Grand Funk Railroad is one of the most overlooked bands in Rock history. Their 1970 live album was one of the few truly live albums. To me when they added the keyboard to the band it took the raw edge off. 1970 live album was their master piece. Although they were overlooked by most of the music industry they just kept on rockin' and rolling along while laughing to the bank and back!! Mark has a song Judgment Day Blues made in the 80's which shows he can still rock.
How many Rap groups do you think will be around still rapping at 70 plus years old? Grand Funk Railroad lives!! The 70's rule!!

Adding the keyboards perhaps took the edge off the albums, but it gave them a much fuller sound live. But, remember that Craig played on many of their albums before joining, but he just wasn't credited.

Flight of the Phoenix wouldn’t be the same without Hammond keyboard, for one, imho.

      Of course not.
The original hard raw sound mellowed with the coming of the keyboard. Listen Grand Funk Railroad Live. That's a world of difference. I like Flight of the Phoenix but it's a different sound than what they started out with.
      Great band still.

I thought the addition Craig on the organ filled out their sound. He’s an extremely talented player and they chose well hiring him. He’s been with the Bob Segar band for over 25 years.

it's a much more understandable feeling than being "proud" to be a citizen of a country. If you worked for your citizenship i guess you can be proud of it, but otherwise i much more get the happiness thing. I'm happy to be a German. I like it here. But i havent contributed enough to it, to be proud of my citizenship.

Lynn Goldsmith co-directed this! She did songs under the name "Will Powers" using a voice device to sound like a man. One of her songs was the great "Smile" which Grand Funk's lead singer Mark Farner did the vocals for and which you might want to check out. The video uses primitive digital effects which were groundbreaking at the time.

Released in 1973, and produced by Todd Rundgren! The audio portion of this video, of course, was the actual original recording as produced by Rundgren, himself a longtime singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist with many songs well worth reacting to: "Hello It's Me," "Time Heals," "The Want of a Nail," and "International Feel" to start! Todd was a Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame nominee the last two years! He's also produced albums by Meat Loaf, the New York Dolls, XTC, The Band, Hall & Oates, and many others!

I love your reactions! It triggers my memories of when I first heard most of these songs. The first time is the best! As others have said, Walker hit the nail on the head: it was indeed a cowbell. You’ll still sometimes hear it in rock songs now, but in the 70’s and some of the 80’s is when cowbell was king. Thanks for sharing!

  • @denniseldridge2936
    @denniseldridge2936 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Hey guys, I've just started watching the actual reaction part here and I have a few comments. First you'll notice that they're tuning by ear here. This was waaaay before electronic tuners of any sort, so you'll hear many live recordings of the era with the guitarists tuning up to each other for quite a while. The other thing you'll notice is the drummer tentatively tapping on his mic. This may be because in those days you may well get a jolt of electricity through it, as sound systems weren't so well designed. I know, I've experienced it, with both mics and with guitar amps lol.
And finally, cowbell! You always need more cowbell! (ask your dad where that comes from). Indeed, cowbell was the sound of American rock in the 70s. For this, also see Blue Oyster Cult, which I hope you'll get to see at some point.

Great REACTION video, Walkers a master on the Cube and yes more cowbell! Some other person mentioned Connie from Little Rock doing her act, having the whole show and that's a natural fact. Yes that is true. Mom and Dad I'm pretty confident its not age appropriate for Claire and Walker yet, but Connie was actually in a documentary movie made by another famous groupie Pamela Des Barres called, "I'm With The Band". Connie tells the whole story of her night with Grand Funk at that show.

The band spoofed the name of a rail way that runs through Michigan where they are from called the grand trunk railroad. I'm from Detroit and it runs through there and runs 40 miles north to Flint where they are from. There is a viaduct in Flint that has their band name painted on it that has been there since the 70's. This song was a counter reaction to the british wave of rock bands and I'm proud to be a fellow Michigander to these guys. I think this video was filmed on one of the band members uncles farm there in Michigan. U can't get any more real and raw than this song and video and the band itself.

