Can you please review The Crow, Crow City of Angles (that poor movie suffered the same fate as Cool World) , Power Rangers 2017, and Mortal Kombat 2021?
It was awesome! I liked it. Can you review Escape from Tomorrow, Pinocchio live-action remake, Escape from Cluster Prime, iParty with Victorious, Meet the Robinsons, Teacher’s Pet (2004), and Spongebob movies?
The reason Puss in Boots was compared to Velma was because both feature panic attacks and someone being comforted during one. One handled the experience with maturity and was heartwarming. And the other was Velma.
I think the reason why Puss didn’t realize The Wolf was Death was because he’s denied his own mortality for so long, he doesn’t acknowledge Deaths true identity until it’s almost too late. Puss knows he’s a threat, but not how much of a threat he really is
it also helps for the audience. I've seen many people, myself included, who went in blind and didn't know what the wolf was. Puss calling him a bounty hunter was enough for a lot of people to think he was just a really skilled bounty hunter. The creepy nature because he was a canine chasing a feline.
Eh, I think its much simplier than that. When death introduces himself, he does so with a bounty offer. Puss then thinks he is a bounty hunter, which....isnt too far fetched. As viewers of the events, its easier for us to see death as he is from the get-go...But being in Puss's boots....its extremely plausible to just think its another bounty hunter.
@@terranceaskew3165 In my mind I just thought of him as "the Bounty Hunter." As an audience member I think they did a good job of misleading us into believing him to be some form of Boba Fett. A bar scene, a wanted poster, not to mention that you expect the Grimm Reaper to be a skeleton, not a wolf. Sure he's in black and uses scythes as a weapon but that could just be a metaphor, you know?
Jack Horner really is an example of how to make a completely irredeemable villain in an enjoyable way. He knows he's horrible and takes pride in being the worst!
What makes him even better is that he is actually dangerous. Many funny villains are just this- funny and nothing else. Jack is both funny and threatening.
Death is one of if not the best DreamWorks antagonist ever. His whistle still sends shivers up my spine. I like how, at the start, Puss was bragging about having "never been touched by a blade." So the moment Death was actually able to cut him, Puss became a scared, anxious mess. It's the moment he realized that he's not invincible after all.
They fundamentally got trauma and it's aftermath right. You think you're safe something forces you to realize you're not and you've got to learn to live in the new reality or the fear destroys you. The majority of movies made for entirely adult audiences that try it don't handle it half as well. Masterful work on every level.
One of Death's most badass lines IMO is "Everyone thinks they'll be the one to defeat me. But no one's escaped me yet." Such chilling foreshadowing for his true identity revealed later on in the film.
"Damnit, you're Puss in Boots 2! No one's expecting you to try!" Which I feel is the most common point brought up. A movie that didn't need to try as hard as it did and the love comes across so wonderfully.
I wanna get into contact with the team and personally thank and congratulate them for going out of their way to make a movie that initially would've had little to no expectations raise the friggin bar and blow away people. I'm honest to god so proud in the work everyone put into this movie, its instantly become one of my top 10 favorite animated movies of all time
I think I read somewhere that the animators behind The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish were competing to see who could have the better animation. They pushed each other without any executive neckbreathing which helped make both movies turn out terrific.
Saw this about a week before Mario came out. Damn I had such high hopes for Mario and such little expectation for Puss n Boots...best I can describe it is two similar dishes served at a restaurant and PnB is the one with a splash of hot sauce that pushes it into greatness.
One line that made me laugh and caught me off guard was what Death says after giving up on taking Puss’s last life. It translates to “Why the hell did I play with my food?!” Something about seeing a character who was so domineering and in control throughout the movie basically rage quit and scold himself was very funny to me.

(I also am a house owner, and like traveling and hiking, before someone throws in a 'living in mom's basement' stereotype). I get it from my dad. He's 91 now, but he NEVER became bitter or a know it all. I actually have some people sometimes telling me to 'act like a 40+', but I always ask, what the hell is that? Do I continously need to complain about taxes, kids these days or the government? I'd like to spend my short time on this earth by enjoying it thankyouverymuch.
@@MisterCasket Same. My dad is "only" 70 but he's the same. As am I. There's enough bad stuff happening in the world (it always is). No need to add to that by being a cynic prick all the time.
Another detail I noticed: when Puss is at the cat house, Death doesn't even bother to harrass him, and if the beard is any indication, he stayed there for a while. Maybe Death thought that was a good punishment, or that Puss at least started to learn to value his life more. Death only starts haunting Puss again when he gets the map to get his wish to regain his lives, disrespecting death yet again.
My theory is that Death only appears in moments when he would have potentially died (the fight with the monster, the chase scene, the fight over the map, the wishing scene etc) and the only time outside of that was Death introducing himself to Puss for the first time.
That's what I always thought too. Death could have easily gone after him, but living in the Cat House seemed to be enough of a punishment. That's because he Puss clearly humiliated, unhappy and unfulfilled.
PIB2 had so many villain types, it was refreshing Jack Horner - Irredeemable Monster Death/Wolf - Neutral force of nature Goldi & Bears - Sympathetic Antihero
Death is not a neutral force of nature, he is actively looking to kill Puss because he is vindictive and spiteful. He already has a grudge against cats, and Puss is the worst of them all, not appreciating what he had. You could argue the opening is the perfect example of this: he doesn't die fighting the giant, he dies because he's addicted to the praise and adoration of the crowd. I'd say it's even possible Death orchestrated that one too, him watching there, and nobody can see him before the finale. Maybe Death cut the rope holding the bell in place.
@@SRFriso94death is suppose to be a neutral force....... but the arrogance and ignorance of Puss just losing life after life in sheer disrespectful ways, even Death has their limits on how many times they will be insulted. So he's now taken an active role in his job, and that's the most terrifying thing....... when you make Death have to work after you
I love the detail of Kitty wearing her mask at the end when she felt betrayed by Puss. She removes it, showing she is willing to trust him again. The details in this movie are such a joy to parse through.
Another detail that Doug didn't mention was the ringing of the bell. He catches the 9 glasses of cream, the last one unfinished, but the bell rings 7 times across the battle with the giant before killing him with its 8th rung.
@@justinalicea1590 Ringing of a bell, or tapping in rhytm on the wanted poster, can also be seen as a metaphor for a clock ticking, time passing, counting down to the inevitablility of death.
I cant believe you didnt mention that one line where Jack goes "What did I do to deserve this?!... I mean like, what specificallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy..." That shit got a good laugh outta me
And apparently that scene is a parody of the end of Terminator... instead of giving a thumbs up while sinking into their demise, he gives a thumbs down

19:25 I believe that Perrito knows what was happening to him, seeing how he tells Goldie later when they capture him, "From one orphan to another, you've won the orphan lottery". He just doesn't want to bring himself down with those feelings because he wants to be a therapy dog :)
I feel the same way. Personally, I often play dumb when I know something shitty is happening because if there’s nothing I can do about it, sometimes it’s best just to allow yourself to move past the bad stuff. You don’t always have to acknowledge the terrible shit you’ve been through, sometimes it’s okay to act like it wasn’t a big deal and move on. I think Perrito probably knows more than he lets on, but figured why dwell when I got a nice sweater out of the deal
My college did a screening of this film and afterwards there was a Q and A with the films director Joel Crawford, the co-director, and I believe the films head of animation. I don't remember everything they said but there were two quotes I distinctly remember. "We didn't just want to hit the sequel button" and "I've been working in animation for over 30 years... and this has been my favorite project." I thought that was awesome.
I didn’t realize why Goldie bullied Baby Bear so much until I remembered that in the original fairytale she takes Baby Bear’s bed, his chair, and his porridge, so of course they carry that energy over to this movie with Goldie relentlessly bullying Baby Bear 😂
Something I enjoy about this film (that has been mentioned before by others) is how it manages to have the three main villain archetypes without sacrificing anything for them. Goldie is your sympathetic villain who gets redeemed, Death is the scary villain who our heroes can only run from and never defeat, and Jack is the funny villain who takes pride in how evil he is. And they all get a good amount of showtime.
Its man vs self, man vs man, man vs nature and man vs the supernatural. Puss and Kitty are man vs self, they are their own antagonist, Jack is the man vs man, he's evil because he wants to be. He wants power over others. Goldie is fighting the loss of her birth family, while ignoring the family she found along the way, and Death is well Death.
One detail I do like about this movie that you didn’t bring up is that none of Puss’ death’s are heroic, in the heat of battle or noble he never dies for a good cause and either dies by stupidity, ego or extreme confidence making every death ultimately pointless which would probably add even more as to why Death is pissed with him
I honestly always see Perrito as someone who does realize how messed up his life is but he just chooses to see the bright side of things and instead of letting those past traumas weigh him down, he uses them to keep him going in his dream to be a therapy dog
Which you can honestly say is valid, as every location in his version of the map does reinforce the same core ideas of making the most of what you have in life, and trying to stop and be grateful for what you have but it also doesn't shy away from the dark side, as every location has a darker interpretation of the meaning- The Pocketful of Posies is a reminder to literally smell the roses, but it's also a reference to the nursery rhyme which has the creepy undertone of being based on the real life horror of the plague, as plague doctors would cover those who died from the plague in posies believing it would help stop the spread to other people, in essence, the location is a reminder that life is short, so you should savor it while it lasts. The river of relaxation is a direct reference to Perrito's own past where he was beaten, stuffed in a sock and thrown in the bottom of a river and left to die slowly and painfully, again, overlaying the theme of life being short and to make the most of it, as Perrito only survived by clinging to life and fighting his way out, likely being relieved to just still being alive after the ordeal. And the final location is "The Field of Quick and Easy Solutions", which I don't think we ever got to see in the movie, so we don't know what it's trials would have been, but as continuing with the dark themes, I think it's probably best that we didn't see it in the kids movie, as this would line up as an allegory for suicide, which is often what those who are severely depressed or have suicidal tendencies view as a "quick and easy solution" to suffering. Keep in mind, Perrito's path is by no means free of dangers, it's absolutely filled with them, but you can only navigate it with the right mindset, if you don't, the world will literally eat you up and spit you out, like members of Jack's crew who got killed by the posies, the underlying message in Perrito's path, is you can either go through life suffering, kicking, and screaming, or you can try and make the most of it and be grateful for what you have, no matter how little you have, there's something worth living for in the world, no matter how small it may seem.
I never even realised that Death was standing in the crowd in the intro... take notes, ladies and gentlemen. This is how you maintain a good continuity in your story.
This film just JUMPED straight into the "FUCK YEAH!" spot in my brain on a lot of things. Death was the main point but it's story, animation and characters were all I needed. Like the Critic said "Damnit, you're Puss in Boots 2! No one's expecting you to try!"
I'm guessing that those who made it must have seen the Critic's rant in this one Christmas movie. I believe it's called The Christmas Tree. In the end of the review the Critic here went into a full on rant about effort and that one should at least try. I guess the people behind Puss in Boots The Last Wish must have seen that rant and took it to heart.
You know they did a good job when you shake in fear hearing that whistle. Every time I heard it, my eyes got wide and I was looking for the wolf too. It's also a scary but cool detail that the wolf was right there at the beginning when puss lost his 8th life. Right in the crowd. Some movies/ tvs shows will be like "yeah, this character was there the whole time" but when you go back, they where lying. Not this time.

