When you’re playing middle D, try using C1 instead of the octave key. Typically on a lot of basses, the middle D splits the octave better on C1 as opposed to the octave key

    • @pukalo
      @pukalo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It happens with basses due to the long distance between the open tone hole and the nearest register vent.

You can also hit the low C# key along with a full fingered D fingering. Works amazing for me.

It's written in C4 like all the other saxophones out there. Remember that! (Not trying to be mean)

By C1 he’s referring to the D palm key just without the octave key.

Cool to see that sax again. I remember being assigned it my freshman year from Dr. Page, and then I ended up continuing to play that thing for the next 5 years.

Selmer basses are more like big bari saxes compared to large bore Conn or Buescher basses.
I've got a Chinese (JinBao) SA80II copy bass from Gear4Music which is a tenth of the cost of an SA80II and plays very well considering. The same Chinese basses are sold for a lot more than the £2400 I got mine for, so shop wisely instead of paying in excess of $8000 for the exactly same thing.
I have to use the palm/high D key for a clean middle D, but MusicMedic have experimented and invented a fully automatic triple vent 8ve mechanism with a designated 8ve vent for a clear middle D without having to use special fingerings for that note.

My 7th grade year i played alto sax, and my 8th grade year i switched to bari sax, and my 9th grade year i ended up playing tenor sax for marching and alto for concery, sadly my school doesnt have a soprano Saxophone or bass saxophone but if they did i would totally play it!

@@SpaceDude-lb8xo I've seen them used in high school ensembles and jazz band and even first alto in concert band doubling. Takes a little more skill to master. In most high schools, you would probably end up with a very out of tune soprano section of one decided to do that. The one exception I could see is perhaps an arts high school.

Dr. Page is absolutely right (of course) that the S80 Bari and Bass mouthpieces differ only with the chambor. I knew this but it never occured to me to try a bari sax Legere on my S80 Bass mouthpiece. 🤦‍♂️

the reason why the middle d is so hard to play is because the octave key is so far away from the d key and so when that tiny octave key hole is open and all the other keys are closed, it is really unsteady

This year for Christmas, I want a Tenor or Bari sax, they are both cool but I play the Alto sax.
Bari sax is in same key, but requires more air and may come with a Low A key.
Tenor sax is tuned in Bb, not Eb. But it has a powerful and rich sound.
Both of these require more air than the Alto sax.
    Venn Diagram lol.

To piggy back off @connorotoole, the issue with middle D isn’t you, it’s an inheritance flaw in the design of the bass Saxophone. With enough practice you can find a good voicing for it, but in addition, I find most people use Palm D as an alternate fingering. On alto it’s definitely more standard to use LSK2 over LSK1, but my vintage bass prefers LSK1. I would just try both and see what is most in tune and works best.

Bass saxophone is exceptional, especially in Classical music, and in Jazz. Especially especially ESpecially in Block chord solis. I will elaborate on that, by classical music, I mean good classical music. Anything from Christmas scores, to historically known compositions. You have to take the Bass seriously, that's one of the most important features to playing it more often, other people see it as a silly side piece. But hearing it in Jupiter years ago really piqued/🗻 my interest. I'd gladly compose a ensemble piece for Sopranino, Soprano, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baris, and a Bass. It adds that missing layer that Baritone sometimes lacks in...I mean it's an octave below Tenor which is incredible.
