“One of the few cars BMW can truthfully call the ultimate driving machine.” It’s a shame since there was next to no promotion for this platform. It’s merely an afterthought for BMW and it will most likely stay that way.
BMW thought they were doing less but it turns out that less was more. It really says something about how misguided BMW's leadership is about building good cars. BMW really needs a new exterior design lead, and someone to convince leadership to revamp their power steering system, then they'd be back to making great cars.

@@faheemabbas3965 I hear you! BMW is definitely not BMW of the past, they used to win every comparison test… a car enthusiast bought if they didn’t want the compromises of a dedicated sports car. BMW now builds go-fast, technology platforms… that are generally ugly! I forget the designed who said “It doesn’t cost any more money to make a car good looking”, BMW just have missed that memo. As for their crap power steering, why is it crap, so many other manufacturers hav got electric power steering figured out.
@@Scorpio1075 the steering was actually surprising to me too when I took delivery of mine. It's definitely not the worst I've had, but damn my old 2011 Ford Focus has a much better steering and that's just an econobox. To be fair, that car is known for its nice steering feel but still, I'd have expected the Z4 to be on the level.
Once the tyres are loaded up you can get a feel of what's happening, but driving straight gives you almost no feedback whatsoever. Very odd.
Anyway, that's just about the only complaint I've got about this car so it's still an amazing vehicle.

Have put 7800 miles on mine and absolutely love it! Sounds great, handling is direct, lightweight for a modern BMW, and with lowering and stiffer springs car just flies through the canyons.

I have 16,000 Kms on my 2022 Z4 M40i and have loved every minute of it. I traded in my 09' Saturn Sky Redline which I owned since 2010 and enjoyed every time I took it out. I thought I'd miss it more... I don't LoL. The Z4 almost felt like an updated "spiritual" successor to it strangely enough. I'm a standard transmission guy and have found my left foot searching for a clutch sometimes but the ZF transmission is WAY better than I thought it would be... and those exhaust burbles when going through the twisties... Like driving a four-wheel psychiatrist... best thing I've done for my mental health since my first motorcycle. But hey, he's right, not many of them out on the road, and I like that so maybe I shouldn't be telling you all how great it is.
for performance: supra. Lovely coupe and
for daily driving: Z4. As an Audi guy it hurts a little to say that Audi's departure from the B9 interior styling has me loving BMW's interior design a lot more, especially with the new iDrive8 (i know this is iDrive 7...still). The fact that BMW retains the control wheel alone sways me their way. Really quite a functional interior and aesthetically pleasing to look at. Yeah, this is a pretty fantastic GT car.

Thank you for the best Z4 POV Video I've seen! The driving impression is conveyed extremely well. This also includes the very good impression of the noise of the engine in the interior.
Thank you also for avoiding the constant presentation of yourself in the picture instead of the car, which is unfortunately a common practice.
That B58 3.0L turbo inline 6 is just a gem of an engine. Same one in the M340i, the Supra, the X5 xDrive 40i, the X7 xDrive 40i, the X3 M40i. It's a wonderful engine that definitely does not make 382 HP xD Definitely over 400 HP at least. The engine with the legendary ZF 8-speed is perfect. The way BMW tunes a torque converter to feel almost like a dual clutch is a testament to how transmissions should be tuned for performance.
It makes 384 whp. That dyno that showed the Supra at 400whp read high for every single car there.
@@2seepmine made 394 whp stock 2021 model and that was in hot weather. I’m sure 400whp or close stock is possible with good weather of course
M340i owner, I agree. It's a fantastic engine and transmission. I have a simple stage 1 tune and that alone turned it into a monster that scares my wife lol.
This video was perfect timing as I've been interested in this for the last few weeks for some reason. It's the Goldilocks of sports cars that'll perform how you like without beating you up. That, and I love the color.
I recently rented a 30i, the 4 cylinder turbo for a vacation down the California coast and what a joy. Absolutely loved the car. Even that was fast, turned and maneuvered wonderfully and it was comfortable, it gave you the right amount of confidence. May not be the most practical vehicle but could not have picked a better car for some cruising fun.
I ordered one back in May. It's sitting at port waiting for it's boat right now. After I test drove one I decided it would be my daily driver. Awesome car!