What I’m most impressed about this movie is that this movie had 3 different villains: A sympathetic villain An irredeemable but hilarious one A mysterious badass one And it nails ALL 3 of them.
Plus, the mystery one is a force of nature, not some conventional antagonist you can win against even if you can "defeat" them in a fight. After all, even if you win this time, who says you will *every* time? This is on top of the force of nature being able to test the character and their aspects, which is exactly what happens here. Puss admitting he can't win the war in this sense but still refusing to let his last life go without fighting for it is what allows him to "win" by showing his character growth, admitting this won't be the end yet not giving up since he has something worth fighting for in Kitty and Perrito. He also makes it clear he knows it isn't the last time such a meeting will happen, knowing that Death comes for all.
Even if not villains, they were antagonist; and this movie handled then all seamlessly while giving the three main characters enough ground to grow. You heard all the time in other movies like Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Spiderman 3, etc, that they had too much antagonist fighting for the spotlight but here we got an example of how it can be done right.
I know the panic attack scene has been exhausted to death online but I just wanna say as someone who suffers from these things, they fucking nailed exactly how it feels. The heart racing so fast where it feels like it'll burst, hearing your heartbeat loud in your ears, shortness of breath, being paralyzed with fear....just spot on.
@Miguel GC Gamer DreamWorks wants to try new styles with every movie they make. That's what made them so memorable for decades. So if Ruby Gillman isn't going for the same direction as The Bad Guys or Puss 2, it'll further show they're not afraid to experiment. And that's a better experience then them trying to 1-up themselves like other studios
The wolf voice need a paid raise, its one of the best voices i have ever hear, its so good in every aspect, damm whoever cast this actor for the role, deserved a raise as well. The best scene in the entire movie, was mama bear, been a mama bear and give happyness to her child even when that break her own heart... im not crying... im not crying!
Doug rightfully calling out those people, who just see animation as kid stuff that "babysit them" is just wholesome to hear. I'm glad he appreciates the hard work people put into animation. To give us fantastic stories and characters like from this movie. animation will always be as cinematic as live action movies. It deserves more respect and not to be scoffed at. Last Wish is an amazing film and definitely deserved the praise it got when it first came out.
I don't get panic attacks and I'm still with you. It reminded me of how my cat always hops on my lap to comfort me if I had a bad day. It was such a touching scene
I love the running theory that Perrito is an aspect of Death sent to aide and get people comfortable with the reality of dying. This movie was an absolute surprise treat to watch and I'm honestly glad that so much love and passion went into it. I hope more movies like this happen.

@@ZatchZXman I thought he was only like that because puss didn't respect his 8 lives. I think he only goes after characters in this fashion if they are coky like puss or just evil. If they actually respected their life, I'm guessing the wolf's appearance and mood would change drastically as to not upset the character that was dying.
I'm not one to get emotional during movies, but when Perrito helped Puss I was getting misty eyed. This movie not only clearly did research for that moment, but also didn't just rip you in and out of the scene, they took their time. When Kitty said she wanted someone, anyone she could trust I was full on crying. The characters were really relatable, and nothing felt forced at all. Everything seemed to flow beautifully, and worked so well, it's definitely a movie I'm going to have be a yearly watch.
it was Perrito's back story that did me. i'm an animal lover and i find it so depressing how people can be so cruel to them. the worst part was that he was truly oblivious to the fact they were trying to get rid of him, even willing to go as far as drowning him. Kitty's reaction matched my own
@@synaesthesia2010 it’s quite similar to what happens in real life, a lot of animals are oblivious to human cruelty and don’t understand why they are being so mistreated.
There is actually a few hints that Perrito knows full well what happened to him. When he talks with Goldie and the bears when he's captured, he specifically refers to himself as an orphan. Something he wouldn't have reason to believe if he still thought he was in a hide n' seek game with his family. Or why he never seems compelled to use the Wish to "find" his family sort of like Goldi, because he knows they wouldn't take him back. There's actually a lot of subtle hints that what characters say aren't actually what happens. Like the fact that Kitty says she never showed up at Santa Coloma either, but the movie seems to hint that she did and is lying to Puss to make him feel better after hearing how regretful he is, realizing how much he's changed. If she didn't show like she said, then why was she angry Puss didn't show and how did she know Puss didn't show?
Kitty doesn't strike me as the type to lie for the sake of others. Like she told Perrito at the river she likes to play things close to the vest like how she suggested sharing the wish with Puss without revealing that she might have already gotten what she wanted. The only times she's ever been open was when someone managed to break down her walls like how she was willing to talk about getting declawed in the first film or when she overheard Puss expressing his regrets about Santa-Coloma. My supposition is that she was trying to close herself off from Puss because she wants to quash any hopes he has of winning her back because they are technically competing to get to the Star first, which can only grant one wish and Puss has a reputation of being a lady killer. Kitty has also expressed how she's never had anyone she could really trust a couple of times and declawed cats can become more aggressive than most.
The artbook mentions twice that she didn't show up at their wedding, which makes me believe that that's what happened and the reason why she was constantly reminding him of that occasion was that she understands him well enough to know even he would be avoiding the ceremony.
Oh she definitely was telling the truth and didn't show up. I wrote a few essays on the matter so I'll keep this short with 2 main points. 1.) If she had showed up there would have been NO WAY to save the relationship. That would have been too heart breaking. 2.) Her arc is about learning to trust agai . Her wish is about trusting. If she lied to Puss there and did show up but didn't want to hurt his feelings, it would mean she couldn't trust him with HER feelings. Her heart. To tell the truth to someone is to trust them, lies are made for selfpreservation and from fear.

@@ChasehaWing I'm totally down to read your essays XD Also, yes, the whole arc Puss and Kitty go through in building up their relationship in this movie is sostantially learning how to create a bond that is more sincere and more stable, which is also why the tree scene is so important: they are now communicating honestly and openly after speaking half thruths for a long time, and have a better understanding of each other and their point of view on that whole ordeal.
One thing I found myself really liking about Jack Horner is that while the entire movie makes him out to be this cruel scumbag, it actually introduces him complementing the pie chefs that work for him. Not for the sake of it either. Jack genuinely thought the pies they made were delicious. That’s a really cool decision on the writer’s part.

In my opinion, Perrito is potentially the best written character in the entire story, and acts as a direct parallel to every single character in one way or another, by either being a mirror to make them self-reflect, or from a thematic perspective for the audience, and it's fucking genius- Jack and Perrito are complete opposites, with Perrito being an innocent, optimistic, altruistic, homeless dog who had possibly one of the absolute worst lives imaginable, and has decided to make the most of it to have a positive impact on the world. While Jack is literally a spoiled rich boy who wants to become god and tortures and kills people for fun. But I think the most genius connection is between Perrito, and Death, and how they would have a dynamic that would be the direct opposite of Puss and Death, as we know that Death despises everything about how Puss arrogantly throws his lives away for petty things while acting like he's immortal, where as Perrito is practically Death's living thesis statement, to the point that I think you could argue that the same way Death bent the rules to chase after Puss, I think you could say he potentially bent the rules and spared Perrito in the past without him even knowing it- But also these creators are on crack with insane attention to detail, so you wanna know what's a fascinating detail?- The only two canine characters in the entire movie- Are Death, who takes the form of a wolf, and Perrito- And while Death may be the literal personification with no fancy meanings- I think there's enough evidence to say that Death's ENTIRE spiel about how he's not "metaphorically, or rhetorically, or theoretically, or poetically" Death, but literally so- ALSO HIGHLIGHTS THE DETAIL that Perrito is ALL THOSE THINGS, but as the "personification" of Life for the movie, literally making him the voice for why life is worth living, and adding a matching, but mirrored voice to Death in pretty much every single way- And maybe you think I'm stretching, BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE INSANE- They literally put so much unneeded extra attention to detail in EVERY SINGLE DETAIL, I think it would be a stretch for it to NOT be intentional at this point- It is SO good, that by default, on further analysis, I think this movie is a true modern timeless masterpiece- And while this Death may not be my favorite depiction of Death (that still goes to Discworld). Perrito is quite possibly, one of my favorite characters of all time, because no amount of fumbling, can possibly fuck up how perfectly tied up his character is in this movie- Even if Shrek 5 or whatever happens next decided to destroy that and do something like say "Actually Perrito was tricking everyone all along and was evil actually", it wouldn't even put a scratch in how flawlessly flawed this character is in this movie- The themes are positively gourmet, and I'm a sucker for that shit. Edit: This is 3 months after originally posting this, and I wanna say thank you to everyone for the likes and great discussion in the replies, I wouldn't normally edit a comment after this long, but user @YukoValis pointed out a great detail that I couldn't leave out in good conscience. "The map location "The Field of Quick and Easy Solutions" is very much referring to suicide. I love how even months later, I can still learn new little details like this from other people, and I think that's a testament to how much of a detailed and thought out masterpiece this movie really is. Perrito being a personification of life is something that I thought too when I watched the movie. It makes a lot of sense and... Also you can make the pun about life being short.
Let's also add that the villains make great opposites of the heroes.: As you noted, Perrito and Jack are opposites in one being so wholesome, accepting and kind and the other being ruthless, evil and uncaring. For the others, Puss is opposite of Lobo because of life and death. For Kitty and Goldie, they both feel alone in different ways. Goldie trusts her family, but she wants something to feel like she belongs, while Kitty trusts no one, and feels alone, wanting anyone to trust, essentially both wanting family for different reasons.
@@lootcat1230 That point about Kitty and Goldie is great, I'll have to remember that one. But also, I feel like it's unfair to call two of the antagonists "villains", as Goldie, while she and the bears are a crime family, isn't really evil, just misguided and that's what makes them such good antagonists, because they contrast and clash with the other characters while not exactly being evil. The same with Death, whose motivation is entirely separate from everyone else going after the wish (which is, again another thing he has in common with Perrito, as they're the only ones in the main cast that don't care about the wish itself, but rather, they're both motivated by Puss), his goal is to humble Puss and shatter his ego that has made him throw so many lives away over basically nothing. The only true evil villain in the movie is Jack, and he's the perfect foil to every other character in the movie combined, in both how he's different from them, but also similar, like Goldie, he's a crime boss, but unlike her, he doesn't care about "family" and is a spoiled rich kid, who never went through any of the hardships of life. With Death, they both serve the roles of forces of nature almost, with Death being literal, while Jack is just pure evil and cruelty chasing after an endless desire for unlimited power. And the parallel is strongest with Boots, who wasted away his lives seeking glory and never truly appreciating anything, while Jack has a much more direct version of this, as he literally throws away a dozen lives in the pursuit of his wish, because holds absolutely nothing as being more important than his pursuit of power. And that's why it's so fitting in the end, he's the one who runs out of lives and actually falls to his literal Death. With the reaper established as an actual entity, it makes me wish that we had some hint or after credits that whenever Jack fell, the last thing he heard was that whistle that followed Boots all movie long.
I love that when you watch the "deleted scenes" or "cut songs" of most movies you think 'oh in another world the story we could have had-' but with the last wish, this IS the best version of the story
I’m glad this film was released now because now more than ever we need a movie like this that can show what makes animated movies so special and this one did it
The Last Wish is one of my favorite animated adventure movies. Funny enough, Shrek 2 is one of my favorites for both comedies and animated family movies. The Shrek franchise deserves all the praise it got in the early 2000s, and I'd like to see a Shrek 5 done with all the care and consideration of this movie (and Shrek 2 of course). They may be "family-friendly" or "for kids" yet I still fully enjoy watching them as an adult in my mid-20s; I can't say the same about any of Disney's new animated films.
20:41 I found myself tearing up the first time I saw this scene. All I could think of where the moments where my own dogs laid next to me when I was having a bad day and it made it just a bit better.
I think every dog over ever will recognize that scene, where your bud just comes to lie beside you and offers you nothing but pure companionship. I've seen the movie several times now, yet I tear up every time at that scene cause it reminds me of my own dogs as well
Before I got a dog in 2017, my cat would be the one to recognize I was having an episode and come to comfort me. Even after we got the dog, my cat would come first, and my dog learned from him to come in my crisis moments. Five years after my cat passed, my dog has been there for me. I saw the scene before I saw the movie and damn near cried because of how well it was done. I ended up watching the movie with like 18 other furries (yes I'm a degen myself) and it turned into a comedic moment when the host paused the movie when Puss put his paw on Perrito's head by mistake.
The pairing of Ethical Bug and Big Jack Horner was just so perfect. Couldn’t help but bust a gut at Bug’s reactions to everything, all the while trying in vain to tease some goodness out of Jack, only to finally snap and give up with a solid “YOU’RE AN IRREDEEMABLE MONSTER!”
This movie literally juggled and delivered the main 3 villain trope The force of nature (Death) The sympathetic villains (Goldie and the 3 Bears) The classic/pure evil villain (Jack Horner)

