I wish I could like this comment multiple times if you are talking about the video from 1969...Fun fact, Mark and Don were 21 and Mel was only 18 in that video.
Guys, Like these hippies are telling you you go deep with this band. They've got some heavy blues songs.Big fat base and percussion. Like the man with excellent taste. G FIRST ALB7M AND LIVE ALBUM .. "Inside looking out" Rock On! Oh ,check on Little Feet.....2 drummers horns, tight band..
That was The Benny Hill theme song! Only 2 bands sold out Shea Stadium in NY. 1st was The Beatles and next was Grand Funk, but GFR did it 3 weeks faster than The Beatles did! Their fans were hopping all over the bleachers and there was serious concern they would collapse, so they called in engineers to see. This is also a great band to watch live.
If you want to be surprised by a 70's rock group, try Uriah Heep. Less known today, despite some members still touring, but huge in the 70's. They only had a couple of chart hits "Stealin' and "Easy Livin", but they were massive on FM Stations with a variety of unusual songs. They had lead singers, but other band members routinely sang and they harmonized. Also try "The Wizard", "July Morning", "Look at Yourself", "Lady in Black" or "Bird of Prey",
My choice for elevated is The Magician's Birthday. ...but my main point for stopping by was to add this little gem: Lee Kerslake was Uriah Heep's drummer until Ozzy hired him to form his band. Lee stayed with Ozzy until he passed several years ago.
This was a HUGE number one hit for Grand Funk Railroad in 1973. Every time it was played at the Fernwood Roller Rink in Peoria, IL 65 kids started skating faster. My childhood was funkier thanks to these guys.
I just want to point out years ago y'all were super impressed with Queensryche (who were heavily influenced by Rush and Iron Maiden) but never came back to them.
Black Sabbath too. Please check out the title song from the debut album, that is widely considered to be the first truly metal song by the first truly metal band!
I don't know what notes you guys are reading but this is actually the drummer Don Brewer who sings this song plus many other great songs by them. Mark Farner the guitarist has a higher pitched voice and the essentially split the lead vocal duties 50/50 between themselves. Both are great singers with distinct and different voices that blend very well together and also rock-out on their own. 🤘🏻 Anyways, you *DEFINITELY* need to go down the Grand Funk Railroad rabbit hole. They have so many great songs: The 10-minute epic "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home," their great cover of The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter," "Walk Like A Man," "Footstompin' Music," their great cover of Little Eva's "The Locomotion" and "Some Kind Of Wonderful" which was a rare example of Don and Mark sharing lead vocals within the same song. I'm telling you guys, you are going to *love* Grand Funk Railroad when you're done checking them out. They are truly a great American band.
Not only did they fill stadiums they sold out Shea Stadium quicker than the Beatles. “By 1971, Grand Funk equaled the Beatles' Shea Stadium attendance record, but sold out the venue in just 72 hours whereas the Beatles concert took a few weeks to sell out.”
@4:24 the song you're thinking about isnthe then song to throw Benny Hill show, a British risqué comedy of the 60's & 70's. It's absolutely classic song put probably millions of vignettes. Y'all should do a react to the best of Benny Hill and have a great laugh
GFR is just a great straight ahead rock band. They should get more love. They were adored by fans & reviled by critics because it was the time of prog & Zeppelin. Other songs: Time Machine, Heartbreaker, Sin's a Good Man's Brother, Footstompin Music, Rock N Roll Soul, Walk Like a Man 🤘🤘
Grand Funk was my first concert at age 14 in 1971. They have been my favorite band from that day on! One thing, on this son drummer Don Brewer was the lead singer and the writer.
I've been serious thinking about this. I'm surprised you guys haven't even done this yet. Whether you agree or disagree with Nugent's political outspokenness, you can't deny that Stranglehold is just on another level.
"We're An American Band" is the rockingest song Grand Funk ever recorded, but if you guys want to hear a completely different side of the band, check out "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home". You will love it!
Being a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist myself, one of the most interesting things to me about this song is that the drummer is singing the lead vocals and playing the drums at the same time. There is a studio video and also a live video of this song and he is playing and singing in both of them. The drummer is Don Brewer. Both him and the lead guitar player wrote this song. Most of the songs for the band are sung by the lead guitar player (Mark Farner) but Don is singing this one. I think he is one of the best singing drummers because you don't see many drummers who can do all those drum rolls while they're singing at the same time. It's bad enough trying to hold down a good study drum beat and still sing lead vocals, but when you can also do all the drum rolls and still sing lead like he's doing here, that's crazy!
