The bar gets crowded later on and Ludwig can't find his pint anywhere. After the barman begins clearing glasses from the tables, Ludwig sees his pint close by, "Aahhh... you were by my side, all along. My brew mentor... my guiding Bud Light."
When he covers the beast side with his sword, to show the human side of his face is so indicative of where this fight is about to go. There is no longer a beast, but the warrior we've heard tales about, Ludwig.
And in the game this reflects too, phase 1 is weak to serrated weapons (they do more damage to beasts) while phase 2 isn't (he "isn't" no longer a beast)

Fun fact, once the second phase starts, Ludwig stops receiving bonus damage from serggeted weapons. The game itself is saying, "You no longer fight a beast. Now, you face a man."

@@williamhankel8209 Naw. The Moonlight Sword def wanted him to die an honorable death. He was already fighting and trying to kill you, why not use the sword from the start?
This scene means so much to me because it's a masterpiece in character design. He looks so disgusting and terrifying but they mange to convey so much emotion with it, like in the second cutscene, as he falls you can see the hope disappearing from his face as he gives up the will to fight, but when the green light hits his face you can see the great swordsman return, this monster suddenly becomes more human In this moment. And the way his design is made to look good on all fours and standing up is perfect, it's intimidating but holds a stance and attacks that looked as if they were developed after years of fighting, unlike the beast flailing around with no cohesive attacks this man fights with skill. Even his voice, in the first phase he was loudly screaming and screeching while in the holy sword state he is grunting like a human. In my eyes he is no longer fighting to win, he is fighting to show that he is still in there and that he wants to go out as a warrior of the sword, moving on with his master to the end. Sorry this was so long I just love this fight.

Also the Twin Princes's has terrible loops where it's clear when it actually loops. Still not the biggest fan of the second phase of the Abyss Watchers track, it loses all its momentum after such an amazing transition part.
The concept of this boss going from pathetically disgusting to heroically majestic at the halfway point gave me so many chills. When I saw him regain his sanity I was so overwhelmed by goosebumps that I lost just from sheer lack of self-control.
I was not expecting manly tears when this fight started. That I'd remember this thing as 'noble'. From hellish horror to some kind of tragically heroic centaur knight... that I helped die as himself.

Ludwig is easily my favourite. Imagine being such a strong-willed badass that you're able to overcome a virus that turned you into a deformed centaur monster and regain your humanity to have one final fight and die honourably?
it's not a virus, it's a curse from the eldritch gods that was transferred through the healing blood injections everyone keep taking in Yharnam, and if you notice Ludwig's Guidance Rune, it increases the user's Rally Potential, and that Ludwig's penchant for frontline combat meaning showering in beast blood all the time on top of the Guidance Rune, his extreme transformation is not unbelievable

It's interesting how the Moonlight in previous games was seen as a cleansing light that wards off dark and is the antithesis of evil. Yet, in Bloodborne the moon is synonymous with evil and the great ones, which sort of reverses it's role. Instead of being a regular holy sword, it's a sword described as being holy, but seems connected to a major source of evil in the game.

My favorite part of this fight, is how Ludwigs beast form looks like his humanity is still there, transformed, but the human side is hanging on as much as it can. Then the moonlit sword gives that humanity a fighting chance. A man turned beast, standing upright and becoming a beast of a man. It's perfect!

