I’m so pleased that BMW threw caution out and now offers this manual in the Z4. If they did the same with the M340i, there would be one in my garage as a daily driver. I really wanted a new 3-pedal weekend car before they all go away, so I ordered and now have a 2024 Cayman GTS 4.0. Since I do track days, a convertible like the Z4 or Boxster wouldn’t be suitable. I hope that a lot of people order the Z4 manual to reward BMW for taking the risk to build it for the hardcore enthusiast market.
You're spot on about the top color. It needs to match the seats. My Jaguar F-Type (with manual transmission) is British Racing Green with a tan top. I know I'm biased, but I think that it looks great.

First I tried a manual for a couple of hours in may on winding roads, then discussed with both BMW mechanic and the Porsche dealer why the new manual gearboxes are NOT like the old ones from the 70s-80s-90s, where you could brake with the gear and, not least, "hang on the gear" on winding roads. ''The reason for both manuel BWM and Porsche'', the Porsche dealer said, ''that today second gear is capable of tackling 120 km/h (75 miles?). Far beyond the good old days. -That's the reason! Order the Z4 in May. Was told at the beginning of July that my Z4 will start construction in +/- September. Delivery December .. Fun review. Almost picked up a Z4 M40i last summer, held off, just didn't feel right at the last second...was going to wait...life intervened as it often does, ended up with 2023 Miata GT and really love it...but its not THIS car, looks great, really happy they made it1
Absolutely agree with the manual corvette C8 proposition. Bring the manual back with the Grand Sport model priced between a stingray and a Z06 and watch it sell like hotcakes
I have a z4 20i manual, not fast at all, but it’s a lifestyle thing. I live in Hong Kong n I believe it’s probably the only one in the city! From day one they had planned a manual with the tooling ready n investments made. Not sure why they made it such a novelty.
YES INDEED! Miata is the answer for 99% of enthusiasts. $80,000 is simply waaaaaay too much money for most people but this is a car designed for the lucky rich! “Socialist” middle class enthusiasts love the Miata.
Great review Moto - just 1 correction - your review car there has the “free” color (San Remo Green Metallic). The other color that has the up charge is a frozen color (Frozen Deep Green Metallic)

Had a 1987 M Roadster that was pure bliss: Arrest-me-red with black and red interior. It was a 6-cylinder rocket ship - and just about every day I regret selling it.
Not only is that car special because of the transmission, it is spec'd in a very nice color. So many cars are sold in boring colors. That green is absolutely beautiful. Also, do we care about three tenths of a second in a car that is all about the pleasure of driving? Absolutely not. The car is plenty fast for most people.
Driving a maunal softtop 2022 MX-5 today, I applaud BMW for sticking to what car enthusiasts want the most, the sheer joy of driving. 👏👏👏 Very nice review as well. This car will however probably never see daylight in the EU because of the new emission rules. (Hell, they've even quietly killed off the 2.0L MX-5 2024 model so now, only the 1.5L is avaliable, come next year) Tough times to be an "auto driver" not just an "auto rider"... 🤷♂
Just sold my Z3M Roadster owned for 20 years. Heavy clutch did my left knee & hip in. So now own R231 SL500. But I've not ruled out a manual if new Z4 clutch lighter perhaps. Meantime I'm really delighted with my SL
Not a problem. If you want to compare the c8 convertible, well be prepared to pay more as in well over $80k as tested up to $100k. The c8 convertible is also heavier. It’s over 3,700 lbs significantly more than the z4, which as we all know as a front engine car should weigh much more. The c8 likely is a little faster largely due to the fact it’s mid engine/traction because we know Chevy horsepower isn’t bmw horsepower.
@@Bimmer_Bill I really like the Corvette on paper, and if I ever move to The Villages in Florida…I might move there with with Rogaine and Viagra prescriptions.
As with all new bmw cars, everything is amazing until you see the front. The tech, the driving, even the colors. If you buy one, promise yourself never to look at pictures of a Z8. A car from over 20 years ago.
My first new car was a ‘99 BMW M Roadster. Drove the piss out of it and loved it. My recent new car is a ‘24 992.1 GTS with manual and love it. Manuals make the difference 🏁
I own two manuals, and have long bought them, but can't financially keep up on the save the manuals game. I recently bought my first motorcycle, a manual.
