On yhe inside you will be greeted by a retro cloth interior. Under yhe hood is a 2.4L turbocharged inline-4 paired with an electric motor & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Is the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 less risky to BUY than a Land Rover Defender?

I’m not a car guy, and I’m not shopping for a car, but I can’t stop checking out your videos, Joe.
Because of him I become a car guy.
The main reason I would get this one is because my mother was born in 1958. She passed when I was 18. This is very special to me. Mom tribute vehicle 😊
That’s a very good reason to be honest. Also, sorry for your loss
You sound like a good son/daughter, and I’m sure she was a good mother. Stay happy friend
@AA-vr8ez best son ever. Be well friend 🙂
@@Mr_Nobody-0-J thank you😊
That’s really stupid.
100% less riskier than a Defender. Far better resale, and reliability. Only better with a GX550. The new LC is an excellent vehicle. Love it ..
Resale? Probably. Nobody knows about reliability at this point
@@mcnuggetappleThat is somewhat true, however, having owned Land Rover products, I’m speaking from my own experience. Toyota has had some bad price recently regarding engines, so rest assured they know they don’t have room for error. That’s the reason for my comment.
@@mcnuggetappleI’ll take the risk that any Toyota product is more reliable than any Land Rover product.
I own a 1958. I hate the plastics and high price but its fun to drive. Im impressed with iforce max. I hated idea of 4 banger turbo but now im a convert
I was really considering it... like would have bought it on the spot... But the plastics and no lumbar adjustment ruined it for me....
I think The 1997 Honda Civic EX coupe that I owned had a nicer interior....
I chose it due to the incredible warranty (unlimited powertrain, 8/10 year on hybrid motor and battery)
@@jcw5007 That's what gets me. This has a very similar cabin feel to my dying 2013 Ford Focus. That thing was $14K brand new. I get that there is a lot more going for this vehicle but the moment to moment experience feels like, adjusted for inflation, you're in a $19K car. That just hurts.
Ridiculous, unrealistic comparison. The Focus was last sold in 2018 and started at $18k and there's been inflation then. It's also a car not an SUV and is a hell of a lot smaller.
If you want to at least make a comparison, compare it to an SUV like the Explorer. Both are similar in size, though the Land Cruisers used to be full sized it is probably more mid sized now like the Explorer or Bronco. The Explorer base MSRP is $16k cheaper than the base Land Cruiser and the Bronco starts around $14.5k cheaper.
I have the 4T in the GH its great; has way more pep than a V6. the 4T has plenty of power they should have made a landcruiser with the 4T $50,000 K
$60k for cloth seats, hard plastic everywhere, manual seats, no sunroof, meh. This thing is priced at least $10k too high. I like the exterior design but I spend all of my time inside the car.
Trust me I feel your frustration!
Americans whining about a car costing $60k. Can't even get a base model Hilux for $60k in Australia
Agree 1000%, this exactly what I felt when I sat in one of them. Plastic is soooo 🤮🤮🤮🤮 cheap. Maybe the quality is good, but interior is like cheap old car, doesn’t come even close to Defender!
@@darrenprior6339 $60,000 Australian dollar or USD?
This is a 50k truck at best. 60k should be the LC premium.
60k for something that should cost 40k MAX
Great mix of retro and contemporary styling!
Absolutely Joe. My Dad had a Land Rover Freelander back in 06. Broke down after warranty and he now drives A Suzuki Grand Vitara. He still has it. I know to never trust Land Rover. They do make sexy cars tho. My mom had a 99 Land Cruiser. I miss that Car.
60k for cloth seat and cheap plastic console I would rather buy a Corolla
For real... I'm used to stupid prices, but this is peak corporate greed.
Yeah, but a Corolla. That will be great off road. 🙄
@@NomenClature-o8sPathfinder rock creek can be had for 40k or under offers 90% of what the LC does except it's a NA v6 that gets better mpg than this 4 cyl hybrid.
@@PQ28120 The Pathfinder is a unibody vehicle. If I have to explain why body on frame is better for off-roading then it doesn’t matter much anyway.