If y’all want to get caught off guard by something from the 70s you should really check out some glam bands like Sparks or Roxy music. Queens music from this era is also pretty different. Check out: “This town ain’t big enough for the both of us“- Sparks “Virginia plain“-Roxy music “March of the black queen“-Queen “Death on two legs“-Queen
You HAVE to listen to Inside Looking Out by these guys and it has to be live!!!! They are an amazing talented group!! Please do that one, you won't regret it!!!
One of the sleeper fire songs they have is "Footstompin' Music". They are an institution in Detroit. They were good friends of Bob Seger and the whole Detroit sound of the 70's. Two great singers in the band.
Y'all should do Head East - Never Been any Reason. It's a lot like this song in the "70s party rock song" aspect, but it's actually a much better song too in my opinion. Kinda like Mountain - Mississippi Queen. This one is pretty substance-less, for lack of a better term.
GFR have a ton of bangers. They were yuge from 69-74, releasing eleven albums, including one live and one compilation, during that period. All certified: 5 gold, 4 platinum and two double-platinum. They also had two platinum singles, "We're an American Band" and "Some Kind of Wonderful".
the beatles sold out Shea Stadium in 2 weeks. These 3 guys sold out Shea in 72 hours. The fire marshal almost stopped the concert because the entire stadium was oscillating from the fans jumping up and down in unison during the concert. true story
Glad you guys liked this song. Freddie King is my all time favorite blues guitarist. Y'all should def check him out. He was a contemporary and an influence of Eric Clapton. He was a blues player that had some crossover success with the rock crowd. He was notorious for playing poker with his band and talking back most or all of the money he'd just paid them. Sweet Sweet Connie is a famous groupie from that period.
Great choice guys!!! A Classic!!! And I didn't know the band and Im like damnn, I love this track loll just didn't know the bands name! Keep em coming fam, you guys are killing it like usual‼‼💥💥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Don Brewer the drummer took lead on this song. He's still touring with Mel bass player. Mark Farner tours with his own band Mark Farner's American Band. In the beginning they were only a 3 member band. Eventually added a keyboard. They sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles did. They didn't do hard drugs, only smoke occasionally, they wanted to concentrate on the music, per Mark said in an interview.
One of the first rock groups I listened to, I think I was still in grade school or Jr. High when I first heard this song. You should check out "I'm Your Captain", and "Some Kind of Wonderful."
You guys are the Kings of Reactions...nobody does it like you guys. Genuine responses, always digging deeper into bands discography. Great stuff! My top 5 I would love to hear from you guys... Grand Funk "Some Kinda Wonderful" 2) Faces w/ Rod Stewart "That's All You Need" 3) Van Halen "Outta Love Again" 4) Ratt "Lack of Communication" 5) Black Sabbath "A National Acrobat"
"Inside Looking Out" the live version from '69 may be the best live performance ever published on You Tube. It has to be reviewed...you guys will be amazed...
"You kids don't know Grand Funk? The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drumwork of Don Brewer?" Homer Simpson
I bought the single in 5th grade at a yard sale across the street and I wore it out. And Yeah, within a couple short years I would be in a much more Progressive stuff like Kansas and rush and so forth but really I liked everything. Lynyrd Skynyrd is huge huge huge favorite. Check out Captain my Captain by them. If you want to be at least a little surprised although it's still totally classic rock, check out the ZZ Top song Heard It On The X, which is actually kind of autobiographical for them. It's a total banger.
Grand Funk..alot could argue..they are the appitomy of blues/funk rock n roll. From "Inside looking out " "Heartbreaker" to "Closer to home"-(I'm yer captain) and you've done "Were an American band. Inside Looking Out, the live version! Very funky grooves!
I wish I could like this comment multiple times if you are talking about the video from 1969...Fun fact, Mark and Don were 21 and Mel was only 18 in that video.
It's a great performance and I love watching people react to it.
@@timdavis6091that's what I always think about when I see that video, how young they were. But it doesn't show in their stage presence.
Yes!
The 1969 live version of inside looking out. You will be amazed by their live presence
Mos def!
Absolutely! They gotta react to that!
A must do
You will do yourself a disservice if you don't react to "Inside Looking Out" the live version. One of the best performances out there.
THIS

