All student horns wear out within a few months. That’s largely why they are cheaper than say... a $7,000+ Selmer Supreme that I am saving up for (spoiler?); to allow you to play an affordable saxophone long enough to decide if you want to get serious and upgrade to a more expensive + durable model. I was notified recently that if you break your Jean Paul, Jean Paul is the only company that can replace the parts and fix it. A few repairmen have been cranky at me that I failed to realize this sooner (sorry!). However, I was also notified by many people that Jean Paul’s customer service is great and they deliver very fast. I’ve had multiple horns in the past break on me and I sent it to a local repair shop, waited WEEKS, yet it still never came back complete. There was always a new issue. So the odds are in your favor if you’re able to send your sax to the actual company that made your horn, so you can get it back like brand new. Just some things to keep in mind if you think about buying this horn!
I'm a full time woodwind tech and have repaired quite a few of these. All horns are the same, it's no different than working on vintage horns with no parts availability, If I can't order the part, I fabricate it. The repairs often times become more costly but the end result is always the same, the horn leaves the shop in working order.
The other thing I noticed about the John Paul is the key action seems very clinky and loud. The sound I think is very good for a student horn, but as you said, it would wear out in a couple of months and technique wise, a pro horn will have better, closer, and less audible key action than the John-Paul.
There's nothing supreme enough to spend 7K on any horn, especially a Selmer. If I was in the market for a new alto I would get a Ishimori, at $3700 it's the best value for your money hands down.
For life 's sake! My name is taiga. I'm Japanese. I'm almost a high school student. I play the sax every day. Your video is so interesting! And you're so cool! I respect you. I'm a fan. I am a returning player and recently purchased a silver Jean Paul. I had to have a silver one, they are so pretty! The first one I received had some problems (neck was too loose and was leaking air, among some other smaller issues). Jean Paul's customer service is excellent and I was able to get a replacement, which just arrived on Friday. I can tell that the neck fits well this time and i'll have it checked out by a local repair guy , but so far so good. It is beautiful and fun to play! The accessories I got are a little different than yours. In addition to the things you got, I also received a Rico 2.5 reed, a Rico H ligature, a cleaning swab, and the mouthpiece I got was labeled as AS-4 Optima. Anyway, even though the first one I received had some problems, I would still recommend getting one because of their great customer service. Tim was responsive and helped me through every step of the way. I had to wait a few weeks for the replacement because they were out of stock of the silver saxes. I feel like they are going to sell out again quickly now that you've made this video. :) I also ordered a Better Sax, so when I receive it..I'll have to make a video for the ultimate showdown between the Jean Paul and Better Sax.
@@1kitts well, I ended up returning it, but I'm not saying it was a bad saxophone and I would still recommend giving it a try. I liked how fast the action felt on it and I liked the ergonomics on it better than the Jean Paul. but aesthetically I liked the Jean Paul better because I love the silver plate. I had some problems with gurgling in low notes but I think the mouthpiece may have had a lot to do with it. I believe they upgraded the mouthpiece that comes with the Better Saxes now, so i think that will help. My local tech also found some air leaks, but those can be fixed with some simple adjustments. At the time, I was trying out a bunch of saxophones and ended up getting a Yani AWO1 for my birthday. I play alto and tenor sax, both Yamaha, and I recently bought a trumpet, from the brand of Jean Paul. It’s a very good instrument, and I would definitely recommend the company, because of the genuine care for their instruments, and the great customer service.
I just got my Jean Paul tenor sax in the mail a week and a half ago! It is absolutely amazing! I’m probably going to add their soprano sax to my collection in the new future. Great video Nathan!
Yamaha is a trusty horn , they survive from damages and repairments over the year quite well. Lets see how the Jean Paul performed after the same amount of time
Thank you for an unbiased view of another good solid instrument that is so well suited for a beginning (or possibly intermediate) student. If this horn really does have the construction quality and durability to provide a reliable instrument for a few years, then it seems more probable that it will provide a beginning student with a good platform for learning the basics and developing good skills and technique for the later years if and when he or she may decide that they really want to advance their skills and experience in music. It hasn't been that many years ago that the purchasing of a cheap Chinese-manufactured instrument provided far more frustration for a beginning student than renting a good quality (albeit more expensive) instrument. I wish such a comparable instrument/price point had been available 60 years ago, when I began playing tenor sax in the 7th grade.