The Pathfinder remains a car-based, unibody SUV with relatively tame ground clearance-7.7 inches including the suspension lift. The Land Cruiser has 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Enjoy the car based Nissan.
@@NomenClature-o8s oh LC is undoubtedly better at actually offloading but we both know these things are gonna be used more by suburban moms than they ever will be truly offroaded.
I absolutely love everything about the new land cruiser, except it's price. 60k really seems steep for a mostly plastic truck based SUV.
At 60k you would expect some comfort on those door panels. I could not imagine paying that much for the same uncomfortable elbow rest I'd get out of a 20k Hyundai.
Made in Japan is worth at least $5K to the sticker price
Glad you got this Land Cruiser 1958 edition to review bro that's body on frame as opposed to unibody construction
The underside of the new LC is nearly identical to the 5th gen 4runner.
I would just stick with the 4Runner. I like the idea and design of these IForce-Max setups. I really hope they hold up over the years like the older generations.
I work for Toyota and I’m tellin you that they WONT! I drive these all day and I see a engine and transmission recall coming with these. I would 1000% get the last generation 4Runner before they come out with the new one that will have problems like this new Land Cruiser has.
Love the 1958 LC
Best SUV on the market
Even though this 1958 Edition isn't cheap, it does give you the option of not many bells and whistles and a cloth interior. A friend of mine just bought this same trim in the same color and he plans on accessorizing heavily. And there will be a load of aftermarket toys to put on this thing.
A big benefit imo
More like the Bland Cruiser
For the price it should have been better appointed.
So they’re charging the price solely because of the name badging pretty much.
That’s CRAZY lol
60k for a 4 cylinder with cloth seats and a tiny ass screen? Toyota seriously should be embarrassed
Have you drove it?
How much did you think it would cost 35k ?😂😂...
@@jermainec2462 It's not a $60K car, which was OP's point.
@@hellomoto1 well shit, whatever price y'all want it to be , that ain't it lol
@@hellomoto1it’s worth 10k for his broke ass obviously
Thanks Joe for this thorough review. Some owners are not happy with this purchase from what I saw.
10:45 Joe, I love you but this is not next generation of LC200 series. This is Toyota Prado (lower version of Lexus GX) in Asia, Africa, and Middle East markets. In middle East they offering this car with 2.4 Turbo (non hybrid) and 2.8 Diesel engines.
The Prado is still a Land Cruiser. Matter fact it’s literally called the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado overseas
almost 60k for a cloth seats with sea of plastic, Toyota fan base really strong.
It is kind of crazy for Sure Bryan!
Nah, not for this fan here. WAY TOO SMALL of a vehicle for this price. Couldn’t believe how small it is compared to my runner. People are smoking some serious stuff to pay that money for that little toaster on wheels.😂
Reminds me of the Trooper from the 80's, especially the round headlights.
59k too expensive especially for the .base trim
They tossed out the V8 and put in it's place a turbo 4-cylinder? Absolutely nuts.
V8’s aren’t coming back. Ironically this engine has a lot more torque than the outgoing V8.
@@NomenClature-o8s But it won't last anywhere near as long. These turbo engines that Toyota keeps pushing out, especially in work vehicles, have had big problems over the last few years.
this is the Prado, not the 300 series, it was never a V8.
Sun up, Sun down, weekend or week day, joe has us!
Viva the Toyota Land Cruiser!
Utterly true 4 decades of ownership experience w/ different models yaer w/ LCs as a testimony
I’ll keep my 2022 4Runner Limited.
Toyotas have gotten so expensive that it almost seems like a bargain at 59k, but it really isn't. Everything about this Land Cruiser says I'm ready to go off-road, but those tires will really hold you back. An off-road vehicle just isn't complete without a front facing camera.
this vehicle won’t see any off-road trails for at least the first 10 yrs of its life haha. let’s be honest here
100% agree. Especially on other side of the world. Dont get me wrong. I like toyota and would really want to own an lc prado/250 someday but man. the price is not giving
those tires are take-offs by design, to get the best fuel economy rating. Replace'em with two-sizes-bigger AT's and you're good to go but 2mpg lower. Sad but true, this is the result of government meddling in not-so-free markets.
