Because it's the only car that has a unique look and is rare. All their other cars just look the same and fade into the background of "other dull cars on the road too."
Maybe that's because there really are no M cars on the road anymore. All I see are soccer moms in x5s, and 3 series. Rarely do I see a unique looking 5 series... and that should speak volumes. It's like they've become super cars. I see more mclarens and lamborghinis than I see m3s. Whenever I see a bmw with a large grille it's like I'm seeing an actor in the next A-list movie.
I was at the dealership getting a tire replaced last week and saw one of these. I had totally forgotten the Z4 existed but it really is a beautiful car. But yeah the price tag should not be the same as a M2.
The dealer will probably gouge you on the M2. I'd imagine you could actually haggle over price on a Z4. Still, there's no manual option, and the M2 will crush a Z4.
I live where this car is built and a new M2 Coupe costs 90.000€ and while thing costs only 55.000€ In Germany the Z4 4 cylinder cost 50k vs 75k for the M2. That's not a small difference. Also there is a manual Z4 available. I guess this car isn't meant for US markets. C8 Corvettes here cost far north of a 100k so nobody would ever compare this car that one.
The issue that is always been a problem with the Z4 is price their Porsche boxster money and if you're looking for a status symbol The boxster will always win
I've been an owner of this vehicle for 2 years. Gradually modified it with BBS forged wheels, KW V3 Clubsport coilover, big brake kit, FI exhaust system, and chip tuning.. Driving the car on streets or pushing in touge is just a wonderful experience.
@@TML34 When I bought the z4, the f87 m2c seemed like a no brainer. It turns out the 4 cylinder roadster is possibly a better teacher for me as a first time rear wheel drive vehicle owner. As I upgrade the car, I can feel the difference each time and adapt my skill to it because of the car’s ‘low starting point’ but great mechanical potential (thanks to Toyota’s co-developing). I'm evolving with the car together. From where I live, we have no track but plenty of very twisted touge. Feeling the limit of the dynamics is more fun than absolute speed. F87 is great without doubt. They are just different animals
It ruined the entire thing, It has really killed car culture IMO. Mini and VW dropping the manual transmission, almost no budget performance non-SUVs left. I can't stand the body lines, riding position, driving dynamics, fuel economy, price, overall aesthetic and image of any SUV. I like following the products for some reason but I can't afford anything new and nice that I would like, so that leaves me looking back in time for cars I might be interested in one day.
How. This thing is 60 grand. It makes complete sense that a chump with that much money would buy a crossover. Heck you could buy a truck or body on frame suv with that. Plus crossovers are just a return to the orginal car bodies. Originally sedans from the early 20th century are very SUV shaped. We are just going back to the originality.
Yet another trend spreading from the USA elsewhere. I don't know what could accomplish to bring that nation (back? ever?) to sanity. And they still pretty much own the EU, via NATO.
The Z4 is the one BMW that truly interests me. It's better looking than an M2, M3, or M4, and it's pretty small and light. It's also a drop-top. The B58 is great. It's totally an appealing product, though a bit of a hard sell for the money.
@@hotdog9262Yes, but sound. It’s a bit like getting the super efficient AMG i4 for your Lotus Emira. Sure, it’s more “Lotus” with a lower weight and COG, but most people will still go for that screaming supercharged V6.

It’s all preference though, so I can understand what you’re saying.
I own a 2007 Z4 Coupe that I love. It’s amazing that the company that bills its vehicles as the Ultimate Driving Machine doesnt want to dominate the premium sports car area. But SUV’s sell so I get it
Ive got the same car and feel the same way about modern BMW. I am starting to feel the need for some more practicality and think the most modern BMW I can go for, while still retaining what I want is the OG M2.
@@austinnafziger4159 i have a 2018 440i GC as a daily and I highly recommend it. The b58 is potent and the backseats and liftgate of the F36 make it practical.
Most people who got 60k see they can get a big more practical SUV for that price. Even most rich people who this is for would probably only have one car. For how small it is I think the average consumer doesn't see the value for what you get. Only die hard car lovers or the very wealthy could justify this.
