      Is the footage you shot handheld? I've heard the IBIS is great on the GH5, but I'm curious about the GX85. (Thanks for the excellent video. I'm subscribed!)

    • @wellnesspathforme6236

      What does the 4k crop mean in practical terms. I have a choice between a really good priced GX85 and two lenses or hold out for a G85 or G9 (I do value their improved IBIS). I'm considering using the GX85 as a bridge camera until the G9 prices drop over time. Is the lack of 24p at 1080 a significant issue? Is it a problem just to shoot 24p in 4k?
      Is slow motion credible in 1080 on the GX85 given it can't to 24p?
      It sounds like Panasonic borrowed the Canon Cripple Hammer (ref. Camera Conspiracies) to push people higher up in their product offerings.

    Great vid! Both are really great cameras, like that you pointed out the syncoscan of the GH5 as it is super useful shooting under artificial lights and is not a common capability among video centrc hybrids. I don't see it covered enough. Also really love the exposure tools of the GH5, can't beat having waveform and vectorscope built right into the camera. Still a big camera though, the gx85 i can fit in my pocket and centre console of my car making portability and ease of access significantly better. Also love the in camera battery charging via USB of the gx85 which I usually do in the car. Would've been great if the GH5 had this.

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Dom good to see you back here! I totally agree, I'm not even sure I can call another camera off the top of my head that has a Synchro Scan feature, it really is lovely! It's funny you mention that because I did cover waveforms in my "talking head" footage, but I ended up scrapping it because the video would've went on forever lol. I basically said the Waveform is a great exposure assist tool, especially built into a mirrorless system like the GH5. I don't typically use mine because I feel like the waveform takes up too much real estate on my lcd screen so I leave it off, otherwise It's really nice to have!

    • @dominic-ryan
      @dominic-ryan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpencerWhiteman there is a killer GH6 feature request I haven't seen anywhere. De-clutter the main LCD by having a small LCD screen on top of the camera body that can be used for showing EXIF data and cycling through the various meters. Doesn't need to be anything overly flash, just a wide viewing angle and bright.

    Really nice video, Spencer! Love using my GX85 for photo and video work. I've used the Shure VP83F as a shotgun mic as it has built in storage (via micro SD) to record without needing an aux input. It's a somewhat pricey mic but nice to have.

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha I would 100% agree with that, G85 is definitely a superior camera, I'm a sucker for the Gx85's design so I probably would pick it over the G85 myself! That being said, if I had one camera body, I would go with the G85 over the GX.

  • @john-5959
    @john-5959 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Both great choices i even use the GX85 as my zoom webcam :) But there is a huge price jump, my local camera store sells used GX85's for 230bucks, but it is hard to find a gh5 for under 1000 over here. The thing that dissapointed me about the gx85 is the soft 1080p video, the g85 is much sharper although you would have thought that they have the same heart. I've also seen someone add an mic input to the gx85 by using the wires from the internal mic, but i went the upgrade route instead of diy'ing. Another option for the GX85 is to record externally to a small recorder like the classic Atomos Ninja star, then you can plug the mic into the recorder, those recorders are used about 120bucks but only records 1080p.

    Quick question for the gx85. So stylistically, I'm shooting a short clip that's dark. Almost only showing the silhouette of the subject. However, the dark parts are rather noisy even at 200 iso.
    Is this the limitation of the camera or I should consider shooting in a brighter setting but introduce the dramatic darkness in post ? Also thank you for the awesome videos!

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the love Yong! As far as your issue goes, is the ambient lighting dark in general when you're shooting that silhouette shot? Sensors like a lot of light (For the most part) so if you shot at 1250 iso in daytime, you would barely see the noise because the sensor doesn't really have to work hard to boost the sensitivity to light. So even if your ISO is low but it's shot in a dark area, noise will be more prevalent.

    Hi Spencer - wonderful video. Great channel. wondering if you can help. I am looking for something with great zoom, Cinematic film making qualities (i.e. for me that means 4K 24fps) and really good low light. I'm still learning and realised that I wont be able to get the zoom of a FZ82 (which I was about to buy) with good low light and cinematic look. So I am hovering on the GX85 - or even the GX9. I also want to be able to capture the stars in the night sky (time lapse) and was hoping that a micro 43 will just about do it. Let me know if you have any recommendations of something similar to the GX85 but with reasonably good zoom. Much appreicated

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi my friend! Hmm good question, most m43 cameras lack good low light capabilities. I can still shoot decent low light scenes depending on my lens, but still, nowhere near the Sony cameras. I'd suggest looking into Sony cameras like the A6500/6400/6300 or even the A7S series. I can do night timelapse on the GX85 though. I'm not sure about your zoom concern though, that comes down to lenses separate from the camera body that can range wildly in price.

