    My Babymetal reactions:
    • Babymetal
By far the most surprising reaction I've made on this channel, didn't expect any of this lol.
Babymetal is one of a kind for sure, now I understand why there are so many lovers and detractors of their music at the same time. It's great to check japanese big artists and see the contrast with western ones.
This is merely for review, analysis, breakdown and constructive criticism purpose, I do not claim the audiovisual product I reacted to as my own.

During the lockdown I discovered BABYMETAL and have been a devoted fan of this amazing group since. Actually it opened my eyes to the truly amazing Japanese music (and anime) scene. It is really HUGE! There is no country in the world with so many (and so thematically diverse) pop/rock formations, a lot of them female. So, welcome to the Metal Galaxy of BABYMETAL!

what's interesting about the japanese music scene as a whole is how much it's been influenced by the Vocaloid scene! BTW, even Gimme Chocolate was written by a Vocaloid music producer.

hahaha very good reaction, I would like to see you react more to babymetal since it is a group that has changed a lot in sound over the years. They were 11-13 years old at the beginning and now they are 23-25, so you can feel a change in their songs in each album.

BabyMetal began in 2010 there were three, Suzuka age 12 Moa Kikuchi (shown in the video) and Yui Mizuno (who left in 2018 due to health reasons). Both Moa and Yui were only 11 when the group began.
All three were friends and classmates who attended an idol school (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life the girls would learn and train to be idols and graduate at age 15 to move onto whatever entertainment path they chose.
Kei Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old and needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi believed that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers and dancers and a phenomenon was about to occur.
At first Amuse showed no interest and the girls had only financing from Kobayashi. They performed at strip malls and small venues using clothes borrowed from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues) and Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia).
Suggest reacting to BabyMetal LIVE as this is where they shine. They have over 50 LIVE songs/performances and each one is different. They are fearless exploring many genres and have the respect of the legends of Metal such as Metallica, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Judas Priest and more.
Suggest reacting to these for a start.

BabyMetal just performed on The First Take for the first time. The First Take is a You Tube Channel where famous artists are invited to do a LIVE unedited (and unaltered “no vocal effects”) raw performance in only ONE TAKE. If they make a mistake there is no going back and fixing it as mistakes and all will air.
They did a scaled down beautiful rendition of their new song Monochrome.
It is rumored that at their April 1, concert in Yokohama they will announce their third permanent member. The odds on favoring is Momoko Okasaka who has been performing most of the LIVE shows with Suzuka and Moa since 2019

Very well put! I second these recommendations! Babymetal is a very hard to be get introduced to with just a song or two.
Might I add Ijime Dame Zettai live at Sonisphere 2014 also.
Plenty of new material to dig into, but Gimme Chocolate and Megitsune, along with Road of Resistance live in Japan and IDZ live .. is a great snapshot in time early in their career.

This is some of the weirdest stuff I've ever seen. I don't get it. If you want to hear some real Japanese metal check out Lovebites. They are also a all female band and play old school thash metal and some plain old kick ass hard rock. The two guitarists I would put up againist any male guitarist today, they are that good. If you like old Iron Maiden, Megadeath, Metallica and Helloween then this is for you.

Babymetal is technically only the girls. They were originally three, but Yui left the group for health reasons a few years ago. The band in both of these video are only actors. Babymetal didn't have a budget for live musicians initially, but would eventually get support from the Kami band, which is a group of truly amazing session musicians. Take a look at _Road of Resistance_ (live in Japan), to see a proper live performance with the Kami band, which is the best way to enjoy Babymetal:

And to really hear how well Suzuka can really sing when she's not made to dance and compete with the loud instruments, take a peek at their appearance on The First Take, where they sing one of their latest songs, _Monochrome:_

Good double first reaction, welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊First thing - throw all your expectations, all your preconceptions and any thoughts that you might know who or what they are out of the window.
BABYMETAL are like no other band you will have seen or heard before. They are the three girls (just two since 2018 as one left for health reasons after a 12 month absence). In live shows they are supported by the Kami Band, some of the very best session musicians to be found in Japan, each one of them a world class musician and they can play anything - which is just as well since BABYMETAL have about 60 songs and each one is different to the last.
You will not see or hear the Kami Band in official videos (unless they were filmed at a live show since the end of 2013), they only play live shows, they do not record the studio versions.
The guys in white in the 'Megitsune' video were dancers, the guys in skeleton suits in the 'Gimme Chocolate video (called Babybones) were a fake band BABYMETAL had on stage with them in the early years before they had the money for a live band.
Despite appearances BABYMETAL have gained a huge following because of the music, the quality of the compositions, their live performances and their talents as singers and dancers.
Again lose your preconceptions - this is NOT some western female pop act who use their sexuality to sell records. BABYMETAL are not and have never been sexualised in any way whatsoever. For a start they were only 12 and 11 when they started in 2010, so anything like that would have been weird and creepy. You can lose all those thoughts (you did hint at them a couple of times - you were very much mistaken).
    - Their costumes cover them from neck to toe - no exposed flesh.
    - They have no dubious or suggestive dance moves in their choreo - no grabbing crotches, no spread legs, no slut drops. Their choreo is bespoke for every song and serves two real purposes (they are not just mincing round to give creeps something to watch like most acts with dancers) - it helps to interpret the song for those of us who do not speak Japanese and it is designed to lead the audience and to get everybody involved and joining in, becoming part of the show.
    - They have no dubious or suggestive lyrics in their songs - everything they have ever done was entirely age appropriate.
They were formed around the vocal talents and stage presence of the lead singer, Su-metal. Yuimetal and Moametal are her support, both of them also very talented singers and dancers.

