    Great review with some points which have really helped me. Trying to get the shot before the light or subject changes is always something which plagues photographers and despite the slower fixing system of the Sandmarc lens the rear cover is an absolute MUST for me. I dont want to capture a shot hurriedly and then find it was ruined by pocket/camera bag dust. Plus the fact that I can use Sandmarc ND or polarising filters is essential. The less obvious flare is also better IMO. As the desired end result is footage quality it HAS to be Sandmarc. The viewer isnt interested in how easy it is to change a lens or keep it clean. They just rate the footage!

    Just bought the Sandmarc Anamorphic and seeing this makes me think they really need to update their mounting system to the twist-lock style. It just makes more sense! Of course, I think the softer lens flare is the way to go. The Moment version is just too harsh for most use-cases.

      The Moment gold flare anamorphic is a great alternative to the blue flare version.

      Atti Bear I like it more based on what you said as well. Sandmarc seems to be more natural. But I’m biased as Sandmarc also has an ND filter that fits all the lenses. I haven’t seen a moment Nd filter that works with its current lenses. Thanks again!

    I’m interested in the Desqueeze ratio - I can’t find any reference anywhere to Sandmarc having a different ratio than moment. If you’re correct then it’s like a 2.54:1 and not a 2.40:1 which is awfully unusual.
    I wonder if they changed the product or something, since their support material seems to indicate that it’s 2.40 and they recommend Filmic for desqueezing.

    Great review! Thanks for the insights. I'm still undecided on which one to purchase. I like that the Sandmarc has filter threads. I wonder if there would be a way to better secure the lens so that it's not easily knocked out of alignment?

    Still a great review, 3 years later (!), also prefer Sandmarc for ease of using filters and more muted flare. Q: (anyone...) all of these lenses seem to produce very noticeable softness and blur around the corners, any of them better than others at edge-to-edge sharpness, or does it just depend on the sensor, etc.??

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for the positiv feedback 😃. The Anamorphic Lenses in general produce quite the soft image in the corners. It's the same with bigger cinema anamorphic lens, however the softness is amplified by the small sensor on smartphones. Therefore my tip would be to make sure you are filming with the lowest possible ISO to minimize additional artefacts and noise

  • @JLawL
    @JLawL 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you're on Apple, sandmarc hands down. On Android, moment.
    Sandmarc's warranty is worth more than marginally better photo quality when zoomed in on minute details. Sandmarc's mounting system also won't fall out while you're hiking along trails. Ask me how I know Moment's will 🤬

  • @momentsbyron

  • @Ha1frican

    Has anyone actually tried using the Sandmarc lens with the moment app? I would much rather have that lens but have to use the moment app since filmic pro doesn’t work with my DJI Osmo Mobile 3 and I don’t want to have to desqueeze in post bc I don’t have the experience to know how it looks correctly without seeing it on the screen

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually tried it. You can also record in the moment app. In most instances people won’t be able to tell the difference unless you are recording symmetrical objects. But even then most people won’t care so you should be golden 😁.

    Awesome comparison of the two lenses! I went with the Sandmarc myself. Yes, I wish the case was a bit more robust and I find the screwing on of the lens a bit cumbersome at times. I am however very interested in the anamorphic lens filter/caps that you make! Looks like they give off nice flares! So how can I get a hold of them? Thanks!😃👍🏻

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly would go for Sandmarc. The way how their lens renders flares in my opinion is way better and pleasing. I heavily used their lens in my recent review of the Sandmarc Filters th-cam.com/video/BSsu4WSr6mk/w-d-xo.html and the Osmo Mobile 3 th-cam.com/video/K6SlP2brJtQ/w-d-xo.html maybe that footage will help you decide

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes there kinda is. The Sandmarc Lenses use different non standard aspect ratios. Therefore your Footage will still be a little bit squeezed but it's hard to spot. Most people won't notice it 😉

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Moment sells both filter thread and rear lens caps for their lenses. It bugs me that this extra purchase must be made, but it is misleading to suggest that the Moment gives you problems such as rear lens getting dirty in your pocket just because you choose not to buy the rear lens cap. I like the filter thread mount because the same mount works with all Moment lenses. I should also point out that Moment also sells a gold flare anamorphic lens, and while most people seem to prefer the strong blue flares, I actually prefer the gold flare for most shots.
    It is perfectly reasonable to make unfavorable comparisons based on the gear you are using, but it is not reasonable and misleading to fail to point out that Moment offers solutions to all of the problems you mention.
    I use Moment because of its ecosystem - various lenses, a much better mounting system, the Moment app, and the wide range of accessories they offer, including battery cases for those days when gathering a group of people to make a larger video project. I also like that they support older phones. I use the iPhone 8 plus, and because I prefer the home button and fingerprint reader, I will keep using this model for a few years to come. Moment gives me a choice of battery and photo cases for my older phone. I like that. And I love that gold flare anamorphic lens.

