I was giving love to my 23 yo PS1 that my father gave me for Christmas, it's really special to me since my father died years ago, and I always wondered how to fix the sticky open button, this was really helpful man, thanks a lot!
I didn’t think this would work, I opened my console and it was clean, not a mark. I followed the steps and wiped it with IPA anyway and low and behold it worked! Fully fixed. ThNk you
Thank you! only took 5 mins to fix that jammed (opening) button, some sticky residue i guess was preventing it from being pushed to being stuck, but when i opened & unscrewed it all i couldn't see any kind of residue that would cause the button to jam & get stuck but glad i got it open & wiped it twice w that I-alcohol & it worked! THANKS!! PS1(1997) YR MANF. reads 25 yrs old only a year older than me.
Such a thorough tutorial 👏 I would like applaud the additional descriptions you made about whether you should feel resistance etc, at different stages. I wish more tutorials where as helpful as this!
You called the original PlayStation absolutely right!! Many people call it PlayStation one but Sony launched a smaller machine called PlayStation One lol!!😊
Hi! Have just watched this video of yours! Have recently bought an original PS1 from Ebay that has this problem. Thanks to your advice I now know how to fix it. Many thanks!!
Not sure if you’ll see this but I’ll hope for the best, Could you make videos on how to hook up: 1.Ps1 2.Sega Genesis 16-bit 3.Sega Dreamcast: Sports-edition Recently while clearing out my step dads garage to move in we came across him and his siblings old consoles (and we even think we might have a Nintendo 64 and NES System hidden away somewhere cause we found games, controllers, and cables) we’ve been able to bond over our love of vintage games and this video has helped us fix the PS1’s we found. I hope to clean all the consoles up and see if they still work soon and I thought you deserved a much larger audience and views on your videos so I just wanted to write my thanks to you down here for helping us out. The video was super helpful and simple to follow that we were able to fix them both in less than 15 minutes. Again just wanted to say thank you a bunch for the video and I hope you keep making them and helping more people enjoy vintage gaming for years to come.
Also skeptical but really glad I watched (as my issue seemed to be different and more to do with the spring) - however, I followed this and now the button is working fine! Big thanks
this console was very popular in Russia. its so nostalgic, especially this grey fat version. There were game clubs where we could play it for money. My favourite games are fighting force, vigilante 8, syphon filter and meda of honor. How about other countries? Was it so popular either?
So the power button is a physical switch with a spring that compresses and decompresses so if the button is sticking it either means it’s dirty and you should pop out the power button similar to the open button. If it’s not caused by dirt the actual spring in the Switch may be damaged.
It’s a Phillips (PH 1) bit. It nothing special and you may be able to find a Phillips head bit screwdriver that fits just lying around somewhere. I also put the link to the screwdriver set in the videos description.
Thanks for the tutorial. A bit of constructive criticism- you might want to be mindful of how much you say “go ahead and…” in the narration. Since you recorded it a separate audio voiceover, it’s an easy fix on an otherwise perfect demonstration.
If the tray doesn’t open on its own then there’s a problem with a different portion of the tray. It will be up top left near where the gears are when you’re looking at the inside of the casing.
I was skeptical because my unit was pretty new and not dirty, but I followed the instructions and it worked! The button was totally stuck and now it works great!
I’m not exactly sure where you’d find the exact one you need. You might have to try a few different sizes before finding one that fits. Check eBay possibly.
absolutely useless video. In most cases sticking beacaused by high friction between button central pintle and flat detail with spring, or because spring lost its resilence. cleaning doesnt help.
Hmmm, I’ve done this on about 20 PS1s and it seems to do the trick. Mainly because they’re all dirty. But I guess you’re probably right. Thanks for the insight!
Agreed, other potential issues, like lack of spring tension, should be mentioned as things to consider (even if also stated that they're outside the scope of the video).
@@pokegtagamer626 unfortunately the best way to repair a laser that won’t work on a PSX is to just buy a new one because the lasers can cost just as much as a working system. I’ll try to find something PS1 related for you though!
@@videogameexpert41 That's not true. It's very easy to repair a non reading laser. It's basically a screw that you twist to regulate the resistance. It should output something between 500 and 700 ohms to be in a good reading condition. Look it up on youtube and you will see how easy it is.
@@vinicius401 Yes you can adjust the resistance of the potentiometer of the laser. That is only a temporary fix however and eventually the laser will fail.

Most relaxing Brian Eno-ish background music ever 👌. Helpfull video too!
Thanks 👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I bought a PS1 for like $60 at a vintage fest and it had this same issue. I did what you did and it works now
Glad to have helped!
Fantastic thankyou!!! Years and years of having heavy objects sitting on my ps1
Lol well I hope this fixes it for you!
@@videogameexpert41 yep it sure did!
Wow way easier disassembly than modern consoles.
Sooooo much easier lol

Thank you so much. I Bought 2 second hand both had sticky buttons. Fixed them both with your guide and I've never took one apart before. Thank you

Cheers man really helpful video, my spring was also a little low on the hook which didn't help. It is 29 years old though
Glad it helped!
Can't wait to get stuck into some old school classics

I just fixed it. I watched three videos and yours was the most straightforward and simple
Just saved me so much money thank you friend!
Hi video helped a bit but it still doesn’t rise any suggestions great video

@@videogameexpert41 it’s not that it’s the same issue in the video could it be a problem with the spring
It can definitely be the spring. If it has lost tension and isn’t as tight as it originally was that can cause issues as well.
@@videogameexpert41 thanks for your help where would I get a new spring from
You’d either have to construct your own or get one from another PS1 lid of a broken console.
Same issue with the PS1 Slim, but it's on both the power and eject buttons.
A very similar cleaning can be applied to the PSONE
Can I just use dish soap and water to get most of the dirt out instead of isopropyl alcohol
Absolutely
I was skeptical because my unit was pretty new and not dirty, but I followed the instructions and it worked! The button was totally stuck and now it works great!
Bought some PS1 to resell and they need this fix first. Anything I might have around the house I could use instead of the stuff you used?
You can use soap and water if you’d like.
@@videogameexpert41 ah ok thank u
I thought that u had to replace the button lol😂
my problem is that it wont open, do u know how to fix it?
If yours doesn’t open when you press the button and you have to physically lift the lid then more than likely you need a new spring.
thank you
No, thank you!
Just fixed 3 Playstations.bought them each for 5 bucks. All 3 had the same eject problem. Cleaned the lens also. All work fine now

it looks like it didn't work I did everything
You more than likely need to find a new spring in that case
any recommendations? like stores or maybe internet?

Not for most. Perhaps you need more tension on your spring.
