Man, I just keep coming back to these videos. Obviously, the gx85 is a great camera but after watching tons of other videos on it, it's clear that this footage looks so good because of who is behind the camera.
Thank you for continuously making videos about the GX85. I learnt new things and understanding my camera even more watching your videos. I considered a few things selling it but now I am gonna hold on to it. Thank you!!
Beautiful video! Apart from the great tips, I just love the way the video looks, combined with the subtle background music, I think this video is a piece of art in itself. Keep making this type of content, it is very useful and a pleasure to watch!
Yes! So much for me to learn from this video. As a complete beginner, I've been coming back to take notes and it's a beautiful experience in doing so. There's plenty of helpful video's out there but in comparison to these they have an abrasive tone. I'll happily immerse myself here over and over again.
having previously owned an a6300, i have to say that i am impressed by the power of this gx85. i'm using it now and i find it quite suitable. gx85 plus the 25mm 1.7 lumix lens (i bought them mainly after seeing a video of them together on this channel) was about half the price of what i paid for my previous a6300 + sony 35mm f1.8 oss. there are aspects i like about the gx85, of which i will mention three pleasant ones: 1) autofocus, even if it kinda sucks by itself, i found that if i use the manual focus, by using the touchscreen or back-button-focus, it is very satisfactory for my needs and i did not expect to be so ok with it - so, guys, touch focus still can be used in manual focus mode, and is very very usable; 2) having a touch screen is quite a thing; 3) shooting indoors with it is not that bad. i've had the combo for a few days and i recommend it to those who have an a6300 and want to have something rather comparable and at only about half the price. p.s.: natural profile is very gradable in video (with the settings recommended in this channel).
Gosh mate! What such beautiful images out there! Incredible how you managed to create such beautiful images out of a budget camera! As people say: It's not about the camera but the technique. Subbed!
Amazing content! It’s nice to see that there’s someone out there dishing out videos about the GX85. I can’t wait to see this channel blow up. Subscribed!
Although it's been discontinued for years, I just got my hands on this recently - after watching many vids on youtube. Excited to explore and really get the best out of it. Thank you for this video, so helpful and inspiring.
So happy right now. I watched lots of videos on how to focus correctly with this camera and litterally none went over the MF Assist Display option. I was so confused when nothing happened using the second wheel on my lens. I thought it has to be there for a reason. Now you finally shown me what it is there for and I couldn't be happer that I figured out how to focus properly not only in video but in my photography aswell. Stumbling across your videos like a year ago is the reason I got this camera in the first place. So thank you twice 💙.
Wow! It is SO good to find another filmmaker who 1. Uses the GX85 and 2. Is aware of the negative consequences of it's lack of a low-pass filter (and the wonderful workaround of using lenses that "mitigate...the effects")! There are a few experiments I've done which are working well in this area I'd like to share: A. I've use a Viltrox .71x focal reducer (have both Nikon and Canon mount versions) and they seem to really improve how the light is delivered to the sensor...and result in less digital AND MORE REAL rendering of the scene). B. In conjunction with this, I've used a Tokina 12-24 f/4 (which turns into an f/2.8-ish with the focal reducer) and this combination looks pretty filmic/natural (perhaps due to the less aggressive, but very appealing, color and contrast rendition). Here's a sample of it used indoors: th-cam.com/video/6MF_JSdLmqc/w-d-xo.html
@@FilmSpook Thank you! I've tested additional lenses, with this camera body, after I left the above comment, including the Tokina 11-16 2.8, the Sigma 18-35 1.8 as well as others, and I have figured out CUSTOM SETTINGS for each lens-sensor combo
Great to see how you get the most from this humble Lumix, which can be applied to all the other Lumix cameras too. The quality of your work also, for me, reinforces that it's not all specs and overheating issues that make good footage, but foremost, the photographer...
Spencer, you mentioned how you use the Simmod variable ND on all lenses. but I can only find the 77mm. can you help me with some amazon links. Thank you.
