    Very informative thanks, I'd like to know how the light meter re-calibration screw works. I've just purchased one of these cameras and will be using a new battery.

    Nice video. I have a TTL which I'm about to review. I started with the E which you mention. My TTL was made in 1982, so towards the end of the line. So glad you know it's a 'Zenith', not a 'Zenit', like so many Americans believe. I've subscribed!

    Fantastic camera. Still have mine handed down to me from my father in the early 90s.....still works perfectly

      that's the thing with these cameras. Some will still be working in like 50 years and some never worked properly, a real hit or miss. But when they work, you basically get amazing images out of them

    I had a Praktica MTL5B from East Germany in 1979 and aquired Praktica 30mm, 50mm and 200mm lenses for. Once I got used to it , the camera worked fine and delivered good photographs. I sold it to get a Nikon Fm, itself an excellent SLR, But when I think back,I miss That Praktica. It was great. I never owned a Russian camera.

      Thanks for sharing. Prakticas are a step up from the Zenit, but I stand behind my opinions that there are better alternatives. I'm in the process of releasing a video about Cosina cameras. They are the best cheap alternatives.

    I own one for some time now and I absolutely adore it, it was cheap and works really good... Yes, it's REALLY heavy, but it's allso really sturdy, you could make buildings with that and kill people and then continue shooting. It's allso really Loud, making photos in quite places is really annoying, because it's always the loudest camera in the room 😆 But I love it's absolute "manualness" (besides the inbuilt light-meter, whych is amazing)
    I use Helios-44-2 with it and It's amazing...and with combination with b&w film (I've got the best result from Ilfordpan-100ISO) it's amazing...
    I also broke some film, but you'll get used to it and won't let it happen again, just be careful and it will pay out :D

      Indeed, a Zenit is a camera with a cool factor.

    From what I've read, the exported Zenits were superior to the domestic ones, as far as quality was concerned. I imagine you could maintain that authentic feel with a domestic body and export lenses. Just wish they didn't skyrocket in price over the last two years

      I heard a similar story about the Ladas (the cars). My parents got one in Germany that worked perfectely fine until someone crashed into it. The next one was a domestic market and it had issues from day one...

      All official imports to the UK, were by a company called TOE. Their advertising state they stripped & rebuilt every camera before sale to ensure they worked correctly. The plastic topped Belomo made ET from the 90s are dreadful. They were made after the UK importer had shut, so mine were all made for the eastern market. They are rough & have light leaks (hence my guide how to find & solve light leaks on this model) My latest 'new in box never used' turned out to be one of the grey/green limited edition ones, although the outer box made no mention of this. It would never have worked (maybe that's why it lived in its box for 30 years) as the mirror lift mech was out of alignment. A simple fix for me, especially as I was taking it apart anyway, to change the prism rotting foam.

    But maybe you’ll prefer my comments in english ?

      Merci pour ton avis. Pour ma part, j'ai débuté avec du M42 avec un Cosina. Le souci étant que les Zenit étaient peu fiables et je n'avais pas les compétences pour les entretenir. Les optiques étaient fabuleuses, tout comme celles des Praktica.

    I found a Zenit TTL 1980 Olympics edition camera I am considering buying.
    Does anyone know if there is any difference in the cameras depending on the year? The camera in this video is from 1978.

    • @MrAnalogDan12
      @MrAnalogDan12  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup ! seems they made like a ton of these Olympic models.

    • @wibbley1
      @wibbley1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only difference I have seen is either on-pcb resisters for the later models or standard through the hole ones, which are found on most models. These TTL cameras (the first to have TTL metering) have a dimmer viewfinder than other models and also a blue tinge. When the iris is shut right down, it can be difficult to see the meter needle in the viewfinder. It was improved on the 12, after which they used LEDs on the 12XP, 122 and later models.
      Please make sure you change the prism foam, it has to be done on ALL Zenits, else it rots the prism silvering and causes the horrible vertical line in the viewfinder, which will only get worse unless the foam is changed. My most excellent guides on how to remove the top & change the foam can be found in the files section of the Facebook group, Zenit Camera Club.