What I like is how instead of furrowing his eyebrows or spending the whole movie looking angry in an attempt to make him look “scary,” Death keeps opening his eyes wide open. It adds a whole new creepy factor to his grin, these straight up just red circles with tiny dots in the middle. Plus it can also be interpreted as eye-holes in a skull.
That's a great observation! You could possibly even see it the other way, by the end. At the end of their fight, Puss is the one with his eyes open and clear, and Death is narrowing his eyes in one last attempt to intimidate him.
Honestly this film is one of the few I’d consider a masterpiece. Even at its weakest points you get a lot out of it, it’s shocking how well done this was.
@breadandcircuses8127 honestly between outstanding animation, writing, acting, and setting (music, backgrounds, etc.) it’s already there, but then you look at the tropes it uses that are normally considered over used or just used poorly, they were able to make it work (e.g. modern comedy relief [Perrito]). On top of that, they manage three diverse groups of antagonists that have varying motivations and degrees of complexity that add to the journey of the story (relatable/redeemable antagonist, unredeemable antagonist, and pure antagonist [I don’t know how to describe Death as an antagonist more than the purest form of antagonist]). Throw in the fact that it balances lighthearted and deep and complex storylines so well while address an audience of any real age…I just don’t feel like I’ve seen that in so many years, I struggle to even think of another movie that does all of this so well.

Nobody touches on it, but I really enjoy the (at 22:40) scene of them dancing into the air, which is a callback to what they do during their first meeting in the first movie where they fight, and do the same move. I think its a nice touch XD
I compared it to velma when this movie came out because of how it portrays with dealing with anxiety/panic attacks. in Puss in boots: the last wish, it shows Purrito being a calming presence with the person and helping the sufferer slowing regain their surroundings, whereas in Velma, how Daphne helps the sufferer deal with a panic attack is to physically assault them and then sexually assault them
Yeah, they're being compared not because the stories are similar, it's just a really good example of how kids' media frequently has more genuine, actual respect for its mature themes than stuff (supposedly) aimed at adults. Velma f'ed that up on every level, despite having sex jokes and gore aplenty it's relentlessly immature. Whereas Last Wish has two drops of blood seen in the whole movie, and felt like the more grown-up story.

I compared them for a few reasons; -came out near the same time -spin offs to a classic franchise -took risks on redesigns/ animation -themes around death, and panic attacks -how emotions/relations are portrayed -a kids film being mature, and an adult animation acting immature - how one exemplified the best in animation vs the worse of all time. To me it was a matter of "you did so bad we'll compare you to the best to show you HOW AWFUL YOU ARE. AND THE BEST LITERALLY JUST CAME OUT."

Puss in Boots 2 is the Majora's Mask of film animation, with its unexpected beauty, deep messages and an overall darker setting. Truely one of its kind.
It's kind of the total opposite though. Majora's mask was rushed out the door with mostly recycled assets in a year and a half as a follow up to one of the biggest games of its time The Last Wish took a decade to release with a completely original style as a follow up to a very unremarkable movie most people forget about after viewing

What got me hooked was how death cut Puss minutes after he sang a song about never being touched by a blade. That's a great way to show what a threat he is and why Puss would be scared of him.
This movie manages to have its cake and eat it too, with the Three Bears family being sympathetic and Death just being a force of nature. Great villain characters all the way round :)

@@MovieFan1912 Giving them equal screentime certainly helps, but Death did not have the same end goal as the other two. His objective was to torment Puss and then take his final life.
When I went to first see Last Wish with some of my college friends, one of them said that it was his 5th time seeing the movie in theaters. They were so excited to see it that they would have left me behind had I not called them, and after seeing the movie, I can totally understand why they would because I was mesmerized by the artistry and heart put into it.
I noticed that the map reflects their wishes. Puss, who wants to live longer, has dangerous potentially deadly things, and self reflection. Kitty, who wants to trust someone, has misery and loneliness. Goldi, who wants a family, has to view the Nostalgia of what she already has. Perrito, who just wants to help his friends, has easy solutions and a nice walk! It's SOOO clever and gives you an early insight to Kitty's wish if you connect the dots.
It feels like a defense mechanism of the forest. Trying to assuage people to not wish for anything by telling them they have they want or to deter them with their greatest fears.
I’m gonna be brutally honest when I say this, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is my favourite movie of all time I’ve seen many phenomenal movies from many years across many different mediums but something about this movie stuck with me personally. It’s themes were exactly what I needed at the time I watched it, I had a weird nostalgic connection to it because of my childhood love of the character and its style has inspired me creatively in so many ways. So much so that it has inspired me to learn to animate Also, I think Doug’s point at the very end that this is ultimately a simple, well made movie is fascinating. It’s not trying to be overly clever, it’s not trying to subvert your expectations every few seconds (except for surprising you by the fact that it’s actually good movie) and it’s not trying to be anything it isn’t. It sticks by what it sets out to do and does it really really well
I think the reason why it felt nostalgic is because it treated you like an adult. Not once did it shy away from the ugly of the world. It wasn't contrived or forced. It let you come to your own conclusions and didn't scream what its message was. Recently I watched some old classics like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the Wizard of Oz. Although they outright said the message and morals at the end, it didn't shy away from showing you the ugly while getting there. The greed of people, the vileness some people are, or how some people are willing to disregard advice even when shown what happens to those who don't listen or throw caution to the wind. But it also shows that there are in fact genuinely good people willing to give a hand and care for one another. This movie has all that and a lot of what modern movies are missing. The Good The Bad and The Ugly.

It's just a fantastic movie. The characters. The animation. The story, while simple and not entirely new, is told so well to near-perfection. Also! Wanted to point something out since you pointed out those small details they had in the movie. Remember when they said the wish operates on "birthday wish rules?" If you tell somebody your wish, it doesn't come true. Everybody that had a wish told someone what their wish was. In the end, nobody got to make their wish. Is that not cool as all hell? Seriously, they did such an INCREDIBLE job on this movie from top-to-bottom.
Well, I think that in the end, all who touched the map got their wish, altough without the star and not in the way they envisioned. Jack (who helds the map briefly during the fights) wants to have all the magic in the world. He ends up drowning in the most potent magic there is, but without the ability to control it Perrito altough he said he didn´t WANT a wish, he still admitted that he would like a name of his own and family, and he got both with Puss and Kitty Puss wanted new lives, and he ended up starting a new life with Kitty and Perrito Kitty wanted somebody she could fully trust, and she found that in Puss and Perrito Goldi wanted a real family, she found one, not the one she imagined, but one that is "just right" for her
I love how every fiber of your being is SCREAMING at you to expect Puss to laugh in Death's face once he's triumphed over him in the climax, yet he just stands there...stoic...staring Death in the face with all the severity of a man...err, cat...who's gone through hell and back: he ain't afraid any more...he's accepted Death as his shadow, that it will one day swallow him whole...just not today. Also, major props to this movie playing the "Maybe the REAL adventure was the friends we made along the way" card and ACTUALLY meaning it. But yeah, this is easily one of my all-time favorite films, and I genuinely feel like this will go down as an all-time classic; one viewing, much like with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was all it took. I'm not afraid to say I started blubbering like a baby in a few scenes of the movie; it is BEAUTIFUL! Say it with me, now: "Who is your favorite fearless hero? @@lShadow426l Oh shoot, I never noticed that little detail. Really plays up the fact he's straight-up boasting and isn't valuing life when death's shadow bears down on him. Though, to be fair, I didn't notice Death standing in the crowd at first, so...whew...this film is REALLY good at sweating the small stuff. I love when films have those "blink and you miss it" kinda details. Makes repeat watches more enjoyable and makes you really appreciate the film more and more. :O
Concerning Perrito's backstory, I always thought he did figure it out in the past, or that he was depressed before, but at some point managed to look waaaaaay past it. And that's what made him wanna be a therapy dog.

I like to read the scene where perrito is explaining his tragic backstory, and laughing at it, I think he may have actually understood what was going on, but he's just the kind of person that accepted it as it was and chose to preserver towards a happy life even so, because that's just who perrito is. And when you accept tragic things in your past, you laugh at them, for some people it's a necessary step in not letting your trauma define who you are. It seems to me like he processed it and left it in the past where it belongs.
10:38 I mean... at this point in the movie, Death could just as easily have been a bounty hunter that preferred to bring his bounties in dead, if given the choice. That's why Puss declared Death to be a bounty hunter when Death first pulled out the wanted poster. There are clues to his true identity throughout the scene, but considering that this is a world of fairy tales and nursery rhymes, one could assume that Death was one as well prior to the reveal.

