    the panic attack scene made me cry. When I saw it and immediately recognized the signs of Puss experiencing a panic attack, the waterworks started straight away. I think the part that solidified this movie as good for me was immediately following Puss’s panic attack when he was talking to Perro and Kitty overheard part of it. In most other movies we would see Kitty miss out on part of the conversation and misinterpret the meaning about what they are talking about. But that isn’t what they gave us. They did have her miss an important bit of the conversation yes but what she did hear wasn’t misinterpreted. It showed her that Puss was different and genuinely regretted his past actions. She then used that information to be her better self. I love this movie

Instead they used that motivation in the most hearth warming, simple and effective way... "we are a family, even if you don't recognize, so we're going to make you happy and keep helping you get the wish". I LOVE IT.

Also a favorite part of mine and many others was in that scene were Perrito was helping puss and he didn’t say shit about being a therapy dog. He just did what he thought he should do. And the wolf let him go because the more Puss feared death, the more just Death felt in taking his life as his motivation was Puss was taking advantage of his lives...then wants to wish for 9 more because he wasted the other ones? Oh hell no. lol

    • @gsserviaki9168
      @gsserviaki9168 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heres the real reason, but i do like yours as well :)
      Death was after puss in this life to take him early, because cats have 9 lives.. which ticks off death. Nothing too much right? But its the fact that puss doesnt value his lives which angers death and feels like hes tormenting him. So he begins his chase, “trying to kill” puss in boots. But what was really happening be was instilling fear into puss, which ultimately leads to him valuing his life.
      To quote Death “I came here looking for an arrogant little legend…” that he wanted to kill. And he did. Without killing anything physical. So his goals were met, and now puss can live his life with full value, awaiting deaths much less violent return

    *SPOILER*
    The part of the movie that absolutely won me over, that completely upended literal decades of Dreamworks slapstick comedy ruining heartfelt moments was after Puss escaped his second encounter with Death. He ran and hid in the dying forest of his own imagination, and Perrito found him in the middle of a powerful anxiety attack, the sound of Puss’s racing heartbeat pounding through the theater speakers. Earlier in the movie it was foreshadowed that if Puss needed to feel better, he’d just need to rub Perrito’s belly. It was lighthearted and comedic for that scene, illustrating Perrito’s undying optimism. But it would’ve been so out of place here. I thought ‘oh boy, here it is, the slapstick shenanigans that completely ruin the gravity of a situation. He’s gonna whip out his swollen belly and smother Puss with it, Madagascar 3 style’. BUT NO. I wasn’t prepared for what happened next. What Perrito did was the most profound and heartwarming thing I’ve seen in animation in years. With concern and confusion in his eyes, but desperate to help his friend, he got close to Puss… and laid his head on Puss’s lap. The heartbeat slowed, then calmed and quieted down.
    This shook me. My eyes watered up and I silently cried. It was a moment that transcended cinema and found a way into the deepest most personal parts of my life. I too have a pup, and I too have found myself in a graveyard of my own imagination, ridden with anxiety, unable to move. And my pup was there to do *the exact same thing*. This here, this scene RIGHT HERE, sealed the deal. There would be no hijinks or tomfoolery. Even after the stunning fight scenes and amazing character designs, this here let me know I was in the middle of a masterpiece.
    This movie had no business treading these waters. But it does it so masterfully, and should be unceasingly praised for having the guts to do so. 10/10

      This is the best comment I've read so far concerning the movie. That scene was the moment I knew that this movie was something special. Not a cash grab, not an agenda, not filler, but art. True...art. How could an animated movie about talking cats marketed for kids be this mature and emotionally powerful? I fully believe that the people behind this movie put their heart and soul into it, and you can just feel it oozing out of every frame, and every second.
      I've had experiences with panic attacks during my youth, and they are not fun. After my first experience with one, I didn't have the words to describe to my family what I had experienced because it was just too intense and too alien for me to put into words. And somehow, an animated movie about talking cats managed to perfectly capture and convey that experience more than anything I've ever seen in my life...and that's powerful to me. To know that these people behind the movie get what I went through and to show it in such detail in a family movie was unbelievable and amazing. I love this movie with all my heart for that, and I hope more people see it.

