Todd's audio is mind boggling good, and his voice is excellent. Persuasive and erudite at the same time. He manages to quietly expose the flaws of a system, while praising its strengths. Wish more TH-cam creators presented in this style. I.e. fewer bro presenters, clickbait panters and hype merchants.
I agree with your reaction about the case, no grip and cheap materials, mine is now getting scratched on the lens mount, would not buy again. Nice review, thanks.
Liked the video as it was a great video, but also because someone is finally mentioning Cinema P3. I hope filmic learns it’s lesson and stops the subscription garbage, I will say if they didn’t I may not have ever found the far superior Cinema P3 app.
I’ve been looking at this setup for a few days now and your video has been the best explanation, and has actual photo comparisons of the different lenses. Thank you sir.
Don’t know if you purchased it, I got mine this past week and it’s incredible. The case alone is the most premium case I’ve ever owned. The lens is superior to every other one I’ve tried. I got the $300 kit and it’s absolutely worth it.
This entire kit for the price is mind blowing. Everything in the kit is so well made, even the case is premium. Actually thee best case I’ve ever had on my phone. I tried the litechaser kit and was underwhelmed. Got this and was honestly blown away. Freewell are good people too, because my nd 8 filter for the lens didn’t tighten all the way. I emailed them and they took care of it within a day. Will absolutely buy more products that I need from this company. Really impressed by them.
Thank you very much for the detailed review of the FreeWell iPhone products and especially in conjunction with the excellent Cinema P3 app! Neither in the video, nor in the blog you did not highlight the fact that ND filters for an anamorphic lens, unlike filters for DSLR, cannot be stacked, although it is understandable in principle because of vignetting problems. In my opinion, threaded systems with adapter rings are much more convenient, which allow you to use high quality DSLR filters on the iPhone. Thank you especially for the visual comparison of the Glow and Snow Mist filters, because the official response from FreeWell gave me the exact opposite descriptions :).
Moment created a range of lenses, including an Anamorphic lens many years along with VND filters, not sure how the Anamorphic lens would compare side by side with this lens though. PolarPro also created a case, grip, CPL and ND filters for the iPhone too.
@@Kapulot No doubt, such accessories are available on the market; however, this is the first time anyone has created a filter system as convenient. Some of the brand names mentioned in your message require you to buy the grip for every single iPhone you will purchase & can be used only with their case.
@@FreewellGear I should have given a bit more information to the OP when I responded to their comment, that’s on me, thank you for clarifying. Love the product and if I hadn’t just bought a new RF lens id be picking up the anamorphic set up for sure! Haha
very helpful.. I'm in the same camp that I would prefer the option to use solid ND filters that can mount without the need for the anamorphic lens adaptor... I tried this exact system with the VND and it didn't control enough light. Also, at stop 1and 5 you could see the distortion in the corners.... pretty worthless on sunny days when you really need more of a 32 or 64 equivalent.
Honestly i love how patiently and with ease you have explained in detail, thanks a lot for the video. And I love to know what i just learned from here. I love the lighting in your video and, do share the details of the lighting and filter you have used in making your own video. Im an amateur, so pardon my simple question. I shall be using a gimbal, DJI om % or insta 360 Flow. hope that would take the weight of these filters.
Great video explaining the product. Would that be a good starter kit for someone who's beginner but wants nice quality footage for an upcoming trip ? First trip my child and want to be able to capture nice footage for make a video for memories.
wow, I was looking for this. thanks, Todd for this review. I want to ask about the difference btw 1.33 and 1.55 anamorphic. I want to buy one for making short films with the iPhone. but I can't find a comparison about it. If you can give me some advice about it. thanks.
Looks great! I really should invest in some changes to the ergonomics of the iPhone because that’s the only thing holding my back from using it more like a camera. In the end, it’s a great look!
Hey thank you so much for the review. I was thinking of getting the Sherpa and the VND filter. But is the 1-5 enough for bright days? I feel like it might be still let in too much light in? What do you think?
yes... see my comment above.. I tried this system.... stop 1 and 5 has corner distortion, and 2 thru 4 lets in too much light for sunny day use.... no match for a true 32, 64 ND filter.....
Thanks for your review. I use Beastgrip but their last tele lens is not compatible with all their line of 58 mm ND filters so I am going to try Freewell but only if they make a tele lens. I've already have a Beastgrip MK2 anamorphic lens but a tele lens is the one I really need for my work and use it to shoot interviews. But I've ordered the case for iPhone 13 Pro from Amazon US whilst I can still find one. I think people would make a better use of their money if they buy a Smallrig video rig instead of Freewell's bluetooth grip. This way they can put not only a mic but also a light on the top of the rig. Just to be clear: I am referring to this video rig that you can use with the Freewell case, not the Smallrig rig where you insert the phone in so , obviously, you can't use with a case. They use the same name for two very different products. It's confusing
Thank you for the advice information, Good job 👍🏻 I really like your videos and the value of information in your videos. I will buy it and try it. But do you have any idea about the 1.55x blue anamorphic single lens with UV and the 1.55x anamorphic blue with different NV filters! do you have any idea or is a different between them? The 1.55x anamorphic single one for 199€ and 1.55x anamorphic with ND filters 150€ !!