I don’t know a thing about saxophone but after one video I am now addicted to this channel and I can’t help it, and I think it is going to cause some problems but I think I’m just going to watch your video for the next 3 hours for now

Another beginner/intermediate horn I’d highly recommend is Music Medic’s Wilmington alto. Music medic does some really good work and their intermediate horn is honestly competitive with many modern professional horns today imo
Their Wilmington beginner model is just under $1K and Out of Stock. The intermed is $1600. So you are comparing an intermediate instrument at 3x the price? Not an equitable comparison.
@@ws8080 which is why I didn’t really bring up the beginner horn too much and really emphasized the intermediate as an intermediate. The only real reason I brought the beginner/intermediate part was to establish a non professional horn. There’s always this conception in saxophone land that you have to drop all this money for a professional horn straight from a beginner, and depending on the person that might not always be the play. So having an intermediate horn worked on by one of the most reknowned saxophone repair technicians in the world for significantly cheaper than any professional model isn’t talked about enough. So that’s why I bring up an intermediate horn in the comment section of a beginner horn
Thank you for comparing this to other brands and price points! I'm researching horns to buy for my first sax and I thought I was going to buy an intermediate tier one just so I didn't outgrow it, but now I think I'm gonna get a Jean Paul! 💖
I ordered a new Jean Paul SS-400SP early in March. That's the silver curved soprano sax. After about a week of playing, the pad fell out of the octave key on the neck and I couldn't find the pad.. Instead of just sending a new pad or neck, Jean Paul sent me an entire replacement sop. I was used to playing a straitght soprano sax so, playing a curved one took a bit of getting used to.

Thank you so much for this video. I played clarinet in school so fellow woodwind here. My son (he's 11 years old) wants to play tenor saxophone. I wonder if jean Paul makes a beginner Tenor or if beginners should avoid tenor until they have experience with Alto sax? from my experience, I had a nice clarinet that gave a good sound and that made it more fun to play. I'd try to play my friends' clarinets and some of them were really difficult for me! I will add that I have had asthma all my life so that was a factor in my playing abilities. Can't imagine I would have stuck with music very long if my mom didn't invest in that awesome Buffet clarinet. All to say, I wanted to find a good starter instrument for my son so he too would have a good experience starting out. This was a very helpful video thanks so much!

Love your videos and your humor, have you ever thought about doing a review of the Yamaha CM (Custom series)? I cant seem to find any info about them on YT.
Hey, new subscriber and retired band director. What is your warmup when comparing your beginner horns? I’d love to see it and use it. If it’s in your sax method book, let me know. Thanks! Keep up the content!
I just ordered the lacquered gold AS 400. I have a Yamaha YAS 23 that is difficult to play right now. I think it's leaking a lot of air and as soon as I light check it,
Hey great video! Do you recommend buying Eastar for someone who never played saxophone? I want to start learning to play and start with an inexpensive unit
Hi i really enjoy your review videos Recently I've been looking at antigua saxophones and i wonder if you have ever tried one of their horns! Id like to know your thoughts
That is so beautiful that I want to buy one in silver when I actually want a Tenor to take my most loved Clarinet keys lower (plus nice to know I don't have to cover a hole that seems like cheating to me) 😁
Really impressive for that price! Nice video man, i will maybe recommend it to my students. May i ask you what are the tracks that you used as background? Was it you right?
Just bought it Brother! I've had the tenor Jean Paul for a few years and still marvel at how well it plays. So I had to have the silver alto........now how to pay for it? LOL Awesome review guys! Really appreciate it.
I was very curious about this horn. I play the trumpet, but one day I wish to pick up the saxophone. Either Alto or Soprano first. Needless to say, Jean-Paul has a definite new future customer. I've heard their trumpets are good too.
Honestly, you may not even do a review on this, but I recently bought the Jean Baptiste 290 AL Alto. It honestly sounds exactly like the Jean Paul Alto
Hey man, I love your channel! This video is quite helpful too, I've never really been drawn to pictures of silver saxophones before, but that one does look pretty amazing. I want to ask you - the music you have playing in the 'Showcasing 5 Saxes' section of the video - what is that track? I'm a big fan! Is it one of yours?