Glad to see this car get some recognition. Despite being less of a sports car and more of a GT, I feel like this is one of the best cars they make without going to an M. I had the chance to drive a loaner for about 30 minutes and it was truly a blast even in the 4 cylinder form. It is fairly niche and feels kinda similar to others smaller bmws, but I wonder how popular it would have been if they took the time to give it its own dedicated chassis.

As part of the BMW-Toyota joint venture, they engineered the wind buffetting issue into the Surpa so it couldn't compete with the Z4. It's topdown in a Z4 or completely buttoned-up in a Surpra!🤣
Drove this for the first time (M40i model) this weekend at the BMW UDE and was blown away. It feels more like a big boy BRZ than a modern BMW. The chassis, suspension, and steering tuning are fantastic. And the seats just hug you and keep you firmly positioned

I am very glad BMW forgot about this car. I hope they forget about it for a long time and no one in corporate realizes it's still being manufactured. Like some exec wakes up and thinks "Oh yeah, gotta discontinue the Z4" then goes out to a discotheque and starts binge drinking and gets distracted by all the lights and wakes up the next day and completely forgets about the Z4 again. Instead, he wakes up inspired by the euroclub scene from the night before and decides more resources need to be devoted to interior ambient lighting in their SUV's.
I too hope they forget about it, that way they won't restyle it in the style of BMW's more recent ehh.. let's call them 'attempts' at a new design language.
They aren't gonna keep this around. The Z4 platform is only 3 generations old. They won't bother doing a refresh spending money. Like Mark said, 2 seat sports cars doesn't sell. SUV's and electric cars do which is where BMW is heading. You can see that with their new interior with the curved screen and all on screen functions. They are copying Tesla and are getting current customers ready and condition for their all electric lineup. Pretty sure other manufacturers are doing the same electric cars are future
@unicornpirate7427 they're also too expensive for most as toys, almost $70k, no way, they need be around $30k, so people can buy and drive to work or as weekend toy,
At the end of the day I traded in my SUV for a BMW i4 e40 msport, which has plenty of room under the hatch for bicycles or the dump run. As the epitome of the old white dude who should retire (71 tomorrow), I’m seriously considering the Z4 M40i to replace our Audi S4 when it reaches its use-by date. Thirty years of motorcycle road racing helped me accept that operating race cars (and liter bikes) on the street has a pleasure-frustration ratio of 1 to 99. In my dotage, I want a car with decent performance and dynamics that won’t punish me in daily driving. The C8 ‘vette might have been a contender but I can’t abide its big booty. A Cayman or 911 would be nice, but I’m unwilling to pay the premium. The LC500 looks to be a great gentleman’s tourer, but it’s too big and too fat for my taste. There are few options other than the Z4 in the rarefied breed of old guy car that I’m looking for.
BMW has always pumped out roadsters just to forget about them. The Z3, the first Z4, the second Z4,, and now this Z4. I was very lucky to cane a Z4 M Coupe--with its 6MT and its 3.2L I6 that revved to the stratosphere--around a track about 15 years ago,, and it's STILL one of the best memories I can recall behind the wheel. The perfect, streetable track toy. Real shame what's happened with BMW over the past decade.
@@japanwatchconnection it’s like every other successful OEM with a mixed lineup, which is rarer and rarer nowadays. Porsche has the Cayenne and Macan to thank for the continued existence of the 781 and 911, but unlike BMW, they’ve put more than an iota of thought and R&D into those platforms
I own the 2022 Z4 M40I. The car is amazing. I am in my 50's. Why did I pay 76k for a Z4? Because I can and this car is the easter egg of the BMW line up. I am an enthusiast. And this car is a great example of great BMW. I intend to keep this car for many years. And I think it is the best looking BMW they have made in a very long time. That's my opinion and that is why I bought it. I have owned BMW's from E46, E92 to the X3M. This is by far the best handling most dynamic BMW I have ever driven. I did get the blue and regret that a bit it really gets a lot of attention. So many people never knew it exists.