    Welcome to the Foxhole.🦊🤘
Nice double reaction to start with your BM journey, is always nice to see someone totally new on this and get it from the get go. They're about to released the new album along with more live shows and upcoming live tour all over the world, the new sound is more mature for obvious reasons, they're not younger anymore but they still performing hits like this when performing live.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal (kawaii means cute), mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms, they are:
    *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25.
    *MoaMetal* scream and dance, 23.
*YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018.
    None of them are related.
This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the _shamizen_ a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
To say it right you can use a translator app, but it reads something like "meh- git - su - neh". Song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you, they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving.
Japanese friends told that "megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal (the lead singer) is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying _"maidens shouldn't be understimated",_ that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why you will hear her doing sound check with this song before live concerts.
The arranger of this song took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drums section.
The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary:
The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘
Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀
This Gimme Chocolate isn't actually live version, is studio album version over a live performance which was partially live only on the vocals and choreography with backing track sound. They have their own band called Kami Band introduced later on that same show and after that Kami Band become regular at live performance.
They're singing just about wanting some chocolate but worried about weight just like any other normal girl. Unlike Megitsune this time the lyrics isn't so deep, they used to have songs like this just to have fun and party.
    Next suggestion:
    - "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" live at Legend 1997 (2013, you can find this a "Gans Tomas" channel or "abr metal") or Legend I (2012).
    See you next time.🦊🤘🔥

Good double reaction and analysis, thanks!
Yes, they are visually and musically unlike anything else. And yes they do take risks. The whole concert was the "crazy" idea of one man Kei Kobayashi aka Kobametal, their producer. He came up with the idea after seeing Su-metal perform with her former girl band and he thought she was perfect for leading a metal band because of her surprisingly strong vocals and stage presence.
About their age and so... they were 11 and 12 when they started in 2010. So, don't worry about that. Their management, choreographers, their staff and all the people related has always been respectful to them and their costumes or outfits reflects that respect. Otherwise I promise I would not be here. They are called "team BABYMETAL" for a reason. There is nothing cringe worthy about them at least on their side or on the vast majority of the fandom.
"Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs and their most played song (244 times and counting). It was released on June 2013
The word "Megitsune" = "me" + "kitsune" which means female + fox so, a vixen. Hence the "kitsune" masks everywhere.
In the Japanese tradition the kitsune is an entity which is able to transfigure into a human form, mainly into the form of a young lady, with the objective to deceive men and cause them pain. So they sing that they aren't kitsunes but megitsunes, "pure-hearted maiden-like female foxes".
That breakdown hits hard and besides the pig squeals, the melody is surprisingly from a Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms).
"Gimme Chocolate" is "just" a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being worried about weight. But, those instrumentals are very, very metal. Because of that huge contrast, the song was intended to produce the bigger WTF reaction possible... so it looks like mission accomplished. This music video went viral in 2014 and helped them a lot to get recognized worldwide.
Since these two videos are official music videos you didn't see or hear their live band (Kami Band) here. So I'd like to suggest you an actual live performance: "Headbanger" (Live Legend 1997): th-cam.com/video/QEsOaMbNFww/w-d-xo.html
    Until next time!

I am a musician myself, play 6, 7 and 12 string guitars, 4, 5 and 6 string basses (not to mention stand up), mandolin, keyboards, piano and Tuba, I sing, write, arrange, produce, engineer and have been playing since I was 6, started my first band at 14 and have thousands of hours onstage. I only relate this to emphasize that I KNOW music. I have lived, ate and breathed hard rock and metal for over 40 years and I can say without a doubt that BABYMETAL is, hands down, my favorite band ever. They literally hold the top 40 places in my 100 favorite songs list, and its because every single moment of instrumental composition and performance, choreography, vocals and concept are as flawless as a human can achieve, and in concert there are dozens of key members of the production team achieving that level of impossible perfection.