The best part about the Holy Blade is that it feels almost like a reward for defeating his first phase; you’ve beaten him in his beast form, and now you’re rewarded with an epic, full-on absolute blast of a battle between two god tier hunters.
I'd most definitely classify Bloodborne as being in the horror rpg genre, which sadly never took off and hadnt seen an addition to said genre really since the ps2 age with, I think, Shadow Hearts.
I would absolutely classify Bloodborne under a horror genre. aside from the aspects of cosmic horror inspired by Lovecraft (which are arguably the most unsettling), some of the body horror in this game is *beyond* grotesque. many of these designs are absolutely disgusting, I mean for the love of god, Ludwig has a second head which is a mouth comprised of a few teeth, and endless rows of eyeballs descending into the throat. that’s horrific.
@Sakunta Dharma I disagree. The Cleric beast was most likely a church hunter that served under Ludwig given the item he dropped, therefore one must beat the cleric beast with pretty much any weapon of the healing church such as the Holy Blade or Kirkhammer to do this challenge and succeed.
+Julius Tapert system sellers are definitely a thing. and nobody is saying that the system seller is the only thing you'll play but it's the primary reason. I got a ps4 "Only" for Bloodborne. I play other games on ps4 but bloodborne is the reason I got a ps4. 100% worth it and I would do it again
The lyrics of the ost are being sung from the perspective of the moonlight greatsword. Based on its choice of words, It revealed itself to him again in his final moments not to make it harder for you but out of respect for Ludwig. It wants you to put him down as a warrior and not as a beast. This is also where it takes its opprtunity to demonstrate its power to you and make you go "I want that"
Is it just me, or is the second phase actually easier? He acts a lot less aggressively, then, at least for me. Kinda the opposite of the Orphan of Kos or Gascoigne.
Furious George I felt the same way. I also felt that Martyr Logarius was easier in his second phase, because at least he didn't summon the fucking skulls -_- At least Ludwig, Martyr and Kos were great bossfights, unlike Micolash Cage and his Call Beyond bullshit
Man, FUCK MICOLASH, seriously, fuck him. His fight, the Witches of Hemwick, and Rom have to be my most hated boss fights in the game. Most others are awesome, but those three are just the holy trinity of boredom.
it is more of a show than a challenge. It's like rewarding you for pulling off phase 1 and survive into phase 2. Instead become more feral, he regains his humanity and fights you with stances of human, not a beast. Same goes for Laurence, to be honest. His legless phase 3 is more of a show of his misery to make us feel pity for him. It is easier than his phase 1
For someone who has never played Bloodborne, (tho i have played Darksouls 1 and 3) i thought i was just going to see a grotesque monster get killed, but when that second phase hit and that music dropped I was in awe. From Software always amazes me with their boss designs
Definitely one of my all time favorite Bosses ever. The phase transition cutscene is truly inspiring to me because Ludwig is in his lowliest state and then he picks himself up and regains part of his humanity to fight his final duel with a fellow hunter not as a beast, but as a man. It inspires me whenever I feel down and out to try and pick myself up and keep going to better myself. "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. When you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you"
the fact that in his 2nd phase u dont make "bonus damage to beasts" anymore since the game sees him no longer as such ... hands down my fav boss of the soulsborne series
To me, the best boss fight in video game history. I was underleveled in NG+ and it was like hitting a brick wall. But I had to defeat him. No other encounter in my years of playing video games has given me the sense of pure, visceral life and death combat like this one. The music and amazing visual design doesn't hurt. I will forever remember my battle with Ludwig.
I am back to Bloodborne myself it's just the atmosphere of this game and cosmic horror, the architecture of Yharnam is too good. I also enjoyed Demon Souls but I hated certain mechanics like human and ghost form, plus having balancing this stupid World Tendency.
I like bloodborne a lot better then elden ring but I think the godskin apostles OST sounds pretty similar to Ludwig but in a good way. Not that it’s the same melody but the feeling is kind of the same with the rhythm and beat drop.
"My true mentor.... my guiding moonlight." It's almost as if the one thing that made him a beast (the lust for blood and killing with his sword) actually made him feel human again one last time. Shit is crazy when you actually think about it
I remember when i fought him, honestly i believe this is the best boss from software ever made, the whole lore about this boss is truly amazing and i legit felt bad defeating him
One of the best fights in the game, thematically speaking. Being one of the most hideous examples of someone mutated by the Old Blood, Ludwig looks like he lives in constant agony. It is only through the cleansing power of the Hunter's fury that Ludwig is awakened, and given a final chance to die as the man he was rather than the monster he became. In this way, you save Ludwig and release him from his pain.
I swear I'd love to forget everything about this game so I can replay it like the first time. God this fight... The music, the design of Ludwig, the way he recovers his humanity in the second phase... Sometimes I let myself die in the fight so I can enjoy it again because its so epic xDD
Ludwig walks into a bar, bartender says "What the fuck is that, holy fucking shit what are you, stay the fuck away, jesus fucking christ holy shit god in heaven please help me god im sorry holy fucking shit what is this fucking thing"
From a beast who attacks without pattern, he then starts fighting you like a sword master. From walking on all limbs, he got up, that ragged clothing on his back now serve as a cloak, giving a resemblance to a cavalry knight. He's also no longer weak to fire, meaning he's no longer a beast, you are fighting with a man. Lastly, Ludwig Van Beethoven composed the Moonlight Sonata, and look what we have here. I have never seen a boss fight more poetic.
You know, Ludwig has 2 sides on his face. His right side is messed up, his right eye is blank, completely beast-like. His left side, however, can only be seen with the Holy Moonlight Sword's light (2:20). That side seems more human, as you can see a human face there. At 3:00, Ludwig hides the right side of his face, his beast side. Now, you're not duelling with the beast that Ludwig became, but the human legend he used to be. Also, his name changes from Ludwig the Accursed, from the first phase, to Ludwig the Holy Blade, on the second phase
Ah. Ludwig. The most painfully awesome experience of my life. And the cutscenes add. And I'm impressed (but mainly me being l a scrublord) at how you accomplished victory in one try.
He probably didn't. Either he had a sepertate character to try out the boss or he managed to manually saved his save. I mean, he knew exactly what to do against most of the attacks without having seen them before. No one can be this good.