I'm in the process of upgrading my 30i to the M40i ... I got it in Portimao Blue and its on a ship right now.. hoping to get it the first week of October. That being said... the Z4 is a great daily car for anyone asking. Granted I've had the 30i for 2 years... so that's my current experience. It's roomy, has alot of trunk space, it's an easy drive but yet extremely fun TO drive with the top up or down as you see fit. (best with top down)
Nice do you have the cognac Interior or white? I think the classiest sexiest look is the frozen Grey with red and Portimao with cognac in sunlight. Thundernight white white is up there. I had a black z4 m40i with red interior which I loved. But a friend crashed it. Used to hate black colors on cars especially BMW big now I have alpine white z4 m40i with red interior and find myself missing the menacing look of the black. The z4 is the type of car that's perfect in darker colors because it makes it's gorgeous angles pop. The white hides it, whereas white on my 2015 m235i looked good because it hid the fact the m235i was rather bland looking shape wise. Well. I'm a pilot now and rarely drive or even like to drive. I now cruise past the normies at 170mph with good winds and look below from 4500-8500 feet above you and wwtxh normjes stuck in traffic and it Just feels special. There's nothing like flying. Takes a couple thousand pages worth or rules and knowledge to get started especially for someone with zero aviation knowledge, but it's doable. Definitely nothing like hoppjng in a car and pushing thr gas though. Any one infraction can get your pilots certificate permanently revoked
I have this engine in the X3 M40i and it’s absolutely glorious. Incredible how much mpgs it gets and how much ass it hauls. Best car I ever coulda bought my wife (bc I drive it all the time 😁)
If phone connectivity fails, a good thing to try is rebooting iDrive. To do that, hold down the power button (on the volume knob) for about 30 seconds. This used to happen a lot in my wife's 330i, and restarting the iDrive system fixed it every time.
I love mine. I've had it for year. There are a few around where I live (Surrey, UK), maybe 8 I see within a 5 mile radius. But its still a rare car to see. BMW should have marketed it, but maybe they spent their budget on SUVs

0:49 just FYI, there's a handle on the inside of the trunk door to the right of the dangling lock thing, so you can close the trunk without touching the outside. I find it funny that most people don't notice it because it's not very obvious, BMW could've put an arrow sticker pointing towards it or something.

Another great review, as always! How would you compare the Z4 M40i vs. the M4 Competition xDrive [convertible] in terms of pure fun? I know there are luxury bells and whistles in the M4 that the Z4 doesn't have, and the M4 has an S58 plus full M-suspension vs. a B58 with an M-sport diff. But now that the Z4 M40i will be coming with a manual for '25, how different does it feel in terms of pure playfulness? I bought a '24 M4 Comp convertible last year and absolutely love it, though a manual wasn't available in the drop top. In a dream world, it seems like adding a manual Z40 M40i would make for an amazing companion but only if the driving dynamics were significantly different between the two. Your thoughts?

People are sleeping on how exciting this car really is and because of that BMW is probably going to end production after 2024 model year.

I would buy this over the Supra and I'm not really a fan of convertibles. I appreciate you mentioning that this generation of B motors from BMW has proven to be reliable, because folks are still stuck in the past with saying that the BMW reliability is poor. I'm not saying they are Toyota reliable but from my family, friends myself and others experience from owning these newer generation BMWs, good reliability has been proven.
While the M40i has the better engine sound, the 30i is actually the better engine for the Z4. It doesn't lose much in terms of acceleration, especially during 0-30 which is what most people notice during daily driving, yet it is far more nimble due to the lesser weight at the front. The lower gas consumption and lower costs are an added bonus. Honestly, the inline 6, while a stellar engine, is far too much for this (and the 2 coupe). You don't need that much horsepower in public roads, yet you do definitely need the lower weight.
But you need that engine sound!