I bought a manual WRX limited back in 2022 to support the movement and I’m dying internally to get a manual Golf R just as a farewell for their manual versions being discontinued 😞
People that are on the assembly line are stating… The Golf R will only be discontinued as a manual for North america. It will still be available throughout most of Europe as a manual for a while longer. Golf R manual will likely have its last year in america for the 2025 model year. For (most of) Europe it will be 2029. If someone happens to want a manual in america, best get a down payment or purchase on one soon, as they likely will not last in that market long - the prices will also go up as time transpires. If one happens to know someone stationed in Europe for the american military - one could still have a manual shipped back here, and for not as much as one might think
One thing that I've noticed in the configurator is you cannot replace the piano black with either the aluminum mesh or aluminum tetragon AND still spec the manual transmission. A small thing perhaps but if you're keeping the car for the long run that piano black trim will look terrible in short order.
Sadly you are correct on both counts --stuck with black and the metal would look better imo. Another thing you can't get with manual is adaptive cruise.
For the life of me, I do not understand why they are forcing the black trim both inside and outside the car. This is more of a 'mature' sports car, hence a satin finish chrome on the outside with even a satin wood on the inside would do sooo much for this package.
A solution for the piano black trim....have it covered in xPel PPF. Did that for the interior of our '23 x3 M40i and other than showing dust; is scratch free and well worth it. xPel has templates for the z4 8AT...are coming soon for the MT according to my PPF installer.
Something else too !!! Buttons, no entire screen left to right ! Dials, classic dash !!! Omgggg, it's a car !! It's not a freaking ipad with a circle.....we, as a species, are very smart, rrrrright ? 😢
Another great episode! I don't miss dailying a manual but that's as much to do with the fact that they were all economy cars as it has to do with the leg workout. Sadly I won't be saving the manuals with a new car purchase but do intend on having a fun manual second car someday.
Great great vid! Love seeing you super legit happy on a test drive. BMW once again has to be saluted for making so many great cars in this day/age. Also love love love the old UX with its knobs & switches with tactile feel. The rub for me: An M2 is cheaper. I would be hard pressed as a guy that can only afford 1 nice sports car in the stable at a time, to not get into a M2 vs this with price factored in.
@@Love2Cruise Not really, but then again I like the type of UX in the Z4 much more than the most current one. But then the M2 is cheaper..... argh! 1st-world problems & all that. LoL
@@loseerich493 There you go. Another consideration: Are you planning on doing track days? If you are, get the M2. I had an S2000 for 17 years and getting a convertible to be track ready is way more involved (i.e. rollbar) than a car with a real roof. If you are not planning on doing track days, than any convertible is more fun than the fastest car in the world.
@@Love2Cruise Great input/thanks. No track days with my own stuff. Whenever I do them it's like at one of the BMW Performance Centers or whatnot... with their stuff.
This is ABSOLUTELY the perfect color combo for this car! I’m excited that this color comes in the regular clear coat shiny version. All the reviews have the ugly Matte version. I have a GR Supra and a ND2 Miata…..Now if I sell them both….Hmm 🤔
I have it on order. Almost ordered the red leather seats, but I thought the cognac tan went better with the gold that comes out of the green paint in the sunshine
Got myself a 98 Z3 with 2.8L manual about 6 months ago, only has a bit over 45,000 miles now. Also got it in Boston Green with the Tan top and interior, beautiful aesthetics. Great car, lots of fun to drive!!
Is Tremec manual transmission better ? (as in Mustang or Blackwing). I heard the transmission oil is actually cooled in the Mustang for optimal and unchanging shifting feel regardless of heat.
Love the Z4 and I'm so happy they've reintroduced the manual transmission in this latest version. I owned a 2003 2.5 years ago before switching to the Porsche mid-engine platform (a base Cayman, then 718 GTS 2.5), and have always kept the Z4 in consideration for switching back, despite my love for all things Porsche. That said, your comments comparing the new Z4 to the Porsche 718 GTS 4.0 (6 cyl) to the Porsche 718 4-cylinder could use some additional nuance. That's because Porsche did produce a 4-cylinder 2.5 liter GTS that's actually quicker than the 4.0 6 cylinder. If the 4.0 "trounces" the Z4, then surely the quicker 2.5 does as well. The sound issue is completely overrated, and a low mileage GTS 2.5 can be had for about 30% cheaper than the GTS, and about 10K less than the Z4, with better performance and Porsche character. I wouldn't have mentioned it in this otherwise stellar review, but you opened the door. 🙂
I am very excited about this, if it is good I seriously might buy one. It has the iDrive 7 setup too, which is SO much better than the new iDrive 8. Would cross shop this with the far more expensive 911.