Ive been stuck on this boss since the DLC came out. I took a small break and beat both Dark Souls 1 and 3 before beating this boss. The hardest boss battle i've ever come across and you make it look easy... Also i refuse to summon people, it goes against my manly pride xD
It's not that he makes it look easy, he had a lot of HP and good resistance. You can see he made many mistakes. That being said, this boss and the Orphan were probably the toughest in Bloodborne.
I know it's an old post, but damn...Manus and Kalameet (DS1) are a lot harder than all Bloodborne bosses together. And don't even let me mention Raime the Fume Knight (DS2).
Meh... Not for me. Bloodborne in general is easier compared to Dark Souls; stamina depletes too slowly, you move too quickly, blood vials can be used instantly ecc. Overall, is an user-friendly game. Ludwig is hard, for sure, but still a Bloodborne boss.
Him covering up the more transformed side of his face with his sword and only showing his more human side is such good use of visuals to represent him regaining some of his humanity and returning somewhat from beasthood. Fromsoft are true artists when it comes to video games.
I don't much like the fromsoft games as much as every other human on the planet, but one thing I can't take away from it is how incredible the soundtracks are.

Tim Jansson You fools who don't understand the tragic implications of this moment to the lore and the story of Yharnam as a whole, of course, this would be just a glowing sword. Begone! Non-fedora-wearing version: We see this pathetic monster recover its humanity and become the hunter Ludwig once again, so Djura was right, "Those you hunt are not beasts, they're people... in time you'll come to understand." Plus, not being a Souls player myself, as I understand it, the Moonlight Greatsword this dude uses is kind of a recurring thing in the series and there was that hype for it when it showed up in this. Kinda like Patches, who's also a recurring jackass in the Souls series.

I like how at the beginning he just whips out the sword like
"Welp, here we go"
Every boss in this game is a walking abortion. He's used it to by now.
Not like the hunter can leave

It's an incredible game, worth getting a ps4 just for it.

Agreed. It shouldn't be restricted to one platform
+StormOfSwords27
Then how do you roll if you can only use WASD or Arrow keys
The way he stands with pride again after getting the sword. Goosebumps.
The lyrics of the ost are being sung from the perspective of the moonlight greatsword. Based on its choice of words, It revealed itself to him again in his final moments not to make it harder for you but out of respect for Ludwig. It wants you to put him down as a warrior and not as a beast. This is also where it takes its opprtunity to demonstrate its power to you and make you go "I want that"
The swords a pick-me lmao
venator, predator!
Is it just me, or is the second phase actually easier? He acts a lot less aggressively, then, at least for me. Kinda the opposite of the Orphan of Kos or Gascoigne.
Furious George I felt the same way. I also felt that Martyr Logarius was easier in his second phase, because at least he didn't summon the fucking skulls -_-
At least Ludwig, Martyr and Kos were great bossfights, unlike Micolash Cage and his Call Beyond bullshit
Man, FUCK MICOLASH, seriously, fuck him. His fight, the Witches of Hemwick, and Rom have to be my most hated boss fights in the game. Most others are awesome, but those three are just the holy trinity of boredom.
Furious George maybe since he regained his humanity he fought the way he truly wanted to be
it is more of a show than a challenge.
It is easier, however the 2nd phase attacks deal WAAAAAYYYYY more damage. Even Ludwigs basic attacks are intense.
Fact about ludwig in the intro he has his moonlight sword on his back and it professionally falls off in the lung he does
Poor Ludwig. So sad to see him like this.
Yeah, it's like Artorias but actually tragic and not over inflated by fans.

Ludwig the accursed is the best prime example of a disgusting yet awesome and powerful boss
When you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you"
Jesus christ the music is absolutely amazing in this fight.
new favorite boss theme
always now?
The more I fight him the better he becomes.
Is this horse gonna be available in Red Dead Redemption 2 ?

