    Tip for fine hair: Yes, you can keep it long but *don't* get layers. A blunt cut makes your hair look a million times better. If you must have a few layers, keep them below shoulder length. A blunt cut will give the impression that you have more volume. I learned this after years of stylists insisting on giving me layers that always made my hair look bitty and straggly. Blunt cut all the way.

    • @allblueberries
      @allblueberries 2 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      Blunt cuts all the way. I really don't care for layers on frizzy hair either (me) for all the reasons you mentioned. So many stylists insist on layers and I feel as if I am actively saying I am old-fashioned when I try to explain how I've had bad experiences with layers looking comically frizzy on me. Also the more stressed I become, I could swear my hair gets more frizzy and layers exacerbate it ??? I hope it's not all in my head ;).

    • @brittanyv
      @brittanyv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      YES! I finally found a stylist who validates me when I tell her I can't have too many layers because my hair is fine. She totally agrees. She will give me just a few face framing layers in the front and the rest is either blunt or just has the TINIEST layering. I feel much better with this. I will never forget the time a stylist took a razor to my fine hair and i just looked like I was on a bender for 4 months after that lmao

    This video is actually super informative. I usually don't wear my hair up because I feel like it looks prettier down since I have a weird headshape. Also hair texture makes a huge difference. I've tried to do pinterest hairstyles made by girls with caucasian hair on my east asian textured hair and it was a real expectation vs reality experience for me lmao. My stiff hair hates most hairstyles, but it does well with heat. I can curl my hair and it'll still look great after being slept on.

    • @luluah1198

      @Rhea Mickens I agree with you. I went with a jaw grazing messy Bob at the back it’s shorter like a pixie . I want a long pixie though. My hair dresser said the same it’s high maintenance but she was thinking about her own hair texture and weight of the hair etc . After she had styled my hair she told me actually your hair would sit neatly no style necessary . I already knew this but I don’t like disrespecting ppl in authority especially professionals, so I went along with her suggestion. I also figured if I liked that short Bob I could wean myself slowly onto a shorter cut 😂
      When my hair is wet I can see it suits me so that wet look hair do is an easy look to achieve . Anything that is 5 mins or less I’m happy with ;)
      I never spent more than that on my long hair so I don’t see why I should on shorter hair. I think ppl spend longer because they’re afraid the short hair is making them boyish subconsciously . So they need to be honest with themselves . Yes it will make you look more masculine, but you will still look feminine too because you are a woman? Does it really bother you , looking a bit masculine. If it irks the individual that much then they shouldn’t proceed, as it will knock their self esteem .
      I can’t use extensions but I’m not worried I either grow it very slowly. Or leave it . I think if I live another twenty years I’m trying varying lengths but nothing longer than touching the shoulders . I’ve had more than half my life with long hair. Change is good sometimes :)

    I’ve had short hair three times in my adult life and 2/3 I hated it. I took the plunge and cut it short again and absolutely love it. There’s so many different cuts for short hair. As someone with an oval face and thin hair a blunt cut below my chin does wonders and actually makes me feel like I don’t have a huge long face. So just for anyone watching this but scared to go short because of bad experiences, don’t! I feel so free!

    I have curly hair and a round face and have watched the pixies, lobs, and bobs coming in over the past couple years. I've been tempted to go pixie once again. When French Kiss came out, I fell in love with Meg Ryan's hair, and found a stylist who gave me that hair cut(by coincidence she just did it for her daughter whose hair was curly like mine) It was absolutely amazing. The maintenance was great bc I could was and go, but the growing out process took a long time. I wouldn't do it again becuase of the time it took to grow out, but also I would have to find someone I could trust who knows curly hair well enough to do it. I'm a little a traumatized bc of what people have done over the years to my hair. Love your videos. Your honesty and openness about wigs, your help with understanding and using box dye, and discussing your own hair struggles and succeses gives people confidence to address the issues or insecurities they may be facing. Thank you for sharing🙂😃

    • @MusicLover-sb7mo

      Oh boy do I get the traumatized comment! Curly and multi textural hair (combination of straight, curly and wavy in various spots around one head - that’s me) is always a challenge for a new hair stylist. Not only do they need to be experienced with how to cut curl, but they need to get to know how your hair behaves. Everyone’s growth pattern is different. In my case, one side hikes up more than the other, so the same length on either side, whether layered or not, the result can be uneven. Some layered cuts can be forgiving, but often it just make my hair bushy on one side, limp on the other and hard to control. So sometimes it takes three or more visits before the stylist nails it. Plus you need to explain your hair quirks and daily challenges. The first cut is very telling. Did it turn out close, disappointing or a complete disaster? I often would cut my own hair a few days after my appointment to try and even things out. My latest stylist was extremely good right out of the shoot, and we are growing out a prior layered trauma. She is an excellent listener and communicator.