The Hard top Miata is now $40,000 optioned out. I got this Z4 fully loaded with every package imaginable for $74,700 It also has twice the HP as the Miata. When you consider a corvette convertible or Porsche boxster S optioned out is $100,000 this car is a bargain
Absolutely love your videos. Entertaining, informative, everything. You raise a really interesting point here. I have the auto M40i and I love it. But switched from manual to auto several years ago. I live in London and the clutch got harder as cars got larger / heavier. I would not go back so long as I live in a built up area with slow moving traffic; just too hard. So that’s a factor. But love your suggestion / challenge. Question is the future - electric, hydrogen even - does this apply?? I don’t know. But I do know I love your videos. So please keep them coming. 👍😊🙏
Heyyyyy! No way! Guess what I just bought three weeks ago? A 1998 Z3 2.8 with a manual! Needs a little work to be prime but it's got the Montrealblau paint and a fresh, professionally installed convertible top
Even though the Z3 has the best feeling bmw shifter I've felt that isn't the aftermarket UUC ultimate Evo shifter, I'd love a Toyota shifter feel in my z3. I have a manual Lexus is300 and it is such a great shift feel imo. My friend has a 95 4runner and I love shifting that beast too
I was in the market for a fun, fast, manual transmission daily that was also practical. I landed on an Integra TypeS. It's unfortunate that manuals are commanding a premium these days, with affordable manuals effectively limited to MX-5/GT86/BRZ/WRX/Civic Si. I get it though, we are a specialty market now. And specialty means low volume, which means expensive.
Funny thing like a movie blooper at 4:15 which is totally on BMW -- the image of the car on the instrument panel shows the front grill with silver trim, which is not available on the real car -- black trim only!

@@joshuathompson8474 Maybe stoplight to stoplight, but not on a race track .. the Z4 M Roadster would have full advantage of its lighter weight and the S54's high RPM power range, and would murder the 2025 Z4 manual in the corners.
Drove brand new less than 100 miles, Z40i manual. Back roads in Indiana, curves but not fantastic. Beautiful seats, fit my old ass and back better than anything I have found in my 81 years.Better exceration than my 370Z, Made my MB SLK 300 feel like a chevie. Great car, not bad price for the tech and confort. Handles great, shifts great (370z & SLK both manual)

If I remember correctly it doesn't offer ventilated seats--almost a must here in Arizona, where the summer highs reach 115°F/46°C.
Great video and review.. just picked mine up a couple weeks ago. #SaveTheManuals
You're spot on about the top color. It needs to match the seats. My Jaguar F-Type (with manual transmission) is British Racing Green with a tan top. I know I'm biased, but I think that it looks great.
Goddamn that spec must look fkn awesome!
I have a Miata 2024 ND3 white pearl with the tan top so not even close but fam, your car is my dream car!
ordered a z4 manual in May, *patiently* waiting for it to be delivered. Your peelout at 4:30s made me even more excited to get this. Wonderful wonderful review
Motor, very good review of an amazing, overlooked car (next to the Vector). You cover everything important and, TG, don't bother with more digital interior criticism. Having had multiple Porsches, I'd put the B58 up against any Porsche motor. There is no better all-around engine on the market (counting the S engines). I'll say this to you again: F*** the TH-cam haters. You're a watchable, thorough reviewer.
My pleasure!
So is this a 6 cyl turbo? single turbo, twin scroll?
I just ordered one in this exact spec! One correction: the paint seen here is San Remo Green Metallic, which is FREE but exclusive to the Handschalter. The $3k paint option is the matte/frozen green option. Great video as always. #savethemanuals
Good to know and hear it's not a 3k option.
2003 Z4 2.5 tad under 100k, still puts a smile on your face sound and acceleration
Norway here. Sorry for my poor grammar.
Very nice video.
The green is gorgeous!
YES; hurry up... soon it's too late to get one. Belive mai 2026 is STOP I had to wait 8 months. A Dude in East Europe, 7 months
😄I ordered a blue Z4 M40i automatic with cognac interior in May. Delivery December ... I hope
Reason for not manuel?
Only three cars are reserved for the whole of Northern Europe market each quarter.
Don't at least 60 millions live here?
Only 3 cars......for so many people.
The waiting is killing me
Rented a ‘24 z4 auto when I was in Texas. Great car. Super fun to drive. I own 4 other BMW’s. So I know the brand. This car was a blast to drive! 🎉
Just took my Z4 MT home this week. A correction on the review, the color of this car in the video is the San Remo Green 11:11 no charge color included in the $3500 package max MSRP is $74,900, the Frozen deep green is a matte color for $2900 additional max MSRP $77,800.