But did you compare it to the Supra which should prove to be more reliable after being tweaked by Toyota? Let's face it, BMW is not in the same league when it comes to cost of ownership past the warranty.
@@davepaturno4290Well, the thing is that it's easier and cheaper for BMW to have the exact same engine, transmission and related hardware in this as they put in the Supra. The same as in all their cars with the b48 and b58 engines, so at the end of the day this ends up being as reliable as the Supra. From what I've read all current BMWs that share drivetrains with the Supra have been incredibly solid VS their cars before the Toyota collaboration.
@@davepaturno4290 I did compare it to the Supra. The Supra styling is not 100% for me. I can't have a car I don't like the looks of 100% when spending this kind of money. I also wanted a convertible. After some heart problems I have had since 2009 I decided I would fill my bucket list of an amazing convertible. Supra can't provide that. The Supra's tech is dumbed down a bit I believe iDrive 6? The B58 is proving to be one of BMW's greatest motors. Cost of ownership? Well... I paid 20k more than a Supra. So my decision to buy this wasn't really based on cost of ownership. I am not a rich guy but I do ok and just love everything about this car. I will tell you I work for Toyota. The Supra is amazing and wonderful gift from BMW and Toyota. Both cars are amazing, it's a good time to be a car guy.
@@DrivinZ I am going to do spacers too. Suspension I might do later as it ages a bit. Really I am happy with it right now. Out of the box it is best handling car I have ever owned.
I own a 2022 white on white built to maximum S30Drive i spec...it is true this car gets more attention than the 20 911's sitting at your local Cars and Coffee, and chances are you will be the only one there, or even the only one you'll EVER see, depending on where you live. In 1.5 years of ownership in Virginia, I have never seen another current gen Z4 that looks like mine, and have rarely seen one at all. On road rallies with M4's, Nissan GTR's and 911s this car holds its own on public roads. On a track its obviously a different story but on your favorite country road this 255 hp might as well be 400. You can stay with higher horsepower cars, as Mark indicates with such great dynamics you can hardly overdrive this car---its a ton of fun. SO glad I bought it.
This car is dope. A roadster with a good interior, good handling, unique. What’s not to like. Let a dentist buy it new and pick one up used in a few years
That’s a great idea. Mine is a 2022 and I figured I’d sell it after warranty but I like it so much, I would gladly extend the warranty and hang on to it. Thanks.
Ive got the 2022 Z4 M40i. I use it how it's designed to be used. The rear-end almost never breaks out on dry pavement, and you have to want it to break out on wet road to get the rear to slide (Florida wet. Running new Michelin Pilot Super Sports). I do notice bump-steer on occasion (front end feels like it's not tracking perfectly straight when opening it up hard due to toe-in/toe-out of rear wheels, I believe...like a little kind of front-end drift on lift when hammering it at certain speeds). Other than that, it's a ridiculously fast rocket that sticks to the road, even hitting rises on turns. I love this car. I chose it over the 911, Boxster, Jag F-Type. Road noise is minimal with top up and down, and the top takes up zero trunk space. I fit 10 bags of groceries in there, or all my golf clubs, though the bag is a bit too big for the trunk...the entire bag/clubs fit no prob in the front seat with roof down. Bag is easy to get in with the top up or down. Done. The wind screen takes 100% of the buffeting out - even doing well over 100 on the freeway...so I've heard people say haha. Top up: sounds like a quiet sedan at all speeds. Though, every kid who stole their parent's sports cars will be on you wanting to race.
I bought my garage kept mint condition 2019 30i Z4 last year with 5,000 miles for $50k. I think it’s one the best made and driving BMWs made right now. It just does everything perfectly, plus it’s beautiful to look at
Oh wow. Thank you. I just went and looked and omg why is this not _the_ version of the car? Why are automakers so against clown shoes? Why is the Audi S5 "coupe" available with 4doors and a _sportback_ hatch when it could have been two doors and an Avant tail? /rant Maybe instead of drawing customers into the dealership (since they wouldn't market them, naturally) shooting brakes just cause customers to rethink their SUV purchase, ask about the clown shoe, find out they all sold out within 24 hours of launch, and walk away disgusted? 😂
@@OdyTypeR yeah they are damn cool, but sadly pretty rare these days. I think last the time such a clown shoe was built was a modded Aston martin by zagato. Generally, I think the normal - non exotic - auto makers are just focusing on what appeals to the masses and what sells best…
I never really liked Z4s, but honestly the styling on this generation is mint. The Supra got 120% of the attention, but I honestly like the Z4 better, at least looking at it on the internet.
