Most useful tool is a multimeter. Most smart door bells require 18-24v so it comes in handy at every job otherwise the customer will be calling you back. Always carry extra transformers (hard wired or plug in) and be prepared to go into spider infested basements or dusty attics to locate the transformer. All in all easy money but I’m constantly going out to customers home to re do a job a random electrician or DIYselfer attempted. The fun installs are front a rear door bells to a chime. FYI that’s a fair price for a install. We charge $99 and $50 extra for a transformer replacement and chime replacement. 👍🏽
I have a Nest Hello doorbell, purchased 2-1/2 years ago and installed myself. My mechanical indoor chime recently stopped working. I assumed it was the chime connector that came with Nest and mounts inside the chime box. I called Google and they sent me a new connector free of charge. Still didn't work so I assumed it must be the transformer. Did some research and learned other people had the same problem and corrected the issue by purchasing a 24v transformer. I should have tested my 16v transformer first with a multimeter but I went ahead and upgraded to a 24v transformer. Nope, chime still not working. So.... I think to myself it has to be the mechanical chime. I did some research and found there was only one mechanical chime I could find on Amazon that claimed to be compatible with a 24v transformer. I bought it for $15 and replaced the old chime. Still not working! Guess what? I finally discovered I had the indoor chime turned off in the Nest app on my phone! I felt like an idiot! I guess I have a backup chime and transformer now! Maybe this comment will help someone learn from my own mistake.
Point of note you always do the power regulator piece inside the chime. It regulates the correct constant power so not to blow the circuit/transformer or doorbell

The motion sensors are light years ahead of any regular flood light motion setup. I recommend staying away from the ring doorbells that have a battery- even if hardwired to a transformer it only charges the battery so eventually ud be replacing the battery- stick with the ring pro hardwired doorbell- no battery to fuss with
Installed a Ring doorbell with my dad and brother about a month ago. Powered it off a 24v transformer we had from work leftovers. Replaced our bell with a wireless one, but our wired bell had three wires. Clipped them and the bell went off. Fun party trick to show the kids. I still don’t know why it had three wires, though.
I started with the G4 Doorbell from Ubiquiti, it connects wirelessly to your Ubiquiti home network. In my case I bought into the whole system and installed cameras and access points. The router/nvr/switch stored all the footage on a local hard drive and I don't have to pay cloud fees. Ubiquiti - Simplifying IT
I have the ring pro. Sometimes you have to change your transformer to 20volts in your door bell ringer. I am surprised that customers call for easy dIY fix.
I have a Ring door bell, but I prefer Nest, because it records 24/7 and that’s what you want. The Ring WILL MISS what you want to see. Anyways. I had to recharge the Ring very often. So what I end up doing was buying a plug-in transformer from Amazon, just search Plug in transformers for Ring or Nest. Connect the transformer to the Ring Drill a hole through the garage wall and plug it in.
Bought the Wyze cameras and door sensors. Been very happy with them and I can get 7 days of HD playback with a 128g sd card.. Also, I work nights, so no doorbell at my casa.
Jumper? I have a door bell that doesn't work due to what looks like maybe the house had two doorbells before I purchase the house but now there is only one.
I have a Ring Doorbell Pro (hardwired). Works great, except it chimes quietly randomly throughout the night. I had to wrap tape around my chimes to make it inaudible.
You can go into the ring app and set times up when you dont want the motion alarm to go off or simply set it to only ring when someone pushes the button
@@josephgraham1065 I don't think it's the motion alarm. Normal motion alarms trigger an app alert and don't ring the bell. The spurious soft chimes in the middle of the night don't seem to be noticed by the app at all but send voltage to the mechanical chimes.
@@josephgraham1065 yeah one of these days I really should. I’ve been meaning to. In the interim, the tape works surprisingly well-Muffles the quiet phantom chimes almost entirely while intentionally ringing the bell is still almost as loud as normal
Do you have a video (or can you make one) explaining what jobs can/cannot be done without proper certs/licensing? There’s so much misinformation and I can’t seem to find anything accurate. I understand this may also be state dependent, but a generalization would be helpful nonetheless.
I see that’s cat5 wiring, which the gauge of wire does not provide much amperage. Have you seen any issues with that doorbell or any other doorbell cameras when it comes to a “ low battery “ issue?? Do you replace wiring if needed ?

I bet the handyman has more cash in his bank account than the homeowner. Don’t be fooled by the old 🥾 and dusty 🧢.
Ubiquiti - Simplifying IT
Flouresent bulbs sometimes have issues with motion/light sensors. LED Cobb bulbs work great and are dimmable.
I’ve been trying to do this recently, great timing
Hey are you still getting into this?
I love this video. Am fixing to start my own business
Upgraded my transformer in the attic to 16V output for an Arlo doorbell camera in my 70s home. The original metered at 14.8V ... so close!
I use the RING doorbell and cameras. I really like to use them, and I have them for several years.
Where do you get customers how can you advertise a service like this
Word of mouth. Never had to advertise.
No door bell for me i got 11 cameras and one by my door has a two way talk and love it
I've installed 2 of those for customers. Pretty cool item.
HM, The jumper you refer to is a diode used to allow new digital doorbells to work on an AC voltage supplied by your doorbell transformer.
It's just a solid wire. No diodes.
Hopefully you put weather proof light bulbs. For low and high temperatures.
@@celeronxl that is very strange I would call ring support and see what they say
@@josephgraham1065 yeah one of these days I really should. I’ve been meaning to. In the interim, the tape works surprisingly well-Muffles the quiet phantom chimes almost entirely while intentionally ringing the bell is still almost as loud as normal
Day 17 of asking Handyman to say Howdy in the intro.

You do know the make electric powered automatic screwdrivers. You dont gotta turn the screws by hand.
Wow. 😖
@@TheHandyman1 Im just playin. You rock handyman keep them videos coming!
Your hussle game is on point!
Do you have a video (or can you make one) explaining what jobs can/cannot be done without proper certs/licensing? There’s so much misinformation and I can’t seem to find anything accurate.
I understand this may also be state dependent, but a generalization would be helpful nonetheless.
Do you have a video how to program ring door bell to google hub?
I see that’s cat5 wiring, which the gauge of wire does not provide much amperage. Have you seen any issues with that doorbell or any other doorbell cameras when it comes to a “ low battery “ issue?? Do you replace wiring if needed ?
OLD LEATHER SMITH here been watching U 4 quite a while, learned a lot, I WOULD LIKE 2 WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A SAFE AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃
I have a ring... been sitting on a shelf since xmas 2017... cant remember if the total lack of privacy, the privacy policy on the app, or the subscription fees prevented me from installing it.... I have in house POE cameras recording 24/7 no subs and complete control.
As a Professional Handyman in Reno NV, Rock Solid Handyman Services LLC, I bartered with a customer on a 30 min job to get my New/used Ring. LOVE IT!!!
I have an older Ring doorbell and it sucks! The motion detection is pretty bad on it. Im gonna be getting the nest doorbell cam soon!
Hello what about installing a powered camera where there is no powered doorbell button to power off of? I have an unused security system just inside my door I was wondering if I can power off of