If there’s one thing that DreamWorks is good at, it’s surprising us with movies that we all think would be bad. It happened in the past with the first Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon, and now, we can add Puss in Boots: The Last Wish to the list.

Fun Fact: In the Home Release of the film a separate small 4 minute video known as The Trident (2023) which was released which this short explains how one of Puss' previous lives was lost. While most of the film cast whose character appears in the short reprises their role (Perrito, Goldilocks, Papa and Baby Bear) aside from Mama Bear who remained silent during the short, the only exceptions are Antonio Banderas who is replaced by Eric Bauza (who previously replaced him for the The Adventures of Puss in Boots (2015) TV Series) and Salma Hayek who is replaced by Margo Rey.
@@craigrobbins2463 the first one was fine. not bad, but not super memorable. I think it'll actually make you appreciate the last wish even more, with the knowledge of how big of an improvement it was.
@@craigrobbins2463 meh I watched the first one after seeing the second and it was perfectly fine, it actually made me enjoy the last wish even more on rewatch since they have lots of little easter eggs referencing the first.
I do want to point out another aspect of the first action scene in the governor's house and the giant. I believe that scene is important to the movie for, not only the reasons you mentioned, of which I actually do not even remembering considering, but also because it establishes Puss as a good fighter. That is ESSENTIAL if you want death to seem like even more of a formidable threat. Because if you do not know that Puss is a good fighter, Then when he struggles against fighting death, people could just make the assumption that he is simply a not a good fighter, rather then death being a strong antagonist. Sure, you could argue removing the scene could do both. But it emphasizes the true power of death, as it, or rather, he, was the only thing that could actually put Puss in his place.

I've watched this movie almost a half dozen times and I just can't get over it. It's been more than a decade since a movie came out, that I willingly watched over and over. Easily the best movie of the 2020s so far, and the new of my top 5 of all time. Simply put, this movie is perfect.
I know that the romance between Puss and Kitty doesn't get talked about a lot when it comes to discussions about the movie, if anything because it's sooo full of amazing things to gush about it gets drowned by everything else, but there are three things I wanna give to them that I think really sell their story to me: 1) their scenes together are absolutely gorgeous to look at, especially the tree one. The pink aestethic and the amount of detail (the heart-shaped lens flare is just chef's kiss, for me) always leaves me in awe, it's a scene I always look forward to. Also, the stars in their eyes when they look at each other are just the cutest thing; 2) "One life spent with you is all that I could wish for" is absolutely one of the best romantic lines spoken in animation history and I will DIE on this hill; 3) Most important of all: their relationship is an integral part of their growth as characters. By the end, they both have to learn to let people into their lives because that is what gives life meaning: loving people and letting yourself be loved. Their unability to let other people in stems from their main character flaws. Puss very clearly has issues forming significant bonds and maintaining them and his persona is bigger than himself and wouldn't let anything perceived as not fitting that image get in. Kitty, who's been reliant on herself alone for her whole life, has to learn to trust others and lean on them. I think their relationship works very well because it perfectly ties in with the main message of the movie, which is a memento that life in one, death is inevitable, and because of that we should all cherish the bonds we have with the people that love us, which requires, though, for you to be vulnerable and to trust the other. I'm also glad that they make it very clear that calling off the wedding was actually a good thing (the means by which that was achieved might have been better handled, sure 😅) because they weren't a good fit at the time, but that they might be now that they've both grown and matured. There are also some other things not entirely linked to them specifically that make me appreciate their relationship even more (I could gush about the gatito blade for a LOOONG time) but yeah, my main point is: as much as their romance is not as integral or as present in the movie as it is in others, I still feel it plays a pivotal part in it and what they did with it it's absolutely beautiful
Dreamworks has an amazing track record for good romances in their animated movies. They're not about romance but about chemistry, connections, and making a relationship work. In the first Puss movie, you can see Jack and Jill having a conversation about children. One of the wants to have kids and the other doesn't. They disagree, but they don't yell at each other or toss verbal abuse. They work through it, like a functional relationship. Although not a great movie, it's nice to see a relationship that doesn't devolve to bickering and constant fighting that make you ask, "WHY ARE YOU EVEN MARRIED?? YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T LOVE EACH OTHER!!"
@@ZatchZXman truly, they make some of the best couples. The more I think about them the more I realize how many great ones there are. They might not have as many memorable moments as some of Disney's most iconic ones but I feel they have something better: a deep connection and understanding of each other, as you noted. I love that in this one they also tried to showcase a couple that is working towards that goal.

That said, the casual way it is taken by both parts imply it is part of their own marital dinamics, and its cute they get to compromise by "try with the pigs first". P.D.: Adding a mandatory Stoick reference because there is no way in hell talking about romance in dreamworks doesnt include him, even if he pretty much had like 20 minutes tops split between three movies.
I love how Goldie’s story arc is hinted at right at the beginning, when she and the bears are introduced the only words left visible on their wanted poster are “want family”.
One of the funniest out of left field funny lines is during the crystal palace scene when death walks in he says, "...the smell of fear is, INTOXICATING." and the drunk death Puss says, "What is?!"
This movie is such an inspiration. It goes so much harder, and has so much effort, heart, and detail than it has any right to be. Thanks for pointing out the added detail and Easter eggs.
Honestly, I felt like the skipped frames idea was done far better in this film than in Spiderverse. Spiderverse would add frame skips all over the place, including during comparatively mundane moments like the two spideys learning to swing, which caused me to feel like the visuals were just stuttering. Meanwhile, Puss puts them more specifically during moments of intense excitement and action when things are already being stylized to show rapid speed, causing the stutters to give more of an impression similar to looney tunes when characters snap into different poses or actions in response to other snappy actions. I might be explaining this terribly because it's really hard for me to understand the strange feeling I have about the two examples, but I think I'm getting the point across?
Spiderverse pushes the envelope too much, and overuses it to the point of it just losing the impact it could've had, meanwhile Puss in Boots used it surgically to help make the exciting moments more impactful?
During Puss's second fight with La Muerte Lobo he yelled at Puss: "POR QUÉ DIABLOS FUI A JUGAR CON MI COMIDA" which translates to "WHY THE HELL DID I HAVE TO PLAY WITH MY FOOD!?" I had to look this up because I do not speak Spanish. Now I repeat this line so many times because it's so funny.
I honestly thought he said "Why must the Devil play games with me?" I probably could've figured it out but he said so quickly I couldn't hear him properly.

Perrito was definitely the character I was impressed the most with. A lesser film would have made him extremely annoying and the clear sole comic relief for kids. Instead, they made him relatable, sweet, justifiably innocent and most importantly believable, while still being a funny character. I think I groaned when he showed up because I assumed what was coming, but it never did. The scene where he calms Puss from a panic attack got me legit emotional because it felt so real.
10:27 Too be fair on the twist, bounty hunters comes in all shapes and sizes. It's not uncommon for those who want to have a grim reaper-like appearance to add an extra layer of fear when they're hunting their target. And secondly, when was there ever any indication that Death could take a physical form in any of the Shrek and/or Puss in Boots films that predated this one? Unless it's confirmed that Death is a Shapeshifter and was secretly hiding in various areas where a major character dies, (like maybe he was appearing as one of the guests during Lord Farquaad's wedding, or attending the party during the Fairy Godmother's demise, just to name a couple of examples,) Death, (as in the physical embodiment himself and not the actual force of nature,) was never seen before this movie.
He’s probably waiting for the dead anyways, just had a thing against puss bc of what puss had done before the events of this film (timeline wise at least).
I wish Critic had talked a lot more about Death. He had very limited screen time and yet he’s one of the decades best antagonists to come out in that time. There’s a-lot to talk about with him.
A sad moment that is unnoticed: A small and subtle one with the brief cameo of Pinocchio - the man next to him is Geppetto, meaning this version of Pinocchio didn't have an pair of evil con-men, neither an evil puppeteer or a coachman who abused his magical nature. *It was his own father,* ignoring his son to count his money. By the time Shrek rolled around, said father willfully abandons his son under the new rules.
One little thing I noticed that’s really interesting is how different Puss acts after his encounter with Death at the bar. You’ll notice that he’s a lot more anxious and scared about things such as Jack Horner’s ruthlessness, running away from the bears at the cat home, and his worry about entering the dark forest. His mortality is constantly on his mind. Plus, the times that death reappears coincide with Puss reverting to or thinking about his past self with his legacy.
I thought it was mostly because how Velma treated animation as a thing for kids and adults who watch animated things are idiots. But Puss in Boots proved them wrong.
@@hishamrashid5293 Velma was an R rated show though. If anything, I'd argue the difference was that PIB was confident in its belief that adults and children could both find a mature, emotional story, while Velma was so concerned with sounding adult and edgy that it alienated both kids and adults. Kids because it was too R rated, adults because it was trying so hard to be adult that it ironically came across as adolescent. Like one of those edgy 2000s Nu Metal bands made up of teens trying to sound badass but really just sounding whiny.
This movie really is a perfect example of a film that is so much better than it has any right being. Even if the line is overused it the movie, it really did do nearly everything "just right". Perrito, could have been such an annoying character. But he balances out the group so well. They also knew to avoid one of the biggest mistakes with characters like him, he never ruins a moment with some cheap joke or bit. Like Puss' panic attack, they could have ruined it with Perrito doing some dumb joke or gag. But even with the comic relief character, they play it straight & respectfully. Which is why it's such a powerful moment. I love how they avoided that cliche group break up with Goldilocks (whose design & attitude I LOVE btw) when she said she wanted to wish for her real family. Yet the Bears still supported her. Jack Horner was also refreshing just to have an irredeemably evil person that just relishes in what a monster he is. Having Jiminy Cricket as his "conscience" get more & more fed up with him & lose his optimism of there being "good in all people" was hilarious. And of course making Wolf Death was just a perfect choice. I love how they were able to make a whistle so haunting. It's also great how you can't straight up call him a villian. He's a great example of an "antagonist" without being a villian (like Jack). Definitely a hidden gem of a movie.
This was the last movie my boyfriend and I watched before I had to move to help care for my weakening brother who had to be revived 5 times the year before and probably his last year. This movie has hit super hard but we still love it.

Fantastic film. Saw it twice, first during the sneak peek then on actual release. So glad it got the shine it did.
The reason Puss in Boots was compared to Velma was because both feature panic attacks and someone being comforted during one. One handled the experience with maturity and was heartwarming. And the other was Velma.
Oh yeah that "Velma" comparison. Because yes totally invading someone's privacy and personal space is how you're supposed to handle anxiety.