It is about 200 lbs lighter than the outgoing model. The 2.4litre turbo is having rod bearing issues. I would have gone with something based on Toyota's own 4 Litre V8 from GS400 (300/310) from 1998, but updated. The only interior colour is rhinoceros. The interior lighting is as bad as ever. When the exterior design was first shown in renderings, I thought they were kidding. I guess copying the Range Rover was a no-no.
Yes should definitely have forward facing camera, the exterior is nice and boxy, don’t mind the cloth seats but way too much hard plastic
59k 4cyl. Ridiculous. For that kind of money it should have a turbo V6.
People in the comments complaining about the price, as if the previous gen Land Cruiser wasn’t approaching $100,000. Not to mention the base model Land Rover Defender 110 starts higher than the 1958 trim Land Cruiser. It’s less expensive and way more efficient than its predecessor and that models competition
Twice what I paid for my 2002 Xterra and no less plastic.
This is crazy I don't know how they managed to put all that in there at that price point. That really is a good deal!
12:43 Some Journey is a great example of 80’s music! I like either “Who’s Crying Now” or “Separate Ways”
You have great taste
Of course you still have a spare tire!
It's a Toyota land cruiser!
Wowwww I love it. That interior is perfect. At that price, it's a good alternative to a Wrangler or Bronco if someone wants something more unique and doesn't do serious offroading, since base model 4door wrangler prices have crept up to 50k anyways. Very nice.
This is the best vehicle possibly ever made
You’re cracking me up with the Destro reference.
The 1958 Edition of this Toyota is a cool tribute! Great video
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
@@RaitisRides You’re welcome!

I’ve been seeing the new Land Cruisers around town and I have to say Toyota nailed the size and it’s well proportioned, too. Great review as always, Joe.
Thanks for letting me share it with you Nathan
Land Cruiser Prado 2024 and Ford Range 2024 are only vehicles available globaly in RHD and LHD depends on market
Joe remember the other GI joes..Beach Head , Storm Shadow, the sailor dude w/ his parrot. Those were the days!
Shipwreck
YO Joe!!! I wanted that aircraft carrier too...I also want this Land Cruiser!
Joeyyyyyy, get TF out of my head!!! I’m literally cross shopping the LC and the Defender (and the Bronco…whaaaaat?????) 😂 Love ya man ❤️
You know Joe I believe this suv is something nice it’s part of Land Cruiser family but we have to keep in mind this suv is a Land Cruiser PRADO specially because the Land Cruiser still being produced in others countries (including V8 engine).
But definitely I wish one like this . I’m Toyota/lexus fan .
The first I would do when I have the LC250, is to change the tires to beefy A/Ts.
Well, also if I’m gonna say some constructive criticisms for Toyota, I have about it that prevent me from trading in my wrangler for a Land Cruiser. First thing is Toyota needs to allow the the Land Cruiser to take regular 87 Octane instead of requiring 91 Octane which I am still not sure why this is required since the new Tacoma has the same engine and takes regular 87 Octane which I am used to my wrangler taking 87 and don’t want to have to pay more for fuel. Also, I like the 1958 but I’d probably get the mid trim Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser trim which Toyota really needs to rename but they have a premium package that gives you a few different things like nicer, leather seats, and the better Soundsystem I just hate that they make you have the cool box center consul If you want that package, I wish the cool box was a separate option like it is in the GX 550. Since I use the center consul to store things and I don’t really want it to be a refrigerator and waste the space. But last it would be nice if Toyota offered a more variety of exterior colors, off-road tires, and either lift kits installed at the dealer or you can get them straight from the factory like they do for the tundra
For the money you need a font camera and better tires for off road, more aggressive tread.🤔🤓
Joe, you forgot the back window does open! I’d never buy a new power train, even Toyota. I’ll keep driving the Pathfinder.
Yeah I'm still more of a Defender fan, I had a 02 Freelander a few years ago and I'm stuck. Unfortunately I hydroplaned and totaled it like probably a year after, but it was a great car. I still want another one too. It's hard to get away from the Grand Cherokees, but yeah Land Rover has me hooked.😕🙂🤓🤠😎😏👍✌️👋👏💪🌾🌿🍀🍃🇺🇸
Love the commentary about the GI Joe.. Hilarious!!!!!!