I bought a Jean Paul Tenor very very disappointing, I play a Yanagisawa Elite alto and bought the tenor to see if I would like the sound, my plan was to donate to a school after testing but it wouldn't even play when it arrived, long story short sent it back to Florida for free repair and within a month it's leaking again and shops close by won't work on them! So much for giving this horn to a student because they wouldn't know it was the horn and not them and keep struggling along! Maybe them altos are better but personally I'd go with a better sax alto if I needed an alto

Hey what’s the song(s) in the background around 9:30 towards the end of the vid?? Sounds dope I’d love to find it!! Also great vid as usual!!
@Keanan Whats the title/the video you are referring to? I am having trouble finding it.
@Keanan I may be tripping but it doesnt sound like the song playing in the background at 9:30 no? Appreciate the help so far but I am still confused.
What’s the music played in the beginning? Awesome 😊
The thumbnail is awesome! 👍🏼 And way to go with the camera angles too! 👌🏼
Love your videos and your humor, have you ever thought about doing a review of the Yamaha CM (Custom series)? I cant seem to find any info about them on YT.
So I looked up cheep saxes and there’s this brand called muslady… it speaks for its self.
I want to see you try it
Hey, new subscriber and retired band director. What is your warmup when comparing your beginner horns? I’d love to see it and use it. If it’s in your sax method book, let me know. Thanks! Keep up the content!
I bought the exact same sax for my first one and it was amazing
A big hug from Colombia, i love your videos!
I see the knife
"Nah, he will not do it this time..."
I was wrong
Great video btw!
I just ordered the lacquered gold AS 400. I have a Yamaha YAS 23 that is difficult to play right now. I think it's leaking a lot of air and as soon as I light check it,
I finally found what that sax part is from when they were testing all of the saxophones. It's from Scrapple from the Apple by Charlie Parker
What mouth piece did you use during the Jean Paul AS 400 review?
Hey great video! Do you recommend buying Eastar for someone who never played saxophone? I want to start learning to play and start with an inexpensive unit
9:15 this is the ph song by u and ur brother lmao
I'd be thrilled if you'd try a Herche Superior Alto Sax. On paper its better (and cheaper) than Jean Paul and has a better warrantee.
Hi i really enjoy your review videos
Recently I've been looking at antigua saxophones and i wonder if you have ever tried one of their horns! Id like to know your thoughts
what was the classical set up u played. it seems like a good exercise to train fingers
That is so beautiful that I want to buy one in silver when I actually want a Tenor to take my most loved Clarinet keys lower (plus nice to know I don't have to cover a hole that seems like cheating to me) 😁
You guys should try the cannonball brand. I had this brand back in 5th grade when I first started to play the sax
the cannonball vintage reborn sounds so nice
One of these days, he won't actually be joking 😳
Really impressive for that price! Nice video man, i will maybe recommend it to my students. May i ask you what are the tracks that you used as background? Was it you right?
Just bought it Brother! I've had the tenor Jean Paul for a few years and still marvel at how well it plays. So I had to have the silver alto........now how to pay for it? LOL Awesome review guys! Really appreciate it.
Next test will be the "bettersax" ? 😁
Wooooo damn that sax is purdy.
I'm so proud to be a saxophonist
Great sax and that silver finish!!!! Great review!
Will you make a Video of the BetterSax Alto sax?
Hey man, I love your channel! This video is quite helpful too, I've never really been drawn to pictures of silver saxophones before, but that one does look pretty amazing. I want to ask you - the music you have playing in the 'Showcasing 5 Saxes' section of the video - what is that track? I'm a big fan! Is it one of yours?
Just quietly, it's become my ultimate foreseeable sax goal to be able to play that! I'm about a month and a half in right now ^^
Yes, it was the final part of my brother ZackGrooves’ drum contest video!
@@Saxologic Niceeeee - that video is great too. Thanks for making me aware of your brother's channel, I've got a drum kit too afterall
apart from my school instrument, this was actually my first saxophone, so its neat to see a review on it
We come for the sax content. We stay for the jokes. And the honesty.
I got my clarinet from this company, and it worked great, lasted me the whole year, came with swab and was very high quality
Gteat video. Which is better, This one or the Better Sax Alto?