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is it so hard to look at the publish date of a video before you start accusing people of being bias?! When I released the video Moment had none of the accessories you just mentioned.
      The whole list if things you mentioned how ever proves that moment as an innovative company proves that they are listening to their customer base and that’s something a lot of companies don’t do. So kudos to Moment!

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Richard for this incredibly valuable feedback! You are the first viewer to confirm the unusual aspect ratio. I think the most obvious reason is ease of use. Often it's quite tedious to unsqueeze footage on your phone but if you don't edit on your phone it's quite easy to fix.

    I have the Moments anamorphic lens now since they released it plus you have to buy the back lens cover plus buy the flang to add filters that are all extra so Moment product gets real expansive to use. The new Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max thin case is so weak the lens moves all over the place so only buy the Moment filmmaker or photos case not the thin case. We pre-ordered the new cases for the Samsung Note 10 plus and the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max September and we have just revied them both in December. So we have moved all of our cell phone content over to the Beastgrip and Beast lens and yes they have a pro version anamorphic too so no matter what the phone manufacturers do with there cameras position we can use the BeastGrip anamorphic lens because the BeastGrip is adjustable to whatever phone you have. Beastgrip also has an adaptor for the DSL lens to your cell phone too that is way cool with a huge depth of field. Plus its fun to put a very large canon cinematic prime lens with a battery-powered remote focus motor.

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow thank you for this piece of information. I wasn't aware of BeastGrip. The situation with the cases in my opinion is the most annoying about every manufacturer. At least Sandmarc gives you the option to use their Clamp. All others don't have anything decent in that department. Thanks again I'll take a look at Beastgrip.

    nice video!!! a question - to de-squeeze the pic, the video shows him adjusting the height of the image to 70%. can we not achieve the same by adjusting the width to a value higher than 100 percent? or is there some specific reason why we adjust the height only and not the width?

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      By adjusting the width you'd sacrifice a lot of the field of view and therefore lose one of the two main characteristics of an anamorphic lens. This way you can have the "cinematic" two black bars and a really wide scene.

    Hello! I need some help figuring out whether I should buy an additional external lens to shoot real estate videos with my iphone 11 pro max. I have a dji 4 gimbal, rode wireless microphone for my short appearances in the video, and filmic pro app. I really like the flare added by the anamorphic lenses, I am considering whether I should buy the moment anamorphic lense blue flare. I dont like the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen though. Do you suggest I get any more gear as far as lenses go? Thanks for your help and for all the tips in your videos!

    • @AttiBear
      @AttiBear  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Elaine, sounds like you already have a great setup. If you are going for an artistic style in your videos anamorphic lenses can be a great tool, especially of their wide field of view. however they are only sharp in the center of the image. I'm not sure if that's something you want to have in real estate content. If you still want the look and feel of anamorphic, you can go ahead and crop away the black bars.

  • @SteveInSunnyCA
    @SteveInSunnyCA 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why go to the trouble and expense of using an anamorphic lens, which can twist and warp the image, when you could use a wide-angle adapter, and crop the top and bottom for the anamorphic aspect ratio? In either situation, you’re getting the full horizontal resolution of the camera, and software is throwing away the top and bottom to give you the wide/short aspect ratio.

    • @bankersbaux
      @bankersbaux 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      False

    • @JoeShapiro
      @JoeShapiro 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The twist and warp of an anamorphic lens actually feels good to viewers. That's why Hollywood still uses them. The frame has a subtle motion ripple through it that makes the footage feel more alive.
      Less important is that the anamorphic squeezes the image so it uses all of the sensor. The cropping happens in the desqueeze which is after the capture so there's more data in the capture.
      And then there's those cool flares - which you can fake in post but organic is always easier and more lifelike.