    The Wolf (or Death) was my favorite part of this film. The way he is introduced by his whistle and his dark dark aura and color scheme, to his very sarcastic way, yet terrifying way, of saying to Puss *"I am going to take your own life because you don't value yours"* is done exceptionally well. He is definitely one of my favorite DreamWork villains of all time. Literally, every time he was shown on screen I got goosebumps just like Puss, and the way they made him feel Fear and how that it can also fear us humans is just amazing.
    The other characters were amazing as well but The Wolf (Death) is the one character that makes this movie so interesting, deep, dark, and meaningful.

      @@bewareking6458 You have a point, but he was Puss's villain for a while, until the very end when he was not because he started to value his life (only his last just like we only have one). In the end, The Wolf (Death) is more like an Anti-Hero, but he can be someone's villain too. A person like Big Jack Horner could have The Wolf as his villain since he is really The Villain I guess you could say since he was the only one who wanted something selfish, not to mention his lack for life in general except himself.
      Gosh, there is so much to this movie that the more I think about it, it's so excellent in so many ways. Truly, this movie will go down as one of the classics Dreamworks ever made.

    The thing about puss in boots that caught my eye was its animation style. As Disney sits around and pumps one animated film after another that looks like an Encanto reboot, Puss in boots has a unique animation style that looks like a mashup of classic 2d animation and 3d animation, kind of like Spider Man: into the Spiderverse. I love this kind of animation because it brings the modernity, functionality, and smoothness of modern animation along with giving the animators a chance to express their own unique art style with character design, backgrounds, and more. I genuinely love this move, definently recommend!

      I don't think "Encanto reboot" really fits here, as Encanto was not the first movie with that idealized and inoffensive style. The first that comes to mind is Tangled, but I'm fairly sure it's older than that, too... though maybe that's on the Pixar side?
      But yes, I agree. Other studios are branching out with unique animation, while it seems that for once Disney is lagging behind, too obsessed with their live-action remakes to try something new. I doubt Disney will die off anytime soon, but if they refuse to change then there's a chance that someone new will take their place as the biggest and best animation studio.

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@oranplan1630 I feel like Tangled style really suited the movie and especially for the time it was impressive but Disney has been playing it way too safe with their style. At least Pixar has been doing a variety of character designs with Soul, Luca, Turning Red, etc. strange world could’ve been cool if they really committed to the pulp scifi comic style

    • @pyraffin
      @pyraffin ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@oranplan1630 Facts. Then with the explosive success of Frozen, it cemented that style as the only style Disney would ever do again just to ride its own coattails of success for as long as financially possible. Hence the dragon in Raya just being Elsa's fursona. Sadly the style was set as the standard for 3D, every one else copying the style since it's been proven to sell and executives liked that.
      But they seem to be loosening their iron grip on Pixar to let them experiment on slight variations of the Frozen Style the last 2 years, though.
      Then with Strange World all they did was a slightly different style of editing/motion and the male's eye style (all the female characters are still Frozen/Encanto looking while male characters look like they're from Turning Red...), the essence of the generic, inoffensive, safe style was still there though.
      Everything rounded, smooth, soft, clean. Even metal. How do they make rust and concrete/stone look clean and soft?? Clothes designed simply as if they were to be animated in 2d then look bland and empty in 3d, lacking even wrinkles and imperfections. Faces stretch but barley scrunch or make any unappealing smear frames between expressions/movement. Squeaky clean from top to bottom, inside and out. Same for the environments. Evem swampy areas have no bugs, no where has any life aside from showing a weird animal for a single establishing shot, never to be seen again.
      Puss in Boots is SUCH a welcome change. Finally. Rocks look rough, things can be sharp, expressive exaggerated movement, expressions that hold so much, environments that are full and messy! _A new style!!!_ ANIMATION and all it can do!!!!!