I’ve got a manual 2003 BMW Z4 roadster 3.0i and I love my car, it’s been my daily driver for like 12 years :) I still like these modern Z4s though, although this one took a bit more warming up to the looks. It definitely grew on me! If I had unlimited funds, I would buy the Z4 M40i in black or purple for sure. And a Z8 for a weekend car :)
So cool that you do a follow up on the Z4. I own a M40i unicorn. I owned a Boxster Mk 1 and wanted the 4.0, but the price was out of the charts. Superhappy with the car. A bit heavy in the front on track because of the six, but a great cruiser. A great all rounder. Classic?
I'm guessing it'll be a future classic compared to its BMW contemporaries, if the M2 Comp doesn't steal its thunder yet again. It'll take a long while, though. Previous Z-cars weren't really a high water mark for chassis dynamics so this Z4 will have to overcome that added burden too I reckon. Have to say, though - after seeing everything else from BMW of late, the Z4 is the only model left that even remotely hews close to their classic design language. That's gotta count for something.
Exactly, that's why I left BMW after 5 BMWs. And every new generation screams for attention:" Look at me!" They are no long drivers' car, neither are they elegant.
Bought my Z4 2 years ago and still loving it. Small, light and nimble, unlike new BMWs. Looks much better than new generation as well. If everything goes well, i hope to use it until end of life (mine or Z4s) :-)
I ended up buying a G83 (Vert) M4, but the M440i Z4 swayed me heavily once I drove it. It really is a complete convertible car and amazing experience of speed and luxury w/B58. Amazing!
I'm still surprised BMW made this Z4. I have the previous generation Z4 and I'm constantly surprising even BMW enthusiasts with it because everyone forgot BMW made it. I distinctly remember seeing an ad by BMW while there were still a few years of that Z4 production left to go and "see our entire lineup" and the photo didn't even include it. I'm glad this one exists but I'm really confused about why they bothered considering how much they seem to want to forget about it themselves...
Come on man! As a seventy seven year old “geezer” who currently owns two BMW’s an X3 and a X5 plus an Audi A5 Cabriolet. I’d like to say we have not given up on life’s pleasures just adapted to limitations imposed on our aging bodies. I owned numerous “sports and muscle “ cars including two Corvettes, a Mach 1 mustang “ , 240Z, RX7 and four Porsches including two Boxster S and a 991.1 911 Carrera 4. There comes a time in your life when comfort and practicality take a higher role over high performance and ultimate speed. That’s all for now, got to head to Olive Garden for the early bird special in my A5 Cabriolet with heated and cooled seats and air scarf!
This is the only decent looking vehicle BMW still makes. You have to give it that. I don't know if BMW has the four cylinder timing chain issues figured out, but if they have, and if you can find one at a reasonable price, then it would be a nice toy.
I have a '99 BMW M Coupe, and this is such a far cry from that car :) It is pretty neat how far it has evolved, but just not the original spirit it used to have at all.
Take the M40, mod the suspension and you have an incredible car and one that is more of a drivers car than any M enthusiast car in the current lineup - apart from a manual M2, perhaps. Absolutely love mine - just needs a manual option. And I came out of a G80cx M3 . Also, BMW sells many more Z4's in Europe and elsewhere than in the US.
In sport plus you don’t need to mod nothing. Don’t forget, The z4-m40i beat the m2 by 6 seconds on the Nurburgring. That alone should tell you how it handles.
I owned a z4 6 cylinder for 2 years, then I drove a buddies F-type v6 and immediately sold the Beemer and bought the Jag. Best 2 seater drop top for moderate money on the market. And the SOUNDS! Intoxicating!
