Great reaction. 'Megitsune' is the song I would always suggest is best for most people for their first BABYMETAL song. It regularly tops fan polls for their favourite BABYMETAL song even though it was one of their earliest. It is also the song they have played live more than any other and remains a feature on most of their live set lists.
Like their song Karate (which you haven't seen yet), 'Megitsune' reflects a lot of their Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen I think) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - the kitsune masks were prominent in this video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody and this shows the inner strength of women through the ages (one lyric says about crying inside, smiling outside I think) - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) and they are strong.
The breakdown with the pig squeals uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). This is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo.
The official videos are good but BABYMETAL are a live performance act and that is where you will see (and hear) them at their best - avoid fan made compilation videos unless there is no better, full live, alternative. You alrady have some excellent suggestions for more, personally I would recommend 'Headbanger' live at Legend 1997 (1997 was the lead singer Su-metal's year of birth, so this was her 16th birthday celebration in December 2013) th-cam.com/video/QEsOaMbNFww/w-d-xo.html

You're gonna have a lot of fun diving into BABYMETAL. Megitsune is a good first intro to them. The other good intro songs to react to include Headbanger (Legend 1997 live performance), Road of Resistance (official), Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischiefs of God intro). Enjoy the journey!

I could tell right from the head bobbing at the beginning you were going to like this one. This is considered by most to be their best official music video, as it really has a lot of traditional Japanese elements, from where it was filmed, to the traditional instruments you see in the video. The song itself is basically about how women shouldn't need to conform to traditional roles in Japanese society and have many aspects that should be respected, and Suzuka made that very clear when she pulled that tanto blade from her microphone and said "Maidens...shouldn't be underestimated".

I think you'd like 'BxMxC' it's their most recent music video. It has heavy autotune like Kingslayer and it's really heavy. And Su is rapping, we never thought we'd see that. Another one is 'Distortion' it has Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy doing screams and it's one of their heavier songs. But honestly all their songs are fantastic when performed live. It really depends more on getting the right video than the right song. The best live performance of every song is fantastic. I hated 'Meta Taro' on the album but seeing it live (on video) a few times i really started to love it.

The biggest gap was their first single 'Doki Doki Morning' which was recorded in late 2010 and the music video in late 2011 but their first album wasn't released until early 2014.

You can find people that will bitch about how BABYMETAL weren't organically formed in a garage someplace, but any sensible person should agree that their songs are well constructed.
I think this one is a masterpiece.
According to Yuyoyuppe, the song arranger, this one went back and forth 36 times between him and BABYMETAL's producer Koba.
The final mix was almost lost when many of the project windows would no longer open because of computer issues.
Fortunately, it was retrievable. So, back up your hard drives kids!
Looks like you've already had suggestions for 'Rondo of Nightmare' and 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!'.
    I fully support those recommendations. : )

Yeah, when I first saw short clips of a couple of their videos around 2014/2015, I wasn't really interested because 1. my brain was so confused by the contrasting sounds, and 2. I wasn't open minded enough at the time to listen to non-English music. But now, I listen to BABYMETAL daily! So, thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance. Here is a little bit of info...In 2019, BABYMETAL became the first Asian artists to hit #1 on BILLBOARD's Top Rock Albums chart with their latest album, "Metal Galaxy" and a couple days ago it was announced that the album won the MTV Japan VMA 2020 award for BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. BTW, BABYMETAL celebrated their TEN year anniversary last month!
BABYMETAL have performed with, toured, or opened for Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), Metallica, Korn, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, and Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), to name a few of many. BABYMETAL have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. Plus the 20+ awards they have been given. They have 50+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. 🦊🤘 SUBSCRIBED

Thank you for the info! I actually saw them live about 5 years ago (I think) at Download Festival. They weren’t scheduled to play but they came out for Through The Fire and Flames with Dragonforce which was awesome! I really enjoyed seeing them live then but even then I couldn’t get into them. Like I said I just wasn’t as open minded back then and into checking out different styles of music! But this track I really enjoyed, and I’ll definitely be checking out more! Thank you 🙏🏻

BABYMETAL just makes me happy! Definitely check out their live stuff. While their genre is mostly "kawaii metal", they venture into other genres as well (with music reminiscent of punk, speed metal, rap, ska, electronic, etc). I like Headbanger, Rondo of Nightmare, Road to Resistance, PA PA YA, Karate, Syncopation, Distortion, BxMxC... but you can't really go wrong with any of their songs. It's not a gimmick. It's carefully planned out conceptually and then well executed with talented singers, excellent backing band/musicality and great performances.

