The book “Fire Lover” is an excellent read. One of the most incriminating pieces of evident against John Orr not mentioned in Joseph Wambaugh’s excellent book (but mentioned in a documentary) was a total and complete accident. When Orr was under investigation, and before he discovered the GPS tracking device on his car, a fire broke out and the dispatcher, completely by mistake, disseminated the wrong address. So while all the emergency vehicles were racing towards the wrong location issued by the dispatcher, Orr’s vehicle was being tracked racing to the actual location of the fire. How could he have known? The answer is quite obvious. Also, after his arrest and subsequent conviction arson activity in Southern California dropped by a HUGE number. Can’t recall the exact figures but it went from dozens a year down to a single digit per year.

I’ve found this case fascinating for years. Can you imagine what would have happened if he *did* become a police officer? I can easily imagine him committing murders then fabricating evidence to “discover” the perpetrator. After all, he had no trouble with the four people he did kill - including an older woman entertaining her very young grandson by showing him the hardware store. I can imagine few things more terrifying than being trapped in a huge, unlit store frantically trying to find an exit while smoke surrounds you and your grandchild. 😱😢

I'm about to pay you a very, very high compliment amongst us forensic aficionados, Dr. Grande, so I hope that you'll read this.
I think I can speak for many of us, that we really enjoy you covering the cases that were covered on the TV program Forensic Files. Many of us have a great amount of nostalgia associated with that show as it was the predecessor to pretty much everything that's on Discovery ID.
The narrator for that program, Peter Addenbrooke Thomas, is a legend in the forensics community. His voice is so iconic and frankly quite soothing despite the subject matter that he's delivering. It was quite a blow when he died as we would no longer be able to enjoy his voice on that program.

In 8-21 Gary Maynard, a college prof of Criminality, was arrested for serial arson in Northern California, and still in jail awaiting trial. He is charged with setting multiple huge wildfires, one that burned a 100,000 acres. Indeed, a very hot crime spree.

Thanks for the video Dr. Grande. This type of mentality is absolutely dangerous. It happens a lot of the time with firefighters but can also transcend into other activities. What is a firefighter arsonist? Someone who produces a problem or conflict for the sole purpose of responding to it, and thereafter investigates it further. They produce a problem, then solve it. The result is more arson's, more investigations, and more firefighters.

Back in 1989 when I was a mechanic at the Ford dealership, we had a customer that was so obsessed with firefighting, he had his new F350 pickup repainted fire engine red. He also had a water tank with a pump and hose installed in the bed, and had personalized license plates RESQ U.
The thing is, the guy was not a member of any fire fighting agency. As I understand, he had applied and failed with every fire department in the desert. But, he had a scanner and showed up to just about every brush fire in the area. I always wondered how many of those he had something to do with. I am no psychologist, but the guy was a nut. I mean, as boys it normal to play with toy fire trucks. But for a grown man to try and convert a new pickup into a fire truck is a tad weird.