    Great video. I know you are huge into photography but i would love to see a video about cameras you recommend for shooting video. I have been having a hard time nailing down an ideal camera for shooting youtube videos without breaking the bank. I am using an action camera now but i hate how it cant focus well especially for close up product shots. I would love to see the cameras model options as well as features like external display while recording and recommended stands. I know that is prob out of range on what you want to do but it would be an amazing help. Until then i will keep digging.

      What are you looking for. Camera to have autofocus or I don’t care. Waterproof. 8 bit or 10 bit. 60fps or 120 FPS. Image stabilization or good lowlight. Tell us a little more on your usage

      @@lovefirst6157 autofocus. 60fps. 4k would be nice. External display. Waterproof is not needed. I would like to have video that just pops when I am showing off products like game pieces that focuses quickly on different pieces that I present. I also need really solid audio with that video. Has to be clear and crisp. More image stability than low light but both would be a huge plus. I am a noob when it comes to photography/video and I am trying to learn as much as possible. Not sure about the 8 bits / 10 bits. My videos involve showcasing board games and video game stuff. So board games have a lot of pieces and some of those involve cards with artwork and text. So trying to show the pieces in clarity is a huge goal of mine. The action camera just slightly blurs the image when i hold a card up to the camera. Its kind of annoying so i know i need a good camera. I need the external display while recording so i can see what i am doing while presenting and i am not near the camera.

Olympus em1 markii, Panasonic g9( autofocus is not the greatest but ok) 4. Fuji xt3, Fuji xs10(the best fit for you honestly), Fuji xt4. In my opinion, I would go with the newest release of Fuji which is Fuji xs10 because it gives you good autofocus, good 60fps and great 4K, good image body stabilization, up to iso 6400 or even more is great and not to expensive.

      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice one man! They actually aren't too hard to match compared to other camera systems. I feel like Panasonic colors and Blackmagic colors look similar! I just dial everything in slowly. First adjust the WB to look the same, then adjust contrast levels, sometimes colors are more prominent than the other on a specific camera, so I usually take a HUE/SAT curve to adjust them to look the same, maybe even a little bit of HUE/HUE curve adjustments. I also recommend to shoot in -5 sharpness on the GX85, the blackmagic has 0 sharpening going on so I'd start off with -5 sharpening on the GX85 to get the sharpness to look the same as well.

    For Vlogging, would a GX85 with a gimbal be more suitable than a GH5?

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm, I don't think the GX85 with a gimbal would be any better than the GX85 without a gimbal. The great thing about the GX85 is the size for vlogging, it's perfect. The bad thing about it is it doesn't have a mic jack so you have to be okay with just using the built in mic. I think the GH5 is a bit better for Vlogging just because it has a mic jack and most importantly it has a fully articulating screen so you can see yourself and see if you're in focus while vlogging.

    Hey, Spencer. I was really looking forward to this video. As a GH5 owner who's contemplating jumping ship over to the Pocket 4K I know two things: a) I will miss the crap out of this camera and b) If I sell, I would get a GX85 to suplement the one thing the pocket can't offer, which is IBIS. On that note, I have two questions that I hope you may have an answer for: how would you compare the IBIS on both this cameras? And more importantly, how would you compare the boosted IBIS on the GH5 to the regular IBIS on the GX85? I was actually shooting a wedding today and was handholding my Nikkor 135mm at 24p and was getting good footage (not usable, but actually shake-free good). This might be boring or just uninspiring questions, but they are the ones I just cannot answer for myself and I very much trust your work and the eye behind it. So thank you for any insight you may have and I'll again be looking forward to the next video.

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rodrigo thank you! I love that you asked that. I totally agree, I think getting a GX85 would fill that void a bit if you get rid of your GH5, since they are pretty similar. The IBIS on both cameras are very comparable, I think the GH5 JUST barely takes the win on that one, the GX IBIS is stellar as well. As for the boosted IBIS on the GH5, I actually am not sure of it's comparativeness to the GX85's IBIS, I don't use the boosted IBIS on the GH5 since I think it introduces some unwanted warping at times and crop. Those are just my 2 cents!
