    CALAF
    Non piangere, Liù!
    Se in un lontano giorno
    io t'ho sorriso,
    per quel sorriso,
    dolce mia fanciulla,
    m'ascolta: il tuo signore
sarà domani, forse, solo al mondo
    Non lo lasciare,
    portalo via con te!
    Dell'esilio addolcisci
    a lui le strade!
    Questo... questo,
    o mia povera Liù,
al tuo piccolo cuore che non cade
chiede colui che non sorride più.

@@estebanperezdeniz450 @Esteban Pérez Déniz Nope. Fleta was Toscanini's choice against Puccini's wishes, after Puccini died. Fleta sang 3
performances during the initial run of Turandot at La Scala in 1926, and never again.

      ´´
""A few weeks later, Puccini, about to die, has not yet finished composing Act III of the last opera: Turandot. Talk to Toscanini to whom he reveals that his favorite tenors to represent Calaf are Beniamino Gigli or Giacomo Lauri-Volpi. Toscanini is silent and Puccini realizes that his friend's silence is eloquent:
      -What do you think?
-That Calaf demands a voice full of melancholy
-Melancholy, melancholy! - replies the composer. What a voice has melancholy!
      - Miguel Fleta's! - Toscanini answers
-So you prefer that Spanish devil?
-If I have to be the one to choose, of course.
This is how Fleta played in Milan, in 1926, two years after the death of its author, the role of Calaf. The opera had finished a year before the author of "Cyrano de Bergerac", Franco Alfano. Toscanini was in charge of premiering the work of his deceased friend but upon reaching the third act, right there where he had remained unfinished, under the baton and told the public: "Here the teacher ended up. On this note he died" and left The lectern

@@estebanperezdeniz450 Thank you for providing the English translation.
Your anecdote does not contradict what I said, but contradicts what you said in your previous
comment. Puccini did NOT compose the role of Calaf with Fleta's voice in mind; Fleta was Toscanini's choice,
because Toscanini was in a position to decide, Puccini being dead. Also because Gatti-Casazza had told his 4 tenors in no uncertain terms they won't be reengaged at the MET if they sang the La Scala premiere; their earnings in NY were much greater than anything La Scala could have offered. Fleta disregarded Gatti-Casazza's warning, was promptly released from his MET contract and sued for a huge sum of money (huge for the time), and lost; that was the end of his operatic career in North America. Gigli had no real interest in singing Calaf and wrecking his voice in the process, his claim had been just for the sake of making noise in the media, so for him it was no biggie to oblige Gatti-Casazza. Martinelli was a bit more difficult, but he too heed Gatti-Casazza's warning. LV was given the MET premiere and sang the Buenos Aires premiere into the bargain, and went on singing Calaf for the next 30+ years. I guess the moral of the story is to know to pick your battles.
Btw, Toscanini was not Puccini's friend w/o any reservations, their relationship had highs and lows. In the last years of Puccini's life the lows predominated.

Manrico.. Chenier... Cavaradossi...
