    I've enjoyed a year or two of this camera. When I held it I liked the weight and the non-reversible screen didn't seem to matter once I realised I could use the app on my 'phone to take pics. I'm tall and with the tilty screen I can get over most heads in a crowd. I added a zoom lens and may get a prime. So far I've enjoyed the experience and learnt about the joys of post-processing. The 4K video is great and when I took pics of a band in low light I took some video clips. Later I found I could make clear stills from them, accidentally discovering burst mode, I suppose. I'd like 20+ megapixels and would consider an upgrade in the future however, realistically, I could afford this one and didn't have thousands to throw into some precision beast. This is my 'A' camera because it's my only camera and I like it.

    Personally for still photography which is what I mainly do (and what i think this camera was mainly intended for) I prefer the screen the way it is. More discreet than one sticking out of the side.

    I used this little cam for a year, i made a music video and photos for my friends and family. This is something that can't disappoint anyone apart from professional photographers or videomakers. I like everything in fact I can say what I don't like and it is the fact that it does't shoot raw on video (couldn't really ask at this price point... ). With a manual 25mm f1.7 this stuff becomes the dream of every non professional videomaker

    I prefer the tilting screen to the flip-out type. It's about choice, so please don't say that ALL cameras should have flip-out screens. If you want a flip-out screen there are plenty of options.

    This is hands down the best camera for the price IMO, used it for the last year. The lack of audio bums me out, and I wish there were just a hint more bokeh, but all in all I love this little camera. I just recently upgraded (budget wise) to the Sony A6500, but the GX85 is an amazing little B cam.

      Could you tell me if it is a good change from the GX85 to the Sony A6500? I am about to buy and I am undecided. My idea is to make more video than photos. I want your opinion rest on your results.

    • @jakelarntz
      @jakelarntz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nakiradams Yes the a6500 is a nice jump up from the Gx85, but I recommend keeping both. That being said you cannot deny the A6500's video making capability, I absolutely adore mine, The AF is fantastic, and a modified Picture Profile for S-LOG, and Cine2 really allows for some serious flexibility when it comes to color grading, plus 120 FPS is just plain fun. Id say go a6400, OR 6600 though for now because they have a wealth of features that the 6500 does not. That being said if you find a great deal don't hesitate on the 6500.

    I went from a GX1 to this one and I totally agree with you with some additions. I miss the handfeel and from the GX1 with its front/back rubberized grips. Also the GX80/85 feels abit plastic because it is plastic of course. Besides the audio I/o jacks it would've been nice with NFC connection to WiFi since the manual connection to smartphone is abit finicky. Besides those minor remarks it's fantastic bang for the buck and I use it with vintage manual lenses as my everywhere everyday camera. The stabilitycompensation is fantastic when working with old manual glass. thanks for the review!

    Small. Lightweight. Inexpensive body but closer to $400 now a days. Beautiful image quality photos and video. Very good quality choice of M43 lenses that are also small and lightweight. I love the L monochrome B&W jpeg files.
    The biggest problem I have with the GX85 is the lack of a microphone jac. With all the video features this body has packed into it this was a big omission. This is a photography centric body so the tilt screen is the right choice. All small body cameras have small batteries. The good news is extra Wasabi batteries are inexpensive and lightweight.
    LUMIX discontinued the GX body line. That is so sad. I purchased a 2nd GX85 as a backup body. I have recommended this camera with my wallet. This is a powerful street photography, travel, and EDC camera.

    I feel like this camera is built for cinematic shooting and B roll but not so much vlogging or youtube content in general, while the G85 is the opposite. I bought the GX85 in 2021 because of its size and capabilities. My D750 is just too noticeable in public, too obtrusive in groups, and becomes a spectacle when I'm carrying it around into a restaurant, store, or somewhere else. It's rather inconvenient, but the GX85 just goes everywhere easily. It has amazing image quality and my plan is to sell the D750 and do it all with M43. I am seeking a 2nd body to possibly start a portrait business, and the GX85 is on my list since the portraits would be outdoor or on-location type shots and it's just so easily portable. It's small, yes, so not quite as easy to adjust rapidly as a full frame DSLR due to the spread of controls, but I shoot portraits mostly in Aperture Priority, so it's still easy. I find the images excellent and 16MP is still great. It wasn't too long ago the D700 Nikon at 12MP was considered spectacular and the GX85 matches it on dynamic range, so the tiny sensors really can do a lot. Not what a D750 can do with dynamic range, but plenty for my work.

