@@709mash you all like Mass Effect Legendary Edition we are now adding new DLCs for each Mass Effect game and each one will cost $20 each. Then everyone shovels up $60-$100.
Compared to the cycle we play in, the Protheans weren't defeated swiftly! They hung on for decades (if not centuries!), while the Reapers culled world after world, but were slowed down by Protheans fighting back!
In our defense, our cycle hadn’t even properly unified. The Protheans had the advantage of completely inviting their galaxy, but ours was not until the very end, and even then only barely.
No mention of the fact that the Protheans were responsible for the major delay in the Reapers return by sabotaging the signal that controlled the keepers ?
Very nice breakdown of the Mass Effect story. You did miss one thing that is vitally important about the Reapers. By giving us (organic life) the Mass Relays it enabled them to control our path technologically. This ensures they know how to counter any defensive measures a species may try against them....
And since the mass relays where the technological breakthrought for every single race in the galaxy, it also guaranteed the Reapers something to harvest every 50,000 years lol
I wonder if they'll be a decision to explore a Mass Effect spin-off during the Prothean cycle, fleshing out the possibilities we've learnt so far to be fleshed out and give us further insight to the races of that cycle? Or if they leave it as it is; thinking that would defeat the purpose of the cycle of extinction leaving so little evidence behind that it'd weaken the mysteries of the galaxy? Either way, the Prothean empire sounds interesting in how it evolved and died.
Yes, yes Gamespot, YES. that Legendary edition is coming in hot. AND i just got my PS5 so whatever benefits they are planning for that machine will impact my first time through. I consider the Mass Effect Trilogy the pinnacle of my gaming experience. Second only to Witcher 3. So good.
I always thought that the Protheans were loosely based on the Eldar from Warhammer 40k. A toweringly arrogant ancient race forced into an alliance of convenience with "primitives" due to their near extinction. The way Javik describes himself as the Avatar of Vengeance makes the title sound very similar to a Phoenix Lord, or at the very least an Exarch. Also, I'm pretty sure that there were at least a few 40k fans at Bioware while they were making the Mass Effect series, given that the Krogan have a gas giant in their system called Vaul, and there's literally a system called "Dakka."
I’ve only ever played the legendary edition, and I cannot even begin to imagine the story without Javik. Considering his race had been discussed in triplicate for the two previous games AND he was basically Isaac Clarke’d into another cyclic extinction, how they saw fit for him to be a DLC character is beyond me
I never like the whole "this is why they lost" every species in countless cycles lose because the citadel period. No structure no way of mixing up strategies nothing would of helped protheans win after reapers came through the Citadel unannounced.
Yep exactly, cut off the Citadel + Cutting off Mass Relays + Cutting Communication = Guaranteed Win. The protheans were definitely the smartest of all the lost civilizations, figuring out the Citadel was the key to invasion and giving the next civilization a chance of victory.
Sentiments differ. Some say, the statues were originally meant to represent protheans. This is evident from comparing Shepard's prothean visions from ME1 and ME2. In ME2 version there is collector pasted in the vision. As the final design for the protheans went on, the statues on Ilos are now known as the former race Inusannon. Other ppl say, they were never meant to represent protheans, which I personally doubt. But the lore went on to state them as Inusannon. According to ME Wiki: "In Mass Effect 3, the Prothean Javik reveals that Ilos was once inhabited by the extinct Inusannon before the Protheans discovered the world and colonized it themselves." I think it’s because they all work on “mass effect” technology, and “Mass Relay” is just the shorthand term, whereas “Mass Effect Relays” is the more technical term. Their FTL tech works on mass effect technology, but as a shorthand we just call it FTL because that makes sense.

There’d be loads such as Bloodborne for example because it’s very lovecraftian. Although not to be that guy but the protheans turned out to be pretty normal if not over glorified because aside from being slave masters they just got lucky and happened to build on empire on the ruins of other civilisations before them. The Reapers or the ones who made them are probably more of the trope you’re looking for.
Love the video but I wouldn't exactly say that the protheans demise was swift, as far as I know that battle against the protheans lasted centuries so it was quite a while before they were actually defeated
Here is my question what if it took the humans 100 years to activate their relay would the reapers go after humans in this cycle or would they have 50,000 years to prepare for the next cycle?
Likely as their information would not been in the citadel records and the alliance a.i would not be installed in human ships, the only reason they would check up on earth was prothean records.
Didn't the Prothean war against the Reapers last centuries? That's hardly swift. The events of ME3 take place over a few months and the Asari, Turean, etc all seem to be getting their collective butts kicked worse than the Protheans in that time frame.
They don't wipe out advanced life. Just those who invent ftl travel. The Asari technically should have been wiped out with the Protheans but the Protheans gate kept the ftl tech from them to use them as a cheat code in the next cycle.

Mass Effect 1 Protheans: Mysterious, intriguing, and nearly mystical beings. Shows flashes of scenes that hint on how they look like and how otherworldly they look like. ME3: COMMANDA SHEPPAD!
Exactly. I didnt even play me3 when i saw that. Plus in me1 they were cthulu looking aliens, which made sense for the lore since the reapers looked like the heads of the me1 promethians.
If the Protheans beat the Reapers, when would they have colonized humans? I have a feeling 20th and 21st century humans would be useless to them, prior to humans discovering Mass Effect technology.

Javik was WAY too important to be a DLC. He added so much to the game and EA treated him like he was another Zaeed.
Javik talking about Salarians: "They used to eat flies"