I think the reason why Puss didn’t realize The Wolf was Death was because he’s denied his own mortality for so long, he doesn’t acknowledge Deaths true identity until it’s almost too late. Puss knows he’s a threat, but not how much of a threat he really is

it also helps for the audience. I've seen many people, myself included, who went in blind and didn't know what the wolf was. Puss calling him a bounty hunter was enough for a lot of people to think he was just a really skilled bounty hunter. The creepy nature because he was a canine chasing a feline.
Eh, I think its much simplier than that. When death introduces himself, he does so with a bounty offer. Puss then thinks he is a bounty hunter, which....isnt too far fetched.
As viewers of the events, its easier for us to see death as he is from the get-go...But being in Puss's boots....its extremely plausible to just think its another bounty hunter.
I just assume d it was a metaphore when I got Grimm reaper vibes off him, I wasn't expecting a PG film to go that far.
@@terranceaskew3165 In my mind I just thought of him as "the Bounty Hunter." As an audience member I think they did a good job of misleading us into believing him to be some form of Boba Fett. A bar scene, a wanted poster, not to mention that you expect the Grimm Reaper to be a skeleton, not a wolf. Sure he's in black and uses scythes as a weapon but that could just be a metaphor, you know?
Jack Horner really is an example of how to make a completely irredeemable villain in an enjoyable way. He knows he's horrible and takes pride in being the worst!
He was like the DreamWorks equivalent of The Kingpin.

What makes him even better is that he is actually dangerous. Many funny villains are just this- funny and nothing else. Jack is both funny and threatening.

Death is one of if not the best DreamWorks antagonist ever. His whistle still sends shivers up my spine. I like how, at the start, Puss was bragging about having "never been touched by a blade." So the moment Death was actually able to cut him, Puss became a scared, anxious mess. It's the moment he realized that he's not invincible after all.

They fundamentally got trauma and it's aftermath right. You think you're safe something forces you to realize you're not and you've got to learn to live in the new reality or the fear destroys you. The majority of movies made for entirely adult audiences that try it don't handle it half as well. Masterful work on every level.
The fact that he's still wearing the sock he was meant to drown in is such a morbid cherry on top of a detail I love it

One of Death's most badass lines IMO is "Everyone thinks they'll be the one to defeat me. But no one's escaped me yet." Such chilling foreshadowing for his true identity revealed later on in the film.
All of his lines were badass. Let's just get that fact out of the way.

"Damnit, you're Puss in Boots 2! No one's expecting you to try!" Which I feel is the most common point brought up. A movie that didn't need to try as hard as it did and the love comes across so wonderfully.
I wanna get into contact with the team and personally thank and congratulate them for going out of their way to make a movie that initially would've had little to no expectations raise the friggin bar and blow away people. I'm honest to god so proud in the work everyone put into this movie, its instantly become one of my top 10 favorite animated movies of all time

I think I read somewhere that the animators behind The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish were competing to see who could have the better animation. They pushed each other without any executive neckbreathing which helped make both movies turn out terrific.

Saw this about a week before Mario came out. Damn I had such high hopes for Mario and such little expectation for Puss n Boots...best I can describe it is two similar dishes served at a restaurant and PnB is the one with a splash of hot sauce that pushes it into greatness.
One line that made me laugh and caught me off guard was what Death says after giving up on taking Puss’s last life. It translates to “Why the hell did I play with my food?!” Something about seeing a character who was so domineering and in control throughout the movie basically rage quit and scold himself was very funny to me.

Same here, friends! I'm 43, still enjoying comics, videogames, and animation. It doesn't mean I'm childish or naive. (I also am a house owner, and like traveling and hiking, before someone throws in a 'living in mom's basement' stereotype). I get it from my dad. He's 91 now, but he NEVER became bitter or a know it all. I actually have some people sometimes telling me to 'act like a 40+', but I always ask, what the hell is that? Another detail I noticed: when Puss is at the cat house, Death doesn't even bother to harrass him, and if the beard is any indication, he stayed there for a while. Maybe Death thought that was a good punishment, or that Puss at least started to learn to value his life more.
Death only starts haunting Puss again when he gets the map to get his wish to regain his lives, disrespecting death yet again.
It's that puss wasn't doing anything death defying. No danger no risk.
He wasn't valuing his life, he was just bowing down to fear.
My theory is that Death only appears in moments when he would have potentially died (the fight with the monster, the chase scene, the fight over the map, the wishing scene etc) and the only time outside of that was Death introducing himself to Puss for the first time.
That's what I always thought too.
Death could have easily gone after him, but living in the Cat House seemed to be enough of a punishment. That's because he Puss clearly humiliated, unhappy and unfulfilled.

Death is not a neutral force of nature, he is actively looking to kill Puss because he is vindictive and spiteful. He already has a grudge against cats, and Puss is the worst of them all, not appreciating what he had. You could argue the opening is the perfect example of this: he doesn't die fighting the giant, he dies because he's addicted to the praise and adoration of the crowd. I'd say it's even possible Death orchestrated that one too, him watching there, and nobody can see him before the finale. Maybe Death cut the rope holding the bell in place.

I love the detail of Kitty wearing her mask at the end when she felt betrayed by Puss. She removes it, showing she is willing to trust him again. The details in this movie are such a joy to parse through.
Another detail that Doug didn't mention was the ringing of the bell. He catches the 9 glasses of cream, the last one unfinished, but the bell rings 7 times across the battle with the giant before killing him with its 8th rung.

I feel the same way. Personally, I often play dumb when I know something shitty is happening because if there’s nothing I can do about it, sometimes it’s best just to allow yourself to move past the bad stuff. You don’t always have to acknowledge the terrible shit you’ve been through, sometimes it’s okay to act like it wasn’t a big deal and move on. I think Perrito probably knows more than he lets on, but figured why dwell when I got a nice sweater out of the deal

My college did a screening of this film and afterwards there was a Q and A with the films director Joel Crawford, the co-director, and I believe the films head of animation. I don't remember everything they said but there were two quotes I distinctly remember. "We didn't just want to hit the sequel button" and "I've been working in animation for over 30 years... and this has been my favorite project." I thought that was awesome.

I didn’t realize why Goldie bullied Baby Bear so much until I remembered that in the original fairytale she takes Baby Bear’s bed, his chair, and his porridge, so of course they carry that energy over to this movie with Goldie relentlessly bullying Baby Bear 😂
Something I enjoy about this film (that has been mentioned before by others) is how it manages to have the three main villain archetypes without sacrificing anything for them. Goldie is your sympathetic villain who gets redeemed, Death is the scary villain who our heroes can only run from and never defeat, and Jack is the funny villain who takes pride in how evil he is. And they all get a good amount of showtime.
Kinda reminds of Bullet Train.
Funny is the brothers. Scary is the Russian girl. Redeemable villain in the main protagonist or Bad Bunny character.

Its man vs self, man vs man, man vs nature and man vs the supernatural. Puss and Kitty are man vs self, they are their own antagonist, Jack is the man vs man, he's evil because he wants to be. He wants power over others. Goldie is fighting the loss of her birth family, while ignoring the family she found along the way, and Death is well Death.
That's because filmmakers often forget that there's a difference between a villain and an antagonist.
More like, the villain who turns *good*, the villain who stays *neutral*, and the villain who is plain *evil*.
One detail I do like about this movie that you didn’t bring up is that none of Puss’ death’s are heroic, in the heat of battle or noble he never dies for a good cause and either dies by stupidity, ego or extreme confidence making every death ultimately pointless which would probably add even more as to why Death is pissed with him
Dreamworks may not have a perfect track record but when they have a hit, they have a HIT.
I’ll take 20 Shrek the Thirds or Shark Tales if it means we get a Prince of Egypt, HTTYD, and The Last Wish every now and again

I honestly always see Perrito as someone who does realize how messed up his life is but he just chooses to see the bright side of things and instead of letting those past traumas weigh him down, he uses them to keep him going in his dream to be a therapy dog
Which you can honestly say is valid, as every location in his version of the map does reinforce the same core ideas of making the most of what you have in life, and trying to stop and be grateful for what you have but it also doesn't shy away from the dark side, as every location has a darker interpretation of the meaning-
The Pocketful of Posies is a reminder to literally smell the roses, but it's also a reference to the nursery rhyme which has the creepy undertone of being based on the real life horror of the plague, as plague doctors would cover those who died from the plague in posies believing it would help stop the spread to other people, in essence, the location is a reminder that life is short, so you should savor it while it lasts.
The river of relaxation is a direct reference to Perrito's own past where he was beaten, stuffed in a sock and thrown in the bottom of a river and left to die slowly and painfully, again, overlaying the theme of life being short and to make the most of it, as Perrito only survived by clinging to life and fighting his way out, likely being relieved to just still being alive after the ordeal.
And the final location is "The Field of Quick and Easy Solutions", which I don't think we ever got to see in the movie, so we don't know what it's trials would have been, but as continuing with the dark themes, I think it's probably best that we didn't see it in the kids movie, as this would line up as an allegory for suicide, which is often what those who are severely depressed or have suicidal tendencies view as a "quick and easy solution" to suffering.
Keep in mind, Perrito's path is by no means free of dangers, it's absolutely filled with them, but you can only navigate it with the right mindset, if you don't, the world will literally eat you up and spit you out, like members of Jack's crew who got killed by the posies, the underlying message in Perrito's path, is you can either go through life suffering, kicking, and screaming, or you can try and make the most of it and be grateful for what you have, no matter how little you have, there's something worth living for in the world, no matter how small it may seem.

I never even realised that Death was standing in the crowd in the intro... take notes, ladies and gentlemen. This is how you maintain a good continuity in your story.
This film just JUMPED straight into the "FUCK YEAH!" spot in my brain on a lot of things. Death was the main point but it's story, animation and characters were all I needed. Like the Critic said "Damnit, you're Puss in Boots 2! No one's expecting you to try!"
I'm guessing that those who made it must have seen the Critic's rant in this one Christmas movie. I believe it's called The Christmas Tree. In the end of the review the Critic here went into a full on rant about effort and that one should at least try. I guess the people behind Puss in Boots The Last Wish must have seen that rant and took it to heart.
If I'm being honest, hearing Death's whistle in the beginning skit actually gave me goosebumps.
You know what someone should do? Make those 10 hour videos but make it silence and a black screen. At random moments, have the death whistle appear

You know they did a good job when you shake in fear hearing that whistle. Every time I heard it, my eyes got wide and I was looking for the wolf too. It's also a scary but cool detail that the wolf was right there at the beginning when puss lost his 8th life. Right in the crowd. Some movies/ tvs shows will be like "yeah, this character was there the whole time" but when you go back, they where lying. Not this time.

What I’m most impressed about this movie is that this movie had 3 different villains:
A sympathetic villain
An irredeemable but hilarious one
A mysterious badass one
And it nails ALL 3 of them.
Plus, the mystery one is a force of nature, not some conventional antagonist you can win against even if you can "defeat" them in a fight. After all, even if you win this time, who says you will *every* time? This is on top of the force of nature being able to test the character and their aspects, which is exactly what happens here.
Puss admitting he can't win the war in this sense but still refusing to let his last life go without fighting for it is what allows him to "win" by showing his character growth, admitting this won't be the end yet not giving up since he has something worth fighting for in Kitty and Perrito. He also makes it clear he knows it isn't the last time such a meeting will happen, knowing that Death comes for all.

