    I enjoyed this video just the sincerity of it . I have been a professional for over 35 years and do many log cabins but still enjoy just seeing the work being accomplished

    I appreciate this video!! What did you use for a sander? I am about to get started on my cabin and realize I need to sand before I stain.

    I'm glad the arbor brush worked . I would have treated the wood to get rid of blotchy black spots before staining. I do about 5 log homes a year 🙂

      I actually like the contrast with the darker spots in the logs. I think it gives it a more natural look rather than it all being the stain color, but that's just me. 5 log homes a year? I take it that is your business? I'm getting ready to power wash and restain the whole house later this month.

    Great video thank you could you provide me a link to the sanding brush you used for the angle grinder? Please and thank you. We have a large home staining project ahead of us.

      That brush was an Osborn brush, specially made for log home maintenance. To quote the company, "Made with heat-stabilized nylon filaments impregnated with silicon carbide". They come in a few different shapes and sizes, and generally require the use of a variable-speed angle grinder. An ordinary grinder runs far, far too fast. I run mine at about 800 rpm, although Osborn recommends 1800 rpm.

    Hello J.T.! Beautiful Work! I stripped 1/2 of our south-facing logs w/ a palm sander last fall! Nutso! -Not doing that again.... So I'm wondering, is that an Osborne brush you used? They're pricier than knock-offs, so I'm wondering if one Osborne got you through, or if you bought 2 or more for the whole project? Thanks for any info you can share. Kind Regards from Upstate NY!

      Thanks! Yeh it was an Osborne brush and no it took me I think 4 or 5 brushes for the whole house. But I was using them to completely strip the wood which probably isn't the best tool for the job but I didn't want to risk using a disc on the sander and strip too much wood. In the end it worked great for me and the condition of the logs.

    Love the way the stain came out! Something darker would've been really cool

      Yeh the logs were originally a darker shade but I wanted it a little lighter. I really like the way it comes out with this color stain though with the darker spots in the logs.

    Awesome man. I'd probably rent a cabin and never buy and own one. I'm sure theirs lots of realtors that sell them, and plenty of landlords that will rent to you.

    Is there any special clear coat you used? How do you know if the logs should be stripped or just re stained?

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  ปีที่แล้ว

      Used this for the clear coat: www.weatherall.com/products/uv-guard-advance-clear-wood-finish
      I only stripped the once for the initial staining because the previous owners hadn't taken care of it and it had sat for too long. Since I sanded and stained, I have done a couple maintenance stainings. For those I just pressure wash the logs and do a new coat of stain and clear coat. Do that every 3 years.

    How's that sprayer holding up? I need one but I'm afraid to pick up a cheap harbor freight special...

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Surprisingly pretty well. I just make sure I clean it thoroughly each time I use it. I did get the service plan for it so I could return it if anything happens. Did that with the first one because it stopped spraying but the second one has been great for the past few years.

    How long did this take?

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Takes between 3-4 days per wall between sanding, staining two coats then a clear coat. But that's only working on it for 4-5 hours maybe. Seems like each time I work on the house its the hottest days of the month.

    Great job, but i am a bit disappointed in your choice of mask you used…N99 or P100 should’ve been the way to go…or at the very least N95 abit more comfortable than the N99…other than that…great video.

    do you have to sand a log/wood cabin everytime to stain or not and is it the only method for maintenance?

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you don't. I only did this because it had been neglected for so long and wanted to get it back to bare wood and start fresh. Now all that has to be done is a good pressure wash and re-stain every few years.

    • @EBMproductions1

      @@TheGreatVenture thank you cause i'm moving end of Feb and the wood cabin i'm moving to has some leaks etc. and i was wondering how to stop any or all leaking and how to structurally improve the wood? the foundation is also done wrong so i'm gonna collect rocks on the weekends and use clay/cement to put the cement and stone around the pillars of the foundation and maybe even fill the entire foundation with it to stop any or all rain from getting underneath the house.

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Erik Britz for the leaks check the caulking between the logs to make sure it isn't cracked or have gaps. If you haven't already definitely look for a good log home company to check for log rot.
      Also look at window framing. We had leaks in this house and it ended up coming from the wooden window frames upstairs that had warped. Good luck to you and your move.

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends how big they are and if they are upward facing or not. Between the logs does need to be caulked to prevent water, dirt and bugs from getting deep into between the logs.

    How many days to wire grind that cabin?

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too many. About 2-3 days of sanding each side then another couple days for staining and clear coat. So about a week per side, but that wasn't full 8 hour days mind you. If I really buckled down I could have sanded each side probably in a day, two for the bigger sides.
      Just glad I don't have to sand it down to bare wood again. Now its just keeping up with a good maintenance schedule of power washing and stain.

  • @покатак-щ5н
    @покатак-щ5н 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    hello! I first sand, then remove the dust, then I make an antiseptic for wood, and 2 layers of oil or paint, I apply with a brush! both a log and a board! I in Russia earn for 1 square meter of turnkey work, my consumables and tools, the customer buys only paint and sealant and antiseptic! his material and I take $ 10 per square for the whole complex. How much does this work cost you? I pay the workers $ 7 for work per 1 square meter !!! I will be grateful if you answer !!!

    • @TheGreatVenture
      @TheGreatVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well since I am doing this myself I only have to pay for the materials. a 5 gallon bucket of stain is $254.95 and a 5 gallon bucket of the clear coat is $292.90. If I was to just do maintenance staining I could probably get by with two buckets of stain if I did two coats and one bucket of clear coat would be fine.
      Save a ton by doing it myself, just time consuming. I enjoy it though.