Let’s not forget to be glad Toyota and BMW made two seat sports cars at all. And from what I glean, both good ones. Thanks Toyota and BMW for building these cars!
I recently bought a used 2021 Z4 3.0 with 11k miles with the blue interior and brown leather interior (same as this one) with every possible option on it for $41k. That's not cheap, but sticker was $63+k. I absolutely love it. It's a blast to drive. The brakes are very touchy and it does not come with ventilated seats, but other that, it is a perfect car for what I want. Top down cruising, plenty of power, fun in the twisties, great gas mileage and very comfortable with all the advance tech and creature comforts. Plus, it's a real head turner-not many on the road, also. What more could you want?
If I could afford to I would love to get one of these in M40i trim CPO'd and enjoy the hell out of it. It's the perfect combination of sports car, grand tourer and cruiser with a phenomenal drivetrain, great interior/tech and good looks. It's got a bigger, bougee Miata vibe. Such an underrated car now.. I never liked the Z3 or Z4 but this generation is really nice. I have a feeling it's gonna get killed off soon though..
I have the m40i version. White/magma red black rims. What an Incredible car and where I’m from NS, Canada, I literally have not seen another one ever on the road…love it
A marked up 50k-60k BRZ made me buy a 4 cyl 2 series with a track pack and manual. $20k cheaper than the M2 of same generation, it does handle track driving very gracefully and the brakes are not a limiting factor since its a lighter car.
As always your insights are spot on; it looks as though BMW the driving machine has morphed into BMW the cash cow (or in the case of the Label Red a cash sow). For everyone who loves driving lighter cars are always more enjoyable even when they're not necessarily the fastest. The more fun you can have at or below the speed limits the better.
BMW needs to forget about more of their cars if this is the result. It should be noted, however, that the BMW B48 is a marvel of engineering prowess. A symphony of mechanical perfection, meticulously crafted to deliver an unparalleled driving experience. First and foremost, let us acknowledge the mesmerizing displacement of 2.0 liters. A numerical value that resonates with automotive enthusiasts, evoking a sense of power and dominance. Within this voluminous chamber lie four cylinders, each one a testament to precision and harmony. Together, they dance in perfect synchrony, harmonizing the symphony of combustion. In conclusion, the BMW B48 is a masterstroke of engineering ingenuity. Its melodious harmony, its raw power, its meticulous attention to detail-all combine to create an experience that transcends mere transportation. It is a symphony on wheels, a magnum opus of automotive excellence. The B48 is more than an engine; it is an ode to the pursuit of perfection. Well Done.

The Z4 is the epitome of what is wrong with BMW lately. They don't care enough about certain products they should care for (Z4) and focuses on the wrong cars they do awful with (8 series, XM). I really don't think BMW will change at all until their current CEO is replaced. Z4 has absolutely no marketing done to it by BMW compared to how hard Toyota has pushed the Supra. It is sad. I miss the days where BMW prioritize their lineup correctly.
Not really. Toyo approached them to collab to make both cars. If toyo didn't reach them for the collab then they wouldn't have made another Z4 anytime soon since the last gen sold terribly.
The funny part is that it sells way better than the Supra in Europe, despite it having genuinely no marketing work done for it. Not in the US granted, but still.

That's indeed super interesting, Americans have so much better car prices than we Europeans do. Imagine being able to get a Corvette with 60k EUR in Europe. Great review guys - I owned the older iteration of a Z4 from 2004 - drove it from Calgary to Monterey and back through Vegas - what a blast! It was great on the highway. We test drove a newer one last year but stuck with an M240 as it is just more practical. B58 forever. I enjoy watching your reviews - the only time I would ever skip an SG review is for an EV and I have even watched some of those. It gets too cold where I live to have reliable EVs. Thanks for your hard work. Is it Zee 4 or Zed 4?
Yep, like almost all sports cars. I got a 1-year-old one with 4k km on the clock (that's like 2.5k miles I think) for 48k when a new one specced like that would've costed almost 80k. Got away with robbery lmao, and it appreciated in value in the meantime.
