His father had stage 4 kidney disease and they couldn't find a match for a transplant . He wrote the song about facing his fathers mortality and saying to him how he felt at that time . Luckily they found a relative who was compatible and received the transplant . Very powerful song . Still gets to me every time I hear it .

Apparently it was a distant cousin who saw/heard this song so it prompted them to reach out to James & family. The result was a (to date) successful transplant, so what an amazing example of how music reaches out and touches so many people.

I've said it before and it is still true. At approximately 4:00 of your video, James sings "you can feel my hand, on your arm" - yet it is his Dad who puts his hand on James' arm. And does it again at the very end of the song. Although the song is about the son comforting the father, the father is still comforting the son. This gets me, every time!

Love this song and what's it about. I have gone through stage 5 kidney disease. I was very close to death. I had to get a kidney from a deceased person. My sister had kidney transplant 6 years ago and is fine now. My mother had one 9 years ago but sadly didn't work. She passed away now. It's a horrible thing to have. I got my one 3 year's now and feeling great. But every day i think about the person who sadly died. And they give me other chance of a better life.

Yes, it was his father, Charles. The thing to remember is that James and his dad are upper class (posh) hence why you hear the poshness of his voice coming through. Both of them previously served in the British Army as officers. James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. James served in the Kosovo war (in the Balkans) in '99, and the line, "we are just two grown men saying goodbye" is what James said to his dad as he was being shipped off. Being they are upper class, they tend to be very stoic, hence why by the end James as tears streaming down his cheeks, his dad places his hand on his arm. This is very typical behaviour of the upper class.
After this record was released, James had ALL proceeds go to a British charity; Help For Heroes, which caters to the veterans.

That is his father, Charles, in the Video. This was recorded before his father had a Kidney Transplant in January 2020, which was only months after he recorded this Song. It was to show his love & support for his father in the best way he knew how. His father came through the surgery & is living well with James Mother. His cousin (Also Charles Blount), was a compatible match. I'm a 63 year old married Aussie bloke & it brings tears to my eyes. I lost my mother to Kidney Failure, so it's close to home. Fabulous song, awesome singer & brilliant performance.

The line 'You're my your son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye' was first spoken between them when they parted as James left for frontline (often ahead of the frontline) service in Bosnia, in 1999. James spent six years serving in the British Army, as a Troop Commander in an Armoured Recce Regt. He served with the Blues & Royals in Bosnia and has written other songs about the horrors he saw there. His father had been similarly a cavalry officer, before being made Colonel of the Army Air Corps.

I have heard everyone in the room as the video was being done was crying except his dad who said “why’s everyone crying I’m still here” or something to the effect. Children should give the best for their parents. But sometimes even that is still not quite comparable to the love parents have for their children. I have lost my father. And before closing our eyes, we looked at each other, I waved my hand slowly at him and said, goodbye, pap.. his eyes were still looking at me then slowly closed and didn't open again. For a moment I just realized the meaning of that look, maybe my father wants to talk. But the oxygen mask is attached to his mouth. Until now I always feel guilty and sorry for that.
Ok, to be honest I have never heard of this song though. And the first time I found out was when Cakra Khan covered it. He sings it is also dedicated to his deceased father.

James Blunt is synonymous with weepies.
"You're Beautiful".......fantasizing about a relationship that can never be, and ends with suicide.
"Carry You Home".......death. The lyrics are rather cryptic, but they suggest a female sex worker who tries to shed her past. On the other hand, the video shows the personal effects and final letter of a fallen WWI soldier being delivered to his wife by a comrade who, in essence......carried him home.
"Goodbye My Lover"......self-explanatory; a consummate breakup song.
"Same Mistake"........self-reproach and acknowledgement of one's own foibles and weaknesses.

Women don't get it. A father, son and a son who has a son, gets hit both in memory and a future episode for them. Big tough men will buckle if in a certain category.

Great reaction again. James Blunt had a song called "You Beautiful". The official video is absolutely incredible and emotional. Thanks!

James Blunt saw action in the Balkans as a captain in the guards. Another poignant song is ‘carry you home’ which touched on one of the outcomes of his duties as a commanding officer.

Between the first and second verse when he looks down you can see him choking back a sob…watch his body language…then add his tears and there’s no escape from hiding your tears…

28 seconds in: "So I think it'll be really fun..." Oh dear, you have no idea what's coming, where's your box of tissues! Such an emotional song! Gets me every time. James Blunt is such a great storyteller but this one was no story, just hard reality at facing the impending loss of his father.
Next up for you to react to is his song "The Greatest": th-cam.com/video/0ggg_iCrE6I/w-d-xo.html
Oh, and James Blunt is a hero who saved us from WW3 by refusing the follow the orders of a too gung-ho general in the Kosovo War in the 90's. He has personally seen some horrible things in war and wrote a song about the events: "No Bravery": th-cam.com/video/gh41Wxez9PE/w-d-xo.html

James thought it was a shame to write a eulogy for someone and then for them not to hear it. He said they did this five times, twice with his father. But it's a very powerful song and what a way to say goodbye, even if it wasn't. James called his father 'a good looking dude' - I'll give him that.

No need to hold it back 'Baby Gap' I'm 64 and every time -every time I tear up! Absolutely amazing performance, all in one take(the video crew asked if he needed to stop but he wanted to do it in one take to really get the feel) and yeah it's about his dad who he thought was going to die from kidney disease, thankfully a donor was found! Hit's hard also as I've been diagnosed with chronic kidney failure too

Another great song to react to is Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. It’s based on a true event (the anniversary of which is coming up), and imo it’s one of the most hauntingly powerful songs ever written.