Your GX85 videos literally helped me pulled the trigger for this camera body. Right now I'm pairing it on a Viltrox NF-M43x Speedbooster with a Sigma 28mm f.28 Mini Wide II, Nikon 35mm f2.8 AI, Nikon 50mm f2.8 AI. And also using a Helios 44-2 without the speedbooster for a kinda zoom length. Followed your settings and tips for the setup. The footages I got with this camera are simply stunning. For a used camera at this price point, I am very much glad that I found your suggestion on TH-cam. Thanks for really helping me out with the videos you posted.
I bought a new old stock GX-85 last year to get a more pocketable camera to combine with my 14mm and 20 mm pancake primes for stills. Your video opens up an entirely different potentials of the GX-85 I had not dreamt were available. Even as a primarily stills photographer your use of the Zebras for more precise exposure control strikes me as a digital version of Ansel Adams' Zone System and your prescription for focusing settings likewise would seem to add greater precision just where I need it. I have tried but not used adapted glass much because my old eyes prior to cataract surgery were almost entirely dependent on autofocus, but this video opens up reconsideration of these possibilities - again both for stills and motion photography.
Lorenz, thank you so much for the beautiful comment! Comments like these are a huge reason why I create these videos. I love the reference to Ansel Adams' Zone System, it's similar in style in capturing the darkest parts of the image so as to not lose that detail, but keeping the white point just under clipping, maxing out the sensors capable dynamic range. I'm so glad you found this video eye-opening! :)
Literally just ordered a GX85. Had the same T3i since 2011 and needed something 4k that I could run through my cam link as well. Super excited. Love your videos on the GX85
bro this not even my lane with videography but did your thing with this video as far as image quality & the overall end product! i’ve been shooting with the gx85 for a while & you just got me hip to some great new tips!! keep it up 🔥
I picked up this camera couple months back and I’m in love with it! Made my first “cinematic” b-roll video with it and I’m very happy with the results!
The first time I pressed the "record" button and then played it back, I couldn't believe how awesome the image stabilization was. I had never shot anything that looked like... a movie.
Amazing video, amazing camera, amazing person, What a perfect combination. just started saving money to buy this camera, then see this video tell about what's this camera capable. It makes me so excited!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I just picked up a GX85 to use as a "webcam" for Twitch and FB gaming streaming BUT I also wanted the ability to have it as a B Cam for my TH-cam content and some Doc work I'd like to do, as well as a top down camera for reviews.
That is awesome man! It'll be a great b cam for YT work. Also, you probably use an external mic for gaming? The GX85 doesn't have an external mic in so it uses the cameras scratch audio, it's not too bad though!
Thanks for the vid man. Was wondering how powerful my camera was, I’m happy I decided on this powerful little thing. Looking forward to adapting some new lenses in the future and shooting more with this camera.
We just bought the GX85 two lens kit that was recently on sale. We are starting over with our equipment choices, some years ago we had the GH4 and a good selection off pro lenses. We kept the lenses and sold the GH4, we also have the Nikkor lenses you have plus a few more. We film our studio shots with the GX85 and external audio and are really liking the compact set up. Thanks for the video, has been useful.
If you ever had the time to put an affiliate link for your lens/connections it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for providing much needed videos, i was looking everywhere for this help!
Besides being useful, your video looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous, well done! Recent GX85 owner here, mostly shooting family portraits including of our 4-month old, but very interested in learning to shoot (and edit) nice videos.
Hello, can you please list the adapters you use to adjust the Nikon lenses to the lumix gx85 ? I purchased this camera recently, and I want to purchase these adapters that you showed in the video her, thank u.

Amazing result our of this small box. i m rediscovering the gx85 that i bought 7-8 years ago and really enjoy it. Your video brings more interest to the video part. Some of the links are not available anymore, could you give the references of the gears used. Also why is the 25mm your favorite lens (i have 20mm and 42.5 and contemplating the 25mm), is it still the 3 years later?
Hi spencer! Great vid. Question, there is a hood which adapts the ND filters (77mm) with the diameter of the lenses, do you know how to find it or an specific name? Greetings from Peru 🇵🇪
Awesome video!! Helpful tips and beyond amazing b-roll! Started a business and am looking to vertically integrate marketing & promotion myself. Looking for a camera to pair with my Crane 2. Your videos single handly convinced me to purchase! Great price for what it offers! Keep up the good work & the GX85 content!
