I love how Nebbercracker never appeared in any marketing, so the immediate early assumption was, "Oh, this guy dies and possesses his house", but then the reveals evolve it into a great balance of morbid and heartwarming.
Watching as a kid raised on Scooby-Doo, I never imagined the movie would be so layered.
The scene where he has a heart attack & you have POV shot was honestly horrifying as a kid & to this day it’s burned into my mind.
When you realize it now, he tried to prevent the kids from getting in the house.

Seeing this in my recommended hit me with so much nostalgia- Monster House was such an important film in my childhood

Actually, now that I think about it. It does make some amount of sense on paper since doesn't Nyquil have something in it to make you sleepy, which is why Dayquil is a thing for when you just started your day?
The protagonists, seeing as they are kids and need it in bulk, most likely can't get "professional" sleeping pills / tablets, so they made do with what they *could* get their hands on. Especially since Chowder's father already has a pharmacy with Nyquil out on the shelves.

In a funny way, this film definitely had the vibe that it was intended for adults, similar to what you would get from Regular Show on Cartoon Network as a kid.🤣
That’s because it originally was meant to be like that, it even had swearing & that’s why there’s a lot of subtle sexual jokes in the movie, the scene where Jenny finds the pee bottles in the bedroom chowder originally said “DJ…you piss in bottles?” And they changed it to pee in bottles, if you look chowders lips he still says Piss with his lips.

I really don't think the animation and visuals are all that bad, I find it incredibly charming too. Also I miss when kids movies were scarier lol I couldn't put this movie down as a kid. Family-friendly horror just isn't a thing anymore :/

I have never had a single nightmare in my life except for the ones caused by this movie back when i was around 5 years old which still didn't stop me from watching it a million times growing up
I had a nightmare about this shit too, I was stuck in DJ’s room just watching it, looked down and around at the room for a few seconds, looked back up at the house and the tongue/rug was already outside and breaking down my door, then I forced myself awake when it started coming up the stairs
I really envy that, even though I'm a pretty happy guy most of my dreams are nightmares for some reason 😢
This and Coraline gave me so many nghtmares as a kid, but I would just firm it and rewatch them anyway. And then as an adult when they stopped being scary, they just became really good and nostalgic kid's movies that hold up well.
Everything about this is stellar. The story is a combo of things we’ve seen before, but put together in a sensible way that maximizes both the humor and the horror. The acting, the visuals, everyone just did a really good job.
What you’re referring to is “healing your inner child.” I feel like how you described constantly. I feel like a child still at 22 & cannot let go of these things that made me who I am. I look back & see where I got my personality from these movies & shows. You have to remember, ADULTS, made these things. By god if they’re allowed that childhood wonder then so are you.
You just have to adapt & find out who it is that your child self saw you becoming without losing the things that made you, you.
It hits more with the weather change for me.
I feel like _Monster House_ does a great job in exploring themes of loss, grief, and both holding & moving on from the past really well, particularly with Constance and Horace Nebbercracker’s relationship. I feel like behind all of Constance’s vengeful persona is a (literal) soul consumed with despair and a desire for acceptance-something clearly conveyed when those kids egged the house the night she died. Maybe it’s weird that I’m analyzing the themes of a kids movie, & I doubt anyone’s see this, but those are just my thoughts on it ig.
This was a very good review and I wish you well Nick! Also at the end of the movie the same two cops that got eaten were actually alive and unharmed but just had a quick memory wipe from the events after encountering the Monster House. So not only that Nebelcrakcer was free from grief and fear but also everyone else had bee free from the prison the house made too!
This movie is honestly great. I loved it as a kid and find it surprising more people don't know it. I used it for a film study for a Year 9 class during our horror unit and the kids loved it. Definitely timeless.
I have one sentence for this.
This was the scariest movie I had ever seen from my childhood, it gave me nightmares and it made me extremely afraid of houses with no lights on in the night.

This movie is so important to me. The year it came out i was about 7 and my school took our whole grade to the theatres for our school trip and let me tell you, seeing this movie on the big screen as a kid who loved horror and hearing your classmates screamin was nothing short of a spiritual awakening
I know people hated how it looked but monster house was truly ahead of its time
I remember watching this as a kid and not being able to sleep as there was an old abandoned house next door. Good memories
I appreciate the nuanced takes about this film that id never notice. The phrase "Kill your darlings" as it means to remove the things you love for the sake of a better story feels important here. It isnt why moving on is important- I think many movies/cartoons do that already. Its almost a literal take on what moving can look like and how brutal and freeing it can be.
To this day monster house is still my favourite animated movie of all time, every time I watch it I notice something new or realise that someone in the cast is someone from something else & it’s also the directorial debut and is written by Dan Harmon the co creator of Rick & morty which I only found out when I recently rewatched the movie.
I also love looking at the new reviews for this movie, it’s all parents who don’t want their kids watching anything slightly scary/challenging or even loud. All the reviews are of parents saying it’s too scary for their kids & the loud noises would scare them etc when it came out when i was a kid it’s all anyone could talk about on the playground for a week.
Edit: I also saw for the first time yesterday a post credit scene which I never knew existed of Bones being rejected by Zee and hooks up with Skull instead. Which is fucked up considering they’re band mates in skull and bones lol.
1. When I was a kid this was the scariest movie ever. Honestly, I loved it. Made me cry then, still does now lol. But looking back on it now, it's amazing. The story telling, foreshadowing, the voice acting and the cinematography is really something special. If it wasn't a motion capture movie, it would've been a perfect movie.
2. Rewatching it, I feel as though Zee (the goth girl) was going to play a bigger role. She's set up with an interesting personality, but with no pay off. I feel like she would've gotten loured there, like Bones, but at the last second got away. Feels like a wasted opportunity.
Zee did originally have more scenes but they were too dark to put in the movie I’m pretty sure one of them was her straight up attacking bones for abusing her and it was like her being able to fight back against someone that hurt her which intertwines with nebbercracker and constance and I’m also pretty sure that was the scene where after bones leaves he gets eaten by the house
The mocap animated people in this movie may technically be dated, but I still think the animation for the monster house herself is phenomenal and holds up to this day.
whoa i was never expecting to get such a deep philosophical conclusion from monster house. hell that movie is great!! i remember all the kids around me talking about how scary that movie was and how they were so afraid of it, and it made me really happy to know someone made a scary movie that was appropriate for kids and it wasn't just a silly story (even though it has its very silly moments)
while i thought the animation was kinda rough as a kid, now i think it looks really great. its perfect for the story, if it looked different i dont think the movie would work as well. its a problem you often see with horror anime, sometimes the cute character designs actually make it less scary. i love the art direction of monster house
tbh monster house and coraline f*ckd me up so much when I watched them as a kid (which was also why I rewatched both like 100 times) I still shudder when remembering them, so it's really nice to see someone give this movie the praise it deserves❤
Monster house is THAT movie. I literally brought it to our Halloween party in 2nd grade for us to watch and right into it during the scene with bones and Jenny she immediately said something correlating to it “may not being appropriate enough” for us to watch or something but yea that made me sad the entire day ngl. I’ve watched this movie like repeatedly and every time it’s the best experience my gosh I love this movie, especially when I was younger.