I believe that sound is Mark's guitar and not a cow bell. Grand Funk was arena rock at it's finest. They played a show at Shea Stadium and the crowd got to jumping and gyrating to the music they had to call in the engineers because they thought the stadium was going to collapse. I mean the whole stadium was vibrating. One of the most under rated American bands of all time.

That's actually how they recorded music in the 1960s and 1970s. No computers. Usually just 8 or 16 track recorders, and the band would play together in the same room. It's amazing to think that so much incredible music was done with such old technology! Of course, it would take months to record and mix an album, but when the result was something like "Dark Side of the Moon," it was worth it.

I have a live cd from 1971 and another that doesn't have the date. The 1969 was their masterpiece. Just my opinion befor the gripers show up nit picking. To me when they added the keyboard it took the edge off. 100 years from now people will be listening to and analyzing their music. Ever notice some of the best Rock groups are the ones that are overlooked or shunned by the music industry. They don't let them stop their music. They just keep on a rockin' Rollin' while laughing all the way to the. bank. Grand Funk lives!!

I know it's hard to take in the lyrics of a song that you're hearing for the first time. You concentrated on the instrumentation, which is mighty fine, and what you saw on the video itself. This song has a lot of truth in it. It's about what happens after a band (well, some bands anyway) has given a concert is a town, any town, and then parties hard. In this song -> "Out on the road for forty days
. Last night in Little Rock, put me in a haze". In other words, it's party time after the show in a hotel -> "A feelin' good, feelin' right and it's Saturday night
. The hotel detective, he was outta sight". Then a person is mentioned -> "Sweet, sweet Connie was doin' her act
. She had the whole show and that's a natural fact". This is Connie Hamzy, the super-groupee. You could write a book about her escapades. Then > "Up all night with Freddie King
. I got to tell you, poker's his thing". Freddie ran illegal poker games in hotel rooms after concerts. And Freddie usually won. Lot's of real people and real happenings in this song. But, the beat is great, isn't it? And please -> More cowbell!

Supposedly, the group was hanging out with some British rockers, and a dispute arose about which country rocked harder, or something, so drummer Don Brewer came up with the band's best single. Todd Rundgren produced.

Next you *gotta* give the producer on this one a listen - Todd Rundgren is a musical powerhouse in his own right. "Hello It's Me" and "Couldn't I Just Tell You" off Something/Anything have similar pre-song goofiness to this video. If I had to pick a favorite (with literally hundreds to choose from, I'm not sure I can) it'd be the "Baby Let's Swing" medley. "We Gotta Get You a Woman," "Real Man," "Can't Stop Running," "Parallel Lines" and "Second Wind" are all fantastic songs as well, and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface.

Love the new cans! - better bottom end and isolation I bet. GFR Caught in the Act, was one of my first albums when I was 10. I had cool adults in my life too, whom turned me on to sooo much good music, of all genres. So grateful, music has been my life ever since. Also great to see both of you discovering those little bits of ear candy and grooves. Mental note: don't challenge Walker to a Rubiks contest.... I notice Claire seems to really like the Hammond B3 kinda keyboard sound, and Walker looks like his brain is doing massive calculations when there is some great guitar or drum ,work going on... Fender Bass.... a constant in music.... basically the standard against which all others compare.

  • @Penddraig7

Haha, you have to love a silly walk, especially if there is a group of you all doing it at the same time.
We do it in the UK too.
If you want to see a British group who are known for their crazy silly music videos, there is an 80’s group called Madness and they goof off in their videos and doing silly walks and dances is kind of their thing.
Also none music related but still worth a look at is Monty Python doing the ministry of silly walks sketch, I have fond memories as a kid with my mates at school, copying it and trying to do our own silly walks to see who could come up with the best, lol, argh the good old days, I miss them days.
I think we all need to give up this year as a bad one, all calm down, stick two fingers up to it and just be silly, put a smile back on peoples faces, just walk away doing our best silly walks, get some perspective back in our lives.
In fact I challenge Claire and Walker and the old timers to do a video of you all doing silly walks and dances and post it on your channel, let’s see if we can start a challenge trend of nominating people to do a silly walk and dance and post it on their social media
