    Cool video, good channel in general. I'm wondering your thoughts on a specific question. Is it not bad opsec to have the apps have any historical connection at all? Which is impossible when the software comes baked with these defaults in place. I think it's important to make the distinction that these security config changes should always be done before signing into apps and personalizing the phone. You mention you delete your unused apps every 3 months, but why, if the companies had you for the 3 months, don't they already have you now? They already have all your personal info. Uninstalling and changing settings doesn't delete what they already harvested. You may be stopping to continue sending your telemetry and data to them by uninstalling, but at the end of the day I think there's a fundamental flaw with how privacy is design into our software still, and making these changes is more like mental peace of mind and theater, rather than actual privacy, security, and good opsec. I think it's a whole topic on it's own tbh - what are the measurable actual benefits to changing these configs when 99% of people already gave all their info away through all the defaults, from google, samsung, and icloud sign-ins, to location services (so, they'll already know where you work and live, even after you turn the setting off), and so much more. It's a risk to make people think they are safe tbh. Great video and would love to see your expertise talk about this point some day.

      Any new devices you log into your iCloud won't know the decryption key and won't be able to access your encrypted cloud data until you enter the 28-character recovery key. You have to backup the recovery key manually, but NOT on your phone (and NOT in iCloud), because you are going to need it if your phone gets lost/stolen, so keep it somewhere safe, maybe written down somewhere, or you can just use a recovery contact. Even without ADP enabled, your cloud data is already encrypted. The only difference is that with ADP disabled, Apple stores your decryption key, but with ADP enabled, YOU store the decryption key, so not even Apple have access to it. That's why the key isn't stored in iCloud.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’re encrypting the data with your own keys that they don’t have access to. That’s the big difference. It doesn’t matter who the owner of the company is in that case, but as for going out of business - that true of any internet company, I guess. Calculated risk.

    The only people who need to use advanced data protection are people at risk of being individually targeted by other people, organisations, or governments/nation states. It’s overkill for the average person, and puts regular people at risk of losing access to their important files and precious memories, because if they lose that one recovery key, they lose everything!

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I respectfully disagree. We need to learn to be in control of our own data, and Apple gives us a fairly risk-limited way to do this. Adding a recovery contact and backup codes mean that it would be pretty difficult to get locked out.

      He’s presumably in the US, where most people are Apple users. Also, with so many different manufacturers changing settings on Androids, it’s difficult to make a video that is as simple as one for Apple, since different settings are likely in different locations, not universally defaulting to the same settings, etc.
      Also, he could just be an iPhone user that doesn’t know that much about Android 😂🤷‍♂️