Even if not villains, they were antagonist; and this movie handled then all seamlessly while giving the three main characters enough ground to grow. You heard all the time in other movies like Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Spiderman 3, etc, that they had too much antagonist fighting for the spotlight but here we got an example of how it can be done right.

I know the panic attack scene has been exhausted to death online but I just wanna say as someone who suffers from these things, they fucking nailed exactly how it feels. The heart racing so fast where it feels like it'll burst, hearing your heartbeat loud in your ears, shortness of breath, being paralyzed with fear....just spot on.
Between this and The Bad Guys it was nice to see DreamWorks have such a great last year.

@Miguel GC Gamer DreamWorks wants to try new styles with every movie they make. That's what made them so memorable for decades. So if Ruby Gillman isn't going for the same direction as The Bad Guys or Puss 2, it'll further show they're not afraid to experiment. And that's a better experience then them trying to 1-up themselves like other studios
The wolf voice need a paid raise, its one of the best voices i have ever hear, its so good in every aspect, damm whoever cast this actor for the role, deserved a raise as well.
The best scene in the entire movie, was mama bear, been a mama bear and give happyness to her child even when that break her own heart... im not crying... im not crying!
Doug rightfully calling out those people, who just see animation as kid stuff that "babysit them" is just wholesome to hear. I'm glad he appreciates the hard work people put into animation. To give us fantastic stories and characters like from this movie. animation will always be as cinematic as live action movies. It deserves more respect and not to be scoffed at. Last Wish is an amazing film and definitely deserved the praise it got when it first came out.
As someone who suffers from panic attacks, the scene where Puss has an attack, was so realistic and natural, I teared up in theaters

I love the running theory that Perrito is an aspect of Death sent to aide and get people comfortable with the reality of dying. This movie was an absolute surprise treat to watch and I'm honestly glad that so much love and passion went into it. I hope more movies like this happen.

If they actually respected their life, I'm guessing the wolf's appearance and mood would change drastically as to not upset the character that was dying.
I'm not one to get emotional during movies, but when Perrito helped Puss I was getting misty eyed. This movie not only clearly did research for that moment, but also didn't just rip you in and out of the scene, they took their time. When Kitty said she wanted someone, anyone she could trust I was full on crying. The characters were really relatable, and nothing felt forced at all. Everything seemed to flow beautifully, and worked so well, it's definitely a movie I'm going to have be a yearly watch.
it was Perrito's back story that did me. i'm an animal lover and i find it so depressing how people can be so cruel to them. the worst part was that he was truly oblivious to the fact they were trying to get rid of him, even willing to go as far as drowning him. Kitty's reaction matched my own
@@synaesthesia2010 it’s quite similar to what happens in real life, a lot of animals are oblivious to human cruelty and don’t understand why they are being so mistreated.
There is actually a few hints that Perrito knows full well what happened to him. When he talks with Goldie and the bears when he's captured, he specifically refers to himself as an orphan. Something he wouldn't have reason to believe if he still thought he was in a hide n' seek game with his family. Or why he never seems compelled to use the Wish to "find" his family sort of like Goldi, because he knows they wouldn't take him back.
There's actually a lot of subtle hints that what characters say aren't actually what happens. Like the fact that Kitty says she never showed up at Santa Coloma either, but the movie seems to hint that she did and is lying to Puss to make him feel better after hearing how regretful he is, realizing how much he's changed. If she didn't show like she said, then why was she angry Puss didn't show and how did she know Puss didn't show?
Kitty doesn't strike me as the type to lie for the sake of others. Like she told Perrito at the river she likes to play things close to the vest like how she suggested sharing the wish with Puss without revealing that she might have already gotten what she wanted. The only times she's ever been open was when someone managed to break down her walls like how she was willing to talk about getting declawed in the first film or when she overheard Puss expressing his regrets about Santa-Coloma. My supposition is that she was trying to close herself off from Puss because she wants to quash any hopes he has of winning her back because they are technically competing to get to the Star first, which can only grant one wish and Puss has a reputation of being a lady killer. Kitty has also expressed how she's never had anyone she could really trust a couple of times and declawed cats can become more aggressive than most.
The artbook mentions twice that she didn't show up at their wedding, which makes me believe that that's what happened and the reason why she was constantly reminding him of that occasion was that she understands him well enough to know even he would be avoiding the ceremony.
Oh she definitely was telling the truth and didn't show up. I wrote a few essays on the matter so I'll keep this short with 2 main points.
1.) If she had showed up there would have been NO WAY to save the relationship. That would have been too heart breaking.
2.) Her arc is about learning to trust agai . Her wish is about trusting. If she lied to Puss there and did show up but didn't want to hurt his feelings, it would mean she couldn't trust him with HER feelings. Her heart. To tell the truth to someone is to trust them, lies are made for selfpreservation and from fear.

@@ChasehaWing I'm totally down to read your essays XD Also, yes, the whole arc Puss and Kitty go through in building up their relationship in this movie is sostantially learning how to create a bond that is more sincere and more stable, which is also why the tree scene is so important: they are now communicating honestly and openly after speaking half thruths for a long time, and have a better understanding of each other and their point of view on that whole ordeal.
Jack's line "Pleasure doing ehhh." with the dismissive handwave freaking killed me. He's just a wonderfully awful villain.😂❤
One thing I found myself really liking about Jack Horner is that while the entire movie makes him out to be this cruel scumbag, it actually introduces him complementing the pie chefs that work for him. Not for the sake of it either. Jack genuinely thought the pies they made were delicious. That’s a really cool decision on the writer’s part.

I'd argue that Perrito's path is the darkest thing in the entire movie and is completely unspoken genius, because absolutely no one notices what it means, and everyone thinks it's just surface value because of Perrito's optimistic nature, but the map seems to imply that Perrito's optimism isn't so much out of ignorance, but life experience and he may actually be the wisest and most resilient character in the whole movie, and it's ALL in the subtext and in how his path is laid out.
The Pocketful of Posies is a reminder to literally smell the roses, but it's also a reference to the nursery rhyme which has the creepy undertone of being based on the real life horror of the plague, as plague doctors would cover those who died from the plague to help ward off the horrible smell of the dead before they were cremated, in essence, the location is a reminder that life is short, so you should savor it while it lasts.
The river of relaxation is a direct reference to Perrito's own past where he was beaten, stuffed in a sock and thrown in the bottom of a river and left to die slowly and painfully, again, overlaying the theme of life being short and to make the most of it, as Perrito only survived by clinging to life and fighting his way out, likely being relieved to just still being alive after the ordeal.
And the final location is "The Field of Quick and Easy Solutions", which I don't think we ever got to see in the movie (or I don't remember), so we don't know what it's trials would have been, but as continuing with the dark themes, I think it's probably best that we didn't see it in the kids movie, as this would line up as an allegory for suicide, which is often what those who are severely depressed or have suicidal tendencies view as a "quick and easy solution" to suffering.
Keep in mind, Perrito's path is by no means free of dangers, it's absolutely filled with them, but you can only navigate it with the right mindset, if you don't, the world will literally eat you up and spit you out, like members of Jack's crew who got killed by the posies, the underlying message in Perrito's path, is you can either go through life suffering, kicking, and screaming, or you can try and make the most of it and be grateful for what you have, no matter how little you have, there's something worth living for in the world, no matter how small it may seem.
In my opinion, Perrito is potentially the best written character in the entire story, and acts as a direct parallel to every single character in one way or another, by either being a mirror to make them self-reflect, or from a thematic perspective for the audience, and it's fucking genius-
Jack and Perrito are complete opposites, with Perrito being an innocent, optimistic, altruistic, homeless dog who had possibly one of the absolute worst lives imaginable, and has decided to make the most of it to have a positive impact on the world. While Jack is literally a spoiled rich boy who wants to become god and tortures and kills people for fun.
But I think the most genius connection is between Perrito, and Death, and how they would have a dynamic that would be the direct opposite of Puss and Death, as we know that Death despises everything about how Puss arrogantly throws his lives away for petty things while acting like he's immortal, where as Perrito is practically Death's living thesis statement, to the point that I think you could argue that the same way Death bent the rules to chase after Puss, I think you could say he potentially bent the rules and spared Perrito in the past without him even knowing it-
But also these creators are on crack with insane attention to detail, so you wanna know what's a fascinating detail?-
The only two canine characters in the entire movie-
Are Death, who takes the form of a wolf, and Perrito-
And while Death may be the literal personification with no fancy meanings-
I think there's enough evidence to say that Death's ENTIRE spiel about how he's not "metaphorically, or rhetorically, or theoretically, or poetically" Death, but literally so-
ALSO HIGHLIGHTS THE DETAIL that Perrito is ALL THOSE THINGS, but as the "personification" of Life for the movie, literally making him the voice for why life is worth living, and adding a matching, but mirrored voice to Death in pretty much every single way-
And maybe you think I'm stretching, BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE INSANE-
They literally put so much unneeded extra attention to detail in EVERY SINGLE DETAIL, I think it would be a stretch for it to NOT be intentional at this point-
It is SO good, that by default, on further analysis, I think this movie is a true modern timeless masterpiece-
And while this Death may not be my favorite depiction of Death (that still goes to Discworld).
Perrito is quite possibly, one of my favorite characters of all time, because no amount of fumbling, can possibly fuck up how perfectly tied up his character is in this movie-
Even if Shrek 5 or whatever happens next decided to destroy that and do something like say "Actually Perrito was tricking everyone all along and was evil actually", it wouldn't even put a scratch in how flawlessly flawed this character is in this movie-
The themes are positively gourmet, and I'm a sucker for that shit.

In fact the map shows it has a bunch of what are called "hangmans trees" with even a seat swinging under one of them. Even that alone could be a double entendre with the seat. young innocent plaything with a darker adult possibility."
I love how even months later, I can still learn new little details like this from other people, and I think that's a testament to how much of a detailed and thought out masterpiece this movie really is. It's not just a kids movie, it truly is a movie that's made for all audiences, which is exceptionally rare and difficult to pull off on this level.

Perrito being a personification of life is something that I thought too when I watched the movie. It makes a lot of sense and... Also you can make the pun about life being short.
Let's also add that the villains make great opposites of the heroes.: As you noted, Perrito and Jack are opposites in one being so wholesome, accepting and kind and the other being ruthless, evil and uncaring. For the others, Puss is opposite of Lobo because of life and death. For Kitty and Goldie, they both feel alone in different ways. Goldie trusts her family, but she wants something to feel like she belongs, while Kitty trusts no one, and feels alone, wanting anyone to trust, essentially both wanting family for different reasons.

