When I first saw this film, I heard kids behind me crying because they were so scared of the wolf. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen since Coraline.
They managed to make a comic relief character into the deepest character in the Shrek universe! This movie is truly amazing and is definitely my favorite movie in the Shrek franchise!
15:18 honestly I think it’s perfect they didn’t get a wish as they pretty much got what they wished for. Goldy realised she had a perfect family, kitty had people to trust and Puss learnt that he could appreciate the life he had. I think it would of been funny if Perrito had wished for like a pizza or something, Gravity Falls time wish style!
When I saw Death in theaters, I knew that one day, I wanted to make an animated movie with an antagonist as terrifying as he was. The way he was introduced and the way he fights, it's just so freaking epic. Essentially, I wanna traumatize my own character. I can't stop gushing over how chilling and awesome he was. Even Perrito was hilarious, and I thought he would be annoying. But Jack Horner! I love this irredeemable monster.
Hehehe, gotta find it interesting how English-speaking people (only) are not able to pronounce/write Perrito properly (as in Doggy or Puppy in Spanish).
This movie is literally the pathway to PG-13 and R-Rated animated movies. Side note, I noticed that one of the few times, or possibly the only time, Death is announced by his whistle is in the Soul Cave scene. Instead, he just _appears_ out of nowhere, instantly ramping up the tension by taking away the thing you've been taught to look out for.
I was blown away by the whole movie. I watched it with some friends and we all loved it. The visuals, the characters, the memes. I loved this. I can’t wait to see what Dreamworks will do for their next movies

If I’m being completely honest, this movie completely delivered the trust message very well unlike a certain movie where a dragon blindly trusts anyone even if they’re a tyrant.
I actually can't get enough of this movie, I'm watching every video about it I can, and I still get the tears up when I see the flashbacks, and oh my god am I the only one that thinks that 2 scenes with Puss' 8 lives (the first one when he discovers them and the second with Death) is the best scene in this movie ? Seriously, seeing his lives sing "who is your favourite fearless hero" made me cry so much in theaters
You know it gets more of a weird feeling that Death was always there since the beginning, so it can represent "Death is always around the corner when you least expect it.." quote :)
Wow, this this is exactly it. Whenever I have a visual or story idea it always comes in the form of animation or something similar. Combine it with artistic skill in coloring, composition, pacing... well-done animation is beautifully evocative.
Another interesting review by Awesomemay! Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is seriously amazing, and I have to say Death is one of the best villains put to screen in an animated movie, or maybe cinema entirely. Everything about him is so creepy, the way he speaks, his whistle, and especially his amazing design. Really interesting seeing Puss in Boots implement elements of horror (especially with Death), and I hope more animated movies do this!
Every time the wolf was on screen expected the final battel I was on edge. He was so perfectly crafted to make you feel what puss feels and emerge you into the movie.
Death is definitely going on a Gen Alpha Childhood Trauma Iceberg sometime in the future. I would love a full on horror movie where he stalks a protagonist ala Perfect Blue or Drag me to Hell, silently taunting them and with a full R rating. Maybe like an animated Final Destination.
8:53 The whistle is actually a reference to Man with a Harmonica from "Once Upon A Time In The West", where he would signal his entrances with a Harmonica If you haven't seen Once Upon A Time In the West, I would highly recommend it, it's really good and The Last Wish takes a lot of inspiration from it
This is why I wana be a animator I want to make people as happy as this beautiful man right here and show how much animation is and any one any age can love it not just little kids u love it when ur young and live it when ur older ❤
SAME!! I saw the animation and I wanted to cry from how gorgeous it looked. Made me feel happy thinking about how I could be making something like this one day and making other people feel how I did
This is actually amazing. Dreamworks have been able to tell amazing stories before, the closest to this I can think of is Kung Fu Panda 2. But this feels almost like another level of good.