the way i see it, the z4 m40i is the supra for those who want more of a daily driver but still keep the amazing motor, the supra is for those who just want a hardcore b58 and dont care about it potentially being harsher than the z4
I had my 2020 now for four years. I love it. I haven’t had any problems. I wanted a convertible, so the Supra was never an option for me. I was coming from a Lexus IS350 and it was a very nice car but boring.
supra has a tighter cockpit, the older i drive system and is harder to get in and out of. The supra is also more track oriented, the z4 more of a GT. My 2020 z4 has no sqeaks, top up or down. I got 30 mpg on my current tank of gas. I don't hesitate to pass on local roads or the interstate. I stay mostly in the comfort mode without manual shifting getting 30 mpg. Put it into sport + and it is right up there with the track focused supra. Normal comfort mode it is a sleeper as far as obnoxious exhaust sounds go but hit the gas and the sound gets vicious without touching the sport button. Put it in sport and it sounds continuously angry.
Yup. We have a rare Pokémon basically. Keep it. It's value may drop at first but will go up again. Plus I can't tell you how many compliments I get on mine. I wish I had this car when I was like 21. Back then I had a 2015 m235i when it was rated number 1 car in car and driver magazines 10 best cars for 3 years in a row from 2015-2017. But if the z4 was out then, it would be number 1 for sure. Today, I'm more of a flier than driver. I'm a pilot now, so it's not as fun driving (unless in canyons or on thr track), when you can fly past normies at 140-180mph depending on winds in the air lol, as I watch them stuck in traffic Going 5mph. Point is everyone has a car and everyone drives. Once you can fly over people it's a whole different world. But still at least you and I drive a unique gem
Mine has Android auto, peak street road performance and price. My favorite mode is manual shifting (stick to the left) but let the car auto shifts on its own.

It really is better than the Supra, you get a BMW which will make you look richer, it’s a convertible and is more luxurious. Also similar price to a Supra.
Recently purchased a 2020 Z4 m40i with 20,000 miles. I'm of the opinion this will be my last car as not sold on the whole EV thing so the idea of ending my car history with a 3.0 turbo roadster doesn't seem like such a bad thing

I was in the market for a Supra as my midlife crisis birthday present to myself, but now I am seriously looking at the Z4. What a handsome car, but that gauge cluster is so ulgy. Its like a beautiful woman with everything, but she is cross eyed sheesh bmw.
Did you say 37 mpg on the highway? That's insane for a turbo 6 making that much power. Hell, the NA V6 in my Lexus got like 25 on highway 😂
It gets 23 city 31/32 high way if you drive it in regular mode and drive it like grandma but if u floor it it gets way less lol

@@bman1668 mine was a 2015 IS350 F Sport. I'd get 15 around the city and 25 on the highway. My C8 Corvette gets better gas mileage and has twice as much power, lol. Gas mileage aside, the Lexus was a great vehicle.

depends if you want the gen 1 or gen 2 b58 for Gen 1. You can get a 2017 M240i for a really good price for gen 2 a used M340i or some others
What are the differences to the gen 1 and gen 2 b58? A 2016-2018 340i for under $35-40k sounds like a solid choice to me.

Cylinder head/manifold. all of these come into play a lot especially if you want to tune. Or if you leave it stock the gen2 cars comes with more power from factory

Because M2 is a joke now. As a matter of fact I got my z4 new at like $1000-15000 less than a brand new M4, and basically the same price as a slightly used M3/M4.
There's a reason it's priced at like $75-78k brand new specced out and starts at a price slightly higher than the M2 (the m40i). It's not about raw power, it's about beauty, luxury, and oh man the performance. It beats the m2 comp and f82 M4 id drive on the tracks all day STOCK. Tuned Holy chit it DESTROYS the M2 Comp and especially the f82. It handles so fkn well. This car is wider than an m2 comp or as wide as the f80 m3 and I think as wide as the new g80, but shorter, less long, and shorter wheelbase and you sit right in front of the rear axle so your basically at the back of the entire car, so you get tons of traction and so much fkn fun. Plus it weighs about 400-600lbs LESS than an M2, and looks about 2000 times better
