On this episode we make way for the leeward islands, bound for Huahine. I had to cut our Moorea visit short due to some approaching storms so we had a great overnight sail to Fare Harbor and got in and settled the day before the weeks worth of storms arrived.

Doug. My 55 year old buddy could not walk 200 yards. Both his knees were shot. He took a lot of pain killers. Australia would not replace his knees. He went to penang malaysia and got both knees replaced. 2 months later he was running. 10,000.00 for both knees replaced. He is so stoked. That was 5 years ago Good luck.

I feel your bed life cause my low back and neck were busted up during my merchant marine career. Broke my neck and the 3 vertebrae fractured plus damaged disc and ended up with 3 level fusion with taitatunm rods & 6 screws ! Low back missing one disc at L-4 nothing to be done there. Thank God for Norco !
Couch bound here most other time.
Then covid did my lungs in, luckily I'm still here 70 years with a few more left.

Huahine is certainly one of my 5 best Island in Polynesia.

You are an amazing sailor and teacher !! My Great Grandpa Rene was a Whaler and my mom and him lived in the Cape Verde Island of Brava. Grandpa was a great swimmer and saved whalers lives including his own brother !!!! Mom said I look like him !! To me the Ocean is a magnet and I am the steel !! It's really great to follow you on your journey and this leg/portion is no exception. To experience these atolls and islands as pearls on a string in a very large open sea must be amazing. You have previously referred to how the Polynesians navigated these areas and this was truly a fantastic achievement and of course still interesting today. I really like how you refer to history and literature to put your journey into perspective. It puts us and obviously you in the right mood. Even with modern technology, such a journey is still a complete great experience and not least an achievement, especially when sailing alone.
Yes I love history and find it enriches the experience of visiting a place and there is so much to be learned from those who came before us!

Back then The Posting Read - Whalers Wanted No Need to Know How to Swim. Great Grandpa Rene also had a Tobacco Farm. As a young girl when my Grandmother Emilia Rene worked the farm she developed an allergic reaction. So her dad Great Grandpa Rene taught her how to smoke the pipe. I remember when Grandma died at the age of 100 and still enjoying her pipe !!

Hey, have you heard of Henk vd Velde, a dutch sailor, went on a trimaran visiting some places rarely visited. And, have you ever read the book from Jan de Hartog - Dutch Glory. Its about a big vessel but when ships were powered by steam.

Yeah I have been working on an episode that talks about my tattoos and body modifications and the history of tattooing and body modification.
My son can't stand repetitive noise. Not unusual finding him hunting for a noise when sailing our Nicholson 31
(until finding it!). I'm afraid glass jars are a no. Plastic containers are best in boats. Noise also helps the onset of seasickness, so watch out.
great sail! I'm curious how hard is it to sleep with other boats nearby? I'm sure not all fishing boats have AIS. I would be pulling an all nighter because I'd be too paranoid!
Not a ton of fishing boats around this way, along coasts I sleep in the cockpit with 15min alarms. But rest is very important because fatigue can be deadly as it really impairs your judgment and abilities
I read Bligh was a good captain let down by sailors that had unsurprisingly become soft after a stay in Tahiti.
He was a brilliant captain and pulled off the impossible, few could have done the !!!
@@SailorJames Bligh was for shure a good seaman,but he was a super corrupt a..hole,not a good captain at all,otherwise the mutiny would have never happened . Read the whole trilogy! Also what happened later in the island where he was governor! He was a real A..
... There are other mariners that deserve more praise like Shakelton,John Guzzwell, Moitessier and lots of others! But Thanks for sharing, it is a fantastic Read the whole trilogy. Thanks for taking us along with your great videos.

Bligh was later sent to take command of the colony of New South Wales. The British Army Officers from the New South Wales Corps had run the colony like a military junta and lined their pockets at the expense of the free settlers. Bligh, a navel officer tried to end the army junta and assist the free settlers and freed convicts to prosper. The Army mutinied and threw him in jail. One man had two mutinies, this was the end of his career in the navy. He was brave but may have needed some management training.
Yes its interesting that Bligh doesn't have a good reputation in Australia because of that. Yet as the reading here highlights he was obviously highly capable and courageous and also honorable by the sounds of it.
Another enjoyable segment of your voyage. Just wondering when you are out in the open sea at night are you able to sleep or must you keep watch?I’m going to get the book”Men against the sea” sounds interesting. Thank you
When I am in the open sea I set my alarm for every 2 hours, get up look for ships, check the course and lay back down. The AIS picks up ships that are within 10 miles and an alarm sounds if their course will send them within 2 miles of me. When sailing in busy water ways with fishing boats that might not have AIS I sleep in the cockpit with alarms set for every 15 minutes.

hey brother, I just discovered your mission. I am so inspired and sorry to loop it back to myself. But I just bought a six-meter sailing boat to start (inner sea Netherlands). I have someone who will show me the literal ropes. .But I'm just looking for some smart general reading to get into it theoretically. Any tips on reading or philosophy to get me going would so welcome. Love and all the best.

Actually, if you had a good chart and kept a log, GPS would only be for an ‘assist’. Add to that, your patience to wait for light, and a constant watch as you approach, and when the GPS fails, you’ll still be good. Charts be cool

Awesome videos! Love you content. 2 questions. How do you heave to in the ocean? Sea anchor? Or just stop and see where you end up in the morning? What do you mean by floating the anchor?
It’s a process of backwinding your headsail and tying the helm off in the opposite direction so the boat basically moves slightly forward and slightly sideways at about a knot

It’s my hydrovane self steering gear. It is a mechanical autopilot that steers the boat based on wind direction

Men Against the Sea is the second novel in the trilogy by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall about the mutiny aboard HMS Bounty.

I don’t have a video on that subject but will be doing a zoom class first of next year on all things cruising that will go into detail about the subject. I can tell you that I generally make $2500 a month , sometimes $3000 and I have never ran out of money or even gotten too close. But I live at anchor 95% of the time

Bligh gets a bad rep from the movies. None is correct in their overall presentation of the crew and their dynamics. Cut and paste the correct bits together and a close approximation could be had.
Bligh was one of the European world's best navigators and he was extremely kind to his crew (for his time). He was nothing close to as cruel as shown in the movies. One BIG thing is the Bounty's crew were volunteers - none were press-ganged as shown in many of the movies and the Royal Navy also failed Bligh by not putting aboard Marines to back up his authority.
Bligh's abilities were overshadowed by Cook and Vancouver. They all sailed sailed together (with Cook as captain).
Bligh's great failure was in Australia. He really botched his governorship.
I agree 100% ! That big hollywood movie made him look weak and confused and it was total bullshit. I wish a real movie would be made just about this story.
