You'll only destroy your own experience if you let fear overpower you. And try not to be too scared as sail boats are really safe 90% of the time. Also, good job clipping on whenever you went onto the bow and sides, I've met so many people who don't bother. Keep going hard and stay adventures. Gorgeous boat by the way.

I respect it. Most rich kids prefer to flaunt their parents wealth and know nothing of hard work due to their upbringing. So far a wonderful adventure. When I was in your age area I was living aboard my S&S Chris Pawnee 26. I sailed her thousands of ocean miles. She lacked 2 things that your boat also lacks, as you found out the hard way. 1. A sea hood to protect the companionway slider from water forcing in. And 2. A cockpit dodger. And with skin like yours ( I’m the same) some sort of Bimini top or cockpit shade. Watch that sun, it killed my identical twin brother in his thirties. All of my cruising boats in the future had these 3 features. You, otherwise have a very nice boat. She goes windward well, especially for a heavy displacement full keel, and with that narrow beam (like my Alberg 35), she is easily driven. Interestingly, you have about the same waterline length as my A-35! Very good for you. My next boat a Kelly Peterson 44 had 39’ waterline. I shopped for waterline! Well enjoy the adventure! Looks like you are. Love it. Great job! PS. I’m now near 80 and still sailing!

When I turned 18, I graduated high school, and solo cycled across the US. There were often many days where I got frustrated, and just got so tired of the contact little pokes during the trip. Some days it would really get to me, and i would be on a road in the absolute middle of nowhere, and would just yell into the world.
However, as frustrated as I got, I still had to keep pedaling forward.
During your trip, I can tell that the pokes were starting to get to you. The little things like a minor water leak, or the contact sound of your sail, they start to drive you insane. Yet at the days go on, you had no choice but to continue on, and really learn your mental limits.
I’m not sure about you, but to me, both of our trips seemed like our into adult passage trips. You learn more in such a span of time than if you were to stick to a traditional route. You really learn who you are, and you learn how to become more mentally mature when dealing with stressful situations. The rage is normal, we all get to our limits, but what’s most important is how we react.
Anyways, I’m glad that at the end of the day, you still had a wonderful trip. An experience that you will hold for the rest of your life. This was beyond impressive to say the least, and I understand what that felt like to you. I wish you the best in life, and keep living your own adventure.

Holy cow Garrett, thank you for documenting and sharing. I love your honesty about how it feels to be out there on your own. I’m so impressed by your abilities! Can’t imagine what your mom feels like with you out adventuring across an unpredictable ocean. Hopefully the pride outweighs the fear. Can’t wait to see part 2. Stay safe!

Ya, it's great how he documents his fears, impatience, hopes, gentle self-mockery. I loved the bit when he thought there was a problem with masthead, & smiled at having maybe dreamed it. Yowza! Then he covers too details about weather sea-state wind following seas 15' rogue waves and more. Amazing!

you as a young person, you seem very well educated and smart.. don't take this for granted.. i used to live on the big island farming kava and other agriculture. the place you live and the experience you have is 100 fold compared to the average person( especially your age )... key takeaway here "don't take it for granted, and enjoy the present"! cheers man.

I am 19 too and have been learning to sail amd saving up so I can set out someday to sail the globe. I've been second guessing my plan but when I saw your video pop up and your doing exactly what I want to do you you gave me some motivation to work harder to accomplish my goal.
