I’m glad to see Sonic Mania’s special stages made first place but on a related note, I feel it’s worth mentioning that the special stages in Sonic Mania Encore deserve recognition; the increased difficulty and bigger maps made it all the more rewarding when you finally got all seven. In Mania mode, most of the emeralds can be acquired at a Mach 2 Speed if you take the right route whereas with Encore mode, the only emeralds I was able to get at Mach 2 were Stages 5 and 6 while the others required Mach 3 because of how far away the UFOs start from Sonic.
This was really interesting to see the Special Stages from the Sonic series being ranked from worst to best. And I was really surprised that the Sonic 3 and Knuckles' special stages didn't reach the #1 spot because in my opinion, those were literally the greatest special stages in all of Sonic games!
For me the sonic mania blue spheres broke me by making me get the rings first so I don’t rank it that high sadly. Other than that one level where there is no way to go backwards cuz the entire thing hallways made of spheres that with the part that you need to use those yellow spheres at the correct angle or ur dead I can see why you all liked it. Mania is still my #1 no matter what tho

FYI - Sonic Advance has a flip move you can do that DRAMATICALLY increases your hitbox. It's a big help, and lets you do stuff like collect all the rings in those squares you fell through, and guarantee hitting all rings in a path. Not saying it's all that great a special stage, since I didn't like it much either, just the flip move makes it a lot more bearable, and I find is practically required to get through.
Thank you Nathaniel for giving Sonic Rush Adventure its flowers! It is still the most fleshed out special stage of all time, giving you time to learn the mechanics, and the boat upgrade feature changes everything! It definitely deserves its praise!
I'm glad to see some love for the 3D Blast Genesis special stage. I recently played through the game again, making sure to get all the chaos emeralds, and the special stages were a seriously fun time. 3D Blast as a whole is just a really great game once you get the hang of the controls.
This rank is so spot-on! I liked the Sonic Rush special stages cuz the controls are very responsive and Sonic 3's will always stay as my top favourite. I do however don't like Sonic 2's (Especially the Genesis version) as it was more frustrating.

I like these stages when I was younger I had no idea what were the point of the stages mainly because I mostly played Mario games more than sonic games.
I’d say the difficulty curb in mania’s normal special stages isn’t perfect, as the one I (rarely) fail on the most is the 5th one, while the 7th is just as easy as the 2nd one or even the 1st one
"Good luck having the reaction time of a star-nosed mole." is a great line. 3d 90's sonic is also my favourite, so chunky and spiky, great. I could happily play an entire game with mania's model of him, with the lighter blue he just looks excellent and so, 90's..
But really though, imagine you're waiting at the dentists office, playing Sonic Lost World on the 3DS and all of a sudden you get into a special stage and have to get up in the middle of the room and move around the place
Man, I beat the sonic rush special stages with my fingers and a broken touch screen and it was still one of the funniest experiences I've ever had. How were they beat by some funny polygons?
I'm not sure Sonic is "pushing the plane himself" when you get the blue ring. I think it's a afterburner/jet upgrade, and the implication is that the plane is now going so fast that the character has to hold on for dear life.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles special stages are the most best in my opinion of all the special stages, also can't wait for Bandy's Universe, the trailer has my expectations high, I know you won't disappoint

Hey, Nathaniel, nice video, but i wanna tell you something about your video where you tried to beat 3d land while only crouching. You can get through the purple doors, i tried. If you have a fire flower in your inventory, grab it when you're at the door, waddle up to the door, crouch jump, and throw a fireball right before landing, and Mario will open the door. It might take a few tried but it definitly works.

Blue sphere was so great that they even brought it back in mania and you can even unlock it as its own minigame similar to sonic 3 and knuckles

You can also increase and decrease the speed on the Sonic 3D Blast Saturn version by pressing up or down
