This (rotten, unfair) practice is common with remodeling contractors, car restoration shops, and others. They're under-capitalized and keep taking on new work because they need the cash flow. The money you give them today is being used to finish a job they took on 18 months ago. Your job can't be completed unless more new customers give *their* money. Quite often these businesses owe money all over town and are behind on taxes and/or have leins against them. Next thing you the marshals come by and put padlocks on the doors. Your truck (or whatever) is locked inside for months or years until the matter makes its way thru the legal system. Sometimes, I reckon, the business is a scam. Other times, I'm sure, the business owner never intended for things to be this way but just can't manage things properly and gets buried.
Nailed it. There are way too many of these kinds of businesses operating as pyramid schemes.
Remodeling ponzi scheme.
EXACTLY and I've seen many of them!
Fraser has a treasure trove of scammer businesses.
And low life people living there. That whole side of town is a breeding ground.

My son had a food truck built in Las Vegas. Like a shiny car it looked good on the outside but when it rained water came from everywhere and the water tank was not connected correct and the list goes on
Sometimes a grimy lookin build is better than a shiny one, especially if the shiny one isn’t even functional.
That’s a bummer though. Best of luck to your son in his future business ventures.

I used to work for a guy that would’ve been a sho-in for Rob back in like 04-05. He bought out the original owner that hired me (selling mattresses) and immediately run up the company’s credit buying stock we couldn’t possibly sell any opened another location. Within months people were being sold mattresses (I didn’t know) we couldn’t possibly get. Months they’d wait, calling day in and out while this clown was up the street opening his dream slam dunk idea of a hotdog/ice cream shop. Once I smartened up I just refused to sell things that I couldn’t immediately deliver. Then we’d have to race to the bank because our checks bounced. I can’t tell you how many times people came up to the business ready to beat the man’s brains out and I would tell them exactly where he was because it was wrong. He was a garbage human. I learned the hard way that I’d never trust a business person without throughly doing a check on them after dealing with that guy.

Okay I'm usually a fan of this guy's "Hall of Shame" work but idk if this one really qualifies...or if it does, I'm not sure he did a good enough job of proving it and providing enough shadey doings aside from the fire proof wall thing...but that's just taking the clients word for that, the other guy claimed the client knew it wouldn't be fireproof so I think there needs to be more investigatory work done. He didn't have much on the guy and the guy knew it and that's why he wasn't scared to be interviewed and talk about things.