Somewhat misled you guys in this one: The monroney supplied showed the Frozen Deep Green Metallic option - which is US$2,950 however the color on this car was actually the 'free color', San Remo Green. Congrats . . .
How are you liking the car?
@@laloloco14 only driven 65 miles so far love it, in storage for the next week. Still driving my old 2009 e88 128 MT, update in a few weeks I'll start driving the Z daily.
You're an absolute pro presenter -- thanks for the details on the handshaker. At $77k I'll stick (pun intended) with my $33k otd limited BRZ. Cheers! 🤙
I wish they made a targa or hard pop top version of it. Still, I'd pick this over the Supra any day...
So glad they made this. It really needed to be available this way. The manual gods are smiling down on us.
I've just taken delivery of a new M40i Handschalter. Just wanted to say how excellent your presentations are, full of enthusiasm, driving experience and market conditions. Anyway, can't stay - sun is out in the UK, first time since I took delivery on Tuesday!!
Congratulations . . . well done!
There is always a market for “Different “. What I tell my wife when she is upset with me. “If everything was the same,,Boring!!!
People need to buy with their heart , instead of their wallet..! Not a practical model but keep the driver engaged. That passion for the brand carries on with other “Brand” purchases. Race on Sunday and sell on Monday!!
Agreed on the heart!
I modestly ride a 2014 car with a manual transmission, do not drive and get maximum driving pleasure. I even wrote a song. "How proud you are of fate if you drive any Z-4. So he became taller, well, he stopped crying, on the Z - 4.
What an amazing review, thank you! I just discovered you on TH-cam. It’s informative, funny, and sarcastic. Looking forward to catching up with your videos. 😎
I want one of these used in a few years. Last of a dying breed.
I don't see them depreciating like other BMWs.
I hear you, I bought an M6 ZL1 last year…love it. My first new car was a ‘00 Z28 M6.
Fun review. Almost picked up a Z4 M40i last summer, held off, just didn't feel right at the last second...was going to wait...life intervened as it often does, ended up with 2023 Miata GT and really love it...but its not THIS car, looks great, really happy they made it1
Welcome back and happy anniversary, M!
Thank you for remembering, Amro . . . and for being on the journey!
I'm the guy tried to buy a $55,000 base Vette, not so long ago. Can't do $80k for a car, sadly, so old & broken or Miata are the only answers....
I was just about to make the same comment. His mistake is at 11:50. I looked and looked, and I'm like, that paint is shiny, not flat! I'm totally into this review b/c my car is on order in the exact same color scheme 🙂
Somewhat misled you guys in this one: The monroney supplied showed the Frozen Deep Green Metallic option - which is US$2,950 however the color on this car was actually the 'free color', San Remo Green.
@@GFCicottesame here! I ordered mine with the more extended Cognac interior (without the “special’ stitching). Mine was just dispatched from the factory today!
@@AlToonaSandwich Awesome! I liked the tan seats with black doors and center console armrest -- to each his own. My production dates are September 6-9 if I recall correctly -- I suspect it will actually get here between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Only problem is I live in the north where the summer tires it will come on shouldn't be driven in the cold. May not get much road time until March or April :(
I still drive my 2003 3.0 Z4 with a manual. I am fine. 😁
Had a 1987 M Roadster that was pure bliss: Arrest-me-red with black and red interior. It was a 6-cylinder rocket ship - and just about every day I regret selling it.
‘89
No it wasn't Toyota who said lets put a 6MT with the B58. The F22 and F30 m240i and m340i were both available with a manual B58
Question MotoMan, Z4 manual or used LC500 vert? I'm curious which you'd prefer since you own the latter, thanks! (ps I can't decide bc both are great)
Just sold my Z3M
Roadster owned for 20 years. Heavy clutch did my left knee & hip in. So now own R231 SL500. But I've not ruled out a manual if new Z4 clutch lighter perhaps. Meantime I'm really delighted with my SL
A video after my own heart.
Fantastic vehicle, end of an era. Great review. Problem is that it’s priced in C8 territory but it’s your money buy what you want while you can.
Or buy both!
Yes, but a lot of people don’t want to be seen driving a Corvette.
@@NomenClature-o8s you mean not everyone is a middle aged white man with white socks, white new balance shoes, and aviator sunglasses? 😝
I have 2006 Mini Cooper S w/ manual. It's not fast but it's so fun driving it!
If I can afford it, this will be my next car. Save the manuals!!
