  • On this VLog we follow South Metro Firefighters to a 2nd Alarm town home fire in Lone Tree and watch them battle the flames with combined views from a news helicopter and helmet cams. Follow along as SMFR responds to a trench rescue, a horse rescue, a submerged vehicle and a bear rescue! Assistant Chief of Operations Jon Adams also selects the first location for the Station Saturday video series.

    That trench scene happened in my town about four of five (4-5) years ago, they were working on a city street, the trench collapsed on top of three men. My father was one of the first on scene, he was a firefighter for the city at the time, 2 fatalities, and I think the third person died in the hospital. If you're still here, these were the units on scene: Hays Kansas Fire department: ladder 1 and 2, engines 1,2,3, utility 312, 313, special operations trailer of Hays fire and Ellis County fire, Car 300, 301, 302. Ellis County Rural Fire department Company 5, and maybe company 6, Hays Police Department, Ellis County Sheriff's Department, Kansas state Highway Patrol, there may have been more, but that is all I can recall.

    Thank you for sharing these wonderful videos. You should be proud of the extraordinary work of SMFR. In watching your vlogs, I am constantly impressed by your professional communications and ability to expand and control the ICS model. I was wondering if your incident recordings are made public, for training purposes. I could image that there are fire departments and other emergency response organizations throughout the country and the world who could gain valuable knowledge from simply listening to your responses and the continually impressive command and control that your leadership team has on the fire ground. Thanks in advance for any information.

    That happened to my family 10+ years ago. My dad said it was like 10-12 at night, and someone stopped, banging on our door, yelling that our garage was on fire. The guy grabbed our hose and started spraying the garage while my dad called the fire department. Garage is still standing today, by 3 walls. Glad it was on the other side of the driveway so our house and second garage was okay,

    How about doing a few videos on the newest apparatus being delivered? Maybe start with how your department decides on what type of unit to purchase, if you go out to bid, or just purchase through one manufacturer, how long your units stay on front line service before replacement, and right up through putting them in service. I’ve been involved in this 5 different times during my career and would enjoy seeing your companies process. I’m sure you have certain years of service before units are put into reserve. Things change all the time especially now with technology, so it’s nice having a department that seems to keep up with that. Perfect example is it looks like most of your newer engines and tower ladders are purchases through Pierce Mfg, no doubt either the best manufacturer in the fire service, or at worst one of the top 3, they’ve come out with that new tower ladder design that has really become popular, I’m sure you’ve seen it and I was wondering if your ordering any in the near future. Also, how often do you replace rescue units? Just things like that are interesting and just a few ideas on new videos that should be very interesting to many of us. Hope I’m not wasting your time, you both do a great job keeping us informed on your department and please keep these videos coming. Thanks again.

  • @Austin326
    @Austin326 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a random question, when you guys receive a box alarm call do use MABAS or is that an Illinois or Midwest thing? So essentially regardless of “district” you have multiple districts automatically assigned through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. I’m just trying to understand if this is how everyone does it or if it’s all different systems.

    • @Spitfire8520
      @Spitfire8520 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      MABAS is largely a Midwest thing centered around Illinois and states that surround it. Box cards and alarms do not exist in Colorado, but a lot of agencies in Colorado participate in automatic aid agreements so the closest units are automatically requested. The specific units are determined through that agency's CAD system and if that automatic aid unit is not available, the CAD will determine the next closest unit available for the call. In South Metro's case, they have full automatic aid agreements with most agencies that surround them with the exception of their northern neighbor who does not participate in automatic aid agreements of any kind and their northeastern neighbor that provides limited automatic aid to certain predetermined areas. As I understand for MABAS, the box cards dictate that an agency shall provide a specific kind of apparatus, but other than that it is up to the full discretion of that agency to determine where it may come from within that agency's district so there might be a case where the unit might be coming from the far side of the district. Outside of the automatic aid agreements, there are standard mutual aid requests that require specific request and approval by the agencies involved. Most agencies are really good about immediately granting requests, although it is not perfect as some agencies have a lot of red tape and can sometimes drag their feet.