I'd get the Supra just simply because it wears its capabilities on its sleeve, even if people moan about it having a BMW instead of Toyota engine. This tries to disguise the same platform in a conservative wrapper. I liked the old Z4 coupes (pre-2008) and the old Z3s (even the clown shoe M coupes), which had character.
I will make one comment. I am a Z4 owner and the 100% best thing you can do with your car is get rid of the run-flat tyres. They are shit in every sense. Just take a tyre plug kit with you and have some roadside insurance. My Z4 felt like a brand new car with regular tyres and was more grabby in the corners. And the road noise is not an issue anymore. Get good tyres and you’ll be so damn happy with your Z4. You’ll want to drive it even more!!!
I don't think I'm ironic enough to appreciate the humor of the AI cuts/edits Mark throws into his videos. It feels like an inside joke I'm not in on even though I've been watching this channel since Turbowski's shop.
I test drove the Z4 M40i and I love it . I plan on buying one . I’m keeping my X5 Xdrive 40i 😎 PS I think it’s better than the M440i convertible I drove.
My husband currently has the Z4 M40i, Z3 and 440i convertible. He loves them all but the Z4 has replaced his previous dream car of an M3. I’m considering an M3 or a Boxster. Still undecided… 😅
I would bet this is normally a 2nd or 3rd car for most buyers, something for occasional weekend, top-down fun. (For people who can afford $60K for a 2nd or 3rd car that is.). And that’s a shame, because it seems like it would make a great and fun daily driver.
The 64K price isn't what most people re specing out on the 30i model, this has the otpional track handling package, likely has 18 inch wheel upgrade, leather, headsup, wireless charging, remote start, etc. etc. etc. several of those bits aren't so important, can get it 4 cyl down to $55K well appointed, I test drove one and it was great, also drove a M40i with fewer options, it was an interesting comparison, the 4 cylinder was more punchy and torquey than I was expecting, the B58 inline 6 sounded better and was so smooth in power delivery...both were extremely well built, very solid, I was impressed
An excellent video about a relatively nice-looking and well-driving BMW (it's like an echo of BMW's past). I love it that Mark took the mickey out of the company for being a-holes with their attitude towards the thing. As both he and Jack suggested, it really is too bad. But... I sure wish I was getting my cataracts out, because I'll bet my gang would really like the car!
I was put onto the z4 from another channel, the e86, the coupe manual combo sold it for me and while i cannot afford it now, i can still appretiate it. that car along with the e89, while im not a fan of the convertible i do love the more spacious and premium feel inside that car even though i dont own either of these vehicles i still do love the Z4 family.
Honestly, the Z4 is the only BMW currently in their lineup that I care about whenever I see one on the road.
Same!
Because it's the only car that has a unique look and is rare. All their other cars just look the same and fade into the background of "other dull cars on the road too."
Aston Martin for me. Drool
Heh, at least you get to see one.....

I’m sure the price delta over the M2 is for the convertible but I agree.
The dealer will probably gouge you on the M2. I'd imagine you could actually haggle over price on a Z4. Still, there's no manual option, and the M2 will crush a Z4.
I live where this car is built and a new M2 Coupe costs 90.000€ and while thing costs only 55.000€
In Germany the Z4 4 cylinder cost 50k vs 75k for the M2.
That's not a small difference. Also there is a manual Z4 available. I guess this car isn't meant for US markets. C8 Corvettes here cost far north of a 100k so nobody would ever compare this car that one.
@@b0nz1officialobviously. no one is comparing the 4 cyl car to the M2
Driving the car on streets or pushing in touge is just a wonderful experience.
why did you buy this car if you wanted a "sports car"? You should have got an M2 by the sounds of it.
Because it’s his money and he can buy whatever he wants!
Is so sad what this turn to SUV's did to the automotive industry.
Well, it's what the people want. If any more than about 5% of the population wanted cars with manual transmissions, we'd still have them.
@@toddstevens8506 It's not what the people want, it's what the marketing campaign made people think they want.