    It’s a testament to how bulletproof the Shrek franchise is. The way they twist fairy tales into something different and how it joins SpongeBob with the meme pop culture makes it incredible

    • @corneliusmaze-eye2459
      @corneliusmaze-eye2459 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks to the success of Shrek, Animation in America has been creatively handicapped. Endless sequels, lack of new ideas and animations styles. Shrek is also Post Modernist in its artform, meaning instead of crafting new architypes, it derives its meaning from tearing existing ones down. Reference humour and meme pop culture is funny, but in 20 years it will date worse than its contemporaries of the time like Atlantis, Dinosaur, and especially The Prince of Egypt.
      It's easy to build stories based on critically undermining what makes stories an artform or convey a meaningful message, but when the whole industry follows that example, the talent pool gets smaller and eventually business people just copy and past their products and the public eat it up because they've been primed to by meme culture. Illuminations producing Despicable Me and Minions is a prime example of this. Furthermore, it shouldn't take Sony 5 ice Age films to eventually produce something like Into the Spiderverse. Very few studios and directors are putting in the time to create something new which in terms evolves the craft of filmmaking. Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Guellimo Del Toro, etc.
      This is also why films like Avatar are panned for alledgly being 'derivative', 'Pocahontas in space', military bad/ natives good', and 'White Saviour complex', because Avatar is not trying to deconstruct architypes and fairytales like all Post Modernist films do. Avatar is very genuine in its storytelling and message, because it's Modernist in its purpose. However, today's audience is Post-modernist and judges films as products of corporations, not projects of passionate filmmakers. Had Star Wars been first release in the late 2000's, it would've been successful like Avatar, but panned for being derivative of Hidden Fortress, Dune, and cultural appropriation of Taoist philosophy. Just look at how overly critical people are of Star Wars today. It's all become trash culture.

      @@corneliusmaze-eye2459
      You can still be genuine and create new shit and deliver profound messages and be completely serious even while deconstructing archetypes and tropes for fun. Heck, people actually like it when you re-construct them now, either unapologetically or with a small ritual self-acknowledgement dance. You don't necessarily have to undermine anything anymore, you can opt to reaffirm and cherish in a slightly coy and more mature way instead, and some smart creators made use of it, hence the "metamodern" and "post-irony" talk all over the Internet.
      What you can't do, however, is to do things in a blunt modernist way, because at this point it's just rehashed and _lazy_ , and all the critical panning you incur for this is thusly completely deserved. It's kinda unfair to blame postmodernism in general or Shrek in particular for greedily careful corporate approach. Postmodernist form does not and should not automatically warrant creative sterility and shallowness. Parasitic as it may be, in the end it's a form in its own right, just a slighly more complex shape, which can be much more than a funny false mirror.
      Now we've got plenty of examples of animation that tried to fill this form with something beside shallow mockery and won. Gravity Falls. Bojack. Arcane. Rick and Morty walks a dangerous line, but ultimately is genuine. And that's just off the top of my head.

Shrek etc take place in a world where fairy tales are silly and gross and comedic yet they each tell a real story within that world. So what if Puss in Boots is a Zorro expy fighting against a Goldilocks and nursery rhyme crime boss? Here's the story of how they confront their mortality and selfishness and either find the love around them or fall. The world is a joke but the story isn't. So, we actually get invested.

    Watching Perrito snuggle up next to Puss while he was laying there helplessly trembling with his heart racing made me cry so badly in the theater.
    I'm not even joking. Perrito is my favorite character in this film, and I kind of thought he was going to be my least favorite. It's the Brett Hand effect. He was so nice and clingy, you think he's gonna be annoying, but then you find out their backstory and man I'm myself teary eyed again. Why do I relate so damn much to nice people?? Why can't I relate to jerks 🤦

