I would have done the opposite (NOT both): - Free registration, no annual fee - 10% commission on contracts Drone owners would have had no reason to _not_ register as they have nothing to lose. No work? No fee. Even a single job? Great, 10% fee, big deal. He would have at least as many registered users by now, if not more, but with the overall commissions amounting to much more than $180 per person per year. Isn't that what most companies do? Give huge discounts and opportunities at the beginning (first 3 months free, etc), grow user base, prove to them that they get value out of the service, and then implement a moderate fee.
I totally agree. That's exactly what I was thinking. The initial fee is going to alienate a lot of potential members. He'd be much better off charging a small commission, and giving a free trial to draw new users in. As you say, people will then have no reason not to sign up, increasing his database, and revenue, as a result. Plus, even if people do sign up and end up not using the service, a lot of people forget to cancel after their free trials, so he'd still be making some revenue, even from the people who aren't likely to be customers.
Or do both. 180 quid up front - no commissions, or take a commission on every job you get until you realise that you might as well give them 180 quid. There is a lot to be said for having all the cash up front rather than trying to generate it constantly.
Oh my gosh, this episode is legendary! Jenny not only made an offer, she fought for it, as well! I feel like I'm watching Dragon's Den from an alternate reality lol.
