- On this PIO Vlog we take viewers into the storm damage after an EF-1 tornado tore through Highlands Ranch. We also respond to working structures, give viewers behind the scenes look at emergency vehicle driver training, provide apparatus updates, and of course, patch shout outs!

Shortly after the tornado passed, I walked outside to just sirens and things from branches, fences, and trees on the ground. Great to have PIOs here to help us recognize the work South Metro puts into their responses.

Love the video. We just had a very severe thunderstorm come through last night in Georgia and I was listening to dispatch on my radio (I'm a volunteer with Alpharetta Fire Corps which is a similar program to Arapahoe Rescue Patrol but for adults) and it was the first time I've ever personally heard us have to prioritize calls in the 3 years I've been doing it (Granted I'm not always listening during storms). It was tree blocking road after tree blocking road for about 1.5hrs. Stay safe Brothers and Sisters.

Great video, working for a local tree service in the weeks following the tornado has been absolutely crazy, long days, weekends, you name it, we were out there. Over 16,000 tree failures from the Tornado/straight line wind event. Uprootings, a lot of co dominant stem failures. Had a 70ft cottonwood failure, 3 foot break point 5ft base not including root flare. Gonna be cleaning up probably for another month.

I remember a small tornado in 2008. Most of the dealerships along Wadsworth had significant hail damage to their outdoor inventory. Anyhoo, good video!

WOW!!!!! Crazy Weather. The Chicagoland area was hit by tornadoes recently including Countryside and Hodgkins Illinois which are near my hometown of Willow Springs Illinois. Fireworks are dangerous. :(
I remember in Kansas we have small towns with county fire departments that hit by tornados or get damaged by the wind.

Thanks Mark! The training tiller will be mostly used on at the training facility but it will probably make some appearances on the streets from time to time, also.

What happened to the weekly uploads I love watching and listening to pulse point. I would love more videos of them fighting fires if you could record what happens once you get there. Also how do you guys manage all these calls at once. What is the policy for when u are so overwhelmed how do you determine the priority and what happens if there not high priority. Most stressful part of my EMT training was taking command of an MCI scenario. That was a headache without driving while memorizing the call and street signs. 😂
Nice coverage. Please continue to promote the law of "traffic lights with no power are 4 way stops!" So many times I see that where the primary busy street, people still go right through and assume right of way

Thank you so much! The golf cart experienced some type of mechanical failure minutes after being driven by the maintenance team. They parked it in the driveway, went inside to do some work and it caught fire shortly after that.

The storm yesterday to me posting this comment spawned multiple tornados in Kansas and Colorado, I am an EMT in Kiowa and Greeley County and we had tornados in Scott City, Sharon Springs, tordado watches all over, Prowers County had a tornado warning even. I was actually in my sisters garage when the storm passed through so I got soaked but not hurt. Sadly there were a few houses destroyed.
It has been an unusually active severe weather season along the Colorado Front Range. Thankfully we don't have to worry about the higher end EF and nighttime tornadoes here, like you regularly face in Kansas. Scary stuff.

What radar app do you use? that looked like Radar Omega.... I've got that one, as well as Storm Shield as My primary, which I use to keep a general eye on friends/family across the US....
Radar Scope is what I showed in the video, but I also have Radar Omega, Storm Shield and a few other weather apps that I regularly reference. Can never have enough intel!

Lithium-Ion Batteries are causing all kinds of issues lately. Fire Crews need additional training on fighting these types of fires. "NO WATER".

Yes, I have a 2020 Ford Expedition now and since a few people have asked for it, I'll make a Fleet Friday for it. Training Bureau didn't mention adding emergent driving to the EVOC course, we only activated the warning lights when a vehicle on the course stopped to reset cones.

I watch a lot of your videos I am a first responder as an emt on an ambulance working on getting my fire certifications. I watched a video were you said that support staff go to some stuff if needed. how come if there's calls staking and being over loaded how come support staff can't respond to some of the calls and help the over load

When I moved to Littleton from my home state out east, my first experience as I was driving in with my car full of all my possessions was a bad storm with flooding, hail and tornado warnings. Was definitely not something I was prepared for. 😂

Hey Eric, Do you have any patches from Wastern Washington? I'm just curious if you have any from that area. I live in a town called "Bonney Lake" in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Western Washington. We have smaller departments in my area that aren't as big as SMFR. The departments in my area can be found Pulsepoint.
I don't think we have any patches from that region, and definitely not from Bonney Lake. Thanks for sharing, we always enjoy learning about other FDs and PulsePoint is a great way to do that.

Glad the tornado damage was minor. Tornadoes are common here in the midwest but thankfully they haven't hit the city here in almost 40 years.
We are, too! Hopefully your city will continue to stay out of the tornado crosshairs.
Erik, did you get a new vehicle? Didn't think your PIO Truck had an Interior light bar.

