esp since we cruise at 80-85(open highway). We scan for vans, trucks, etc. we scan for cages with multiple guys inside. Even scan the colors of the cages and bumper stickers etc. it could cost us our life. Secondly, when approaching a 1%er pack it is HUGE respect to know the road protocol as this video teaches. There are Saftey issues as mentioned but a the biggest is RESPECT. I have never, in 40+ yrs of MC seen anyone denied permission to pass when offering this respect. This is good educational stuff right here! Thanks
Only ever been denied to pass a group once in my entire life been riding for about 20 years now and it was a memorial run (aprox 100+ bikes) here on the West Coast and I showed my respect and backed off about a hundred yards behind the pack and just kept cruising Btw dig the name
@@sedrickmcmiller9367 1%er is a term for "outlaw motorcycle clubs" or MCs.. some president said ""99% of motorcyclist are law abiding citizens" so they took it and ran with it and made it a part of their everyday life... I've been riding for 25 years and I have never come across this or a big group of motorcyclist where I had to be concerned about this. Very Interesting and good to know.
When you are on the Faster Lane and are indeed Faster is the only respect anyone need to pass anybody on the road, the roads are solely owned by the Tax payer s
I'm one of those people that think there shouldn't even be a turn signal law because that should just be a common courtesy thing. I use mine all the time not because of the law but, because I want others to know my intentions so they don't have to guess.
Courtesy and respect don't seem to come from these MCs towards other drivers. They show zero regard for laws and safety when they're taking over multiple lanes on the highway. I used to think riders were cool, now I find them obnoxious.
This is true with any minority road user. Truckers show respect to one another. The same is true for bus drivers and farmers on tractors. It's an acknowledgement that you're not a standard cager, and have acquired additional skills on the road.
Hell no, no one owns the road and we all pay taxes. If they don't like it they can try and catch me. Im riding doing my own thing and have no idea who they are. just like a car I signal and stay straight in my lane I wave or nod at bikers but that is as far as it goes. I don't drive places to meet people and play stupid games. Respect is for people I care about not random strangers. They get what I expect, what drivers sharing the road deserve and not more
Having respect and showing videos like this is really helpful for me as a new rider, most of these bikers are experienced and this video educated newbies like myself about looking out for these moments. I love the riding community and appreciate this video. Love from Brooklyn NY
I sold mine along time ago but there is no road curatasy anymore in az I think everyone thinks it's their own personal drag strip. It's nots on the road Evan in cars its crazy I was never in a club or group for persanly reasons but Evan 4 ways stop.s noones know how to preced I think the younger sorry need to go to a good driving school lol
I think it's more about the respect and safety rather than a permission to pass. Because at the end of the day getting home safe is rule number one. Stay safe...
Brother, have never experienced that before out on the trail, but that was a great gesture by them, and equally as cool to respectfully acknowledge them back. That’s what our community should always look like. We all love riding, let’s enjoy it and each other.
I never really understood this as a new rider, but after some close calls, it makes sense. The point about safety is very true at the 2:18 mark on your video. There was some debris that a biker in your group had to quickly maneuver around. If he/she was aware of other faster riders passing by, the swerve could have caused a bigger issue.
Now if your group is on the left lane and I’m alone on the right lane and someone from that group wants to hop in my lane to stop me from passing them. Thats just foolery. I’m passing you no matter what, the right lane is already open, I don’t need your permission to continue on that lane I was riding on.
I started riding in 1981 and I've NEVER heard of asking another rider for "permission" to pass. I just ride my ride. That's my business. I'll acknowledge other riders always with a nod or a hand salute depending upon the posture of my motorcycle (am I in a sharp turn or straight and level), but I won't ask permission to pass. That's what slow lanes are for. I do ride the speed limit, so 99% of the time, others are passing me, but I've never encountered anyone asking my permission. I just that it's ridiculous. They don't need my permission, and I don't need theirs.
Most Definitely! It’s all about respect & most importantly, safety. I was always taught that the “permission” procedure was reserved for passing OMCs.. but since becoming the Road Captain of my chapter, I get the yes or no from all MCs. You never know what moves they need to make soon or what the conditions are up ahead! Stay Safe.. Stay Dangerous!! - Trouble2Times✌🏽
This is a great video! This addresses some stigmas between bikers on the road (especially new riders). Just about everything revolves around safety and respect. Ride safe!!!
We all wana make it back home...we have limited protection on 2 wheels so safety is 🔑. Be respectful and give courtesy to your fellow riders. Thx for stopping by!
Appreciate you teaching us new riders the proper protocols for this new endeavor. The way most of the MC fellas roll, I am the one being passed, never passing. Thanks my bruh, another great video Mane.
I should clarify this, respect is earned not given out freely to anyone. If this was a military funeral I would NOT pass it…. But a bunch of guys on bikes ? Meh
Protocol? there is a new protocol on the road ? :D what's next ? When you are on the Faster Lane and are indeed Faster, that is the only protocol to pass, that is there since the horse and buggy
I've been riding for almost 25 years and I'm just now hearing more and more people in the community bring up this question. I've always acknowledged every brother and sister on two wheels that I encounter and the only time I wait to pass is if we are running the corners in the mountains and they're slower than me. I feel like if you're coming up on a large group ride that obvious, of course give way. Over all as long as we respect each other the community will continue to be a place of a passion for riding.
He shouldn't be riding so close to someone he can't see the debris in front of them. This is one of the fundamental problems of riding in large groups. Also, the first person in the group, the ride captain, should have pointed that out, and it should be pointed out all the way to the back so that no one has to swerve.
I was taught by my biker dad and his club you always show respect and curtsy to the other bikers on the road. You never know when a bad turn could happen. Stay safe.
Thanks G I have heard that riding through a group of MC'S is disrespectful and could cause some problems. I always want to be respectful at all times✌🏽✌🏽
I see you’re taking full advantage of your educational skills. Thanks so much for putting your own special spin on How and Why. Of course you started today’s lesson with a historical Lesson, that made me want to keep watching until the end.
I ride with a club so we ask for the pass. At a minimum we will acknowledge the group with a hand waive. When I ride alone, I acknowledge the fellow rider, whether he is wearing a vest or not. There is nothing wrong with being nice and respectful of other riders.
If it's a big group, we hang back if they are in the fast lane. If it's just Kake and me... and the group is in the number two lane, we have never asked for permission to pass because maybe they are riding at a slower pace for a reason. However, we still acknowledge them. If we are riding with a group, and we approach another group, (on their right) then we ask for permission to pass. As you said, it's common courtesy and we thank them.
@@lisazinn866 If they were hanging with him while he was on a busa, it was because he allowed them to hang behind him. I ride a C14, a Kawasaki sport touring bike similar to the busa, no Harley can hang on my rear unless I allow it. A busa is a bit faster than my C14.
I ride a Hog. I’m not a 1%er. I get passed without permission and I’ve passed without permission. I always give respect by nods and gestures, many times not getting it in return. No, I won’t ask for permission. I give respect while doing my thing. “‘Murica” !
@PileofBrass that is how it is sup to be man, always! You do not need to overdo it, just mutual respect, a nod or wave here and there. People that do not wave just because you do not ride a Harley Davidson however, those morons I could do without :P
Interesting video. In my 32 years of riding, I have never asked permission to pass another group of riders. Nor have I ever had another group of riders ask for my permission. One time I was on the interstate passing a group and some of them came up onto a car and I got over into the far-left track and pointed for them to come over onto the right track, so they didn't have to slow down for the car as I was passing them and then the car. But that's it. Some of the handlebars on the bikes in the video are pretty awesome. 👍
Thank you for making this video. A lot of riders now days don't acknowledge fellow riders these days. Hopefully they will see this and show more love and respect for other "Brother's and Sister's in the Wind"
Im a free American, I own me and my bike, I am not in a gang, I do not play by your games! Just because you want to be a bully means nothing, I hate bullies! I ride where and how I want! But.... I do highly believe in respect and love for my Fam on 2!!!
You have no idea what you're talking about. It's not "bullies" it's safety when you're riding around a large pack. A really big pack takes a lot of organizing. Outriders to block traffic at intersections to ensure the entire pack makes it through. A guy riding drag who will help anyone who falls behind. The lead at front left who makes decisions and a road captain. You're doing the right thing by contacting by a wave the guy riding drag. He knows if there's a turn coming up and you don't want to be in the middle of the pack when it lane changes for a turn. You get in a close call, or make physical contact with a bike in the pack or god forbid cause an accident because you got pissy about them riding in a pack and decided to do whatever you felt like because "I'll show them." Well, you'll get what you have coming then for showing no respect and causing an accident. It's up to you to know these things if you ride in areas where there's lots of MCs and a large biking community. You give respect and they'll give it back. It's easy as that.