Yet another trend spreading from the USA elsewhere. I don't know what could accomplish to bring that nation (back? ever?) to sanity.

The Z4 is the one BMW that truly interests me. It's better looking than an M2, M3, or M4, and it's pretty small and light. It's also a drop-top. The B58 is great. It's totally an appealing product, though a bit of a hard sell for the money.
the 4 popper easily gets to 250+ wheel hp with a tune. few need more then that for regular sporty driving. and it will handle better then the i6
@@hotdog9262Yes, but sound. It’s a bit like getting the super efficient AMG i4 for your Lotus Emira. Sure, it’s more “Lotus” with a lower weight and COG, but most people will still go for that screaming supercharged V6.

"less wind buffeting with the top down than the Supra with the windows open" 😂
As part of the BMW-Toyota joint venture, they engineered the wind buffetting issue into the Surpa so it couldn't compete with the Z4. It's topdown in a Z4 or completely buttoned-up in a Surpra!🤣
Drove this for the first time (M40i model) this weekend at the BMW UDE and was blown away. It feels more like a big boy BRZ than a modern BMW. The chassis, suspension, and steering tuning are fantastic. And the seats just hug you and keep you firmly positioned
I’m a big boy with a BRZ. Also want one of these eventually as I noticed prices for the M40i 6cyl version continue to fall.

I really like how this car looks, hopefully BMW's new design team doesnt refresh this one.
I'd say it's safe from that fate considering BMW forgot it exists lol
not being refreshed makes it better, not worse
It's gonna be discontinued
Same here. The GT4 crew was jealous of my top down in fantastic weather. Really this Z4 with a modded suspension, spacers is a phenomenal drivers car!
@@davepaturno4290 I did compare it to the Supra. The Supra styling is not 100% for me. I can't have a car I don't like the looks of 100% when spending this kind of money. I also wanted a convertible. Yeah but frankly the auto ZF is pretty fantastic and i would argue pairs really well with all this power…just came back from testing driving the M40i.
My z4- m40i is insane fast. Damn what a machine. They downplay these Z4’s forgetting that car n driver got 3.5 0-60 time.

Thanks.
Absolutely love my Z4 M40i. I get compliments everywhere I go in the car. Most people don't know what it is when they see it.
When I picked mine up in person it looked much wider and better in real life. I hear people say that often too.
It just does everything perfectly, plus it’s beautiful to look at
There is also a z4 touring concept of this being a shooting brake. Looks awesome
Oh wow. Thank you. I just went and looked and omg why is this not _the_ version of the car?
Why are automakers so against clown shoes? Why is the Audi S5 "coupe" available with 4doors and a _sportback_ hatch when it could have been two doors and an Avant tail? /rant
Maybe instead of drawing customers into the dealership (since they wouldn't market them, naturally) shooting brakes just cause customers to rethink their SUV purchase, ask about the clown shoe, find out they all sold out within 24 hours of launch, and walk away disgusted? 😂
@@OdyTypeR yeah they are damn cool, but sadly pretty rare these days. I think last the time such a clown shoe was built was a modded Aston martin by zagato.

I still like these modern Z4s though, although this one took a bit more warming up to the looks. It definitely grew on me! If I had unlimited funds, I would buy the Z4 M40i in black or purple for sure. And a Z8 for a weekend car :)
This should have been the basis for the CSL. The fact that there's an X6M but no M version of this is insanity.
‘The rustang’ absolutely sent me
BMWs tagline went from the ultimate DM to "we're a Mercedes with a sports package" in 20 years.
I think even Mercedes has better steering feel today

40i variant starts at over $66k. That is insane compared to other B58 cars. You gotta really want a concetible to pick this over the other options.
"You gotta really want a concetible to pick this over the other options" -- exactly, and that's WHY this car is a DEDICATED convertible car, for people who WANT a convertible first and foremost. The options in that arena are not that great (as long as Miata is ruled out), so they dictate the price a bit.
@@andycalifornia426 They can just get a hardtop 4 series.