      I value the small size and lightweight features of this body. I also own the GX9. Incremental improvements. Either of these GX bodies would be fine for your use case. There are a lot of good, small lenses for this body. Just bought the 42.5/1.7 and can’t believe how small and lightweight it is.

    @Ryan - So I was convinced that I was getting the G7 before I saw this video (actually ordered one and found out the condition was bad) but I came from an a6000 and XT-10 so I am familiar with its size. I am looking at an older Atomos recorder and cant seem to see if the GX85 records 'true' clean HDMI out. I saw that the g7 doesnt but some people mention how Panasonic left that option in. Really great video! I've starting looking at this for TH-cam use. My current gear is really lacking for videos, especially when I have to film myself. How is their phone app with this camera? I've seen some people say Panasonic's app is great for controlling video functions, but not sure if it applies to this camera specifically. My Nikon D750 with WIFI can't even control video at all, and my Fujifilm won't let me control my focal point in video recording mode through their WIFI app.

    • @RyanTimms
      @RyanTimms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The app is great! The only bummer about this camera for TH-cam is the lack of audio jack. For more robust content like this video you really need a mic. The app is great to use to check focus and your settings see how you are framed up. You can use the Touch AF setting and draw a box around where your face will be. That is pretty reliable. but it doesnt have good continuous AF. so if you are doing something and you hold up an item really close to the camera for a close up focus pull it will take a long time to grab it. If you need something like that I'd suggest looking at Sony or Canon (they both have much better AF performance). If you really like the panasonic ecosystem check out the G7 or G85 both really great options with Mic inputs.
      For example, I shot this video with a GH4, 12-35f2.8 set to MF and used the Touch AF on the app to set focus and then just started talking. Once I was confident I was in focus I just used the rec button on the app knowing it wouldnt shift while in MF mode.
      Hope this helps!

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. Their app does sound really useful. I usually use a recorder and a lapel mic, syncing the audio in the editor, so no mic port isn't a huge issue for me personally as long as the internal audio is good enough to sync. I just wish this camera had a full flip screen and the lackluster AF isn't ideal as well.

    • @RyanTimms
      @RyanTimms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The AFC mode isnt great, especially when it starts to get a bit dark. Theres some shots in this video at a science convention at 2:09 mark, all of those are MF at a set distance. I tried using the AF-C mode this day but it was terrible. I wouldnt recommend it. If you REALLY need to use AF then you're better off looking at a Sony system. but for me this was a way to match with my GH4 stuff and keep 1 small,light camera on a gimbal. and the other with a heavier nicer lens on sticks or monopod.
      Hope this helps.

    • @cameraz99
      @cameraz99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I find that if you use AF-S mode, and touch the screen for where you want the focus to be, it works better and faster than AF-C mode.

    Ryan, as a video shooter using the GX85, did you shoot with manual or auto focus? And if you have the focus hunting issues, can you share the technique used to minimize the hunting. I have the GX85, and some lenses are worse than others. With the 20mm 1.7 pancake lens, it has a tendency to overshoot the focus when I pan from near to far, or vice versa. That little amount of overshooting the focus, then hunting back to focus correctly, is really distracting to my videos. Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

      Hi Rekle, I think this is a great option for Macro Photography if it falls in your budget. Take a look at some of the awesome lenses from Panasonic or Olympus. As for other suggestions, the new GX9 looks really awesome (though I haven't used it myself) or something like the LX10/LX100 might be just what you need. The new LX100 mk2 seems to have a lot of great features in a small compact body like this. If it includd 4k60p I would have been ALLLLLL over that for video, but sadly for me photos come second.

    Good review. Most reviews are rather lame, IMHO. This was a good one. I particularly liked the video footage of the band. However, I don't think you can find a good example of this camera for a couple hundred bucks. If I could I'd buy a second one or two. I really like this camera. The stabilization was such a game changer, it was the reason I sold my GH4 to by the GH5. However this is lighter and as you said less intimidating. It's a milestone camera IMHO.