I’m curious. This is an honest question. No pun intended. Do Highway Patrol motorcyclist have to ask for permission to pass motorcycle groups by? If not, why should others have to? Have anyone “seriously” told the highway patrol “no?” If so, what was the outcome, if any?
I'll throw in my 2 cents on this one. HP know enough about riding that they don't rush up on a group of riders aggressively. They know that that they are going to pass and they approach respectfully, I mean unless they're looking for you specifically.
Who mentioned aggressively? All I was asking is who is to say that we can’t pass the MC on the fwy. I’m a tax payer who’s been authorize by the DMV (to ride) my motorcycle in accordance with the laws that have been established. Personally, I will pass anybody as long as I’m being respectful and not in an aggressive manner as you’ve mentioned. MC don’t make the laws for the roads, lawmakers do..
I will acknowledge other bikers on the road ,no matter if they are riding in the same or opposite direction . If i see a group of bikes on an obvious funeral or memorial run , I wouldn’t overtake them anyway . If they are just a group out for a ride ,there is no way I would ask any permission to overtake them. I am not in their club ,nor have any intentions of joining any, they are welcome to their rules , as a non member they don’t apply to me . I have no intention of asking a bunch of hog jockeys or anyone for permission to overtake .
Man. I'm not asking to pass shit. Me and the boys won't mess with your crew and won't mix between another group. But other then a head nod or a quick wave. That's it while I'm going by.
Straight facts brother. Always be respectful and you’re good. Everyone’s been there when someone, bike or car, blows by you on the freeway. That shit is not cool.
While doing the poker run in the Florida keys I had mixed experiences. Some groups would show etiquette while others just zoomed by recklessly. I guess it depends on your character.

