Gotta let the curse's effects last forever, it's totally on the curse that he retired early because he was tired of dealing with the Lions. Let's spread this out a bit. We'll allow every bad thing ever to happen to a guy to count as the curse. Tom Brady's divorce? Madden curse Tom Brady's final season being the first losing season of his career? Cursed a second time for a second cover. Jackson Mahomes being a total douche? Madden curse. Britney Mahomes being insufferable? Second curse for a second cover. Dog fighting arrest for Vick? Double dipping the curse. Being stuck playing the rest of his career on the Cardinals? Madden curse hitting Larry Fitzgerald low on that one. And is it a coincidence that almost every player ever on the Madden cover has retired? Eddie George may still be playing today if not for this horrible curse...
Brett Favre wasn't cursed when he switched from the Packers to the Jets, he just passed the curse on to Aaron Rodgers when he did the same thing. Coincidence?!?!?!?!.... yeah probably
I think the reason people still claim the curse is real is that they extend the years the "Madden Curse" affects to about 5 years. For example, if Andrew Luck was on the cover in 2014, they'd claim his early retirement in 2018 was part of the curse
@@benchwarmerbran Even some examples placed in the cursed category (Culpepper and Vick in particular) could easily be argued not to be cursed. Culpepper had his best season in 2004 and Vick broke 1k rushing yards in 2006. They rebounded well for a few seasons after their "Cursed Year". Now AB in 2018 definitely should be in Cursed. Dude had so many legal issues flaring up in 2018, and it bled over into the team chemistry. There's a reason why Days of Our Steelers continued for that entire season after the LeVeon Bell holdout was buried at the end of October, and that reason was all the BS AB was involved in.

One could argue that the curse affects players in different ways. While some may see a slump in stats, others may have a catastrophic injury or lose in a key game.
It's football, so the chance of serious injury is already really high compared to let's say golf. Just the physical nature of the game is going to increase a players "getting cursed" odds. Then if you add in positions the odds go up even more, I am guessing running backs, especially ones that have played a long time, have pretty high odds of getting hurt. So when CMC gets "cursed" this year, it wouldn't surprise me given the position he plays, his age, past injury history and number of times they feed him the ball. The most interesting thing about the "curse" was how much Chargers fans wanted LaDainian Tomlinson to avoid that cover so much because of Shaun Alexander situation which is why Vince Young was on the Madden 08 cover
Days of our Steelers the 2018 season really shows how bad AB was not as a player but as locker room issue that held back the Steelers the year after the cover(or year of forgot)

That would just be literally everyone outside of the players on the Superbowl winner who never got hurt. That feels way too broad to apply to a Madden curse lmao
That is an unbelievably low bar. Injuries frequently happen, and the vast majority of teams don't go all the way. If that's what the Madden curse is, then that would apply to basically every player in the league.
It’s cooled down in recent years. Josh Allen, Brady, Mahomes, they’re all fine, and for the record, Lamar did win the MVP last year. I believe that the “Madden Curse” takes time for it to affect players but it doesn’t have to do with on field performance, the year on the cover. It could have to do with off-field issues. Lamar did get injured in the playoffs in the Madden 21 season. It’s difficult to tell whether it’s a coincidence but there’s something about being on the cover of Madden. I know you said you're limiting it to just the season they were on the cover, but I think if anyone should've had more of their stuff covered, it's Donovan McNabb, who not only said he didn't believe it was real before being put on the cover, but would proceed to have his entire career get destroyed after he appeared on the cover while still being in the prime of his life.
3:43 I'm surprised he didn't mention with Faulk that it's not like he got banged up and only rushed for like 700 yards that year, he put up 953. He was one good half of football from extending that 1000 yard streak
I think Madden has just played it a lot safer with the cover lately, mostly picking established stars rather than one year wonders. Odell was probably the riskiest cover in recent years in that regard lol
Peyton Hillis was more cursed by having to go from Mike Shannahan in his rookie year where he showed flashes of his talent to having Josh McDaniels his second year where he drove all the offensive talent out of town! Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshal and Hillis were all pro bowl caliber players that AFTER McDaniels took over
If you feature people enough times, eventually by statistical average bad things will happen to some of them. Madden just happened to get a lot of them at the start of featuring athletes on the cover. If CMC gets hurt this year, they'll be quick to bring up the Madden curse, even though him missing games is not an uncommon thing.
Another aspect of the "curse": Generally, people had very good seasons the year before they were put on the cover, often the best of their careers to that point. That's going to lead to a lot of "underperformances".

Limiting the Madden curse to ONE YEAR doesn't make sense. AB and AP both got hit the following year, and Madden doesn't only curse injuries that's just most common.
I think the Madden "curse" is more a product of the cover often going to young exciting players that still haven't fully established themselves (see Vince Young, Culpepper, Hillis, OBJ, Vick etc), as well as just often featuring RBs in general, who are always at the highest risk to drop off after a banner year because of work load and injuries.
I am going to say it and this is coming from a Browns fan. Getting Drafted by the Browns or the Bears is the biggest curse in football. I 100% know both franchises have ruined players that may have had good careers on any other team.

I know you only counted things that happened to the players the year they were on the cover, but I think the curse goes beyond that. If the niners win the super bowl with CMC being MVP - regular and SB - he will be a system RB.
Tbh, you have changed my opinion on the curse slightly. It has affected players less than I thought, but I still think it exists.
I know you only counted things that happened to the players the year they were on the cover, but I think the curse goes beyond that. Last year, the Bills had what is probably the most heartbreaking loss of the Josh Allen era. I think that counts towards the curse. Or 2018 when Brady lost the Super Bowl to a second string qb. I think that should count as well.
