    Only new to your channel, but soooo glad to hear of your 1930s passion. Many channels seem to focus on 20s or 40s, but I love the long lines and femininity of the 30s. I'm learning lots from you. And, though I can and do knit, I'm tickled pink to find crochet fits so well into the era; so much easier!!

      Thank you Sarah! Yes, I purposely learnt how to crochet so I could make jumpers. I wasn't interested in messing about making blankets, scarves or shawls as I knew I wouldn't use them. After attending a crochet workshop, I'd probably made my first jumper within about three months!

    Good luck with the knitting.The bow should be blue.I too love 1930s Thank for a great Vlogg and blog.

      Thank you! I actually made the bow in red in the end but have made it completely detachable. When I have a bit of spare time (whenever that may be!) I'm going to make it in blue too. Then I can change it whenever I'm in the mood. x

    I've truly enjoyed your other podcast. What I really like is the way you styled your hair, it is lovely and it makes you look very young. I've been reading your blog post, however, I think i really prefer your podcast.

      Alethia Lovetosew thank you! It’s funny, my mum says I look older with my hair styled in the 1930s curls, so it’s nice to hear otherwise.

    How enchanting to find a Vintage crocheting Gal! I have a 1930's repro booklet that I have just looked through again and hope to make a lovely crocheted top from. Your peach project is very interesting...all of them! You are so talented and accomplish much w/your time. Will subscribe for more and look for your blog, too! xx

      Hello! The knitting and crochet book was first published in the 1920's. (oops) It is by Bramcost Publications called Leach's Dainty Dresses and Jumpers. Some patterns are for the slim or "well-built" figures. LOL. The one I have in mind is for the "outsize figure"...and I am not slightly built either, so it may actually fit! =] Also, it is knit with the old shale/feather and fan knitting pattern, don't know why I thought it was crocheted. ? I'll be waiting until vacation in July/August to start it up and finish several things and play w/some sewing until then. I love that you are also a sewist. I really hope to see more of all your work/projects that you wish to share. My crocheting is very much household items and the least complicated as can be. Time to branch out!

    Just found you. I love crocheting garments, but I pretty much only use Japanese patterns. I also love vintage anything, but I have never crocheted a really old vintage pattern. Love your red hair! I'm a ginger as well.

    • @VintageGal
      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just had to look up Japanese crochet patterns as they're a new one on me! I'm guessing you work from a chart, rather than reading a pattern. Vintage patterns are almost always just written text, but I do have one from the late 1940s which is a chart. It's quite amazing to look at and one day I hope to try to make it, although I have a huge to-do list before then! xx

    • @bridgetkoupriaynov4752
      @bridgetkoupriaynov4752 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, lots of charts. I'm a visual person and found charts extremely helpful. I need to see what I'm making. If vintage patterns had charts I would love to try them out, but alas. I'll keep at perfecting my use of the Japanese charts. In my opinion their crochet designs are so much more beautiful than American options(I'm in the states). I have to study them quite a bit before I start, as you can't refer to any notes, as they are in Japanese, and unfortunately I don't read Japanese. Sometimes there is quite a bit of trial and error, but I 'usually' enjoy the challenge.

      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the encouragement Kathleen! I'm absolutely determined to learn how to knit. It's really silly how it terrifies me so much because I'm confident crafter in so many other areas. I'll let you know how I get on. xx

    • @masuganut2082
      @masuganut2082 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vintage Gal honestly I felt like knitting was my nemesis for so long. This year I was determined. I learned and it was slow going at first. I was knitting English style but got faster and was so tickled pink over it. Then a few months went by and people kept saying continental was faster and since my goal was a sweater for my husband I pushed to learn. I was so frustrated cuz I felt like I didn’t have enough fingers for it all.
      Now through practicing and being patient with myself, I am now half way through a sweater for my husband. (I actually hurt my hand cuz I guess I was “knitting too much”)
      You absolutely can do it! You will be so proud when you do!!! ❤️❤️

    Just found your podcast and loved it! I also subscribed so I can always know when you have new episodes up. You have sparked an interest for me to look into vintage crochet. I learned to crochet back in 1966 when I was 12 though didn't do a lot with it until about 20 years ago. I learned to knit 8 years ago. I would suggest an easy knit project, like a scarf, for you first project just to get used to the stitches. See you next time!