It was a delight to see you smile right away! I totally see where you are coming from, ten years ago I would never have accepted Metal with smiling girls doing choreographed dancing and singing poppy choruses. Thankfully, most of us grow up at some point.
If you check out more, you‘ll notice how much the uncommon dancing adds to the live energy, which in turn leads to some very hyped crowds. I slept on them for years aswell. Like many curious metalheads I checked them out when they were buzzing for Gimme Chocolate and I even checked all of the MV's that they had available because eventough I did not fall hard for the band/concept I still didn't dislike it at all. But at the time my mind was like "yeah the Japanese are crazy haha" because I knew them for their crazy animes and crazy commercials and I thought "Haha they done made me laugh again with their weirdness" and then I didn't check them for years.
It wasn't until one a long drunken night with a friend we stumbled upon some live performances on TH-cam that it hit me hard : that shit was beyond anything I'd ever seen. I could have never imagined that that concept was SO GOOD live. Trust me if you already like the MV's then you're going to fall off your chair from some of the videos you're about to react to. Live is where it's at. The most amazing thing for me was the crowd interaction. That's on a level of its own.

"Megitsune" (メギツネ,) was released in Japan on June 19, 2013 as the fifth single from the album Babymetal. It is also the first single released independently from the idol group Sakura Gakuin. the full music video, directed by Takuya Tada (多田卓也), uploaded to the official Babymetal channel on June 4, 2013. When this video was release Su Metal was just 15 (16 if don't count birthday) while Yui Metal & Moa Metal was 13 (14 if don't count birthdays).
Unlike screams in traditional heavy metal, "Megitsune" is filled with festival chants by Yui Metal and Moa Metal like "wasshoi" and "sore sore", while Su Metal sings in the melodramatic style of enka.
Commentary from BabyMetal for this MV:
    th-cam.com/video/tXCC93Txtnw/w-d-xo.html
The music video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo; it is now a popular spot for Babymetal fans from outside Japan to visit. The three members are shown dancing in Noh theater. In the last chorus,
The song contains lyrics such as "from the time of birth, women are actresses" which reflect on the song's theme of women remaining strong when living with their varied facial expressions. The song relates foxes, which disguises themselves for deception in Japanese mythology, to women, who disguise themselves with makeup. According to Su Metal. foxes are similar to women as they can keep their true feeling hidden, even through hard times, leaving a cool impression. The last chorus contains the phrase "underestimate [maidens] at your own peril" (なめたらいかんぜよ, nametara ikan ze yo, literally "if you underestimate, it would be regrettable"), which is also famously said by Masako Natsume's character in the 1982 yakuza film "Onimasa"; whether or not this was intentional has never been confirmed.

When this song came out, Su (the lead) was 14 and the other two, Moa and Yui, were 12. Su is 22 now. And Yui left the band for still unknown reasons in 2018. Some say she was sick. Some say she got pregnant. We may never really know. I think 3 girl rotate on tour to fill her spot.

  • @Hadesillo
    @Hadesillo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yep, they were 13/15/13 when they recorded this vid, so young and they were already rocking. Look how talented are our girls.
That instrument at the start it's a shamisen, a japanese instrument. This is the only song they have with a japanese folk theme to its background. I mean, don't think now they are something like Wagakki Band, a japanese band who plays folk rock.
Nope, Su has never done growls. They are always recorded by their studio team, even in live settings it's on the backtrack. Su is a very refined and educated talented young lady, I'm not sure if I want to see her doing the growls.
On the songs...Megitsune combines the characters Kitsune with me, meaning female foxes. The song plays with traditional japanese themes like the shinto legend of the female fox, that fox that appeared to a field man, shapeshifted into a beautiful young woman and took care of him giving him a bountiful life until one day she disappears and returns to the forests. They are speaking on the song of them being female foxes shapeshifted into women and how difficult it is to behave as expected. _"Ah, it's right. Always women are actresses. We're not foxes, not deceiving, but maiden-like female foxes. Girls are becoming more like an ideal woman. Smiling at face, crying at heart, saying "It's right", we never show our tears."_ I can even see a soft criticism on the struggle to behave as expected for a traditional woman.

I have heard this before and I‘m willing to get convinced otherwise, but it doesn‘t sound like a shamisen to me, more like a distorted piano.