      This is such an insightful comment. Thank you for taking the time to leave it. Cutting curly hair can be a challenge for a lot of people and curls can be so individual to the unique person so a stylist really needs to understand angles and growth pattern to be able to nail it. Tip, look at old pictures of yourself with different hair lengths. I've had a bob, shoulder length and very long hair throughout my life. I rated how well the length suited me as well as how comfortable I was with it. I could then conclude that collarbone length suits me best when straightened but naturally my hair is wavy so a few extra centimeters below the collarbone would give me the ideal length for my go-to everyday wavy hairstyle.
    I went from waist-length hair to shorter than I've had for many years and it was amazing, it had more volume, the waves looked nicer and it was easier to dry.

    FANTASTIC advice!!! You are a hair GURU!! it's so hard for most of us to appreciate our own unique beauty - we should and be our best self!!! I totally agree with all of your advice. Recently, I went to a new hairdresser....I stated ahead of time, my hair is thick and has a wave, it will shrink when cut, and I do not want it angled to the front. He must have had an off day, did a super deep angle cut, WAY TO SHORT in the Back!!!! This is the worst cut ever....and I have an oval face! He *did not consider texture....or my style*. I am not a precise angle cut type......and I could not wear it up for 6 months!!! It keeps falling forward, even when I style it, its top heavy and will not lay well. I've never had this problem before, as I am lucky to have nice healthy hair...... So people LISTEN TO THIS WOMAN, and TAKE HER ADVICE! Hair is a big deal, because it's part of your personality!!

    I am almost 70 and still wear my long hair in a ponytail or up. I also color it to cover my gray hairs. I have already decided that I will be 100 and have a my hair in a long braid. It bugs me to have my hair in my face even though it looks good down. The funny thing is that I wore my hair either short or in a bob for most of my life exceot for the last ten years. During a financial crisis I could not afford to cut my hair so I just let it grow and that is how I ended up with long hair.

  • @Sidera17

    Yes, thanks for validating us ladies who want long hair ~so we can tie it up.~. I look terrible w short hair, anything above jaw-length, but also have a chronic skin and scalp condition that make it difficult to wear long hair down often. But it is about personal style-- I've tried everything from a buzz cut to pixie cuts to bobs (for both fashion and the medical condition) and I know what looks good but also feels like my style. It's collarbone to bra-strap length hair. I'm willing to do the extra work and effort because I did not look or feel like myself until it was back to that length. Hair is so important.

    Wow… I’m still processing all this wisdom!! You answered a lot of questions I never knew I had, validated what I keep saying about my own hair length, and nailed it so hard about styling. I gained a lot of weight a couple of years ago and found that the styles I was wearing just made me look worse. I went long and wavy and loved it (with wigs!). I won’t wear my shorter ones that hit at chin level and keep having to justify myself to others who previously had their favorites I wore. I had one style that was my “signature” look. But no no no now. I hope I’m able to lose the weight and lose all the fat around the jaw and neck. Maybe I can wear that beauty again! I also really like how I look in my natural hair when it is up. I feel so understood now!! Wish you were my stylist!!! I don’t have one anymore. Thank you, Gabi, great explanation!
    My hair is fine, straight, healthy and thus too slick and smooth, no texture at all, means no volume, no good fixation, no "bounce". Though the density is high, so when I had it long and braided it, my braid would be very thick! Today I'm thinking of getting a short haircut (not to a pixie level! lil longer to allow me style it in a different ways). And if I'm getting it right from your video, that would be good for my hair!

  • @raindrops21_9
    @raindrops21_9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    What terrific insights! Another thing to take into consideration is that your hair texture can (and usually does) change as you get older. When I was in my 20s I had lots of fairly straight hair with a slight wave. I was able to have shorter hair back then because it sat well at that length. As I'm getting older I can't have those shorter hair cuts because it's becoming a lot more curly and I need the weight to keep it looking sleek - so, what may have suited you 10 or 20 years ago, won't necessarily work as you get older - sigh...

But having fine textured, very straight hair that needs a lot of styling to look presentable with those cuts...it's a no no for me. The biggest misconception is that short hair is easier and more practical. In what world? It takes two seconds to put long hair in a ponytail or just put it up. When my hair was short I needed to wash it every day, blow-dry it forever, use a ton of product etc.

    I have fine, straight, long hair, an oblong-ish face and I never style my hair, I'm just too lazy for that.
    The struggle is real. I don't consider cutting my hair short but I would love to know 2-3 very easy every day styles that I can do and don't feel bored looking at myself in the mirror every single day with the same just straight, hanging hair.