@@ProudFilthyCasual Some people want a classic SLK-style convertible, not a convertible SEDAN. Yes, the 4 series is pretty much the size of the 3 series.
@@andycalifornia426 Yeah but two seaters just don't sell the same. The market decided that with it's dollars. Some people weren't enough to justify.
@@ProudFilthyCasual Be it as it may, here's BMW offering a 2-seater convertible to people who WANT a 2-seater convertible. All I'm saying is some people DO want a car like that, and I ain't gonna say "stupid, you could have a car that you don't want but is faster for that money!"
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 I'm not surprised the old one sold terribly, it was just super soft.
Now BMW has to convince people they went back to the more fun to drive E86 formula, except they don't care about doing it.
@@xIcarus227 I'd say they're concentrated on their other platforms more than anything since, the supra kinda takes all the reason to even bother with making it more fun or better when toyso kinda doing that with the supra,(plus the price tag difference since the mk5s cheaper by 10-15k here in the US compared to the Z4).
I am surprised you didn't review a m40i version.
I' had mine since december 2019. Absoluely no regrets.
Hmm, well, some reviewers should realize that not everybody wants to drive hell bent for leather. I like the sound of a corvette V8 just like anybody else, but beyond that I couldn't care less that the person in that corvette is faster than me. Whatever you are driving, there is always a bigger kid on the block. I'm not interested in pissing contests. I like my Z4 just the way it is.
To me it's interesting you compare the Corvette to the Z4; in the Netherlands a C8 costs €150000, a Z4 €55000; totally different compared to the US prices unfortunately.
That's indeed super interesting, Americans have so much better car prices than we Europeans do. Imagine being able to get a Corvette with 60k EUR in Europe. It would completely demolish all local sports cars. The Mustang partially did that already when it was released for our market but the Corvette would be even better.
@@xIcarus227 Indeed, unbelievable, a Corvette for 60K, i wish! A V8 Mustang is because our stupid co2 taxes almost as expensive as a G14BMW (8 series). 130K for a Mustang, can you believe it! The 2.3Ecoboost is 62K but the V8 is what you want, not the 4 banger lol.
@@MarkGelderland 130k for a Mustang holy hell! Is that in Netherlands?
@@xIcarus227 Yes. Ridiculous. Co2 tax...
It is pretty cheap to rent the 20i version of this car from Sixt in Germany. They also have the M40i (for more than twice as much). Even the 20i is wonderful.
almost bought a Z4 M40i a few months ago, wishing I would have, ugh....like another comment, its the only bmw I find interesting when I see it, other than maybe an M3, 4 or 5, just because of they spectacle of what they are. I may still go for one before the production run is over, and keep it for many years to come
Great review guys - I owned the older iteration of a Z4 from 2004 - drove it from Calgary to Monterey and back through Vegas - what a blast!
I wanted to hear the rest of the dream 😢
it wasn't a dream 👀
"Z4 could be so much more" (buys and tunes a Corolla).
It's hard to understand car reviewers these days. Even SavageGeese now.
HAHAHAHA when the robot showed up, I laughed out loud 😂😂
I swear Mark is high on something.
he was pretending to be an old man
He's high on life and alimony payments from his ex wife
For what its worth, these are trading in mid $40's with 10k miles used. They depreciate like CRAZY.
Yep, like almost all sports cars. I got a 1-year-old one with 4k km on the clock (that's like 2.5k miles I think) for 48k when a new one specced like that would've costed almost 80k.
Got away with robbery lmao, and it appreciated in value in the meantime.
So much for striving to make the ultimate driving machine
Imagine if BMW release a version of this with an s58 and a manual unannounced.
I own a 2023 Z4 and it’s a great little sports car. Great road trip car too.
I’m keeping my X5 Xdrive 40i 😎
PS I think it’s better than the M440i convertible I drove.
End music was perfect for the vibe of this review.
We need previous z4 video e89
I think the last sentence sums it all up, including BMWs attitude.
I could go for the 4 cylinder for $50k, i6 for $55k.
I’ve had several of the e85 models and still own one now and look forward to when the G29 depreciates enough for me to afford one