    • @FourBleats
      @FourBleats 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The three-stringed guitar-like instrument you see in the video is the shamisen - I think there are a few notes from it (panned right, pitch bends up) at the start. What you hear that sounds a bit like a harp playing those fast runs of notes is probably the koto, a plucked instrument that typically has 13 (or 17) strings. I think there might even be a touch of traditional Japanese flute thrown in the verses. I'd love to hear a breakdown of Megitsune into its component tracks - I suspect there's far more happening that I can hear.

Nothing in the song up to that point really warns you that you should expect a breakdown that heavy. If you like Megitsune this much as an entry point, I think you're going to have a good time exploring the rest of the discography.
The songs that first got me hooked were the "Legend of 1997" performance of "Headbanger", and the official music video for "Karate". I'd recommend Headbanger first, because you need to check out a live performance with the Kamiband to really see the whole picture.

I strongly recommend you to react to Road of Resistance Live in Japan for its insane crowd interaction. Aside from this, the song itself is straight up fire! The instrumentals were tight. The vocals were really pleasing. And you should also look for the lyrics after you listened to it to understand it better. And DragonForce's Herman Li and Sam Totman wrote the guitar arrangements here so its really worth a shot. And also, if you're reacting to this, be sure to have pauses throughout the video or else Amuse Inc. (their talent agency) will smite your video. They're pretty strict with copyright issues. Other than that, you can just enjoy your time as you gradually fall down the foxhole.
    Kitsunes up!

I think your little "oh" at the beginning of the song was one of the best things I've heard and seen so far from a first time listener who was a little sceptic before going into it. I even watched it twice :D
You seem to have the same history with Babymetal as I do. Didn't really want to try out and listen to new stuff when I first found them years ago (around 2016 I guess) and was more into "straight forward" metal (Pantera, Slipknot, Machine Head, Killswitch Engage, etc) anyways, so I never gave them a real fair chance. Until a friend of mine showed me a live performance of Akatsuki 2.5 years ago, which pretty much got me instantly hooked. Been a fan ever since and they make up most of my Spotify playlist by a pretty wide margin nowadays. Every song is a different metal genre, often mixed with other metal and/or music genres, so it never gets boring and you'll always find something you're in the mood for with Babymetal.

Haha yeah I couldn’t believe it! And the history there is definitely the same, as I was and still am into those bands quite a lot. A lot of the more modern metal too. If Bring Me The Horizon hadn’t have done the collab idk when I would have given BABYMETAL a chance again! But I’m very glad they did, finding new music to listen to is awesome

I can't really get behind most of the "newer metal bands" from US/EU/UK I've heard in the last few years. I seem to have "outgrown" screaming/growling vocals (at least if the majority of a song is unclean) after a pretty lengthy Metal- and Deathcore phase. And I never really liked the bands that tend to use a lot of electronics/synth. These two styles seem to be most of what's coming out of the western hemisphere these days. But if you want to find new bands and music, you should really give the Japanese scene a try. They have a lot of female metal bands or at least female vocalists (which seems to be my thing lately) besides Babymetal that are pretty amazing. Lovebites, Unlucky Morpheus, Aldious, Mary's Blood or Doll$Boxx, only to name a few. Or if you want to go Canadian, try Unleash the Archers if you don't know them yet, their vocalist Brittney Slayes is pretty awesome.

You've done it now! So far you haven't heard Su-Metal's (the lead singer's) vocals properly. In "Kingslayer" they were over-processed for the style of the song. For this song, while absolutely amazing, they were still processed. You need to check out some live BABYMETAL to really get a proper feel for them. They tear it up at live shows from what I've seen since becoming a fan several months ago. I would say you need to check out "Headbanger" live at Legend 1997, as many others have suggested. I would also say to check out "Distortion" Live at Download 2018 to see how good Su is at playing with/controlling the crowd.
They have over 50 songs and not a single one sounds like the others. They sample anything from rap, to ska, to Latin metal, to J-Pop, to Folk, to death metal, and I can go on. They will not disappoint if you keep checking their stuff out!