    I think I have an oval face, my look alike celeb is liv Tyler, but the haircut I hated was like super super short pixie, it just emphasised any fat I had under my chin, which doesn’t go away entirely unless I’m like a size 8 and don’t eat a whole lot, like I’m talking living on salads, and I have d cups and an hourglass figure so it just seemed to make me look more bulky. Thought I would look cute but hated it, grown it out for 6 years and now I have nice long hair down to my waist

    I have a 2b hair wavy and a pixie. it takes me 20 min to dry my hair and it's thick air drying takes me 4 hours . I wash my hair every other day so it doesn't get stripped of natural oils. Take me longer to wash put my face care treatment on and do my make up than do my hair.. I always look for people with my face shape and hair texture before getting a cut. However I do miss my 20s cheeks . They just up and left . Now my cheek bones are very prominent and sharper looking so I'm trying to soften them with my haircuts a bit

    This was one of the most informative videos about hair styles I've seen in a very long time. It was perfectly timed because I have long hair and was thinking about whether to cut it. Your comment about, maybe you wear your hair up NOT because you're lazy but because you LIKE the way it looks up, really resonated with me. It was like a lightbulb turned on. I do like wearing my hair up!

    I was absolutely meant to find this video! I’ve been going back & forth deciding, do I wanna get my hair cut or do I wanna keep it longer, so I can wear it up in a bun, as I always do?? I never wear it down long, as I’m 67, and my hair worn down, gets me too hot, on my neck & I am always sweating with it down!
    Unless, I cut it in a short bob or a pixie! But, the bob I wanted now, is the very straight, blunt style. My hair is really thick & naturally wavy!! Like your sister, I’d probably regret it after getting it cut, because I’d have to wash & style it, all the time! And…get it cut every 5 weeks, or so!
    Your video has helped me to be more realistic in regards to cutting my hair, now!
    Thanks so much for your advice!

    This helped me so much, thank you, I just subscribed, nice to meet you Gabi!! I thought about getting a bob, it's been long for about 6 years with trims in between. I've been wearing it in a ponytail but would prefer to wear it down with an easy style. Now I know exactly what I want to do, a cut just below my chin for an easy summer style. My hair has natural waves and I'm lazy LOL, if I let it air dry it will be wavy/thick or if I put it in a bun while it's wet, after a couple of hours it will have spiral curls when I take it out of the bun, yep lazy girl style haaaaa. My face shape is oval, I've had bobs in the past, it didn't look quite right, now I know why so thank you again! Have a great week!

My hair is also kinda wavy but not everywhere and my hair is dark and my skin really pale. This is something I'm struggling with so hard! My hair is fine and thin and currently waist length. While it doesn't look "bad" I just never do anything with it. I want to cut it into an edgy shoulder length bob but exactly as you said, I'm not the type of person willing to commit to styling my hair every single day 😩 part of me thinks I don't do anything with it anyways so just chop it off, part of me thinks if it's cut it will look even worse.

    • @luluah1198
      @luluah1198 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was exactly the same in my thoughts and my hair is the same. My hair is super straight shiny and fine but always had lots of it. Changed a bit hitting my 40s in terms of volume.
      I also used to
      Clip it in centre only 20 yrs and another 20 bun stick . Reached 40s had enough of hip length.
      Never cut my hair except once and never this short . I Wanted pixie decided against it, high maintenance styling . I wanted 5 mins or less lol. Hairdresser said bixie cut a very short Bob . I got lots of texture , slightly longer to front , really
      Slight . Long bangs because I have a diamond face . Looks gorgeous and made me look younger . I wasn’t going for a youthful look but I noticed it as soon as she dried my hair .
      I only hair dry once a week with volume mousse looks fantastic . And other days of the week I leave as is with or without a clip looks neat. Only needs 60secs or less fo comb I’m not prone to knots . Suits me I’m lazy and busy with children 😂
      In 8 months it’s now up to my shoulder . My hair doesn’t grow fast but I didn’t expect it to reach my shoulder this quick . So I’m going back to have it short again. I love the volume too much and texture. Makes a change to sleek look.
      Look at Pinterest for ideas and ppl with similar hair to you save photos . Decide on short or long bangs depending on forehead height and face shape . A good hairdresser and you can’t go wrong with a Bob.
      Even for someone like me with slow hair growth , if you don’t like it within a few months it will grow out a bit and look different .
      Seeing as I’m against chemical hair dyes , styling is the next best thing for me.
      Pin curls over night with Bob look super cute also. See 1920s curly and wavy bobs