But also, I feel like it's unfair to call two of the antagonists "villains", as Goldie, while she and the bears are a crime family, isn't really evil, just misguided and that's what makes them such good antagonists, because they contrast and clash with the other characters while not exactly being evil.
The same with Death, whose motivation is entirely separate from everyone else going after the wish (which is, again another thing he has in common with Perrito, as they're the only ones in the main cast that don't care about the wish itself, but rather, they're both motivated by Puss), his goal is to humble Puss and shatter his ego that has made him throw so many lives away over basically nothing.
The only true evil villain in the movie is Jack, and he's the perfect foil to every other character in the movie combined, in both how he's different from them, but also similar, like Goldie, he's a crime boss, but unlike her, he doesn't care about "family" and is a spoiled rich kid, who never went through any of the hardships of life. With Death, they both serve the roles of forces of nature almost, with Death being literal, while Jack is just pure evil and cruelty chasing after an endless desire for unlimited power. And the parallel is strongest with Boots, who wasted away his lives seeking glory and never truly appreciating anything, while Jack has a much more direct version of this, as he literally throws away a dozen lives in the pursuit of his wish, because holds absolutely nothing as being more important than his pursuit of power.
And that's why it's so fitting in the end, he's the one who runs out of lives and actually falls to his literal Death.
With the reaper established as an actual entity, it makes me wish that we had some hint or after credits that whenever Jack fell, the last thing he heard was that whistle that followed Boots all movie long.
I love that when you watch the "deleted scenes" or "cut songs" of most movies you think 'oh in another world the story we could have had-' but with the last wish, this IS the best version of the story

The Last Wish is one of my favorite animated adventure movies. Funny enough, Shrek 2 is one of my favorites for both comedies and animated family movies. The Shrek franchise deserves all the praise it got in the early 2000s, and I'd like to see a Shrek 5 done with all the care and consideration of this movie (and Shrek 2 of course).
They may be "family-friendly" or "for kids" yet I still fully enjoy watching them as an adult in my mid-20s; I can't say the same about any of Disney's new animated films.
20:41 I found myself tearing up the first time I saw this scene. All I could think of where the moments where my own dogs laid next to me when I was having a bad day and it made it just a bit better.
I think every dog over ever will recognize that scene, where your bud just comes to lie beside you and offers you nothing but pure companionship.
I've seen the movie several times now, yet I tear up every time at that scene cause it reminds me of my own dogs as well
Before I got a dog in 2017, my cat would be the one to recognize I was having an episode and come to comfort me. Even after we got the dog, my cat would come first, and my dog learned from him to come in my crisis moments. Five years after my cat passed, my dog has been there for me. I saw the scene before I saw the movie and damn near cried because of how well it was done.
I ended up watching the movie with like 18 other furries (yes I'm a degen myself) and it turned into a comedic moment when the host paused the movie when Puss put his paw on Perrito's head by mistake.
The pairing of Ethical Bug and Big Jack Horner was just so perfect. Couldn’t help but bust a gut at Bug’s reactions to everything, all the while trying in vain to tease some goodness out of Jack, only to finally snap and give up with a solid “YOU’RE AN IRREDEEMABLE MONSTER!”
And Jack's mocking "Ah-hur-dur-dur took you long enough!" What a complete bastard. 😅

Silly: New Goblin. Seriously, he looks more like a hired mercenary than a goblin (and I just realized that’s a subtle call back)
What I like is how instead of furrowing his eyebrows or spending the whole movie looking angry in an attempt to make him look “scary,” Death keeps opening his eyes wide open. It adds a whole new creepy factor to his grin, these straight up just red circles with tiny dots in the middle. Plus it can also be interpreted as eye-holes in a skull.
That's a great observation! You could possibly even see it the other way, by the end. At the end of their fight, Puss is the one with his eyes open and clear, and Death is narrowing his eyes in one last attempt to intimidate him.
Yes, I liked it too. It makes him look like a predator on a prowl, eyeing up a morsel.
It also makes his face look a little more skull-like
Honestly this film is one of the few I’d consider a masterpiece. Even at its weakest points you get a lot out of it, it’s shocking how well done this was.
@breadandcircuses8127 honestly between outstanding animation, writing, acting, and setting (music, backgrounds, etc.) it’s already there, but then you look at the tropes it uses that are normally considered over used or just used poorly, they were able to make it work (e.g. modern comedy relief [Perrito]). On top of that, they manage three diverse groups of antagonists that have varying motivations and degrees of complexity that add to the journey of the story (relatable/redeemable antagonist, unredeemable antagonist, and pure antagonist [I don’t know how to describe Death as an antagonist more than the purest form of antagonist]). Throw in the fact that it balances lighthearted and deep and complex storylines so well while address an audience of any real age…I just don’t feel like I’ve seen that in so many years, I struggle to even think of another movie that does all of this so well.

Nobody touches on it, but I really enjoy the (at 22:40) scene of them dancing into the air, which is a callback to what they do during their first meeting in the first movie where they fight, and do the same move. I think its a nice touch XD

I compared it to velma when this movie came out because of how it portrays with dealing with anxiety/panic attacks. in Puss in boots: the last wish, it shows Purrito being a calming presence with the person and helping the sufferer slowing regain their surroundings, whereas in Velma, how Daphne helps the sufferer deal with a panic attack is to physically assault them and then sexually assault them
Yeah, they're being compared not because the stories are similar, it's just a really good example of how kids' media frequently has more genuine, actual respect for its mature themes than stuff (supposedly) aimed at adults.
Velma f'ed that up on every level, despite having sex jokes and gore aplenty it's relentlessly immature. Whereas Last Wish has two drops of blood seen in the whole movie, and felt like the more grown-up story.

Puss in Boots 2 is the Majora's Mask of film animation, with its unexpected beauty, deep messages and an overall darker setting.
Truely one of its kind.
It's kind of the total opposite though.
Majora's mask was rushed out the door with mostly recycled assets in a year and a half as a follow up to one of the biggest games of its time
The Last Wish took a decade to release with a completely original style as a follow up to a very unremarkable movie most people forget about after viewing

What got me hooked was how death cut Puss minutes after he sang a song about never being touched by a blade. That's a great way to show what a threat he is and why Puss would be scared of him.
This movie proves that we need more traditional villains in animated movies.
Super Mario Bros too with Bowser. He was entertaining and also a bit intimidating at certain parts.
This movie manages to have its cake and eat it too, with the Three Bears family being sympathetic and Death just being a force of nature. Great villain characters all the way round :)

When I went to first see Last Wish with some of my college friends, one of them said that it was his 5th time seeing the movie in theaters. They were so excited to see it that they would have left me behind had I not called them, and after seeing the movie, I can totally understand why they would because I was mesmerized by the artistry and heart put into it.
I noticed that the map reflects their wishes. Puss, who wants to live longer, has dangerous potentially deadly things, and self reflection. Kitty, who wants to trust someone, has misery and loneliness. Goldi, who wants a family, has to view the Nostalgia of what she already has. Perrito, who just wants to help his friends, has easy solutions and a nice walk! It's SOOO clever and gives you an early insight to Kitty's wish if you connect the dots.
It feels like a defense mechanism of the forest.

I’m gonna be brutally honest when I say this, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is my favourite movie of all time
I’ve seen many phenomenal movies from many years across many different mediums but something about this movie stuck with me personally. It’s themes were exactly what I needed at the time I watched it, I had a weird nostalgic connection to it because of my childhood love of the character and its style has inspired me creatively in so many ways. So much so that it has inspired me to learn to animate
Also, I think Doug’s point at the very end that this is ultimately a simple, well made movie is fascinating. It’s not trying to be overly clever, it’s not trying to subvert your expectations every few seconds (except for surprising you by the fact that it’s actually good movie) and it’s not trying to be anything it isn’t. It sticks by what it sets out to do and does it really really well
I think the reason why it felt nostalgic is because it treated you like an adult.
Not once did it shy away from the ugly of the world. It wasn't contrived or forced. It let you come to your own conclusions and didn't scream what its message was.
Recently I watched some old classics like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the Wizard of Oz. Although they outright said the message and morals at the end, it didn't shy away from showing you the ugly while getting there. The greed of people, the vileness some people are, or how some people are willing to disregard advice even when shown what happens to those who don't listen or throw caution to the wind. But it also shows that there are in fact genuinely good people willing to give a hand and care for one another.
This movie has all that and a lot of what modern movies are missing.

It's just a fantastic movie. The characters. The animation. The story, while simple and not entirely new, is told so well to near-perfection. Also! Wanted to point something out since you pointed out those small details they had in the movie. Remember when they said the wish operates on "birthday wish rules?" If you tell somebody your wish, it doesn't come true. Everybody that had a wish told someone what their wish was. In the end, nobody got to make their wish. Is that not cool as all hell? Seriously, they did such an INCREDIBLE job on this movie from top-to-bottom.
Well, I think that in the end, all who touched the map got their wish, altough without the star and not in the way they envisioned.
Jack (who helds the map briefly during the fights) wants to have all the magic in the world. He ends up drowning in the most potent magic there is, but without the ability to control it
Perrito altough he said he didn´t WANT a wish, he still admitted that he would like a name of his own and family, and he got both with Puss and Kitty
Puss wanted new lives, and he ended up starting a new life with Kitty and Perrito
Kitty wanted somebody she could fully trust, and she found that in Puss and Perrito
Goldi wanted a real family, she found one, not the one she imagined, but one that is "just right" for her
"I don't believe you!"
"That's fine. As long as you believe in yourself."
My favorite line in the whole movie.
I love how every fiber of your being is SCREAMING at you to expect Puss to laugh in Death's face once he's triumphed over him in the climax, yet he just stands there...stoic...staring Death in the face with all the severity of a man...err, cat...who's gone through hell and back: he ain't afraid any more...he's accepted Death as his shadow, that it will one day swallow him whole...just not today. Also, major props to this movie playing the "Maybe the REAL adventure was the friends we made along the way" card and ACTUALLY meaning it. But yeah, this is easily one of my all-time favorite films, and I genuinely feel like this will go down as an all-time classic; one viewing, much like with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was all it took. I'm not afraid to say I started blubbering like a baby in a few scenes of the movie; it is BEAUTIFUL! Say it with me, now: "Who is your favorite fearless hero? PUSS IN BOOTS!" =^.^=

Though, to be fair, I didn't notice Death standing in the crowd at first, so...whew...this film is REALLY good at sweating the small stuff. I love when films have those "blink and you miss it" kinda details. Makes repeat watches more enjoyable and makes you really appreciate the film more and more. :O
Concerning Perrito's backstory, I always thought he did figure it out in the past, or that he was depressed before, but at some point managed to look waaaaaay past it. And that's what made him wanna be a therapy dog.
He could be bitter or he could be better. Perrito chooses better. And that makes everyone around him better, too.