@@Fredscat Think I'm qualified to speak out...I'm related to the Davidsons...severe attitude problem with their customers, that doesn't exist with riders of other brands!
When I started riding, I had a good friend who was part of an MC give me the proper protocol just for this. I'm grateful that he took the time to educate me on the things of this nature.
I belong to the most exclusive MC in existence. I am the only member, and there are no schoolyard rules telling me how to sit, how to stand in line, how to speak. The charter of my MC is to expand the boundaries of a free life. I regard every rider as a brother, until he proves unworthy of that regard. I treat all riders with reasonable respect and courtesy. That includes getting the attention of a fellow rider before passing. But getting "permission"? Get permission, or what? An implied threat? Stacking up twenty bikes so nobody can pass is the discourteous behavior. When someone rides up behind me, I move over and wave them on, and wish them godspeed.
This video was random as hell but even more informative then I could have imagined. I'm a Ryker rider and never considered this but now I know about this unwritten courtesy. I always do two or three wheels down salute when I see fellow riders but this is nice to know. Thanks for posting
I usually hang back if they moving good down the road. I seldom pass cause i'm seldom in any kind of a hurry. I'll pull in at the next fuel stop and introduce myself. Most of the time i'll get invited to ride with them. We have a lot of HOG chapters around here. There's 9 HD dealerships in a 110 miles radius. I'm 55 and I feel like a pup compared to most of those guy's. I definitely show respect where it's due. They do tend to be a little on the slower side and have a lot of rules, but I can dig that because they been out there doing their thing for a long time.
You said it best. When I'm on 2's, if I'm coming pass a group I will normally ask. Safety is the key & the main thing I have see is that group making an exit nearby. Now funeral runs or big long groups I never pass...just the Respect for me. Now, the OMC's you know how I will roll if I'm doing this for 99's...but heck, it's all RESPECT - YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE!
This education needs to get passed on to everyone. Now some times, you might run into a crew that don’t want you to pass them. Now for any reason you feel you need to pass them and it’s safe…what do you do? This is why I will always keep a fast bike cause you might have to scoot on pass them. I’ve heard of situations but never experienced them.
Unless you are flipping them off or something how do you pass unrespectfully? Passing someone should be just that, passing someone. Nothing more nothing less.
I bought my first bike in 1973, a wave, a nod and a hand shake goes a long way in showing respect to other riders. I never had any issues from any other riders.
While you laugh and think it's funny...blowing past any fellow biker is dangerous and just rude. But I'll give you a nugget. Not all members are on bikes... Be safe man..
Thanks for sharing this. I've been riding for approximately 60 years and was never aware of this etiquette. I have heard tales of certain biker groups being angered that another bike passed their group, but I didn't understand the reasons for this.
One TH-camr who didn't know about protocols almost got kicked off his bike. Black Dragon spoken on that incident especially coming up on a 1%er club. He said hang back and the tail gunner will ask what your intentions are ? And you ask if you can pass, he will tell you hold and ride up front and then drop back to you and he will either give you the ok or no. If it is ok then you proceed and roll by and give them a nod and go on about your business.