Thanks for the tutorial video. I havent bought the GX85 yet, but I will. This will help me in advance and for the time being I will practice a bit on the GX1. Cheers.
Thanks Spencer, as someone who previously owned a GX85 and now a GX9, I love seeing what it can do in capable hand. Anyway, may I ask if you have a tip to nail white balance or do you just stick with sunlight?
Just found your videos and these inspired me to break out my gx85!! I forgot how much I loved this camera and am now considering some new lenses. Would love to see if you have any recommendations for a portable tripod for travel or what you would take with you in a gx85 travel kit. 🙏 will be doing a Southeast Asia trip and will be taking the gx85
Hey Spencer, I'm just curious if there's a reason why you don't use a Nikon F to MFT Speedbooster like the Viltrox NF-M43X? It also has the same focal reduction of 0.71 and adds the extra stop of light. Thanks for your great content, keep it up!
Hey Nicsnutzius..I was about to ask Spencer the same thing coz I got myself GX85 after I watched this tip but use the Viltrox F to M43 adapter. If you don't mind me asking when using it for photography do you use the 16:9 or 3:2 format? Since I do video as well as photo
Thank you for the love my brother! The reason for doing this is because I already own EF mount lenses, and I wanted to be able to adapt them as well. The EF mount is more of a standard mount in the video industry as well, many camera manufactures have EF mount cameras compared to Nikon F mount cameras.
I would actually use 4:3 since that is the whole height and width of the sensor! 16:9 and 3:2 are both cropping on your sensor. 3:2 & 16:9 are nice to view your images in (since they are a bit more standard in the industry), but you're actually losing resolution that way. I would suggest shooting 4:3 and then if you want, you can crop the image to 16:9 or 3:2 in post for a more "normal" look.
@@SpencerWhiteman That's good to know. I'm totally new to the topic of lenses, so I didn't know that the EF mount is spreaded so widely. Have you also tried one of those cheaper Nikon F to M43 adapters without the extra stop of light? I was wondering if it is possible to benefit from one of those because of the smaller sensor size of the GX85. As far as I understood this, the focal length would then be doubled - so wouldn't e.g. your Nikkor 50mm 1.4 AI-S then effectively become a 100mm lens?
Thanks for this video -- I will be referencing it when I'm out trying to dial in some good video with my G85. I did want to correct one thing. For focus peaking, "Low" basically represents "less precision" with the peaking color. "High" represents "higher precision" with the peaking color. IOW, if you really want to nail focus -- High is where you want to be, however, it may be quite a bit more difficult to see the peaking because it will only occur in a narrower focal range. The quickest and easiest focus option is on low, but the focus peaking color might not provide the optimal focus for the shot. Why doesn't the manual focus guide have a number associated with it? A number for a particular focus distance would make vlogging focus so easy!
Great video Spencer! I have a G-85 that I’ve been using mostly for a couple years now but seeing your images and results after grading I am returning to my settings to set up a matching profile to yours and just see if I can’t just squeeze a little more out of it here. Liked and sub’d!
This is such a great video Spencer! I keep coming back to it now and then - almost just to enjoy that moody and cinematic feel you have created. I guess it partly comes down to your choice of music. Great! I have the GX80 myself and just got step-up rings enough so to put my 58 mm NiSi ND-filter on the 12-32 mm kit lens! What variable ND-filter are you using? I can´t pick up what brand name you are saying?
Thank you so much Tomas, and sorry for the late response! Oh yes! The brand is called Simmod. I'm specifically using their 77MM Variable ND. The thing I love about it is the hard stops on both ends of the spectrum, so you won't be dealing with cross polarization and get the "X" pattern in your footage. Great glass as well with no dramatic colour cast.
For us newbs... @3:40 -- What exactly are you doing to "expose to the right" and "dialing it in right before your zebra stripes start to show"? Inquiring minds want to know! BTW, I think you applying these techniques to different situations would make for a pretty cool video.
Hey Inas! I mention the names in the video, but I'll write them down in this comment. I use the Nikon 24mm 2.8 AIS & Nikon 50mm 1.4 AIS. I adapt them with the Viltrox EFMII Speedbooster.

