    Thank you very much Opera for your great and wonderful work

    Lots of brilliant tenors here. I wonder how they would all sound if they used similar recording technology, which would make the comparison fairer!

    Man i just love Pavarotti's spinto sound here. Beautiful.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic2

      Pavarotti did not have a spinto sound, that would be Lauri Volpi. The problem is when it comes to recordings of lyric tenors, is that their voices are studio amplified a lot in this type of material. Spinto tenors should have loads of squillo. Pavarotti had squillo, but not close to enough to be a spinto. Spintos have loud voices. Pavarotti's voice was not that loud, it as lyric tenor sized.

    • @atizaries5512

      Pavarotti was a lyric tenor, not spinto, He shouldn"t have dared sing Nessun Dorma, after Franco Corelli.

    • @andymanland

      @@atizaries5512 well i did say he had a spinto sound , not a voice type. And he clearly did. His Calaf was not bad, although did lack of the weight for that role. To compare anyone to Franco Corelli is always a disservice to that person. But i do agree that Pavarotti, probably, shouldn’t have taken that role. But all in all Pavarotti had a beautiful voice and had a little bit of spinto in his voice.

      Corelli of course! Corelli and Lauri Volpi have the greatest vocal technique out of all tenors!

    • @toscadonna

      @@gr__mskI think Mario Del Monaco, Enrico Caruso, and Lauri Volpi had the best techniques. Corelli, who’s also a favorite of mine, had one technical issue (scooping) which wasn’t good for his voice. But he managed to put out so much beautiful music that most don’t notice the scooping. But it does hurt the singer to not be quite up in the chest before approaching the high notes. The throat takes more of the tension rather than the ribs and lungs. But I love his singing, so I ignore it, and let my teacher yell at me about my scooping.😂

  • @ZENOBlAmusic
    @ZENOBlAmusic ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Franco Corelli is by far the stand out, this aria shows more of the unique qualities of his voice, his voluptuous rich, lower notes. This is the problem with this comparison, it is all of low notes in this aria that makes interesting to hear, not necessarily the one big higher note. Joseph Schmidt’s voice also sounded more unique then the others, he had good lower notes for such light voice. Lauri Volpi did a great version, after him I would rank Mario Del Monaco. Vernetti was great as well, I have never heard his version. There were two very bad versions at the end, one unfortunately from Richard Tauber, whom I quite often enjoy a lot. But he did some very bad singing there, by only using open notes.

    Tauber is the best. His singing is even, pure and clear throughout this piece of musical art. He is balanced, composed. It is a song that requires restraint and power. Tauber achieved that delicate balance for this song.

    Martinelli was amazing in these performances at Covent Garden in 1937 it was recorded live with Both Favero and Albanese on different nights, but it was known in Britain that Martinelli was actually born in 1880 and not 1885, many singers knew this, his great friend and Colleague Aureliano Pertile certainly knew he was born in 1880 in Montagnana he knew Martinelli was Older so did Gigli Schipa and Lauri Volpi who always made a deal out of it, at 57 Martinelli sang very well indeed, my Father actually interviewed him twice for an Opera Magazine and he always smiled, Turandot was an Opera that should have been done at the Met for Martinelli, he was the first in 1921 on a visit to see Puccini with Toscanini to actually sing Nessun Dorma with Puccini at the Piano, it was agreed he would create the roll and Toscanini agreed, but of course Gatti Cassaza at the MET refused to leave him go to La Scala, Martinelli's friend the Spaniard Miguel Fleta took the roll. It was Martinelli's singing of Calaf along with Eva Turner as Turandot that made the Opera a success in London before this it was not Popular, even later in the 40's and 50's many yearned for the Past, certainly it was a opera that needs to be sung and acted.

      Fleta ha fatto soltanto le prime cinque recite, sostituendo LauriVolpi, per il quale Puccini aveva scritto la parte e che Toscanini non volle, causa vecchi rancori... Fleta non ha inciso nessuna nota di Turandot, purtroppo !