I'm really glad you decided to check out some Babymetal. As great as the lead singer, Su-metal, sounds here, she is so much better live. All their songs have a different feel, so if you do check out anything else, which I hope you do, try to watch one of the plethora of live videos out there. I recommend Headbanger - Live from the Legend 1997 concert, which was actually held the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday - th-cam.com/video/YjjWZpf_jSs/w-d-xo.html or maybe the live performance of Akatsuki from their Budokan live performance - th-cam.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/w-d-xo.html

This is the song that made me a fan of Babymetal. If you want some more good stuff from them, check out the (live) performance of "Headbanger". This is a group that is best experienced live, you get to see the musicians perform on stage and they have big budget shows. Definitely check out a live song next if you're interested in more. (A good quality live show, not a fan cam).

Great reaction dude! You probably listened to "Gimme Chocolate" back in the day which is a bad representation of the rest of their music. I'm a huge Babymetal fan and "Gimme chocolate" does grow on you but it's still one of my least favorite songs by them. I think you're very right to watch the music video first. However, live shows are what BABYMETAL is really about. Megitsune is a very exciting song to play live show, and I highly recommend seeing the live version as well. You can feel the power of these women and the power of the audience.
    - Megitsune (LIVE "LEGEND 1997" [SU-METAL Seitan Sai] 2013)
    - Megitsune (LIVE "LEGEND 1999" [YUMETAL&MOAMETAL Seitan Sai] 2013)
    - Megitsune Live @ Budokan Black Night
    - BABYMETAL Megitsune at Glastonbury 2019
SUMETAL(vocal&dance) was born in 12/1997. YUIMETAL(scream&dance) was born in 06/1999. MOAMETAL was born in 07/1999. This music video was registered in 2013/06, so it is assumed that SU is 15 yrs old and YUI & MOA are 13 yrs old.
All of BABYMETAL's songs are quite different and all of them are representative of their music.
I hope you enjoy the variety of songs (all of them if possible).
All of the songs are great, but if I had to recommend them, the following songs might be a good place to start. Use it to help you choose your next song.
    - Road of Resistance - Live in Japan (OFFICIAL)
    - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL)
    - Rondo of Nightmare Live @ Budokan Black Night
    - Legend of 1997 Headbanger
    - Distortion (LIVE AT DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL 2018)
I hope you continue to enjoy your BABYMETAL.
    Put your Kitsune🦊 up!
    from Japan. (Translation by DeepL)
Megitsune is a song full of Japan. From here on down, if you're interested in Japan, take a look.
    Megitsune(女狐) is a female fox.
    me = 女 = female
    kitsune = 狐 = fox
There are many animals in Japan that are God's apostles. Foxes, Deer, Crows, Snakes... There is also a shrine dedicated to the fox god.

When Japanese people hear the word "Megitsune", they do not think of the animal fox. In Japan, it has long been said that foxes transform into humans and trick people. Foxes are considered to be bewitching, mysterious and cunning creatures. "Megitune" contains this meaning.
The lyrics say "はじけてドロンして(hajikete doron shite)", They're singing about a fox transforming with a leaf on its head. If you can picture the ninja disappearing with the smoke, it's about the same.
"コンコン(kon kon) is the animal sound of the fox in Japan.
The first instrument used is the 三味線(shamisen). The shamisen is a stringed instrument shaped like a guitar. The shamisen is a representative musical instrument of Japan. Since the shamisen was born 500 years ago, it is a new instrument among Japanese musical instruments.
    The drums are "太鼓(taiko)". It's a 小太鼓(kodaiko)(=small drum) because it's small. Or, it's called a 鼓(tuzumi).
"それそれ(sore sore)" and "わっしょい(wasshoi)" are the shouts that are used when carrying a omikoshi(お神輿=portable shrine) during a japanese traditional festival. PAPAYA is also omatsuri(festive) metal, but so is this song.
The song used in the breakdown is "さくら さくら(Sakura Sakura)" and it's about 150 years old. sakura means cherry blossom.
    th-cam.com/video/7fahl47XcPA/w-d-xo.html
A woman wearing a kimono and a fox mask is dancing in a 日本舞踊(nihon buyou=Japanese traditional dance).
The dagger planted in the microphone is a 懐刀(futokoro katana) or 懐剣(kai ken), a sword that women used to insert into the 帯(obi) of a 着物(kimono). 帯(obi) is sash belt.
This music video was shot at this shrine.
    - 阿佐ヶ谷 神明宮 (Asagaya Shinmeiguu) - shinmeiguu.com/keidai/
能楽殿(Nougakuden) is is the place to dance 能(Noh). 能(noh) is the oldest theatrical art in Japan with its origin goes back to 14th century. Incidentally, the 3 princesses said it was hot as a sauna in this place when they shot Megitsune.