Welcome to the Foxhole. I'm glad you enjoyed "Megitsune".
Babymetal were formed in 2010 by a producer at the Amuse talent agency called Kei Kobayashi as a subgroup of the school themed J-pop idol group Sakura Gakuin. They were so successful that in 2013 they were spun off and have become a metal group that can fill major international stadiums. The lead singer is Suzuka Nakamoto and the backing singers and dancers in the video are Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi, they are not related. FYI this video was made in 2013, so Su is 15 and Moa and Yui are almost 14.
Megitsune, or vixen, is one of BM's female empowerment songs. Its theme is female fortitude and that women should never be underestimated and I think the song is saying that about BM themselves as well as about every woman. The band here are dancers just miming, but the live concert performances with BM's backing band, The Kami Band, are even better.
The opening has a very traditional tone by setting it in a Shinto shrine and using the classic Japanese instruments, but then Japanese tradition is challenged as the band kicks in, Yui and Moa pull on Su's obi to free her and BM go into an energetic high leg lift dance. That dance contrasts with the interpretation of the traditional restrained dance (nihon buyo) in the break down.
The breakdown is the traditional song "Sakura, Sakura" (Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom), but BM even subvert that and Su sings "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox). This also might be an expression of BM moving away from their parent idol group, Sakura Gakuin or Cherry Blossom Academy.
In Japan the fox is seen as a clever shape shifter and the lyrics liken women to female foxes in the way they have to change themselves to please others or to hide their true feelings. In the dance BM mime wearing a mask and also putting on make up as another way to hide themselves. But the strength of women is emphasized and the expression of this peaks when Su shouts:
"Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" and pulls a knife from her microphone.
The phrase is translated as "Maidens shouldn’t be underestimated" (credit Du-metal), although that is a polite interpretation. It's also used in a famous Japanese gangster film called Onimasa and is translated there as " don't you sh*t with me". Some of BM's lyrics can be quite shocking to Japanese audiences and native speakers say that gets lost on non-Japanese speakers who have to experience Babymetal's lyrics through the distorting prism of translation.
Next I recommend something with BM's live backing band, the Kami Band, just search on.
"Road of Resistance - Live in Japan" and "Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of Metal Gods Intro".

Some people think this song is about girls liking chocolate. But that's only half of the message. They are also worried about gaining weight. The wa ta ta ta ta and la la la la la, with zikkyun and dokkyun is sang while the girls are shooting finger guns. Zikkyun and dokkyun are japanese ricochet sounds. The lyrics and choreography describe a young girl evading a machine gun that shoots bullets of fat at her after she ests some chockolate.

Hey Jhulian. First time seeing your channel. Just going to say it, but you're SOOOO close to falling into what we call the Foxhole. You're right at the precipice where you think it's weird, but good. You already like the main vocalist, and the two dancers you're unsure about, but wherever the camera focuses on them you always have a huge smile on your face, so I'd say subconsciously you like them and don't even realize it yet. Anyhow, I'd highly recommend doing Road of Resistance Live in Japan next. And if you'd like just a solo with just the main singer (her stage name is Su-Metal), then I'd also recommend Rondo of Nightmare with mischief of gods intro. Pretty sure you're going to like both of those. Gimmie Chocolate is normally a song people recommend when they want to watch the shock value. It isn't really a serious song. It's more a song Babymetal does just for fun. Anyhow, good reactions, hope to see you do more!

Gimme Chocolate went viral for Babymetal back in 2014. It's about liking chocolate, so not very deep, and is one of their most gimmicky songs - many people also have the cringe reaction to Moa's and Yui's "Yata Yata" parts. They are performing to a recorded backing track and the "band" is just miming, but later on in the concert their live backing band, called The Kami Band, joins them on stage to signify their transformation from a J-pop idol group to a full on headlining metal act. The concert was Legend 1997 and was for Su's (the lead singer) 16th birthday as well.

Late to the party, but you might appreciate...the Japanese-sounding breakidown you noted is actually a traditional Japanese song, "Sakura Sakura" about cherry blossoms in the spring. Every Japanese in the world knows it. BABYMETAL have approprated the melody for their own lyrics about women being female foxes.