The more I learned about 1%ers, the less I wanted anything to do with that. The whole point is supposed to be freedom. You take on a whole extra set of rules and restrictions. It's smart to do , the group might be about to change lanes into the lane that you're in. The guy in the back could let the others know to wait , or let me know to wait. It's common sense.
@@rottweilerfun9520 Or maybe, like normal drivers and everyone else on the road, you look before trying to change lanes and if someone is in the way you just wait? Asking to pass someone on the hwy is the dumbest sh*t I've heard of, and is actually dangerous since most people won't know what the hell you're doing and will be distracting trying to figure out what you're on about.
It takes no effort to be courteous and respectful. It's a community, a tribe, a family is a family, and there's good and bad. Always be gracious and have an open invitation mindset, but remember the golden rule... two eyes, two ears, one mouth.❤
Cool, learned something new today. Not that I have come upon too many large groups of bikes, and I'm usually solo. But some additional dynamics to be aware of out on the road.
I understand showing courtesy and respect. However, as a grown ass man, i'll never ask another man for permission to pass. I live by that now as well as when I was a vested rider.
Over here in England, we acknowledge one another with a wave as we pass. That’s the courteous thing to do and I’ve never had an issue but we don’t ask for permission to make the move. If you come up against slower riders, you make sure they can see you before you make the move then a wave or a thumbs up. Nice video by the way.
I ride a 110cc bike and was surprised at how bikers nod and wave. I thought I’d be shunned and they’d laugh at my ”scooter”, but actually it’s the opposite. It’s my first time on 2 wheels and I’m still very new. I am really liking the bike community much more than the car community.
I ride by myself but sometimes I see a group of bikers I usually stay away. But now that I know rule. I thank you 🙏. Safety is important to me so we may all enjoy 😊 our ride ❤
Never been part of an MC but I grew up around it and it's just straight up all about respect. MC life is not an easy life and packs a lot of uncertainty so safety and caution is a big factor. Mostly though it's all about respect ✌️🤘😎🤘🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Hell yeah. Out of respect, and love for my fellow humans that love being on twos, I would definitely do this. If I get the no go, I’m pretty sure at the speed the pack is riding at, it wouldn’t hurt one bit to hang back. Lol! Point being is we all arrive ALIVE. Awesome video sir.
Never been in a position, where I need to pass a group. But when I see a group approaching from behind, I pull to the right side of my lane, so they can pass, regardless if there is oncoming traffic or not.
I ride solo now, when I come up behind more riders I always make sure they know I'm there, for my safety and theirs, If I want to pass I wave and go and get out of their way
The main reason for “acknowledging” people is safety?? Not ego!! Is safety!!! Safety is individual and according to the law when you get your license. If that were the case, then I have to roll down the window and ask other drivers if I can pass them?? ng please
Several years ago, I was on the road in Arizona riding solo, number 1 lane when a biker rolled up on the #2 lane and pointed forward. I looked over, nodded my head and off he went. That was the first time anyone had ever done that to me and I was taken aback. I didn't notice what colors he had on and I'm sure he couldn't see all of my Firefighter colors, but it felt nice. A few years later I was riding back home, in the carpool lane when I came up to a 1%, 2 lanes away from me. I slowed down, he looked at me and I pointed forward and he nodded for me to go. So, as you stated, respect goes a long way. By the way, a couple of rice rockets had passed me before I came up to the 1% and they didn't look over or slow down. Ride safe and long.
You said it, period. It’s the right thing to acknowledge one another. But that’s it. It’s not permission. If you told me not to pass for no particular reason? Well that’s just not respect. That’s why we acknowledge one another, respect. Peace out.
As much as I've ridden these highways I've never been denied for no particular reason...and I personally would never do that... that is indeed not respect
Awesome question. 99% of of us single and group riders, going down highways and freeways, always give a wave or low hand in passing. Whether it's heading toward or coming up on, we do it both directions. Like driving cars, we like to say hi but most importantly, to be as safe as possible. We also never try to push. 🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍

Same here about that rule. If you want to show the courtesy, that's cool. If you don't, that's cool too. MCs don't own the road or the open lanes.