This "kid's film" was scary and more anxiety inducing than most horror films. From Nebbercracker, being a creepy old scary man, from the house eating people at night, Constance' cemented corpse cracking and revealing her skeleton in the bottom of the basement, there's so much scenes that are just damn terrifying.
This movie absolutely has to be inspired by Stephen Kings books, and nothing will change my mind. A trio of kids who have to fight an inanimate object thats been possessed and tries to each children. A grouchy old man who acts as an antagonist whos actually not a bad guy. Set in the 80s. Main protagonist thinks hes more mature than he actually is. All of the adults dont believe the kids. There's even an older bully character who winds up getting "killed" by the monster
i saw this movie in theaters when i was 7 and i was DEFINITELY not a fan of horror back then. i can’t even explain how much it terrified me lmao. my neighborhood had a house covered in vines and this movie made me SO scared of it lol
This movie played a big part in my childhood trauma. It haunted my nightmares. The house and the way that it was animated terrified me. The concept of an entire house having a consciousness and behaving like a living being, being able show signs of life by moving parts of itself while the rest of it remains inanimate or revealing itself to be alive and fully conscious by animating its entire “body” like a living creature, and the inside of the house functioning like the inside of a living being is extremely uncanny and nightmare fuel. This is my personal understanding of why people would be terrified of the concept of inanimate objects such as mannequins, dolls, and animatronics coming to life and having a mind of their own. For me, it’s being terrified at the thought of an entire house coming to life.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time because it shows its subtle with its messages but also has a good balance of horror and comedy. Also the advice at the end was really needed fr fr!!

The Idea of a PG Rated horror movie is genius, i remember watching this as a kid, the suspense and Dark theme mixed with the slapstick like comedy made it a unique experience.

I loved the animation style since it gives kind of a mix of still noticeable 3rd animation, but has almost a texture of clay. Like stop motion movies (I.e. Coraline and others alike). And I haven’t seen a movie like this, it feels completely it’s own and unique.

It's gotta be one of my favorites childhood scary movies, up there with Corpse Bride and Coraline.
The kind of movie that just sticks with you as a fond memory.
When I was a kid, just bored and watching Cartoon Network, this movie would actually come up quite often, I must have watched it 3 or 4 times.
Never got tired of it honestly, it's themes, it's ambience, the atmosphere. It's all just, good.
I will proudly say that this movie scared the heck out of me when I was a kid and for that reason it was my favorite childhood scary movie.

I used to watch this with my younger siblings (+ cousin) ALL the time!! Like every time we visited my cousin, we put Monster House on. My cousin wasn't allowed to watch horror movies, while my siblings and I loved them. So it was like something we could all compromise on, but still be creepy (at least as kids lol)

I watched this movie at a drive-in theater somewhat recently. I recommend drive-in theaters. It's fun watching a movie while sitting in a comfy lawn chair and eating some funnel cake.

My child brain thought everyone the house ate was permanently gone. I watched it again as an adult & theres an after credits scene of bones & the cops climbing out of the basement of the house. Good way to get away with making a kid think they saw someone die on screen but no they're alive in the end

Monster house, I think, is the first, and I know the last indie movie that was treated like an S tier blockbuster film, from the storytelling, music, and animation which I definitely believe it holds up, of course it's nothing like Disney and Pixar animation that have thousands of godly talented animators.
But it's legitimately crazy how the smallest of things in this movie all contribute to the film on a bigger level. And of course, that isn't to say the movie doesn't have its faults, like its biggest one: no one lives in the neighborhood!
I basically grew up watching this movie. This basically is what got me into horror, and more or less inspired me into being a writer and being into film and movies. And years later, coming back and revisiting films thanks to its minor spotlight with reacters, realizing two things that makes this movie great. How well the little things in this movie contribute to the bigger picture, like the music, the music fits so well with some scenes. And second how this film master a small level of macabre horror, there's a certain level of horror on how life like the house is, and how the house has so many human characteristics

This movie terrified me as a kid, I couldn't even bring myself to hit play after putting the disk into the DVD player and sitting on the main menu. Just staring at the house, watching it breathe then sending the carpet at me to scare me. Even after making it through the main menu, I had to pause a few times because I was too scared to continue. Now I wish I could get that fear I once had, this movie is what made me a fan of horror and the outright disturbing creatures of the night.