I would know this too, but has Todd said, they are 2 separated filters kit, one set magnetized and one for anamorphic lens. So it's not modular as we wished.
Cool product and a nice overview as always. The buttons being to easy to push gets annoying really quickly-my Peak design case had* the same issue untiI I removed some inner material from the “button.”
Question: I’ve just purchased this system and the anamorphic lens is loose when fully tightened? Like, not going to fall off, but makes a noise when gently shaken. Have you experienced this? Not sure if it’s the lens or the case…
I have a question, what applications for taking photos and recording videos on the iPhone does this freewell work with? because with the app Moment and Halide does not work Bluetooth
Thank you for the in depth coverage on this kit. That was a great review, and you answered a lot of the questions I had about it. I am wondering, though, about something you didn't appear to cover, or perhaps I simply missed it. That is the item description on their website states that this is only compatible with their Freewell iphone cases. Are they really using some proprietary mounting system, or is this lens actually compatible with other M-mount mounting solutions? Thank you. Cheers!
Not compatible. Freewell has made this system so non-modular and non-compatible. Huge investment for short term functionality (by iPhone 16 will probably be obsolete again).
Really curious about the Sherpa case. It looks like a bayonet mount design. Will it hold other lenses like the moment M series, Moondog, or small rig? I have many lens systems and just moved to the 15 pro and would be interested in that case if it does.
I bought the VND mist 2-5 and find it has quite bad color cast already from stop 2. It gives a yellow and red tint and makes skintones awful. Is this normal/expected?
Why the heck don't they just offer the case with the magnetic base, have different size base where you can use their other tread on filter kits. Come on Freewell let us use the filters we already have bought from you with just a case and a magnetic base.
1:49 I don't particularly care for this dark blue-violet color that's around the side here. He says while using a shirt with exactly the same color. 🤦♂😂 Oh, well, maybe he likes as shirt but not as phone case.
The Sherpa it's a good idea, but the cool magnetic filters kit and anamorphic kit are 2 completely different products, only common thing it's the iphone case. Magnetic Filter kit it's useful, but no ND64. Anamorphic Kit it's cool, ND64 it's there, but It doesn't have effects filters, and the lens is only 1.55x and not 1.33x.
So true about the case. Did they bother to hire a product designer? It’s edge is slippery, as in smooth and poor gripping surfaces. Missed design element. Buttons have been poorly designed/manufactured that makes buttons hyper active. The color? Would anyone other than Freewell? I wrote them to ask if they offer black or grey. Nope. They offer only that blue….because it matches their logo color. Who really cares about their logo color. Not me. How about you? There magnetic filters do fit well, but since bought into the filter attachment system, and unfortunately WE have to use their slippery blue case. The ONLY time I’ll use their case is when I want to use there filters. That’s a real shame. Freewell, if you’re reading this, do something that your competitors would do for their customers. Make a better case.
Been looking at anamorphic options for the iPhone and it boiled down to the Freewll and Moment. Moment just got much better looking accessories (phone case, lens, etc.), more color options and the additional x1.33 lens. Also the filters appear to be more “modular” as Todd wishes in the video. However, the biggest downside is the lens not being updated to accommodate for the bigger sensor on the 14 pro max, which results in more noticeable black borders/shadows at the edges. Freewell’s anamorphic lens does better at dealing with shadow/black border and distortion issues. The downsides are not having an x1.33 option, and requiring different filter attachment systems (lens vs no lens). Finally, and this is the biggest factor in stopping me from pulling the trigger, is the ugly case with only one color option. I really wish new case designs and an anamorphic lens compatible with all filters offered by Freewell is in the works in the near future.
This is nice and all. But in the end of the day you‘re stuck with that usb 2.0 lighting connector on the iPhone to offload that 4k footage. Come on apple, give us usb-c already
An honest and unbiased review, excellent job!
im just commenting because the audio in this video is insanely good
Might I add the audio is AMAZING

What is the size of anamorphic lense ? Wondering if I could attach my own diffusion filter

small rig mount fit with small rig brand and moment lens . Freewell Sherpa has a slightly big mount .
The way the anamorphic just does not feel secure compared to other anamorphic lens mounting systems
