His mother abandoned him at the age of 3 and the song is about his hope she might return to develop a relationship with him, sadly she never did. The video was filmed in Whitby, with the Abbey as the backdrop.

Hucknall wrote this song in his bedroom at his father's house when he was 17. The inspiration for the song came from a teacher at the Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall studied fine art. The instructor suggested that the best paintings are created when the artist is in a state of unconscious creation, and Hucknall attempted to use this approach in his songwriting. One of my favourite songs ever ❤

I think what you might be trying to describe is a "soulfulness" in his voice. It`s the difference between singing the notes on the page and deeply feeling the song in a heartfelt way.

Another side of this is, I as a parent had a son, that I loved very much. I remember the first time I heard this song, me, him, and his sister were in a truck, driving down the interstate. I remember looking at them and thinking, I had the whole world right there with me at that moment. He grew up and my son and I worked together. At age 43, I found him in one of my buildings on a Saturday morning. There is nothing on this earth, that I know how to describe what goes through you at that moment. This song has a very special meaning for me, it always takes me back to that special moment in time. We are there together forever.

Mick Hucknell wrote this song at the age of 17. From what I have gathered he was abandoned by his mother so I suppose there is a degree of truth in some of the lyrics. He did a "jazzy" version of this song many years later that I like even more than this version. He has a tremendous voice and a range that is really something. He is one of those singers that can make you smile or bring you to tears..... sometimes in the same song.

I think what he meant by holding on is in he’s holding on, waiting for things to get better. Because I interpret holding back the years as in he’s trying to hold back all the pain of what happened and he keeps trying to hold onto living now cause things haunted him. At least that was my interpretation
    PS It was Ireland.

A beautiful voice, if you see the live versions there is no difference between this and live. I saw Mick Hucknall on telly being interviewed at a football (soccer) match with his favourite football team, Manchester United and the guy was so knowledgeable of the game, he really could become a football pundit. Keep up the good work ladies x

I saw Simply Red in concert last year. Great concert, just hit after hit after hit.
In the crowd coming out of the O2 afterwards someone was moaning (someone's always complaining: you could give them a million pounds and they'd ask for two): "He's put on some weight, hasn't he?"
Well, maybe he has but after all it was 37 years since Picture Book. The voice was still fantastic.
My favourite song has always been 'Money's Too Tight To Mention', which was on the same album but is very different. The version he sings now is toned down (references to Reaganomics probably go over people's heads these days) but the original is vicious - and still rings true today. 'Did the earth move for you, Nancy?'

I can think back over the years and remember a lot of songs that I liked, yet only a handful or so of artists that I thought were so exceptional that were "next level". In order: The Bee Gees (too many songs to mention), Simply Red, (Holding Back the Years), Tears for Fears and several of their 80's songs, Phil Collins (In the Air Tonight), Boston (More Than a Feeling), Art Garfunkel (I Only Have Eyes For You).
Those are top for me. Other artists, as I said, had great songs too...but those songs will forever stand out as the most special.

Trumpet in the song is playing with a mute on but in the video it is not muted at all. Trumpet play might have been really playing (in the video) but that was not what was used for the recording. Also his fingers did not match to the notes being played. (just FYI. There are a lot of music videos of dancers or whomever are supposed to be playing an instrument but have no clue. bugs real musicians to see it).

Duty), and mom busy raising 4 kids, when with all honesty could barely raise two, I being the oldest spent much of my youth trying to be an Adult, for example (1 of many), cleaning up after sick siblings when I was only a little older, and sometimes ill, myself.