Despite the horrible things that happen to us, you always have a choice to be a good person, even if that choice is the harder one.
I like to read the scene where perrito is explaining his tragic backstory, and laughing at it, I think he may have actually understood what was going on, but he's just the kind of person that accepted it as it was and chose to preserver towards a happy life even so, because that's just who perrito is. And when you accept tragic things in your past, you laugh at them, for some people it's a necessary step in not letting your trauma define who you are. It seems to me like he processed it and left it in the past where it belongs.
I can NOT express enough as someone with anxiety how much the panic attack scene meant to me. Its so accurate.

10:38 I mean... at this point in the movie, Death could just as easily have been a bounty hunter that preferred to bring his bounties in dead, if given the choice. That's why Puss declared Death to be a bounty hunter when Death first pulled out the wanted poster. There are clues to his true identity throughout the scene, but considering that this is a world of fairy tales and nursery rhymes, one could assume that Death was one as well prior to the reveal.
I love how Jack's rhyme is "What a good boy am I" and they subvert that by making him the most evil character in the shrek universe

@@craigrobbins2463 meh I watched the first one after seeing the second and it was perfectly fine, it actually made me enjoy the last wish even more on rewatch since they have lots of little easter eggs referencing the first.
The opening to this movie is one of the best I've ever seen, it's such a perfect example of how to do a well established "day in the life sequence"
I do want to point out another aspect of the first action scene in the governor's house and the giant. I believe that scene is important to the movie for, not only the reasons you mentioned, of which I actually do not even remembering considering, but also because it establishes Puss as a good fighter. That is ESSENTIAL if you want death to seem like even more of a formidable threat. Because if you do not know that Puss is a good fighter, Then when he struggles against fighting death, people could just make the assumption that he is simply a not a good fighter, rather then death being a strong antagonist. Sure, you could argue removing the scene could do both. But it emphasizes the true power of death, as it, or rather, he, was the only thing that could actually put Puss in his place.
It also gives the opportunity to establish that "He has never been touched by a blade" and Death does just that.
Best sequal ever made.

I've watched this movie almost a half dozen times and I just can't get over it. It's been more than a decade since a movie came out, that I willingly watched over and over. Easily the best movie of the 2020s so far, and the new of my top 5 of all time. Simply put, this movie is perfect.
This was the best Nostalgia Critic opening. I was legit scared for their lives.👍😂
I got chills from the wistle
I know that the romance between Puss and Kitty doesn't get talked about a lot when it comes to discussions about the movie, if anything because it's sooo full of amazing things to gush about it gets drowned by everything else, but there are three things I wanna give to them that I think really sell their story to me:
1) their scenes together are absolutely gorgeous to look at, especially the tree one. The pink aestethic and the amount of detail (the heart-shaped lens flare is just chef's kiss, for me) always leaves me in awe, it's a scene I always look forward to. Also, the stars in their eyes when they look at each other are just the cutest thing;
2) "One life spent with you is all that I could wish for" is absolutely one of the best romantic lines spoken in animation history and I will DIE on this hill;
3) Most important of all: their relationship is an integral part of their growth as characters. By the end, they both have to learn to let people into their lives because that is what gives life meaning: loving people and letting yourself be loved.
Their unability to let other people in stems from their main character flaws. Puss very clearly has issues forming significant bonds and maintaining them and his persona is bigger than himself and wouldn't let anything perceived as not fitting that image get in. Kitty, who's been reliant on herself alone for her whole life, has to learn to trust others and lean on them. I think their relationship works very well because it perfectly ties in with the main message of the movie, which is a memento that life in one, death is inevitable, and because of that we should all cherish the bonds we have with the people that love us, which requires, though, for you to be vulnerable and to trust the other.
I'm also glad that they make it very clear that calling off the wedding was actually a good thing (the means by which that was achieved might have been better handled, sure 😅) because they weren't a good fit at the time, but that they might be now that they've both grown and matured.
There are also some other things not entirely linked to them specifically that make me appreciate their relationship even more (I could gush about the gatito blade for a LOOONG time) but yeah, my main point is: as much as their romance is not as integral or as present in the movie as it is in others, I still feel it plays a pivotal part in it and what they did with it it's absolutely beautiful
Regarding #2...I will gladly take up arms to defend that statement as well because it is so freaking true
it’s incredible how they made 2 bipedal cats, romantically love each other, and not make it weird or uncomfortable
Dreamworks has an amazing track record for good romances in their animated movies.
They're not about romance but about chemistry, connections, and making a relationship work.
In the first Puss movie, you can see Jack and Jill having a conversation about children. One of the wants to have kids and the other doesn't. They disagree, but they don't yell at each other or toss verbal abuse. They work through it, like a functional relationship.
Although not a great movie, it's nice to see a relationship that doesn't devolve to bickering and constant fighting that make you ask, "WHY ARE YOU EVEN MARRIED?? YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T LOVE EACH OTHER!!"
@@ZatchZXman truly, they make some of the best couples. The more I think about them the more I realize how many great ones there are. They might not have as many memorable moments as some of Disney's most iconic ones but I feel they have something better: a deep connection and understanding of each other, as you noted. I love that in this one they also tried to showcase a couple that is working towards that goal.
@@ZatchZXman if I do recall it right, she did toss a bit of verbal abuse to him. That said, the casual way it is taken by both parts imply it is part of their own marital dinamics, and its cute they get to compromise by "try with the pigs first".
P.D.: Adding a mandatory Stoick reference because there is no way in hell talking about romance in dreamworks doesnt include him, even if he pretty much had like 20 minutes tops split between three movies.
I love how Goldie’s story arc is hinted at right at the beginning, when she and the bears are introduced the only words left visible on their wanted poster are “want family”.
One of the funniest out of left field funny lines is during the crystal palace scene when death walks in he says, "...the smell of fear is, INTOXICATING." and the drunk death Puss says, "What is?!"
I think he said “It is?” like he wants to try it too
This movie is such an inspiration.
It goes so much harder, and has so much effort, heart, and detail than it has any right to be.

Honestly, I felt like the skipped frames idea was done far better in this film than in Spiderverse. Spiderverse would add frame skips all over the place, including during comparatively mundane moments like the two spideys learning to swing, which caused me to feel like the visuals were just stuttering. Meanwhile, Puss puts them more specifically during moments of intense excitement and action when things are already being stylized to show rapid speed, causing the stutters to give more of an impression similar to looney tunes when characters snap into different poses or actions in response to other snappy actions.
I might be explaining this terribly because it's really hard for me to understand the strange feeling I have about the two examples, but I think I'm getting the point across?
Spiderverse pushes the envelope too much, and overuses it to the point of it just losing the impact it could've had, meanwhile Puss in Boots used it surgically to help make the exciting moments more impactful?
During Puss's second fight with La Muerte Lobo he yelled at Puss: "POR QUÉ DIABLOS FUI A JUGAR CON MI COMIDA" which translates to "WHY THE HELL DID I HAVE TO PLAY WITH MY FOOD!?" I had to look this up because I do not speak Spanish. Now I repeat this line so many times because it's so funny.

He actually said it in present tense, "por qué diablos voy a jugar..." implying as "why am I going to play with..."

Perrito was definitely the character I was impressed the most with. A lesser film would have made him extremely annoying and the clear sole comic relief for kids. Instead, they made him relatable, sweet, justifiably innocent and most importantly believable, while still being a funny character. I think I groaned when he showed up because I assumed what was coming, but it never did. The scene where he calms Puss from a panic attack got me legit emotional because it felt so real.
It did not take long for me to love Perrito. He was just done so well.

10:27 Too be fair on the twist, bounty hunters comes in all shapes and sizes. It's not uncommon for those who want to have a grim reaper-like appearance to add an extra layer of fear when they're hunting their target.
And secondly, when was there ever any indication that Death could take a physical form in any of the Shrek and/or Puss in Boots films that predated this one? Unless it's confirmed that Death is a Shapeshifter and was secretly hiding in various areas where a major character dies, (like maybe he was appearing as one of the guests during Lord Farquaad's wedding, or attending the party during the Fairy Godmother's demise, just to name a couple of examples,) Death, (as in the physical embodiment himself and not the actual force of nature,) was never seen before this movie.
He’s probably waiting for the dead anyways, just had a thing against puss bc of what puss had done before the events of this film (timeline wise at least).
I wish Critic had talked a lot more about Death. He had very limited screen time and yet he’s one of the decades best antagonists to come out in that time. There’s a-lot to talk about with him.
A sad moment that is unnoticed:
A small and subtle one with the brief cameo of Pinocchio - the man next to him is Geppetto, meaning this version of Pinocchio didn't have an pair of evil con-men, neither an evil puppeteer or a coachman who abused his magical nature. *It was his own father,* ignoring his son to count his money. By the time Shrek rolled around, said father willfully abandons his son under the new rules.
More unnoticed than underrated.
But yeah, THAT IS DARK
Speaking of which, the fact that this scene was a part of this movie after *3* Pinocchio movies came out is nothing short of comedic timing.

One little thing I noticed that’s really interesting is how different Puss acts after his encounter with Death at the bar. You’ll notice that he’s a lot more anxious and scared about things such as Jack Horner’s ruthlessness, running away from the bears at the cat home, and his worry about entering the dark forest. His mortality is constantly on his mind. Plus, the times that death reappears coincide with Puss reverting to or thinking about his past self with his legacy.
The reason why velma and Puss in Boots 2 we're compared was because of how they both handled panic attacks.

If anything, I'd argue the difference was that PIB was confident in its belief that adults and children could both find a mature, emotional story, while Velma was so concerned with sounding adult and edgy that it alienated both kids and adults. Kids because it was too R rated, adults because it was trying so hard to be adult that it ironically came across as adolescent. Like one of those edgy 2000s Nu Metal bands made up of teens trying to sound badass but really just sounding whiny.

Puss and Boots The Last Wish is one of the greatest animated movies I've seen in a long time
This movie really is a perfect example of a film that is so much better than it has any right being.
Even if the line is overused it the movie, it really did do nearly everything "just right".
Perrito, could have been such an annoying character. But he balances out the group so well. They also knew to avoid one of the biggest mistakes with characters like him, he never ruins a moment with some cheap joke or bit. Like Puss' panic attack, they could have ruined it with Perrito doing some dumb joke or gag. But even with the comic relief character, they play it straight & respectfully. Which is why it's such a powerful moment.
I love how they avoided that cliche group break up with Goldilocks (whose design & attitude I LOVE btw) when she said she wanted to wish for her real family. Yet the Bears still supported her.
Jack Horner was also refreshing just to have an irredeemably evil person that just relishes in what a monster he is. Having Jiminy Cricket as his "conscience" get more & more fed up with him & lose his optimism of there being "good in all people" was hilarious.
And of course making Wolf Death was just a perfect choice. I love how they were able to make a whistle so haunting. It's also great how you can't straight up call him a villian. He's a great example of an "antagonist" without being a villian (like Jack).
Definitely a hidden gem of a movie.

This was the last movie my boyfriend and I watched before I had to move to help care for my weakening brother who had to be revived 5 times the year before and probably his last year. This movie has hit super hard but we still love it.