    • @VintageGal
      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Terri! My problem with me is that I have to make something I will actually use or wear and a scarf, shawl or blanket just doesn't excite me. I was the same with crocheting. I tried to learn how to do it several times, just making a blanket or a scarf and I got bored, so wasn't interested. As soon as someone showed me how to read a pattern for a 1930s jumper and helped me get started, my interest was sparked immediately and I picked it up so quickly. I'll get there eventually with knitting, it just has to be the right project to get me going. x

      Always knitting and not so much crochet. Good luck with your knitting by the way. I find it's not as quick as crochet but doesn't eat the yarn so much either. x

    Enjoyed your podcast so much. I like all the things you have made. I crochet too, but have not tried to knit. I have mostly made scarfs & shawls. I have also made a lot of purses out of t shirt yarn. Everybody comments on them almost every time I go out. I have been making blankets recently. I wish I could try garments to wear like you. I am afraid they would not come out as good as yours. Your hair is pretty, too.

    • @VintageGal
      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! You should give garments a go. I literally went straight into making them because I knew I wouldn't get much use out shawls and blankets. Your purses sound intriguing though. I can imagine they get a lot of interest. x

    Tunisian crochet try it you will love it!!!
    I love the gauntlet sleeve & cuff I have 2 cashmere sweaters with those sleeves I'm obsessed also with the beautiful look. We definitely are from a different era. Look up Hygge!!! It's a lifestyle!!
    I just crocheted the most squishy dreamy wrap that is so Hygge comfy in bulky yarn. Best present to yourself. Enjoy crocheting. Looking forward to your next podcast.
    See you soon! 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

    • @VintageGal
      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Maria! Yes, crocheting is much less stressful than knitting. If I make a mistake with knitting, and try and rip it back, I end up dropping stitches left, right and centre! I'm curious about Tunisian crochet, as well as hairpin crochet. When I get the chance I'll give both of them a go. x

    Lovely podcast, looking forward to many more! A suggestion: you may want to try continental knitting style. My mum taught me to crochet first and knit second (using continental style) when I was a child. At first my tension was way wonky, etc. but I don't remember having too much trouble actually picking up the knit vs. purl stitch movements. This might have been because the way you hold the yarn and needles in continental is close to how you hold the hook and yarn when crocheting. Just an idea...maybe it will help. :)

    • @VintageGal
      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Sonya! I will definitely look that up, although I do crochet in a way that isn't normal :) x

    Gorgeous finished objects and WIPS. Lots of ambitious plans for future projects too. I also cannot seem to manage to learn knitting. I think it's a left brain/right brain thing. Or maybe it's just an all thumbs kinda thing. But good luck!
    You do beautiful, beautiful work!!!
    The tweed yarn does not suit the red jumper pattern, imho. Now that plum (plume?) yarn would do it up nicely. I'm not much of an admirer of variegated colors. You know what you like though.

      Yes, I have done crochet ribbing before, but I particularly wanted it knitted for the pieces in the video to keep them more authentic. If I was using a modern pattern it wouldn't bother me to do crochet ribbing instead. x

    Love the top you are wearing, looks so delicate. where do you get your vintage patterns from? I haven’t crocheted a garment since the 1960’s. But seeing your pieces I’m tempted to start again. I’m in Cambridgeshire.

    • @VintageGal
      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kath, I can my vintage patterns all over the place. I'm very much someone who likes to hunt out original magazines and printed patterns and you find them anywhere, from flea markets to vintage fairs and from antique shops to junk shops. You occasionally find them in charity shops too. My advice is to always rummage underneath the tables in boxes full of papers, you'll never know what you might find! Alternatively there's loads of places online to buy PDF reprints of old patterns. Have a look at my blog post here - vintagegal.co.uk/vintage-craft/find-vintage-crochet-patterns/ - to find out where I get my reprints.

    • @VintageGal
      @VintageGal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for subscribing, it's much appreciated! The white top I'm wearing is actually an original one made in the 1930s, which i bought from a friend of mine. She loves 1930s knitwear too, so always keeps an eye out for great pieces. The threads I use are either DMC Petra in size 3, 5, 10 or 20 or Puppets Eldorado in size 6, 10, 12 or 16. Rico Essentials and
      Scheepjes Sugar Rush and Sweet Treats are others I've bought but haven't yet used. I'm not sure where you are in the world but if you have a search on Google for those you're bound to find some in your region. x
