I decided to go into this game blind, managed to avoid all teasers and trailers etc etc. I was slightly suspicious of how he seemed just... too perfect with very few flaws. I remember speaking to Felix, who called him a wild boar and thinking 'yeah something seems sketchy' and then this scene... oof, it was perfect. The animation, the build up, the reveal, the music, the voice acting. It was perfect.
@@ironbee75 I absolutely agree. Golden Deer is the funnest, nicest group of people and a sweet place to start things off (though IMO the least interesting and complex story wise). It's also the only route where the Flame Emperor reveal is a genuine surprise. Blue Lions route makes it obvious and in Black Eagles she straight up tells you.

in my humble opinion. The Blue Lions route also makes it obvious that Edelgard is the Flame Emperor. Especially the scene when the Agarthans and Flame Emperor are talking. near the end of that, the Flame Emperor drops a dagger, Dimitri gave Edelgard a dagger. so i feel it's easy for the player to piece it all together. although maybe this is just my opinion because i already knew. i played Golden deer first

However, I think the dramatic irony and foreshadowing building up until the reveal, and then being able to see the reaction from Dimitri (who has had a complicated, distant step-sibling relationship with Edelgard), far outweighs the surprise by being given the satisfaction of not only knowing you were correct in your prediction, but also seeing the perfect prince break down in front of everyone without remorse. But I may be biased since I played Blue Lions first 🤷♀️

And Hubert... well he's just really weird, and the voice actor does a great job being creepy. But yeah, both Azure Moon and Verdant Wind were absolutely amazing in their own ways (Yet to play the church route).

This scene, in its entirety, is probably one of my favorite cutscenes in video game history. It perfectly shows a normal civil man turning into a twisted and insane killer. My favorite part is how as Dimitri is killing the soldiers, it seems as he’s enjoying it. His smile throughout the scene and his creepy laugh at the end just tops it off. They really nailed it here
I just realized--his crest of Blaiddyd grants him amazing strength, and he crushed a dude's skull with a bare hand and crushed Edelgard's mask with only his foot. While Byleth grasped Dimitri's shoulder, Dimitri still cared deeply for Byleth. For all I know she could've been knocked out dead from being pushed by Dimitri.
Maybe. Though my Byleth was level 35 at this point and Dimitri was only 28. I feel like that gap and the swordsmaster vs lord class might have complicated things on Dimitri's side

What we see isn't sudden... the game is almost yelling the answer at us with the symbolism. Just as the Flame Emperor's mask falls... so does the mask of the prince hiding the boar.
The coolest part is you can see subtle hints of this as the story progresses. It’s initially scene when stopping the mad villagers from killing each other, as Dimitri uncharacteristically threatens them with a gruesome demise before regaining his composure. Initially we think he’s just affected by the miasma, which is why this still comes as such a shock.
When Sothis says “so we’re sending kids into battle eh?” I didn’t really understand it since I’ve played fire emblem games in the past and usually it’s not a problem… but seeing Dimitri slowly but surely go fucking insane, snap someone’s neck with one hand, have both Edelegard and Byleth (who is a god at this point) speechless, and topping it off with evil laughter to boot. That man went through some shit and honestly I can’t blame him for snapping the way that he did.
I played through Blue Lions as my second run after Golden Deer (because come on, Claude) and when this scene rolled up out of know where I had to take a step back. That smirk at the end was perfect, it just encompassed that underlying brokenness of Dimitri.

The Edelgard being the flame emperor reveal however......eh, with the hints they dropped you could pretty much see that coming a mile away, the only thought I had however after figuring it out was how is Dimitri going to react to this?.
Don't be mistaken: the spear isn't the weapon, Dimitri is the weapon who happens to have a spear-looking thing in his hands Seriously, Dimitri is probably by far the most dangerous human being in the game in a straight fight
The first time watching this cutscene gave me chills. Everything from the unhinged laughter, to the brief smiles you catch when Dimitri is slaughtering a bunch of people and to Dimitri pushing a clearly worried Byleth aside - and may I remind you that sane Dimitri values good manners and respects Byleth, so he would never do that, and also our main character doesn't show emotion very often, so to see that much expression on their face as they try to stop one of the people they've managed to get close to from doing something he can't take back shows that this is serious. The crew really outdid themselves with this scene - it's incredibly powerful.
The face he makes when he laughs hysterically is AWESOME. It satisfies every single cell in my eyes and makes my brain release the happy hormones because LOOK AT THAT FACE. Look at how perfectly its animated. Look at the shadowing, the utter emotion in his face. Its fantastic
I was in shock and felt legitimately terrified of Dimitri when I first saw this. Blue lions was my first route so it added shock when I saw that Edelgard was the flame emperor.
Its times like these I wish crests were more important in the game. Like yeah they let you use relic weapons but otherwise they're just minor random buffs. I understand that if they were more significant it would unbalance the game between crest users vs others, but it undersells just how impactful they are. Dimitri's strength in this scene really shows just how terrifyingly strong a crest user on the battlefield can be, and gives a good reason for why they're so important in the lore.
Tbh FE4 showed the potential of having actually broken "crests" aka holy blood with the holy weapons. But yeah, they kinda break the game and make many non holy blood units invalidated too.
I knew my boi was gonna snap, so naturally I saved him for last and I’m glad I ended my experience with Blue Lions cause it’s the only timeline where Dimitri gets SOME level of therapy 😔
I love edelgard but this has to be one of those scenes i still come back to time to time because both this scene and dimitri himself are cool, amazing, and just batshit insane
At that point, the empire was already prepped to go to war and Hubert would probably had been left in charge or even the Death Knight. Edelgard wouldnt just let her dream die with her this early.
Imagine is Dimitri was actually real. Being able to kill 4 people in good armor with a single swing, crushing a man's skull with *one hand* (Takes about 2300 newtons of force), and being able to lift up a horse easily. Things weigh between 900-2000 lbs. Anyone would be scared for their life
I played Blue Lions first, so i originally thought it was like a rock-paper-scissors thing. Like if i picked Claude, Dimitri would be Flame Emeperor and if i picked Edelgard it'd be Claude. Imagine my surprise picking Edelgard next round and she still turned around like, "yea, I'm destroying the church still"
there's no subs. it's just the original jp audio which isn't even translated. The "subs" you see are just the script for the english dub which is fairly close at about 75-80% accuracy. Still no proper translation though

there's no subs. it's just the original jp audio which isn't even translated. The "subs" you see are just the script for the english dub which is fairly close at about 75-80% accuracy. Still no proper translation though