Land Rovers can break down between home and the grocery store, but are also the only vehicle that can get you into or out of a lot of off-road situations. So reliability is often trumped by ability when it comes to these vehicles.
We have a famous saying in Africa...if you want to have a smooth ride through the bush and be gentle on your "derrière," go with the Land Rover. If you want to make it to your final destination, go with a Landcruiser.
The V8 is gone and in its place is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a hybrid system. I'm not paying for that.
Okay .... 🤷🏽♂️
Then don't 😢
It's ok. But not with that 4 banger and turbo😊
You are not the first to say that Dave
That's a hot one. Reliable too.
Great presentation as always! But as you were "pointing to the beach", demonstrating the tailgate window feature somehow got missed. Sorry, but that's a zonk on your review.😄 To me, this new LC is the FJC reincarnated, with far less quirkiness. The vintage twill fabric seats is pretty daring in 2024, but I love the idea.
The higher grades must have better materials? The current LC Prado (which is ancient) is built like a tank with very high quality materials
It's a great car if you really like driving off road, otherwise it's too expensive for regular road usage. You can't really even compare technology with my 2024 Kia Sportage EX for less then half price and double warranty.
I wish you guys in the US got a taste of the Land Cruiser Prado with legendary 2.8l turbo-diesel.
Trust me so do I
I drove one while working in Riga, Latvia…it was great!
@@RaitisRides Similar (base) model with this engine where I live costs 47 480$ after tax and everything, you guys have insane dealer markup prices unfortunately.
$60k for an entry level plastic 4 cylinder, with on road tires seems like a lot, but everything is expensive now. It’s a nice retro inspired look. Joe, if you were spending $60k for an off-road midsize suv, which would you choose. Considering resale value as well. I enjoy the videos!
This seems like a great Baja surf or Sierras fishing vehicle. Wondering if rear seat folds flat for car camping. 😊 Also, a real time towing demo would be great - with something like an Airstream Bambi.
From Italy to Japan, your adding a few stamps to your passport today 💪
I love to bring it all to you! I appreciate you tuning in!
this is sold as Prado in SE Asia and they ruined it by removing the diesel engine
I never had the aircraft carrier, my friend Daniel did. I did have the oil platform thing.
By the title, I was expecting more of a detailed comparison between the LC and Defender.
It's like a 4Runner probably. Big boxy body on frame thing. Not great in the corners, but it will probably last 20 years
Yeah that Bronco Wildtrak is nice, Sasquatch is the one. They really needed to put a V8 in one of those trucks too.😕🙂🤓🤠😎😏👍✌️👋👏💪🌾🌿🍀🍃🇺🇸
Dope vid as usual, but where’s the review of the ‘25 civic Si?
Just don't see the purpose in buying a new overpriced vehicle. Even Toyota nowadays are overpriced. Why get this when cars from 10-20 years ago can do what you NEED it to do for 1/3 the price?
Joe and Lori and Steve keep up the good work real true and I love the video 👍
4 cylinder, what a joke
This generation will ensure high resale values of previous generation LC's.
I think you may be right!
Should have lumber support in seats, toyota should’ve give modern touch to old classic.
Missing out on the GI Joe Airlcraft carrier still burns Rati!
Like a $60k bronco sport lol
The new Landcruiser is absolutely stunning and an outstanding driver. The 1958 is too bare bones. However, the Landcruiser Premium is very, very sharp. It crawls up around $71k - $72k.
The First Edition gets close to $80k. Great products built at the Tahara plant in Japan. Outstanding, quick engines with great tow capacity.
Excellent points for sure!
I heard there might be a new FJ on the way. That'll be something to look forward to.
0-60 in 8 seconds is lacking. I have a Chevy Silverado with the 2.7 turbo that does it in 7 seconds, and my wife’s Armada smokes it. The Chevy engine does ok in traffic and goes well, but I’m looking for an overlanding vehicle with some power. A supercharged I-6 or twin turbo v6 would be great here.