One thing I’ve rarely seen mentioned so maybe it’s just me (also I haven’t finished the vid so maybe you mentioned it) but in Puss’s theme it has a whistle in the background to it similar to Death’s. It always made me nervous that the Wolf was going to show up at any moment. Sometimes he did and sometimes he didn’t. It was perfect in holding tension for me.
What made this movie so captivating for me was the first scene with death. Puss was so sure he could defeat this so-called "bounty hunter ". After all, we had just seen him take down a freaking giant, he could handle a wolf, right? But the tables had turned within an instant. And as memories flashed through his mind with every clash of death's blades I began to feel... afraid? I had never before watched an animated film that could make me feel anything more than slightly anxious or creeped out. But this movie changed that. I honestly hope they get this experimental with upcoming projects.
I first assumed the blood on puss' head was wine or something else, like in a lot of other movies too and I was pretty speechless (although already being quiet) seeing it was actual blood and I'm sure I wasn't the only one
Love this review! You dive deep into the horror elements of the film and what makes it all work and tie together perfectly. It’s always nice seeing someone very passionate about animation! Hopefully Dreamworks keep up this streak of great movies
I grew up with Puss in boots. I loved watching the tv show and the movies he was in. He was one of my favorite characters and still is. I always admired the way his character was so fearless and confident. So to see Puss give up because of he was so scared, that his pride and power was taken away from him in just one scene just hurt something inside of me. I low key sobbed watching that happen. It was like i was in the story and I was helpless to do anything except watch. But I loved watching this movie, the power these animators held over me was JUST STRONG. Everything about this movie was just perfect.
Future sequel. Puss is old, on his death bed, surrounded by kids and grandkids, and then we hear the whistle… What was that line from Deathly Hallows? And he greets Death as an old friend. And then we get an end scene of one of the grandkids putting on the boots.
I've seen so many great videos about the wolf, including this one, and I've never seen anyone comment on the fact that he's voiced by the guy who played Pablo Escobar in Narcos. He has a lot more range than I'd realized!
Crazy thing, you can spot Death in the opening fight. When Puss is jumping to give the giant the Spanish Splinter, you can see Death in the back of the crowd, stood in an alley, just watching Puss in action. I think that proves that DreamWorks really cares about the movie, and wants to win that Best Animated Feature. (I swear, if it doesn't...)
I just love when PG animated films actually feels the most intense and how certain scenes are straight-up horror. The Last Wish pretty much gave me more than I expect and I love every moment of it. It didn't feel like a kids' movie (again, it's a *family* picture and animated films G or PG aren't for kids only) and felt more oriented to older viewers who grew up with Shrek. Anything with the wolf, the rather mature themes and even more intense violence (i.e. the visible blood drop from Puss' forehead and the two "Spanish splinter" scenes that made my fingers cfinge uncomfortably), the film has it.
Puss In Boots is like a baby, it gets hyped up, then praised, but when it’s older people forget about it. I just needed to say that for no real reason.
Everyone went it expecting Perrito to be the Cliche goody character who's usually annoying but We All came out with the mindset " If any harm comes to that puppy, We're all Calling John Wick"
This movie feels so much like one of those old westerns that I'd be shocked if it wasn't inspired by them! And in general, this is so much better than it had any right to be. It's clever, it's scary, it's amazing to look at and has some of the best writing and dialogue I've heard in years. Jack's reaction to the cricket as well as the cricket's growing frustration over Jack's apathy never fail to make me laugh
Fun Fact: Death didn't appear in the Tavern/Bar first. He actually showed up behind the Crowd (that did the wave) when Puss was fighting against the Giant (Before he died an 8th time). He just simply was chilling in the shadows. Since Puss laughs in the face of death, he never noticed Death was always there for every life he died at. A truly outstanding move. Death was always there. He's fully justified on killing Puss' last life. This made his appearance more so build up way before the Doctor told him of Death
this movie was so good, and the Shrek soundtrack fading in at the end made me lose it. I love the new crispy comical way dreamworks is leaning in, it feels so fresh. Hyped for more animated movies from dreamworks
I really really liked this movie, not only cuz of story and animation but because I was able to relate too Puss, I’ve had panic/anxiety attacks like that before and it really made me feel involved, can’t wait for more movies from them.