My first new car was a ‘99 BMW M Roadster. Drove the piss out of it and loved it. My recent new car is a ‘24 992.1 GTS with manual and love it. Manuals make the difference 🏁
The car that followed the 1997 Z3 2.8 was . . . a 1998 Z3 M Roadster. Loved it. Didn't lose a dime on either.
@@MotoManTV Meant to type 992.1 for my GTS Coupe. Enjoyed your video on the Z4. Well done.
Those seats look a bit bendy to me, we’ve just had our Z4 for two weeks and loving it 🥰
I own two manuals, and have long bought them, but can't financially keep up on the save the manuals game. I recently bought my first motorcycle, a manual.
I bought a manual WRX limited back in 2022 to support the movement and I’m dying internally to get a manual Golf R just as a farewell for their manual versions being discontinued 😞
Do it.
People that are on the assembly line are stating…
The Golf R will only be discontinued as a manual for North america.
Best new BMW for sale right now IMHO
That's a beautiful car!👍
I might have to get one for sure. Looks better than them all. M2-3-4.
As an owner of an E85 3.0i Z4 in 6-speed manual… it brings a tear to my eye to see BMW still offering a manual in a Z4 21 years later 🥲
Me too:)
@@MotoManTV Totally agree. A walnut finish would be amazing but that'll never happen again.
A solution for the piano black trim....have it covered in xPel PPF. Did that for the interior of our '23 x3 M40i and other than showing dust; is scratch free and well worth it. xPel has templates for the z4 8AT...are coming soon for the MT according to my PPF installer.
I have to subscribe just based on the thorough breakdown
Something else too !!! Buttons, no entire screen left to right ! Dials, classic dash !!! Omgggg, it's a car !! It's not a freaking ipad with a circle.....we, as a species, are very smart, rrrrright ? 😢
Where is the M40 convert with the manual?
With a car like this what more performance would someone actually want?
How was the gear ratios? are they tall?
Another great episode! I don't miss dailying a manual but that's as much to do with the fact that they were all economy cars as it has to do with the leg workout. Sadly I won't be saving the manuals with a new car purchase but do intend on having a fun manual second car someday.
That’s the car I wanted but I ended up getting a Shelby GT 350 . Yes it has a six speed manual transmission and it sounds amazing.
It’s easy. Do you want a convertible or not?
@@Love2Cruise Not really, but then again I like the type of UX in the Z4 much more than the most current one. But then the M2 is cheaper..... argh! 1st-world problems & all that. LoL
This manual is better than the one in the M2, if that matters...
@@GFCicotteCongrats! Im jealous. I’m offering to break it in for you. 😀
I love that color green with the BLACK top.😊
Got myself a 98 Z3 with 2.8L manual about 6 months ago, only has a bit over 45,000 miles now. Also got it in Boston Green with the Tan top and interior, beautiful aesthetics. Great car, lots of fun to drive!!
Great car and a fantastic color combo!
When are BMW going to bring back round gauges on the instrument panel???
thx for the explanation as to why all thee beautiful 2 door coupes are going away.
That green seems to be the regular green not the "frozen" green. Which green is it?
The green in this video is san remo green metallic, its not frozen.
Hey MotoMan, I need your help: Considering Certified 991.2 Cab manual, New 2025 Z4 Manual, or Certified LC 500 cab. Can’t decide, what’s your pick?
You're killing me and you know why! For rarity, I would go LC or Z4. For pure driving, the 911. All depends on how you are going to use it.
I am very excited about this, if it is good I seriously might buy one. It has the iDrive 7 setup too, which is SO much better than the new iDrive 8. Would cross shop this with the far more expensive 911.
Yes to iDrive 7 for sure!
I’ll keep Miata for $35k before I spend $80k on the Z4 Manual. It’s priced out of my league. So you get off your ass and buy one and enjoy the ride!😊
The Hard top Miata is now $40,000 optioned out.
I got this Z4 fully loaded with every package imaginable for $74,700
It also has twice the HP as the Miata.
When you consider a corvette convertible or Porsche boxster S optioned out is $100,000 this car is a bargain
I drove a 2003 z4 manual for almost 20 years.
Waiting for these to show up CPO ;)
I don't see them being cheap.
Why is that shift leaver moving that much? (5:15)
Did BMW ditch the clutch delay valve?
Heyyyyy!
My friend has a 95 4runner and I love shifting that beast too
Congrats and yes, I'm jealous!
I was really close to getting one of these but opted to go with a Lotus Emira instead
Yessis, that thing sounded like a Gusheshe (E30 325is) at the start there.
Keen eye . ..