I wish Toyota would offer maybe like a package to give you more soft touch on the interior and just a nicer interior overall on the 1958, though the cloth seats are not bad but for maybe like $1000-$2000 because it needs it for for paying over $60,000 since I’ve sat and one the only thing that felt nice was a steering wheel. Everything else felt like something on a base work truck Tacoma on the 1958.
That would be nice 👍🏻 for they did that
One day when the paint has faded a bit and the cloth seats are stained with taco sauce and the engine is in bits on the dealership floor
One will look in the rear view mirror of the rental Elantra and think why did I fall for it why did I spend 60k on this thing
Then one remembers Joe saying how good one would look eating a taco in that thing
Looks really good, but pass on the hybrid.
Would you rather it had a v6?
@@RaitisRides Absolutely. If they make hybrids more power to them. Just don’t force it on us as the only choice.
LC and Defender buyers will generally stick to their brand. I think this 250 has more to do with Toyota than anything else. Besides the argument of not competing with themselves, personally, I don’t understand this move by Toyota. They took away the true Land Cruiser to give us a “cheaper” medium weight Cruiser that, when spec’d out, is close to being the same price as the 200 series, which they ended and chose not to replace with the 300 series in the US. They stirred up confusion by calling this a 250 in the US but the Prado elsewhere. Toyota is having engine and transmission issues and the launch of the 4R was delayed. The 250, in my eyes, looks cheaply made and that front bumper, with its different front bumper pieces, looks like it needs A LOT of trimming to put a decent front bumper on it, including the front fender flare. Once Ineos gains more traction, which I think they will as soon as their dealer network grows, and if Nissan can rebadge the Armada as the Patrol, I think competition in the 4x4 SUV space will continue to tighten. My only gripe with the auto market right now is, make simpler trucks. I don’t want a car that breaks just because a battery goes flat. Make simpler, tougher vehicles that drivers can work on in their garage. Even dealerships don’t have enough trained mechanics to work on the computers these new vehicles are. They are becoming more of a risk to drive in remote places and we are giving up way too much of our privacy with all the technology gimmicks.
Blah blah blah... i need a nap after your babbling
No one wanted a 200 series, look at the sales, to big and bloated, with inflation the 200 series would easily be 105k, the loaded landcruiser edition is around 72k, this is 33k cheaper than the 200 series if it was here and no one wanted it, they’ve already sold in 2 months the last like 5 years of the 200 series. Sales speak volumes
So the rule for designing SUVs nowadays is 'use only a Ruler'
Nice ride, but also looking forward to the all-new 2025 4Runner SR5-- might be the better deal at 43k🎉
Can you upgrade the 1958 to the larger infotainment screen?
Would you guys recommend changing the oil every 3,500 - 4,000 miles on this 4Cyl Turbo engine?
The Prado sells for 34k in other countries... but starts 58 here ..lol total nonsense ... Didn't realize plastic cost so much
i like the modern headlights better
Everyone has their favorites
The land cruiser needs a 50 cal machine gun mount option, lol
Pacific fleet edition
Looks sharp. But that's a lot of HP out of a 2.5L. Durability issues? Price is kinda brutal. I had a nose bleed when you said, $59,675. That's Lexus territory. For $10k more, a Lexus 2024 TX 500h F-Sport Performance seems more appealing value and appearance-wise.
That's a nice Redo of a 58 Landcruiser, but motor is too little Too late for a refresh 58
For that amount of money.. it’s a plastic car..
Raiti's I m waiting for 2025 nissan rogue BASE MODEL 😭
The cloth seats is a real problem
I like this SUV, but is it just Me because it looks like the front right tire in the beginning of this video is flat ?
Ok the neighbor with the GI Joe aircraft carrier was a spoiled prick. YOU HAD A CORVETTE AT 17!!!! None of us got the Lionel Train layout or the Lego Death Star. Until I got my Mustang at 22 I had the choice of GMC pickup or an ugly green slant six volare that could not be killed. Actually my wife is all aboot the robins egg blue bronco heritage but this might be way more reliable. Good job sir .
