Won an iPhone from a US company after participating in their project last year. When it arrived in India, I was asked to pay 73,000 for the custom duties. Returned! #sadlife. The fact that we Indians are paying a huge price for the development of the country seems unethical.

I know this...just because an e-commerce company is abusing the idea of gift sending, it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be allowed to common man. Our country is absolutely fcked up and the law and order is 0. Sab pause lootne baithey hai!!!
Whenever you send any package out of your country, even if its a small package you have to make an invoice/sample invoice mentioning address of sender and address where you are sending HNS code you can google it or you can mention it in the invoice that it is just a gift and 2nd hand phone in invoice you have to mention the weight of the product and you can put minimum amount like 10 USD. This is the basic custom rule. Make sure when you book any courier company you mail the the invoice alone with AWB number and mention them that the product has zero value as it is 2nd hand and you are sending it as a gift CC it to the courier company custom as well.
The point of the matter is that customs could be a seamless experience and have more transparency among its units and between the courier services. Many courier services have limited their services to our country because of this very reason. Everyday customs siezes alot of such goods are later auctioned as per law and then the company's whom most the commentators are defending "The indian sellers" are still at loss. The problem is not the people trying to get a better deal but the government body and it's behemoth machinery which fails to provide a fair price to consumers.

I can feel the same , My drums from Germany to India charged me a customs of 90 K for the Value of 5 lakhs. You could have been easily got off these charges, If you had your own IEC CODE. the fine plus the customs charges would have been drastically reduced.

My personal experience: I have many relatives in US and Canada. Whenever my uncle from US sends me a physical mail ( he’s old school, prefers physical mail instead of email) it took a lot of time like >1month (probably because it was ordinary mail) and most of the time we get it opened and tampered ( guess post office workers think people send money or something of value in mails). Everything you said in the video might be shocking to you but it’s near normal rather yours was a better experience.
Please check products on amazon.in and flipkart, many unbranded products are from China, the same that is sold on Aliexpress. So when a individual in India is buying it using gift option, customs says its illegal. But when a import license holder is importing it into India undervaluing it and bribing for it using the same customs office then its not illegal. This is why I support Aliexpress. It is transaction between a ordinary Indian buyer and ordinary Chinese seller.
Something like this happened with me also when i won a giveaway on Instagram where they were giving away football shirts. They said the winners will not have to pay any charges on custom cuz they were shipping it worldwide from UK. But when the delivery man called to pickup the parcel he said i have to pay 4000 RS for custom charges, i didnt accepted the parcel and emailed them about the custom charges and they told me not to pay any charges and they gonna look into this matter. After emailing and replying for about 5 months finally i got my parcel free of charge.
Don't know why custom import duty is very high for individual in India. If you are purchasing any electronics and it cost below INR 2000 then it's free else be read to pay 51-70% custom duty on that product or else pay the 5000(they may ask for more in my case that attendant asked me to pay 5k) black money to them they will clear it on the spot. If you refused they will ask to pay the penalty which more than 50% of the product value. You have choice either you can take it or raise dispute and just tell them to return the product once the seller get's it it will refund the amount. It may take more than 3-4 months in this process.

The same thing happened with me. I was to receive a parcel full of snacks from the US which was shipped through FedEx and was marked as a gift. After numerous emails FedEx asked me to pay $40 as customs. I was surprised as I had to pay a huge customs fee...I politely declined to pay this fee and then asked FedEx to enjoy those snacks on behalf of me.(PS:Fedex told that they had paid the customs fee on my behalf and I had to pay them). I think they had the most expensive snack items of their lives.

I am not sure why you presumed that sending Mobile phones from anywhere to India is at some extent same as sending US to CA. The gift option you chose is limited to articles worth 10K only otherwise it doesn't qualify as gift and attracts same duty as for sale goods. The customs duty is charged not only on the invoice value but on invoice value + shipping fees. The current rate of tax is somewhere around 48~55%. The GST you got charged wasn't on the articles you imported but on the customs fees that it attracted. For example your customs duties were 1000 then you will pay 1180 including GST. FedEx and other private carriers charge you a service charge for clearing your items through customs and pay any fees on your behalf which later will be collected from you. GST is also charged on those service charges. If you have had imported this using USPS, someone would have to go to customs office, submit all required documents and pay due fees, only then it could have been released. All this is mentioned on USPS, IndiaPost and CBIC website.
Always use postal service like USPS. You would have been charged shipping + customs. FedEx UPS DHL all are making money by extra charges only 2200 customs amount goes to government of India rest to courier companies.

Bro I am working with Indian customs at IGI airport please do not send any electronic items here in India through mail/courier/cargo because here customs are really strict about the revenue and if there is any discrepancy found it will take many days to clear the item from customs. And customs will charge warehousing, penalty/fine, Duty charge and gst on the receiver of the product.
Just imagine every relative in abroad sending each and every electronic goods in form of gift. How will India collect taxes and survive. Why does it pinch so much for NRIs to pay Indian tax

I once sent some baby clothes that were worth 250 NZD and ended up paying 230NZD as custom charges. They are absolutely useless. A free international delivery was too good to be true, it happens only in India.
Looks like you got charged the standard 42.08% in Customs and IGST (ignoring the warehouse, fine, and Duty Advancement Charge). To be honest, it is supposed to be about 77% for gifts but I called Delhi Customs and apparently they charge the 42.08% rate for every item delivered personally. My guess is that the 77% is charged to curb transactions from Chinese e-Commerce platforms directly which are often marked as gifts. In short, don't import anything from anywhere to India, no matter what the cost.

The main reason is US-India Trade War. America itself first imposed Tariffs and charge on Indian products going in USA, It was only then that the govt increased tariffs on US made products. It was all Political and Economic decision. But as a common person, In the end, It only hurts a common man.

Customs charges 38.5% duty on the value of the product. Rest are charged by your delivery partner.

Bro I am working with Indian customs at IGI airport please do not send any electronic items here in India through mail/courier/cargo because here customs are really strict about the revenue and if there is any discrepancy found it will take many days to clear the item from customs.
And customs will charge warehousing, penalty/fine, Duty charge and gst on the receiver of the product.

Looks like you got charged the standard 42.08% in Customs and IGST (ignoring the warehouse, fine, and Duty Advancement Charge). To be honest, it is supposed to be about 77% for gifts but I called Delhi Customs and apparently they charge the 42.08% rate for every item delivered personally. My guess is that the 77% is charged to curb transactions from Chinese e-Commerce platforms directly which are often marked as gifts.
In short, don't import anything from anywhere to India, no matter what the cost.