You have to do this one, it will for sure "catch you off guard"
GFR had two vocalists. This was actually the drummer Donnie Brewer. Awesome job guys!
Big fans of you guys and Grand Funk. If you want Grand Funk to take you to church then play "Some Kind of Wonderful".
That was The Benny Hill theme song! Only 2 bands sold out Shea Stadium in NY. 1st was The Beatles and next was Grand Funk, but GFR did it 3 weeks faster than The Beatles did! it's called "Yakety Sax" and is an old Boots Randolph hit.
“I’m Your Captain” studio version, will take you by surprise. It’s an unexpected opus…
Yes!!!!!
"Some Kind Of Wonderful" extremely soulful. IT'LL BE RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY! Great call!
wish you had done Closer to Home but I'll take it ;)
I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home. Got do'm together.
The drummer is the one singing also. Amazing to be able to sing and keep the beat and not sound out of breath.
If you want to be surprised by a 70's rock group, try Uriah Heep. Less known today, despite some members still touring, but huge in the 70's. Stealin' one of rock's great tunes.
Oh, indeed try a listen of "Wizard".
Especially if you've elevated or otherwise imbued...
My choice for elevated is The Magician's Birthday.
...but my main point for stopping by was to add this little gem: Lee Kerslake was Uriah Heep's drummer until Ozzy hired him to form his band. Lee stayed with Ozzy until he passed several years ago.
They influenced some metal
U F O. (from the 70's) 😮 huh?
This was a HUGE number one hit for Grand Funk Railroad in 1973. Every time it was played at the Fernwood Roller Rink in Peoria, IL 65 kids started skating faster. My childhood was funkier thanks to these guys.
Also from Peoria 🤘🏼
As soon as I saw the title my first thought was hearing this at my local rolling skating rink!
I just want to point out years ago y'all were super impressed with Queensryche (who were heavily influenced by Rush and Iron Maiden) but never came back to them.
Black Sabbath too. Please check out the title song from the debut album, that is widely considered to be the first truly metal song by the first truly metal band!
Yes! Empire was mentioned back when they reacted to Eyes of a Stranger.
I'm Your Captain!
Some Kind Of Wonderful!
GFR does a great version of "Locomotion" too! And still partying like a mug to that!!!
I don't know what notes you guys are reading but this is actually the drummer Don Brewer who sings this song plus many other great songs by them. The Brits had the Stones. Zep, The Who, Beatles, Pink Floyd, in the early 70s. So they were saying? Were an American Band.
Grand Funk is an iconic band that flew under the radar.

They played everywhere in the '70's.

They were my first rock band, and my best.

You nailed GFR when you said “ just a good ass time!” Just a great band. ☮️
This whole album rocks! Love it!
One of the greatest trios ever.
If you want to be caught off guard, then perhaps try Heart - Barracuda.
Perusing through their reactions for Heart, I saw 'Crazy on you'. I'm surprised 'Barracuda' hasn't been done yet. Would love to see this one.
Magic Man is Incredible. Heart is one of my Mom's favorite bands. Heart and Rush. Lol try and figure that one out.
They already did that one
As Mike said, they already reacted to "Barracuda"...
Barracuda isn't even their best song
So goood! "Heartbreaker" LIVE, for sure!

RIP Sweet Connie. I used to party with her in Little Rock. She was a lot of fun to hang out with.
At our house parties in the’70s if you wanted to up the tempo and jump up and boogie, this was the song that we dropped on top of the record stack.
