The guy came out, told me my unit was completely rusted, told me i needed to upgrade my thermostats to smart digital, which were brand new ecobee just installed and my system had completely failed. I declined his repair and paid his ripoff fee. I bought a $9.00 can of coil cleaner and did it myself. My system has been running perfect ever since.

Hvac tech here. If you hire a company that pays commission to their techs, it incentivizes them to do expensive repairs/sell new units instead of doing simple repairs.
@@TechTails I used to work for a copier repair company that paid bonuses to their techs for not replacing parts. I had a coworker that would work my territory when I wasn't available, and he'd rig anything he could to avoid replacing parts. He got nice bonuses. Then the machine would break shortly after, and I'd be the one replacing parts. I'd get docked for the machine breaking down again plus the part. I'd rarely get a bonus. Needless to say, I quit that job. This is why you always ALWAYS get 2-3 opinions on something like this. I had a guy scam me on some handyman work and learned it the hard way. Now, I always get 3 quotes before ANY job is done.

You could tell who was the scammer by the umbrella even before he diagnosed the problem. All other techs fixed problem in the time it took him to put umbrella up.
150 dollars is not bad at all and shows honesty if they find an actual problem and taking pictures/videos. Charging for 1,750 for a non existent leak with no pictures or video is a pure scam.
I had an electrician come out recently because I thought I drilled through a wire in the wall when I was running cat7 cable in the house since the power went out in that area of the house. I checked the breaker box all looked normal. Tech said I simply tripped that breaker even though the power switch didn't physically move. He not only charged me nothing, he reFUSED a tip for his time.
Kind of crazy how quickly we've normalized such a high service call fee though. Was half that not too long ago. Everything has basically doubled in record time within the last decade, most of it in the last four years. Companies using inflation as an excuse to rip people off. I'm so sick of it.
Think of it this way: Not only do the customers know which company to avoid, the honest companies get free publicity. Everyone wins. Well, except the fraudsters of course
ALWAYS get a second opinion. My air handler was sweating profusely causing major leaks, my secondary pan would get filled up with water within a few hours and I had to constantly water vacuum it. Called a guy who quoted me $2400 because "the problem lied in my ductwork not being the right size for my unit". Doubting him, I called 2nd guy, who came in and did some minor tweaks and was done within 45 mins. Charged me $80 and it fixed the problem.
@stormblazt I agree if it sounds unreasonable to get someone else. In pittsburgh there is a company called gailece (hvac and plumbing) I called them up for a plumbing issue that they wanted to charge $2400 to repair, asked the tech to leave and called another company who said just a clogged pipe for $65.
@@MrJCerqueira Well, of course they're going to have to charge money for the time that it takes for one of their technicians to drive out to a house and diagnose an AC problem and fix even a simple AC problem. The AC companies have bills and salaries and taxes to pay, too, you know.
This is not even that bad. My elderly neighbor got a $5000 quote to fix her not working A/C which 'required' a new compressor unit. I happened to walk by and asked the tech strait up if it could be the capacitor, as those often go bad and should cost $20-$40 (without labor). he said No, the unit has to go. I convinced neighbor to send him away (he still charged her $150 diagnostic fee) and went looking for a capacitor. $20 and some minutes later (an honest A/C repairman working a few streets over was kind enough to sell me one from his stash), the unit is cooling again, and have been for months since.
That is great. What I tell my friends is that while I am not and AC guy if they call me, I can most likely keep them from getting ripped off. The most common problems in my experience (capacitors, motors, contactors, and thermostats, breakers.) many people could do on their own with the help of TH-cam.