"Animation is a (kids') genre" is something that DreamWorks might finally be able to change people's minds on. Animation is not a genre, it's a medium, and it needs to be treated as such. I'm glad that it's starting to become more expressed in the work that more mainstream studios such as DreamWorks are beginning to put out. The visuals have spark and personality and *life,* and the stories are getting better and better with well-developed themes and the characters to deliver them without pulling any punches. We need more of that. As a person that can't stand anime for the art styles and dies every time I hear someone talking about one with good stories to tell because I just can't make myself watch them, I'm glad that western animation is slowly starting to catch up in terms of respecting itself enough to begin to, even if slowly, expand its target audience. If studios get the confidence to make big-budget animated horror movies, I'll gladly pay to go see it even if it turns out bad because that little niche needs to be expanded significantly because as a horror enjoyer and an animation enthusiast, there is simply not enough of it past a few foreign films I was able to find through some very exhausting research.
I will say that this is definitely my favorite animated movie of 2022, and I've been waiting for what feels like forever until I get to watch it again.
Watching the movie was actually so good, I had many heart felt moments and I would say that this will be the best animated film that represents for adults and kids together
This movie is honestly just incredible! I’ve seen it twice at the cinemas now. I can’t wait for the future of the shrek franchise too. Whenever the 5th mainline movie does eventually come out. Probably by the time Toy Story 5 does… (cough, cough) lol
12:15 that wasn't just what you thought, you know what I thought when I saw the blue flowers? they have SPIKES, you can see the beauty and you can love the smell of the flowers, but once you touch them, you're going to feel "hurt" something I didn't expected coming from Perrito "world", but it makes so much sense coming from him, he doesn't really care about the bad things in the world, that's why he can appreciate the flowers without being hurt by them, something the cats really can't at the first time, and I MEAN IT, just think by yourself like the movie made you think lol | Kitty Softpaws and puss in boots literally didn't trusted each at first, only in the half of the movie she trusted him, just like the flowers that attacked them when they didn't trusted the flowers, I think that world has so much more to offer in terms of character dynamics, is a shame we didn't got to see more
The blood, the panic attack, the existencial dread of death, the bleeped out cursing from Perrito. Shattering expectations of the audience is what I think makes dreamworks different.
Haven’t seen the movie yet (desperately want to tho) but sometimes, I kind of wonder when the internet’s Puss in Boots phase will end. I mean, the internet has gone through an Encanto phase, a Luca phase, and even with a bunch of stuff beyond animation (Squid Game, for example. Remember when people wouldn’t stop talking about that?) It kind of scares me that in like, a year, people will stop talking about this movie. If Dreamworks DOES enter it’s new “golden legacy”, it MIGHT get referenced every now and then as the movie that “saved” dreamworks. However…it’s so weird that one everyone will forget about it (or at least not talk about it as much)
Honestly, same. The Internet is fickle and once they find a new hyped-up series/film, Puss in Boots will kinda fade away. I guess it's inevitable and I think one thing Dreamworks can do to keep this film 'fresh' is by giving us cameos of Death in their future movies since it makes sense he'll be lurking around the corner...
I love this movie so much, it's truly done what other movies could never. One other thing I noticed (actually, luckyleftie on TikTok first brought it up) is that Death's weapons are not scythes, which were originally intended for harvest, but rather shotels, weapons designed for war that were able to cut down shields and yank riders off mounts. By wielding weapons of war rather than harvest, it shows he hasn't come to collect Puss's life naturally, but instead to forcefully end it himself. Ironically, the scythe is what people use when they depict the physical manifestation of Death, but again, the Grim Reaper is just there to harvest (or reap) lives at their natural time. I love how much thought they put into not only the fact that they have a character representing Death, but that Death is a character too, with, like you said, ulterior motives. They really made it into Puss in Boots The Last Wish's own little thing.