Definitely don’t rate them higher than some of their other movies, but I think they still have heart in them and their popularity does bring in funding the company can use on other projects. I really love Puss' characterization and development in this movie. He is a fearless and brave individual and he found identity in that. But in most ways, he took it for granted. He lived a life where his 9 lives were disposable, where there was no true value in them, until his final one.
    So, when the doctor confronted him on the reality of the situation, he hated it. Mocked it even. He's the fearless Puss in boots after all. What would his life be if he wasn't living in danger? But only when confronted by a bounty hunter coming after his life, and being completely overwhelmed in battle, where he truly realizes the reality and value of his 1 singular life.
    And this part of the movie gave me literal chills. The animation and visual team did an amazing job showing Puss' despair, with his hair standing up as it slowly reaches to his face, and how he was willing to go through a toilet to save himself. The lengths he was willing to take to live is so reflective of what humans would do to live, sometimes even doing morally evil things too.
    He wasn't fearless, he was full of fear. He wasn't Puss in Boots, he was a scaredy cat.
    Puss has a traumatic experience from that throughout the entire movie, with the wolf's signature whistle being a huge trigger for him, and it's such a menacing way of introducing him into the scene too.
    Speaking of the wolf, he's such a menacing and terrifying antagonist. His presence and character design are great, but what makes him so scary is his visual portrayal mixed with the voice acting. The movie wasn't afraid to not cater to kids and to not be limited by that. Which is a problem I have with some films, where mature themes aren't done to the fullest potential due to limitations. The way he effortlessly dodges Puss' attacks and instills fear into him is so memorable and impactful.
    Puss being haunted by the fear of death is something we need to take into consideration too in our lives. People love to live in the present, but also don't see the biggest problem of death right in front of us. We rather not think about it because it's such a scary reality. So, when life hits us, we're like Puss facing the reality of death for the first time. We're vulnerable and afraid. And not everyone tells people about how they're feeling. Some people keep it to themselves, which is what Puss did throughout the movie till he shows vulnerability and expresses his fears to Perro the dog.
    Even the most powerful people will still succumb to the fear of death when reality hits them.
    Goldilocks and the 3 bears were also amazing characters, where she was seeking for the wishing star because she doesn't have an ordinary family. By "just right", she wanted and craved for a human family. She used her foster family as steppingstones to reach her goal of replacing them, which is so tragic because she faces an issue of envy. When a person is clouded with envy, they aren't grateful for what they have, and would do what they can to obtain what they don't have.
    I also love the build up to the eventual reveal of her wish. Her appreciating the simpler times with the bears in their house was so heart-warming. It's the small things that often go unappreciated, like how she would hold this fairy tale book as a child wherever she would go, sleeping on comfy bed, drinking soup with her foster family, and so on. Sometimes, you just have to stop and take a look around you. You have a house to live that house's memories. You have food and water. You have transport to go to different places. You have photos with your families and friends that you can reminisce. You can even go beyond that and just admire the complexities of the world. How trees give you shade when it's a sunny day, or how the sky has a pleasing and calming colour, and even animals and how unique they all are.
    There are a lot more aspects that I really love about this movie but I'll stop right here. I definitely recommend watching it. Not only is it narratively nuanced, but the pacing of the movie is also good. Cinematography and choreography of the fights are so well done too, which is one benefit of the movie being 2.5D.

    Can't wait for Shrek 5. To see the trio of Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots back together again. Then see Kitty Softpaws interact with the other characters of the Shrek franchise.
    Namely Fiona and Dragon. Being honest when I first heard about this movie. I thought it was going to be another prequel that lead to how Puss in Boots met Shrek and Donkey.
    But I'm very happy with direction they took.

    I like how the last few masterpieces of film have been incredibly stylized animated movies. Puss in Boots, Spiderverse, How To Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda are all so visually distinct and regarded as great movies (I'm sure there are more, but they aren't coming to mind)

    I honestly can't recall the last time my heart was beating as fast in a movie theater than it did during the scenes with death in this movie. I absolutely LOVED the animation of this movie. It really makes me happy to see more animated movies strive to use that same kind of flare that Spider-Verse had, and take a more artistic and stylistic approach rather than go for something hyper-realistic. I really enjoyed the theme of facing one's mortality and found myself actually caring about each of the characters. This film has genuinely made me excited to see what's in store for upcoming Shrek movies and I can't wait to see other animated movies that really embrace their medium like this.

    Having just watched the film, I can confirm this movie is a banger! I remember not really caring when this was announced, but the talk of the movie made me want to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did. Really enjoyed the art style, and the villains were super enjoyable. Even the so-called weakest villain in Goldilocks and the three bears really captivated me with their crime gang humour and surprisingly deep backstory. Too much good stuff to say about it

That artstyle has been his trademark for years, and he basically single-handedly created the look of Spider-Verse. Unfortunately he's become an unsung legend in the animation world because he has gone widley uncredited for that.

    I got a chance to go see this film a whole month before the film launched nationwide during "Caturday". I knew from the very moment when the first big fight happened, to the big finale with Death that this was going to be something truly special, especially having watched it with such an engaged audience of families, kids and adults who grew up on these Dreamworks films who seemed to have loved it as much as I did. When I told my Discord friends about having seen it early, I immediately said the moment the credits rolled that they were in for a major treat come December. On par with Del Toro's Pinocchio as the best animated film I've seen this year.
