    What you said about the outrageously high price for the FilmicPro subscription in the beginning makes sense. When they finally “settled” on $50 a year, they were hoping for a “that’s not so bad” response. ProTake is $19.99 a year so, that’s even better than $50 a year. I even like PT better.

    If this is going to subscription, it better come with all of the cinematography kit and open up the whole app for that.

    I just upgraded to 7 yesterday without knowing it's going to be subscription based. I should have been informed before upgrading. I had to downgrade to 6 and lose the saved profiles in the process (it's actually a new install along side 7 - which i then uninstalled).
    I wonder how the weekly subscription works. I find that option more appealing than the yearly subscription. I only use filmic pro when i travel, like 2-3 times/year. So I'd only pay for the week that I'm using it. I'm afraid I'd pay for a week and then have to remember to unsubscribe before the week is over or something...
    LE: I actually bought FilmicPro twice (with the extra package. or was it just that and the actual app free? i don't remember) because i switched from Android to iPhone...

      @BlakeCalhoun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that’s been confusing for some other people as well. The downloads that is to V6. Seems they should make that clearer.
      The weekly is probably a good call for that and i’m not sure whether it’s a manual cancellation or you can set it to cancel. But I think a lot of people will choose that in your situation.

    Before I bought Filmic Pro I emailed them to ask if the purchase would include an upgrade to V7 and this was their response:
    “Thanks very much for writing in. In the past, we've worked to ensure users have access to free updates of successive FiLMiC Pro releases. This is currently our intention for FiLMiC Pro V7, including the Cinematographer Kit in-app purchase. I wish I could give a more decisive answer at this time, but rest assured we'll certainly do our best to grant access to free updates as long as possible and this will likely include V7.”
    This was back in 2019 when I thought V7 was just around the corner (haha). I guess three years isn’t bad considering the price, but I don’t use the app enough to justify paying for a subscription. I’m not a pro… but I have to assume that a very large percentage of their customers are just enthusiasts like me who tend to lose interest after a while and revert to the stock camera app most of the time for convenience. I wonder what kind of market research they did before making this decision and if maybe the previous owners put the best possible spin on it before selling.

    • @BlakeCalhoun
      @BlakeCalhoun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha, that is funny they’ve been talking about V7 for a long time. I thought the same thing back in 2019! I agree about market research, etc. I don’t think they did much. They being Bending Spoons. While lots of professionals use the app, overwhelmingly, it’s going to be more enthusiast/hobbyist, especially those who don’t make money from it.

    That’s me done! I will not (and do not ever) pay for subscriptions. I no longer use Adobe after many years as a Photoshop professional. I just can’t afford all of the subscriptions and it’s getting beyond a joke now. I’m so fed up with this nonsense.

    £50.99 in UK. Impossible for the occasional user. £25 perhaps.

    More of an off-topic, but because you mentioned it: The "Smartphone Cinematography 101" course is absolutely awesome. I learned a lot and can use most of it with my mirrorless camera as well. If you ever produce an advanced course, I'll click "buy" immediately.

    • @BlakeCalhoun
      @BlakeCalhoun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear, appreciate it! I’ve had a advanced 102 course in the works for a while, just haven’t put it all together yet, but that is definitely in the plan.

    I also think with subscription models on all software and apps is that the providers price high because they want to get their money’s worth for heavy use, but a big chunk of people are very light users. Adobe is the worst £20 pm for premiere pro if you only play around maybe making one very short film a month, as opposed to near all day usage. Plus if you subscribe to the photography package you get premiere rush included, but you can’t synch with your devices without a subscription, which is nuts. it’s become a real racket and as I’m at the start of my film making journey, I’m just not going to even start with filmic pro.

    I've just gone through the update to version 7 and was quite excited to think of the possibilities ... until I discovered it's not possible to download clips unless you have a subscription.
    What the? I feel ripped off and I suspect I'm not the only one who feels this way. So I've reverted to the Legacy Version. It was either that or delete the entire application.
    While I'm sure the subscription model has its fans, I'm not one of them.
    Although I'm not angry about this switch to a subscription model-I mean, really? What's the point?-I am though disappointed that Filmic Pro thinks its OK to treat its users like an ATM, especially when Filmic Pro is a premium application to begin with. I'll stick with the old version, thank you.

    • @BlakeCalhoun
      @BlakeCalhoun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it took many by surprise for sure, but the V6 legacy app isn’t going anywhere, so I’m glad it’s still available for those that aren’t subscribing.

    If it has better log setting I would pay $30 for it or even 50. But no subscription. No way.
    I think a lot of ppl who uses the app are hobby filmmaker. I don’t think I will pay for subscription since I don’t use every week. :(

    I will not, I hate just the idea to pay a subscription.

  • @Fobes

    It should be a separate app when switching from 1 time purchase to subscription. This make me very hesitant to purchase any other apps as well if they are more than a few dollars because they could do the same thing.

  • @ToddDeSilva
    @ToddDeSilva ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s really a shame, I understand why, but after buying the full program, cinema add-on and the remote/DoubleTake addons, I just don’t use it enough to justify that subscription cost. It’s bad enough I have the full Adobe suite and don’t really make money from it 😂

  • @JBRose
    @JBRose ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve already uninstalled the app. Not looking back. Upset to have paid the premium and invest the time to learn the app but my view is to move on to a more trustworthy partner. Already had worked with Beastcam, so will go that route for now… yet a number of other great choices are already out there.
    With regard to subscriptions, I’m ok if there is value. My Adobe photography subscription allows me to work mobile, sync to the cloud and pick up on my desktop to finish the work, saving hours of time while traveling. This is very valuable to me. While I don’t have the GoPro subscription, they also offer unlimited cloud storage which provides a form of file backup on the move while easing access to files for editing. Filmic doesn’t offer anything close in terms of additional value and their price is outrageous regardless.

    It’s funny, I was on the verge of buying FiLMicPro and start learning it (for use on my own YT channel) right about the time the news broke they were going subscription. I was kinda glad I hadn’t taken the plunge. I don’t make ANY money off my YT channel right now so paying $49 dollars a year makes no sense for me. I’ve been hearing good things about BeastCam so that is likely the direction I’m going to go.

  • @WillNewcomb
    @WillNewcomb ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You talk a lot of sense! The subs option means the death of Filmic Pro for most people. The niche 10% perhaps, but death for its widespread use.

  • @kevinl157
    @kevinl157 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m not angry about it. I’m not happy about it either and will not subscribe right now. I’ve been testing BeastCam and like it. I’m also looking at CinemaP3 which has some cool features but I have had some out of sync audio with it.

      Personally, for me I will subscribe as I use Filmmic Pro numerous times throughout the week. Trust & believe I'm not happy about it however if it's truly 50$ & stays that amount then it's worth it. It's a great App that I enjoy using & works great. So,I'll suck it up & pay.