Hahahaha nice reaction! Babymetal was created in 2010 as a sub-unit of the jpop idol group Sakura Gakuin when Su (the lead singer) was 12 and Yui and Moa (officially scream and dance aka hyping the crowd, choreography, and backup vocals) were 11. Su is now 25 and Moa is 23. Yui sadly left the band in 2018 after a year of absence due to undisclosed health reasons. They are backed up by a group of the best Japanese session musicians known as the Kami band.
Babymetal created their own genre called kawaii (cute) metal, that mixes cute elements of all sorts with metal. They don’t fit in any box and mix all sorts of music styles together with metal. Their creativity has seriously no boundaries.
“Gimme chocolate” went viral on TH-cam in 2014 and made them known worldwide but “Megitsune” is one of their classics and often tops fan polls.
Live is where they really shine and as you’ve seen in the “Gimme chocolate” video, their shows are wild in any aspect.
Next “Karate” live at Download 2016 or “Ijime Dame Zetaii” live at Sonisphere 2014 please :) ❤🤘🦊🔥

While I suppose it's almost become tradition to react to Giveme Chocolate. Given it's what most people were first exposed to. However, is it really fair to continue to do so? Given the fact it's 10+ years old now.
This is a far better first reaction & one which I much prefer over Giveme Chocolate personally! 🍫 Su-Metal and Moa are in their early 20s now. Preparing for what now is their 4th Album.
    ________________________________________________
Which is already looking to be one of their best to date. It's great to have such objective reactions still but this is far from their best work. I guess we want others to experience what we did.
A WTF did I just witness moment I guess lol. Although that can work for or against them now given how f*** superior both of them are now in just about every way possible.
The Kami Band is great but to ride these ladies off as an supporting act as some still do would be a huge mistake. They are as professional and ligit as they come.
    _______________________________________________
Which I even may have underestimated now given their recent Monochrome piano version performance which is nothing short of brilliant. All I can say is welcome to the Foxhole my friend!
You are in for one hell of a journey. May I suggest next Rondo Of Nightmare Mischiefs Of Metal Gods at Budokan Live (Black Night).
It's a masterclass performance & Su-Metal was only 16 at the time. New album drops in 4 days followed by a European tour with Sabaton in April. 🤘🦊💕

Since you are a guitarist, would you like to have a closer look to what their supporting musicians are able to do?
To keep this style, "Catch me if you can" live at Budokan, with Kami intro
Or if you want something more serious, "Rondo of Nightmare" with Mischief of metal gods intro, live at Budokan
They are very aware of the "WTF" factor of Gimme Chocolate, and that's intentional :D

    Megitsune:-
"Megitsune" (メギツネ, "Vixen") is the second major label single by the Japanese kawaii metal band Babymetal. It was released in Japan on June 19, 2013 as the fifth single from the album Babymetal. It is also the first single released independently from the idol group Sakura Gakuin.
The single was first announced for a June release on April 1, 2013. The single was released in four versions: a standard edition and three limited editions. The "Ki", "Tsu", and "Ne" (Kitsune means "fox" in Japanese) limited editions included single artwork focused on Nakamoto, Mizuno, and Kikuchi respectively, and their included DVDs feature footage of two songs from each of the live performances from Live: Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse. Additionally, the single included a chance to contain a ticket to the premium event Kitsune Festival at Meguro Rock May Kan on July 14, 2013.
To promote the release, the band was featured in the June issue of Marquee and on the cover of the July issue of Hedoban, in addition to collaborating with Tower Records for the 34th rendition of the event No Music, No Idol?.
    Babymetal concert chronology:-
•Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (2013)
    •Babymetal World Tour 2014 (2014).
The Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (BABYMETAL DEATH MATCH TOUR 2013 -五月革命-, Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013 -Gogatsu Kakumei-) was a promotional concert tour by Babymetal, occurring in conjunction with the promotion of "Megitsune". The band performed four shows, with two on the final tour date, at the same venue. Customers who purchased tickets to the tour could receive an exclusive edition of the single, with a remix by Yuyoyuppe, under the name DJ'Tekina//Something.
According to Mizuno, the tour was designed to be a "training tour". During each of the four shows the three members wore stage costumes for the eras of "Doki Doki ☆ Morning" (which had become nostalgically small for them), "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!", and "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", respectively, with the final show premiering new costumes for "Megitsune".
The heaviest Babymetal breakdown between 'Iine' and 'Megitsune'. I'll give a slight edge to 'Megitsune' because that Sakura Sakura on top of that breakdown is the stuff of nightmares.

    Gimme Chocolate:-
Old school Thrash Metal. Combinations of Metallica "Fight Fire With Fire" and Slayer "Raining Blood". Heaviest, Brutal song about Chocolate. React to the song on late night show with Stephen Colbert. Old school metalheads can appreciate the metal, younger audience can appreciate the J Pop with a very catchy chorus.
    Gimme Chocolate!!:-
"Gimme Chocolate!!" (ギミチョコ!!, Gimi Choko!!) is a song by the Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal from their self-titled debut album. Though it was not released as a single in Japan, the song became an international success, with its music video gaining over 143 million views on TH-cam. 18:30 I use this song and “distortion” as a finale for planks or “finisher” for runs. Sometimes you need that consistent pace or sudden intensity to focus on when you’re at the end of your rope and need just a few more reps or minutes
