MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER BURNOUT is real and you may be wondering “Is it worth it to be a Psych NP in 2023?”
MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER BURNOUT is a phenomenon where healthcare professionals experience emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a decreased sense of accomplishment in their work. It is a result of the long hours, heavy workloads, and emotional strain that come with caring for individuals with mental health needs. This burnout can lead to decreased job satisfaction, a decrease in the quality of care provided, and even the departure of professionals from the field.

However, this situation presents a unique situation for more opportunities for psych NPs (PMHNPs). PMHNPs are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who specialize in mental health care. They work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to individuals with mental health needs.
With MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER BURNOUT on the rise, there is a growing need for psychiatric nurse practitioners to step up and fill the gap in mental health care. As more providers experience burnout and leave the field, PMHNPs can take on more responsibilities and provide much-needed support to individuals with mental health needs.
In addition to addressing the need for mental health care, there are several benefits to becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner. PMHNPs have a high level of autonomy in their practice, which allows them to make clinical decisions and provide care independently. They can also work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practices, and have the flexibility to work full-time or part-time.
Furthermore, the demand for psychiatric nurse practitioners is expected to increase in the coming years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment of nurse practitioners, including psychiatric nurse practitioners, will grow by 45% from 2019 to 2029. This growth is due to several factors, including an aging population, increased access to healthcare, and a shortage of primary care providers. Although a smaller subset of nurse practitioners, opportunities for psych NPs will grow proportionally.
In conclusion, MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER BURNOUT is a serious issue that is affecting the mental health care industry. However, it presents an opportunity for psychiatric nurse practitioners to step up and fill the gap in mental health care. With their specialized skills and training, PMHNPs can provide high-quality care to individuals with mental health needs while also benefiting from a rewarding and in-demand career.

I'm looking into this field but I've seen on forums that there could be an "oversaturation" of Psych NPs given the current market soon. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks for the content!

Joe, you are thinking the right way about this career change. First, thanks for watching and commenting. The “saturation” will depend on your location. It was the lack of psych NPs in my area that, in part, led me to my decision. Watch this video “The Best NP Specialty for YOU! | NP School | PMHNP School #PsychNursePractitioner 🤔”

What did you do prior to this?

@hannahberden5080, thanks for watching and commenting. Before becoming a nurse I had a career as a corporate sales executive and small business owner. After nursing school, I went right into working in the ER, where I have been for the past several years. Let me know if you have any other questions.
