Good information provided. My husband and I are looking at buying a log cabin in New Mexico and some of our/my questions were answered here. I'll end up watching all your videos for more info.

how long will one repair chinking last? is it good for 3 or so years, or is this a yearly thing? and what is the average log home inspection cost?

😢 just bought a log home. Feel like I got screwed bad. My forever home is turning into a nightmare. I feel like the agent, owner and inspector all knew. Devastated. I need blasting, staining log repair, new windows, roof, gutters and more. There's water damage. Sad time for my husband and I ....wish I would have had you to do a walk through. Retirement for us at this moment is not a celebration 😥

Your home inspector probably didn't know what he was looking at. Maintenance can quickly get out of hand and not obvious to someone who doesn't know what to look for.

here is the european solution .Block haus as it is called in germany often use companies from finland that have access to polar kiefer or polar pine . these are very slow growing trees that are straight with tight growth rings . the trees are milled into dimensional lumber , kiln dried , glued up into the desired thickness and run through monster computer controlled shapers . the kits are precut to extremely high tolerances. there is very little if any shrinkage . wood fiber insulation is installed on the OUTSIDE of the house with vertical furring strips to fix the insulation and proved a surface to accept a profiled siding of the customers choice . the end result can be made to look like the preferred round look one finds in America .
Building paper is installed over the 'logs' first before the insulation , i think . anyway you get an air tight envelope that never has any leaks or maintenance on the logs . they are forever protected from insects , water and sun damage . the inside is left in the raw state to take advantage of the hyGroscopic effect of mass timber . this controls the humidity levels and makes for very slow temp swings .

Log homes suck. Way too much maintenance. They're beautiful, but I'll never own another one. Magnet for bugs, woodpeckers, and rodents.

There's plenty of non log homes with those problems too. As for maintenance, no different than a regular home. The difference for most log homes in that regard is stain. There's a simple solution though. Don't stain. Let the logs age naturally. If the home is designed properly with 4 foot overhang, the logs are protected from moisture and dont require stain for protection
