    I’ve been using Campho Phenique on my pads for several years and it works wonders to prevent stickiness and provide a better seal - definitely can be hard to find as many stores seem to stock the gel only. I second Roman’s suggestion to buy some higher quality pipe cleaners from a tobacco shop.

    Another good way is to take a $ bill and put it on the sticky pad where it meets the tone hole. Close the key and pull it out. After you do it 2-3 times, your pad won't be sticky. I used that method to fix by sticky bis key as well. Use a dollar bill because normal paper will rip and not come out.

    I have one strong recommendation for this remedy (as I was also recommended it)! If you purchase actual pipe cleaners (used for cleaning tobacco pipes) then there will be no residue/fuzz left behind, as can happen with arts and crafts pipe cleaners. I'd suggest just ordering them off of Amazon. Kick ass in Miami!

    Yeah the smell.....this guy I went to school with always smelled like that....of course only when he was playing his horn. Ew.
    I tell you though....I made some "key leaves" and it has greaty helped my sticky key problems. Keeping the keys open I think lets them dry and also lets them last longer I think. Since my repad lile 5 years ago, I have had to replace only my palm keys and my B pad. That's it. Once a month I run a leak light and fix a few things myself. But I always have my horns playing at their best
    ...mainly because of that key leaves thing I made.

    Pipe cleaner (dry) is good for keeping octave hole on neck clear. I clean mine once every couple of weeks, just out of habit - takes 5 seconds. A few years ago I made some key leaves out of semi-soft packing material - does a great job of drying the sax and it’s free. Never had sticky pads since

  • @TheVoitel
    @TheVoitel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok, some points:
    1) Do not use that stuff. The only thing you are doing here is oiling the pad with white mineral oil. White oil in food quality is used as a laxative and can be bought in considerably larger sizes (8 or 16 floz) for somewhat 4-10$ per liter. All the active ingredients do not do a thing. It’s just wasted money.
    2) Oiling the pad *can* help to fix issues with sticking, but you should be very careful when applying. Instead of pipe cleaner I’d suggest using a (flat painting) brush or even just some cloth slightly damp with oil. You do not want to soak the pad in oil, because you do not want to oil the felt, but just the surface of the leather. Oiling the pad will also have the effect of protecting the felts from water.
    3) There’s more to bad pads. The clamp will alleviate problems of the pad distorting when drying out, but on the other hand, it will prevent the pad from drying effectively. After playing your pads might be really moist, and they *should* dry a bit. They should not dry too extremely. So I guess if you do not play for a while, these things make sense, but you shouldn’t put them on your Saxophone immediately after playing. Eighter dry the pads with some cloth, or let the Sax stand half a day to a day for the pads to dry, and then put the clamp on.
    When the pads do not dry, you may get different problems, that is, the felt will go bad more quickly, you might get mold on your pads, and of course, they will start to stick.
    Storing the Sax with pressure on the pads will shorten the life span very dramatically when the felts are moist, and before oiling the pads, make sure that they are well dry, because else you will trap the moisture inside the pad.
    4) Stop showing off, with those overtones of yours, we’re feeling bad enough already!

      I think I am just gonna delete this video soon haha i am having more luck with yamaha pad cleaners

    • @TheVoitel
      @TheVoitel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Saxologic Damn, that was fast. As expected, you not only play fast, but you also reply fast ...
      My strategy against sticky pads is just taking a piece of cloth, putting it into the key, slightly press the key down and pull the cloth out. This will clean the pad nicely and also cleans the edges of the tone hole. After a week or so you do not get sticking keys any more.

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh ok. I am interested to hear a conversation with you and Ken regarding the clamps. I had these same rebuttals you made and he convincingly shut them down

    • @TheVoitel
      @TheVoitel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Saxologic In my opinion someone who attributes everything to one problem is either naive or tries to sell you something. And pads going bad is something where you cannot just find a clear culprit, usually the way to a long life is finding a good way in between.
      One common thing on saxophones for example is the high closed pads going bad, i.e. the palm keys, the A#-key and such. These are pads that do get very wet, and if not dried properly they can stay wet for days or even weeks.
      The low C#-key does not have this problem because it does not get that wet.
      And if you just clamp the wet keys, basically all high keys will be in that danger.

    • @hansbrackhaus8017
      @hansbrackhaus8017 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If moisture is the problem, then would an waterproofing fluid be the solution?
      What about stuffing the horn with big silica gel packs between sessions? They are cheap and come if relatively soft bags, but can probably be put in a (fine mesh) wool sock, too.

Stay away from anything too "vintage" or really cheap chinese saxes as they can tend to have intonation issues that a beginner can't compensate for. Best to have someone who can play test any sax you are interested in.

      i second that.. People want a new saxophone that's good quality for that money, it just doesn't exist.. The saxophones on amazon for that price and less are OK yo get started but honestly, my YAS 23 is my alto for years. My main sax is a 10M but since I don't play much alto, it truly fits the bill.

    Brother, Yamaha pads are sticky, they just are. A Custom Z tenor that I divested myself of, drove me nuts. The YAS-275 alto still drives me nuts. They're solid instruments with nice keywork but are not worth the hassle, given they're not among the most rich-sounding horns today. The Pisonis on my Trevor James Signature Custom simply do not stick, ever. My old Mark VI pads never stuck, save for G#. If you love the horn, get repadded with Pisoni. I think most folks today will agree that key clamps are a bad idea. The pads most susceptible to wear are the closed G#, C, and C#, and the Key Leaves make more sense. They should breathe and dry naturally. They do not malform by air drying, that's ridiculous. Time for a new tech. Good luck in Miami- you're an amazing player!

    What´s in the liquid? They don´t sell it in Europe. Was that Mozart´s clarinet quintett arranged for wind instruments in the background?

    • @Saxologic

      Yes, Mozart clarinet quintet with a sax quartet accompanying the clarinet. And here is a link to it in amazon “Campho-Phenique Pain and Itch Relief Antiseptic Liquid, 0.75 Ounce - Pack of 3” www.amazon.com/dp/B000TQHU08/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_z6gmFb0MZ0WPB

    The only criticism I've heard for key leaves is that it can wear out your springs and consistently swabing your instrument will solve most of your problems with sticking.

    • @vladimirlopez7840
      @vladimirlopez7840 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Been using keys leaves for a few years pads look great and not a single issue with the springs. This is no different than the springs that normally hold certain keys closed. This is just the opposite it holds keys open. Spring steel is not affected by this.