I am interested in knowing if all fire departments have designated PIO's.
I am not sure our area seems to have one as it usually seems to be a captain or our premier who deliver updates. We have had forest fires this year and this week we just had major flooding with even emergency apparatus getting stuck while trying to drive through flooded areas. I can see the importance of having a PIO for sure as I haven't felt as well informed about the things going on.
The PIO role is part of the incident command structure and always filled at major incidents, sometimes by a fire / police chief or sheriff. Most medium to large size fire departments do have career communications staff with designated PIO's. South Metro is among the few that have a TH-cam channel featuring vlogs hosted by PIO's.

Eric will we see more storm chasing from you? Also would be cool to see a video on what the fire department does during a tornado warning. IE do you have to reposition the vehicles that kind of thing
I'll start including more severe weather related activities in our vlogs. If we have a damaging hail threat, vehicles will be moved inside whenever possible. During the tornado warnings anyone not involved in emergency response will go to an interior room away from windows to shelter.

Since PIO's respond to incidents that have high community and media interest, I knew we would end up in the damage area eventually anyway. Since I take vacation time every year to chase storms, it was a good opportunity to provide a rare look into severe weather operations.

One of these days on your vlog, can you talk about your auto aid and mutual aid with departments around SMFR? Can SMFR dispatch tone those departments like West Metro and Aurora for calls or does the dispatcher have to call them and request them to respond? Just curious since you see many responses helping SMFR, and seeing the call in Pulse Point. Thanks in advance
Thanks for your interest and suggestion! SMFR has CAD to CAD capability with West Metro, both fire districts can automatically dispatch automatic aid resources and share MDC data. Currently, SMFR does not share that capability with any of the other neighboring fire districts. Auto and mutual aid requests are phoned in by the dispatch centers, they check the status of the unit(s) needed and dispatch them if they're available.
What made your department decide to get tiller trucks? Will it be a tiller quint, or not have any on board water? I’ve also noticed all your trucks are housed by themselves, or with an ambulance. Will south metro ever have dual housed stations(engine and a truck)?
One of the big reasons SMFR is purchasing a Tiller, which will have a 300 gallon water tank, pump and attack lines, is combine the equipment from the Heavy Rescue with the Ladder Company. This will allow Tiller 34 to respond as an aerial and or heavy rescue as needed without the need to cross-staff a specialty apparatus. Both Tower 34 and Rescue 34 were due for replacement in the next couple years so there's a cost savings in purchasing only one apparatus instead of two.

I currently live in a city that seems a little spoiled with their budget. All engines and trucks have 4 man crews. They have a fully staffed heavy rescue unit. And a fully staffed hazmat/CBRNE unit. Plus all their 2 man rescue units(paramedic ambulances). Wish all departments could have such big budgets!

Do SM PIO’s often run code 3 for calls? Or is it rare? Is this something that SMFR allows y’all to do?
Staff Chiefs, additional Safety Officers, Fire Investigators, Incident Dispatchers, and PIO's don't respond emergent very often, but policy does allow it. Those units will initially respond non-emergent unless upgraded by Incident Commander/Officer, or the incident warrants and justifies their immediate/emergent response or involvement. Most commonly emergency lighting/sirens are used when approaching a closed road or traveling through an incident scene.

SMFR allows support personnel which include Incident Dispatch Team, Fire Investigators and PIO's to respond emergent if the incident warrants or justifies it, or if the incident command wants their expertise on scene in an emergent manner. Usually the extent of activating lights and sirens is just to get on scene when traffic is stopped due to a roadblock, like University Blvd. during the house fire in this video.

"A confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado" is not something I thought I would hear while out storm chasing that day.
Right!? When I heard that statement I was southeast of the storm and the tornado was rain wrapped. Our Douglas County meteorologist shared that Reed Timmer made the tornado report and it certainly heightened the reality of the situation for me. - Eric
Does the PIO help with firefighting or anything? I wonder why they go to calls with code 3. Never seen anything like that here in Holland as a volunteer
At South Metro, support personnel including Incident Dispatchers, Fire Investigators and Public Information Officers have vehicles that are code 3 capable. By policy, those resources respond non-emergent unless their immediate involvement justifies an emergent response, or the incident commander requests an emergent response. Support staff almost always respond non-emergent but routinely activate their lights/sirens when accessing controlled scenes. In this video example, an emergent mode was used to follow an Engine Company through a closed intersection, rather than sit in traffic just outside the scene for an extended time while traffic was diverted.

Colorado averages 40 tornadoes per year. Most occur east of the Denver Metro area and Interstate 25 in less populated areas.

Thank you for all of your suggestions! We do have more Day in the Life videos and Fire Medics planned. The airport trucks are still the newest in-service vehicles, Brush 33 and Brush 43 will probably be the next ones.
what does PIO mean like what do they do ?
PIO is short for Public Information Officer. The job includes being a spokesperson for the organization which includes television, radio and print interviews, social media content creation and management (including TH-cam) and responding to major incidents that occur.