    Thanks for the tips! I am a video artist who travels perpetually. The only hesitation I have about this camera is its weather-proofing. There is none. I haven't been in intense weather with the Gx85... yet. But I know wind will come, and moisture too. While I don't stand in the rain, I am wondering just how sensitive the camera is. Same goes with dust. Is it simply a matter of getting a protective case (i.e. - leather that fits around it) Seems obvious, but I want to make sure... Thoughts?

    • @RyanTimms
      @RyanTimms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure a case will save it from extreme weather conditions. If you are going say from super cold into a warm car its going to take some time for the camera to get used to it..take it slow. as for rain/dust/snow I would avoid at all costs with this little guy. If youre in these environments a lot you may want to consider upgrading.

    • @AngelaCVilla
      @AngelaCVilla 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @AngelaCVilla 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I am really enjoying this camera, except for the issue of weather sensitivity - the avoiding at all costs is difficult. Your suggestions on 'upgrading' to a camera that is a similar size/weight - and of course, quality- with weather-proofing would be greatly appreciated...

      off the top of my head I think the gx8 is weather sealed, I'd start there. Otherwise youre looking into something like a GH4, GH5, G85 or the like. My guess is you will need to go up to a slightly bigger body no matter what. Dont discount Olympus I know they have a few bodies that are weather sealed that still take great video. Depends on your needs and this will require a bit of research.

    Dear Ryan, I wanna buy a cam for YT, I’m confused between GX85 vs G7. I’m not bothered by neither the audio jack nor the tilt screen... what matters the most ... 1- image quality, as I read on different links it’s better on the g7, also most of samples of g7 on YT crispier than the ones shot on GX85 .... 2- money wise, it’s on sale now on Amazon for 600$ GX85 12 - 33mm + 45 - 150mm lenses free bundle VS G7 for 500$ + 25mm 1.7 for 140$.... So, should I get the GX85 with prime for 740$ in total or just get the g7 with prime 640 $... which do you think is a deal for life ? Is that 45 - 150mm lens big deal? Thank you so much, you got your channel sub for life.

    • @RyanTimms
      @RyanTimms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Nasser! not to make this even more complicated for you, but for your needs I would consider the G85. It will give you the best stuff from the GX85 and the G7 in one package. If you stretch your budget a little bit further you can get the G85 with the kit 12-60 lens for about $900 right now (maybe check ebay for a used one). I own that 45-150 and its not great. I never really use it because the quality of glass is sub-par. G85 will give you the IS and image quality of the GX85 and the audio jack, form factor, and bigger battery of the G7. In my opinion the GX85 has better image quality than the G7. They share similar sensors so theres is likely very little difference, but I have owned both and can say I prefer the GX85. That being said I have other cameras with audio jacks. I like the GX85 because it is so small but if I NEED a mic jack I can jump to one of my larger bodies (GH4 or GH5). If are going to get 1 camera to cover all your bases I would get the G85.

    I love the GX85, the size is the biggest factor for me. I bought the Leica 15mm f1.7 lens and the 35-100 f2.8 after a year of using the kit lenses and it instantly upgraded the image quality, which was already great with the kit lenses.
    That said, I’m dreaming of the G9. But if I buy it I think I’ll still keep the GX85 as a second camera that I can bring with me all the time. Which raises the point of do I really want to upgrade to a G9?

If you want more advanced features you're forced to buy a much bigger model like the GH or G series which kinda beat the purpose of m43.The only other camera that matches this camera is the E-M10 III, but as usual it received the "beginner camera"treatment from Oly that Panny does to this camera too, to a certain extent. Idk why m43 manfacturers think that enthusiasts only use bigger bodies when we all need that GH5 in a GX-body. And no, E-M5 II doesnt count, because the video that comes out of it is as good as a CRT TV.

You will get awesome 4k, the 5 axis stabilization which is INCREDIBLE, and a mic input. This in my opinion is the best budget filmmakers option at the moment. Cheaper alternative would be the G7 which has everything about the same except no sensor stabilization. Buy one of those two while you save up for the GH5 to get that great slowmo and youll have a really nice kit! Cheers!