Good video, my brother. I don't know that I've ever asked permission, but I don't pass until it is safe. As I pass I always give a short wave. I think all riders are my brothers, regardless of race, creed, or bike. Thisis the creedo I follow on every ride, for over 325K miles...Ride on.
Much respect to you!
This, plus a quick flash of the headlight to let them know I'm coming.

Agreed
@@Fredscatrespect is earned, boy!
Thanks
Agreed.
thank you! im just trying to help out!
Only ever been denied to pass a group once in my entire life been riding for about 20 years now and it was a memorial run (aprox 100+ bikes) here on the West Coast and I showed my respect and backed off about a hundred yards behind the pack and just kept cruising
Btw dig the name
What's a 1%er ?
@@sedrickmcmiller9367 1%er is a term for "outlaw motorcycle clubs" or MCs.. some president said ""99% of motorcyclist are law abiding citizens" so they took it and ran with it and made it a part of their everyday life...
That's the short version of someone who has never been a part of any kind of club and just enjoys being on the open road.. but if you're serious about knowing what the 1% patch is all about it's easy to Google, but you're not going to get a biased media version..
I've been riding for 25 years and I have never come across this or a big group of motorcyclist where I had to be concerned about this. Very Interesting and good to know.

Nope it’s a cool story
It’s courteous😂
As a solo rider, I can see asking permission if we are on a one lane road. But if there are multiple lanes, I'll gladly wave at you as I pass by.
No matter how crazy the world gets, courtesy and respect never really go out of style. Consider it a bonus that this is for both party's safety.
Totally agree!
BS
Hell no I'm not asking. This is a free country. I do not need to ask for permission to pass.
I’m just getting into riding and I just absolutely love the respect and the care that bikers have over car drivers.

This is true with any minority road user. Truckers show respect to one another. The same is true for bus drivers and farmers on tractors.

Absolutely! Mutual Respect, for them to ask and you to not hold them up.
Yep agree!
I think it's more about the respect and safety rather than a permission to pass. Because at the end of the day getting home safe is rule number one. Stay safe...
100% agree
Brother, have never experienced that before out on the trail, but that was a great gesture by them, and equally as cool to respectfully acknowledge them back. That’s what our community should always look like. We all love riding, let’s enjoy it and each other.
Indeed
It’s about asking permission and allowing other to exert dominance aver you? That doesn’t sound like a community to me.
Dominance? Lol
Exactly

Protocol? there is a new protocol on the road ? :D what's next ? When you are on the Faster Lane and are indeed Faster, that is the only protocol to pass, that is there since the horse and buggy
I've been riding for almost 25 years and I'm just now hearing more and more people in the community bring up this question. I've always acknowledged every brother and sister on two wheels that I encounter and the only time I wait to pass is if we are running the corners in the mountains and they're slower than me. I feel like if you're coming up on a large group ride that obvious, of course give way. Over all as long as we respect each other the community will continue to be a place of a passion for riding.
Well said!
Stay safe.

If they were hanging with him while he was on a busa, it was because he allowed them to hang behind him.
“‘Murica” !

Thank you!
Thank you for making this video. A lot of riders now days don't acknowledge fellow riders these days. Hopefully they will see this and show more love and respect for other "Brother's and Sister's in the Wind"

Hwy patrol does what they wish...Can't really say anything about them
I'll throw in my 2 cents on this one.
You raise some wonderful points that I hadn't even considered like a huge group and maybe they will be exiting soon. Thanks for that!
No problem! Ride safe
But if they "maybe will be exiting soon" shouldn't they NOT be in the hammer lane?
If they didn’t ride in the left lane/passing lane this wouldn’t really be a problem

Never been in a position, where I need to pass a group. But when I see a group approaching from behind, I pull to the right side of my lane, so they can pass, regardless if there is oncoming traffic or not.
Great reply!
I ride solo now, when I come up behind more riders I always make sure they know I'm there, for my safety and theirs, If I want to pass I wave and go and get out of their way
Yep
What a crock, on a highway like this where there are passing lanes you do NOT need to ask permission to pass another club.
The main reason for “acknowledging” people is safety?? Not ego!! Is safety!!! Safety is individual and according to the law when you get your license. If that were the case, then I have to roll down the window and ask other drivers if I can pass them?? ng please
🤷🏾♂️
Absolutely! I always do it’s a sign of mutual respect between riders 🤙🏼✌🏼
Thank you for sharing your experience! Respect is key