We kept the lenses and sold the GH4, we also have the Nikkor lenses you have plus a few more. We film our studio shots with the GX85 and external audio and are really liking the compact set up. Thanks for the video, has been useful.
That is awesome! GX85 is a beautiful little camera, of course!
Better than a lot of fancy 10bit or RAW footage. Nice shots, colours.. everything! I like it!
Gorgeous pictures! I might have to go shopping soon.
If you ever had the time to put an affiliate link for your lens/connections it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for providing much needed videos, i was looking everywhere for this help!
Hey Marc, they are in my description. Thank you so much for the kind words!
Besides being useful, your video looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous, well done! Recent GX85 owner here, mostly shooting family portraits including of our 4-month old, but very interested in learning to shoot (and edit) nice videos.
Thank you for the love Martijn!! I feel like that's what this camera is perfect for, also, congrats on the "newish: child ;)
This is gold! tnx for taking the time to share this with us! I Love this camera so much.
Of course, thank you so much for watching!
Wow, that was awesome. What a high quality and helpful tips! Thank you!
Thank you so much Oliver!!
Buffalo Trace is delicious. Super impressed with the quality youve squeezed out of this camera
could you do a video with the just using the base camera and kit lens? I feel as though most of us will be starting with that! .
Thank you for the suggestion brother! That is very true, I might have to do something like that in the near future, thank you again!
Nice work and useful advice. Again, I appreciate your taking the time to share your info. Best wishes.
Thank you so much Philip, I appreciate the comment and the support! 👍🙌

Haha thank you so much Dionne, I appreciate the kinds words and sub!
I am looking for the same thing, did you find a solution ?
Beautiful visuals! Thank you, you helped me out a lot!
Thank you Jacob! I'm glad I could help you out!
Your work is amazing. I love the GX85
great video, thanks a lot!
Very useful video with great advice. Thanks👍

Anyway, may I ask if you have a tip to nail white balance or do you just stick with sunlight?
i have Lumix gx 85 , i wanna use it for shoooting videos , wich linser is best for this camera? and not that expensive? thank you
I love the 25mm 1.7!
And I always thought of myself primitive collecting and using manual lense on m43 bmpcc 4k.
Thankyou spencer for this video! Especially de focussing tips helped a lot!
I'm glad it was helpful my friend, thank you!!

Amazing tips and insights, brother; deeply appreciate you! 👍
Thank you my brother!!
@@SpencerWhiteman 😊☮️ Very Welcome, brother!
The canon to Nikon ring is not available anymore, do you have another link please? Incredible video, thanks a lot.
A number for a particular focus distance would make vlogging focus so easy!
dude! great shots! thanks for the tips
Thank you so much Jesus, appreciate the love!
Fantastic footage and instructions!!
Great video. I still use the g85, but I wish I still had my gx85. Such a solid camera for the money.
It sure is man, both are so great!
Inspiring footage Sir.
Thanks a lot Spencer for such a good guide! Love my gx85 with planar 50 1.4🤗Now you have a sub from Russia))
OOH. Thank you for the sub my friend! Also, that gx85 with the planar sounds like a dream combo!
Holy shit phenomenal work bro.
Haha thank you so much my friend!
Great video Spencer! I have a G-85 that I’ve been using mostly for a couple years now but seeing your images and results after grading I am returning to my settings to set up a matching profile to yours and just see if I can’t just squeeze a little more out of it here. Liked and sub’d!
Thank you so much Reginald, hope those settings work out for you :)
lovely work and great info thanks so much!! but if you going to use vintage lenses why not a fuji XE?
You are a Master.
Simply Brilliant.
Haha thank you so much Jackson!
Awesome vídeo! Great tips, i love my gx80 💪🏻
This was a really great video, thank you for posting!
Thank you for the kind words!!
Would you please write down the lenses you use? I am a beginner in photography and videography. and I love the way you make the video
Hey Inas! I mention the names in the video, but I'll write them down in this comment. I use the Nikon 24mm 2.8 AIS & Nikon 50mm 1.4 AIS. I adapt them with the Viltrox EFMII Speedbooster.