That would be on full rampage against players in lobby

To me, the best boss fight in video game history. I was underleveled in NG+ and it was like hitting a brick wall. But I had to defeat him. No other encounter in my years of playing video games has given me the sense of pure, visceral life and death combat like this one. The music and amazing visual design doesn't hurt. I will forever remember my battle with Ludwig.
So far nothing in Elden Ring has still managed to top this in either presentation or OST. Love Ludwig so damn much
Really? Maliketh and malenia quite nice

SMOUGH
I've literally never once played Bloodborne (no playstation) and yet all the boss fights give me chills. This one specifically
I like how the soulsborne games are scarier than most horror games.
"My true mentor.... my guiding moonlight." It's almost as if the one thing that made him a beast (the lust for blood and killing with his sword) actually made him feel human again one last time. Shit is crazy when you actually think about it
This boss really puts the "silent hill meets dark souls" into perspective
The first phase at least
I'm glad the horse from Berserk got some extra work.
I remember when i fought him, honestly i believe this is the best boss from software ever made, the whole lore about this boss is truly amazing and i legit felt bad defeating him
Who else just remembered this existed? Nostalgia hits hard man.
The animation on the eye during the cutscene is brilliant. It tells an entire story in a few seconds.
The fight is best when the music aligns perfectly with each attack and the player and ludwig's fighting performance.
I immediately came to rewatch this after fighting Godrick. Both fights have to have been conceived by the same mind.
Music sounds similar in some parts
1:11 RIP skinned narrator dude
One of the best fights in the game, thematically speaking. Being one of the most hideous examples of someone mutated by the Old Blood, Ludwig looks like he lives in constant agony. It is only through the cleansing power of the Hunter's fury that Ludwig is awakened, and given a final chance to die as the man he was rather than the monster he became. In this way, you save Ludwig and release him from his pain.
this game is an absolute masterpiece

Like Boss shh. Don't ruin this with cringey when comments.
One of few boss fights that’s so amazing a part of you doesn’t want to defeat him
So true.
Like Gael for me, it's a tough but fair boss fight that hypes you up and makes you wish it never ends.
The sound design of this boss is absolutely remarkable.
Ludwig is one of my favorite soulsborne bosses it's his character design that I like
Horses?
3:30 I love that part of the music
You mean: 3:46
From a beast who attacks without pattern, he then starts fighting you like a sword master.
From walking on all limbs, he got up, that ragged clothing on his back now serve as a cloak, giving a resemblance to a cavalry knight.
He's also no longer weak to fire, meaning he's no longer a beast, you are fighting with a man.
Lastly, Ludwig Van Beethoven composed the Moonlight Sonata, and look what we have here.
I have never seen a boss fight more poetic.
Maybe the best boss ever created. Sure Gael, Nameless, and damn Isshin are fantastic, but this is a work of art.
Gael and Isshin are also a work of art
Isshin is definitely a gloc- I mean work of art.
I just realized that the moonlight sword is on his back the whole time until the second phase.
Hands down best boss fight. Story progression mid fight, and so significant at that, and then that music kicks in...
I accidentally did it when I first got old hunters

Opening cinematic for Ludwig is just how I look like waking up for school.
Ludwig...I platinumed the game and he was the one boss that I couldn’t beat, I seriously *couldn’t beat* on my own.
I feel you, but in my case laurence was pain in the ass..... from 1st phase to 2nd that thing was a literal beast I tell u.
Yeah, the Orphan is the hardest but in my all of the soulsborne games ive played Darkeater Midir was the hardest ive ever thought.
I know it's an old post, but damn...Manus and Kalameet (DS1) are a lot harder than all Bloodborne bosses together. And don't even let me mention Raime the Fume Knight (DS2).
Manus and kalameet are a joke compared to Ludwig they're way easier
Meh...
I don't much like the fromsoft games as much as every other human on the planet, but one thing I can't take away from it is how incredible the soundtracks are.

first few minutes - pathetic
1:40 in - kind of cool
mid way point - really cool cutscene
rest of the fight - this is probably the best boss I have ever seen
Matthew Wells so all it takes to impress you is a glowing sword?
That and the fight is FUCKING TOUGH, one of the most exhilarating and invigorating in video games in general, ever.
not just dark souls but in other games fromsoftware made like the armor core series
cybrid joe The Armored Core lore is a mixed bag. Saying it is straight foward at all is odd. I mean the first games of the series are being questioned which timeline it should take place as it make no sense to be before the time of Armored Core 4 as it takes place in the future. And Armored Core 4 takes place somewhere in the 21st century(21st being 2010 and later I don't know why this existed)