He just simply was chilling in the shadows. Since Puss laughs in the face of death, he never noticed Death was always there for every life he died at. A truly outstanding move.
Death was always there. He's fully justified on killing Puss' last life.
This made his appearance more so build up way before the Doctor told him of Death
great catch :)
I want DreamWorks to make a horror animated movie that would be sick
“I’ll just be like ‘yay I’m 18’ and go back to watching the Lego movie” 😂 I have never related to a sentence more in my life 😂💀
I love watching The Lego Movie and I’m like 20 years old
Awesomemay, it’s always a pleasure to see you when you drop out a new video while putting all the hard work in the videos you make. And I love it! ^^
I appreciate that!
if i were a kid i'd be absolutely terrified of a literal personification of Death himself hiding under my bed
This is the kind of movie that I wanna make someday, Something intense and scary, but also fun and engaging.
this movie was so good, and the Shrek soundtrack fading in at the end made me lose it.

Dude this review was amazing!!! I thought this movie was amazing! I was waiting for this video to come out!!!
NORMAN !!! lmaoo i agree with you though more horror in animation would be so good i love the feeling you get its amazing
7:58 Honestly this picture is a perfect representation of her character lmao
I will say that this is definitely my favorite animated movie of 2022, and I've been waiting for what feels like forever until I get to watch it again.
New video! A hi from Portugal, love your channel!
Please do a video about Cartoon Saloon. Their animated movies are absolutely beautiful and deserve so much love
when dream work wants to make a good movie we get a god tier movie
"he looks like if bologna was a person"
I
*I can’t say you’re wrong*
I don’t know what I love the most about this movie
Watching the movie was actually so good, I had many heart felt moments and I would say that this will be the best animated film that represents for adults and kids together
Finally back up :D I had the pleasure of editing some of this video. Hope yall enjoy the video :)
you did such a great job!!!
IM GLAD YOU’RE BACK! HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT BIRTHDAY!
This movie is honestly just incredible! I’ve seen it twice at the cinemas now. I can’t wait for the future of the shrek franchise too. Whenever the 5th mainline movie does eventually come out. Probably by the time Toy Story 5 does… (cough, cough) lol
12:15 that wasn't just what you thought, you know what I thought when I saw the blue flowers? they have SPIKES, you can see the beauty and you can love the smell of the flowers, but once you touch them, you're going to feel "hurt" something I didn't expected coming from Perrito "world", but it makes so much sense coming from him, he doesn't really care about the bad things in the world, that's why he can appreciate the flowers without being hurt by them, something the cats really can't at the first time, and I MEAN IT, just think by yourself like the movie made you think lol | Kitty Softpaws and puss in boots literally didn't trusted each at first, only in the half of the movie she trusted him, just like the flowers that attacked them when they didn't trusted the flowers, I think that world has so much more to offer in terms of character dynamics, is a shame we didn't got to see more
I LOVE your review on the movie, it’s one of my favorite animated movies even though it came out recently, but I agree with you on how awesome it is!
14:23- I HAD MY VOLUME UP, JEEZ DUDE PUT A JUMPSCARE WARNING NEXT TIME-
The blood, the panic attack, the existencial dread of death, the bleeped out cursing from Perrito. Shattering expectations of the audience is what I think makes dreamworks different.
10:10 I think so far this is the only video that talked about this and when I saw it I was shocked
I just got an ad for the puss and boots movie while watching this-
YES! YES! A NEW AWESOMEMAY VIDEO TO WATCH WHILE I EAT TORTELLINI ALONE!!!
The evil whistle is probably inspired by Negan from TWD.
Remember when people wouldn’t stop talking about that?)
It kind of scares me that in like, a year, people will stop talking about this movie.
6:32-6:45, Alright, didn't know he also has some of those
I love this movie so much, it's truly done what other movies could never.
Please don’t tell me you actually looked up Jack Horner on the rule34…
erm....
What do you mean?…🤨
QUICK WATCH IT BEFORE IT GETS TAKEN DOWN!
i hope not!!
